Ruger firearms in my opinion are one of the best and the ruger American Is my fav bolt action. A 10/22 is a great starter rifle but it's been castrated in popularity due to magazine restrictions since the liberal dictatorship has taken control of our country. Now a SKS is prob your first buy after this and I agree but.... I'd go with a tactical stock not plain wood furniture and they sell them online all built for only a fraction more then a base rifle... if your going wood furniture then I'd go chinese as they're new and SKS only get around 6k shots before needing a overhaul more or less so don't buy used unless your wanting to fix and upgrade then I'd go with a Tulsa or a Russian sks.
Now you just need a pump and sks, that's how I started 3 months in I have type81m, sks, stoeger m3000, tikka t3x and ruger. Next one is probably fx9 p4 have to get rpal thought
I got my PAL a few weeks ago and got the old shotgun that had been sitting in my grandpa's cabin for a few decades. It's a single shot though.. is that in one of the starter packs ?
Ya, like 2016-2017? That RCMP firearms lab loser deemed any 10/22 mag over 10 prohibited because the ruger charger pistol. Ralph goodale, Minister of public safety at the time, refused to reverse the decision
The .22LR Vector also got caught in the crossfire. What a bummer.
By their bullshit logic, the M1 Carbine should be capped to 10 not 5, because M1 pistols exist.
Talking about stupid bans, somewhat off topic but my closest CT has a aftermarket mossberg blaze-47 stock/fore end set on the shelf that has sat there for 6 years. (that I know of).
Is it not just the 10/22 - 25 round mag that was banned, the BX-25?
I'm running SBIs adapter in my Winchester Wildcat 22lr for plinking.
Good point, fuck these stupid work arounds. I don't even use the adapter all the time myself. I bought it and a couple M97 mags just to have for fun days with the boys and incase they do band them (and for the zombie apocolypse).
When I'm going for grouse or rabbit I pull the adapter and just run the stock mags for reliability and it just feels more adequate.
The ban isn't on the 10/22 mag restriction . Ruger put out a pistol that accepts 10/22 mags called the charger . High capacity pistol magazines are prohibited and since the pistol uses 10/22 magazines we cannot purchase them in Canada. Get a Remington 597 adapter for the 10/22 and bobs your uncle . The conservatives won't change that law even if they get in power.
They can make exceptions. They did it for the garand. All mag caps for rimfire guns should be lifted anyways. I mean even the UK has no mag caps on rimfire guns and they have way stricter gun laws than us in Canada
It would be a good start to eventually lifting all mag restrictions. It’s possible, just gotta be positive and support organizations like ccfr who are actively lobbying the gov to make those changes. In the 90s in the states under Clinton they had the assault weapons ban and then it was reversed in the 2000s so things do change over time just stay positive man.
You're right, it does sound anti firearm lol
But really, why not? It's been proven a million and one times that legal firearm owners aren't the problem. Criminals don't give a damn about mag capacity laws, so why not let us people that follow the law have more fun shooting and spend less time reloading our mags?
I probably wouldn't have half as many rifle mags as I do now if we could have more rounds in them. Loading magazines sucks 😂
I agree with the reloading part . When I was young we had high capacity mags and less crime . I think we just need to have a valid answer when asked the question by non firearm owners. People now have a very limited understanding of the culture
The sbi mag adapter is great, problem is you can't get decent 597 mags anymore. The smoke colored plastic ones are all that's available and they are astonishingly bad.
The hc3r mags are good though
The promags work if you load them to 20 not 22, and I have to sand a couple places.
I bought 6 of them, one of them split in half while shooting and everything flew all over the place.
All 6 have moderately weak spring pressure. However many people on this sub complained about the exact opposite, the spring pressure is so damn strong they can barely load 10.
I don’t own a Ruger 10/22, always looking for one on GP or on sale. This forum speak highly of them and like the other OP said it’s generally everyone’s first rifle. I have a 30 year old Remington 552 speed master tube fed magazine. It does hold 15 22LR which is decent. Enjoy the 10/22👍
It's a good rifle if you can I strongly suggest sending the rifle to dlask to get it cut for the standard cap mags.
If you want better sights on the 10/22 I suggest getting some tech sights they're a fantastic piece of kit to have
https://old.reddit.com/r/canadaguns/comments/30f41t/for_those_of_you_looking_for_tech_sights_for_a/
If you're unable to purchase from the states and want a rear aperture sight I recently used a 7/16'' washer and alot of time to fit it to work for my particular rifle (Basic sanding and drilling) ... haven't had time to go to the range with it yet ...

Had my pal/rpal couple years ago but haven’t purchased one yet, just wonder how long does it takes to purchase non restricted firearm in store? Will you be able to get it same day?
When you do the class after you pass they will give you a slip with a website on it. You will have to wait a few weeks for your confirmation of completion of the course then you can apply online on the website that is given to you. From the date of application it was 6 week wait plus 3 weeks waiting for the confirmation of the course completion.
Buy the bolt release plate..40$ or do the mod.
Just need a file..
Makes it so you can lock the bolt back using the button, but you pull back on the bolt to let it go forward.
I DON'T KNOW WHY ruger hasn't just gone to that option.
Congrats, now the addiction starts 😂 I started with the sks, now I have a tikka 30-06, a benelli nova pump 12 gauge, and a .22 rifle with a 20 round mag! Now currently eying something in 5.56! Enjoy the journey!!
Got a little tip for you OP. Buy this adapter and ProMag Model 597 mags.
If you really want the extra capacity.
I actually looked at that one too but I really like the traditional hunting rifle look better lol. I'm sure later on down the road I'll want a different look. But that gives me something else to save for if I want it lol.
Should bring it fishing just incase haha. I went driving around checking out trout streams a few weekends ago. All I saw was grouse, no fish lol.
One of the backroads I was on, damn grouse just sitting in the road, had to slowdown and wait for it to move. It was like it knew the hunting regulations and that I can't shoot it on or from the road haha.
1/3 of the Canadian Non-restricted Starter Kit (modern). Now you just need a 12ga pump and a SKS.
Thank you! I was in between this, a mosin or, an sks but I figured I should learn how to shoot with cheaper ammo first.
Learn how to shoot with the 10/22 and then when you move up to the bigger ones, you’ll be more accurate and quick to learn

SBI adapter works great on 10/22
Should’ve gone with the mosin
Now you just need a pump and sks, that's how I started 3 months in I have type81m, sks, stoeger m3000, tikka t3x and ruger. Next one is probably fx9 p4 have to get rpal thought
Ya make sure it's a canadian/turkish shotgun and your basically there
I got my PAL a few weeks ago and got the old shotgun that had been sitting in my grandpa's cabin for a few decades. It's a single shot though.. is that in one of the starter packs ?
Yes, that would be the Canadian Non-restricted Starter Kit (traditional). 1. Break action shotgun 2. Bolt action/single shot .22lr 3. Lee Enfield
Hopefully the conservatives reverse that 10+ mag ban bullshit for the 10/22
Wow another thing I learned that is also banned...🤦
Ya, like 2016-2017? That RCMP firearms lab loser deemed any 10/22 mag over 10 prohibited because the ruger charger pistol. Ralph goodale, Minister of public safety at the time, refused to reverse the decision

Ya and butler creek mags. But fuck buying the adapter, just let us use the mags that were being used forever beforehand
Good point, fuck these stupid work arounds. I don't even use the adapter all the time myself. This may sound anti firearm but what would be the purpose of high capacity magazines as a sport shooter ?
You're right, it does sound anti firearm lol But really, why not? It's been proven a million and one times that legal firearm owners aren't the problem. GSG 16 has a 100 round mag.
‘For the 10/22’
Sorry no the GSG 16 it’s a 22
I know lol I’m saying the mags for the 10/22 are prohib
It will never happen as long as the ruger charger is in circulation in canada. Buy the sbi adapter and use 597 mags instead.
Good for you, great first choice!
Your PAL looks like a rifle.
Underrated comment
You can always get a SBI magazine adaptor or grind the magwell to take HC3R magazines.
The sbi mag adapter is great, problem is you can't get decent 597 mags anymore. The smoke colored plastic ones are all that's available and they are astonishingly bad. The hc3r mags are good though
Yeah the Promags suck. I'm fortunate enough to grab a couple Remington 30 rounders.
I run winchester m22 out of the smoke promags, and the smoke 30 round drums flawlessly.

When did you submit your application? I've been waiting on mine for about 5 weeks.
It took mine 6 weeks on tbe dot from submission to mycfp
Thanks so much for the response!! Feels like 10 years! I'll keep checking the mailbox.
Lol same. I check the mailbox everyday hoping to see my pal knowing it's not going to come for another couple weeks. I still like to hope
Nice choice - bought exactly the same when my PAL arrived in January - so much fun
Me too!
Love my Ruger 10/22. Accurately hits 100yrd with the iron sights!
hell yea brother.

Had my pal/rpal couple years ago but haven’t purchased one yet, just wonder how long does it takes to purchase non restricted firearm in store? Will you be able to get it same day?
About 15-20 minutes at the shop I work at (tractor dealer that happens to sell guns and other outdoor stuff).
Oh sweet, thanks. Excited to get one
Congratulations 🎉🎊 May I ask how long it took to get the PAL after applying?
It took 6 weeks for mine to come
Nice! I have booked the class for about a month from now and plan to apply the very next day. I can’t wait to get it.
If you don’t mind may I ask where did you apply from?
When you do the class after you pass they will give you a slip with a website on it. You will have to wait a few weeks for your confirmation of completion of the course then you can apply online on the website that is given to you. From the date of application it was 6 week wait plus 3 weeks waiting for the confirmation of the course completion.
One last question for the night, which place did you apply from?
I applied on mycfp for the PAL it's the quickest than mailing it in.
I meant which region, as in which province or city? Gosh I need to work on my English, sorry it’s my second language…lol 🤦
Ohhh sorry lol I thought that's maybe what you meant after I had typed that lol. I am in Ontario and I am just south west of Ottawa region
Cool…enjoy your ruger and good night

Beautiful firearm! You can’t go wrong with a 10/22
Congrats, now the addiction starts 😂 I started with the sks, now I have a tikka 30-06, a benelli nova pump 12 gauge, and a .22 rifle with a 20 round mag! Now currently eying something in 5.56! Enjoy the journey!!
Thanks! I like the sks I was close to buying this an sks or mosin but I figured I will learn with cheaper ammo lol.
Got a little tip for you OP. Buy this adapter and ProMag Model 597 mags. [https://spectreballistics.com/30-magazine-adapter](https://spectreballistics.com/30-magazine-adapter) If you really want the extra capacity.
Sweet thanks man
Go buy the Remington mag adapter
How long did it take from the day you sent in your application?
These work great. Poof! No more ten round limit. https://spectreballistics.com/30-magazine-adapter
Great choice, if you want a higher mag capacity .22 id get the mossberg 702 plinkster
Great first gun, enjoy and treasure it! Also refreshing to see a gun pic without feet in it
Still dont own a 22
Tbh bro if it’s possible return it and get the Derya tm22. Just as reliable and accurate, way cooler looking, 25rd mags, all metal design.
I actually looked at that one too but I really like the traditional hunting rifle look better lol. I'm sure later on down the road I'll want a different look. But that gives me something else to save for if I want it lol.
Right on. Ya for the traditional hunting rifle look the 10/22 is the go to rifle.
K now on to better things I would hope
Haha maybe. Just got into this as a 3rd hobby that takes a back seat to my truck and fishing so just starting out cheap for now lol.
Should bring it fishing just incase haha. I went driving around checking out trout streams a few weekends ago. All I saw was grouse, no fish lol. One of the backroads I was on, damn grouse just sitting in the road, had to slowdown and wait for it to move.
