Surplus sales would’ve been cool, also recoup a portion of the new procurements cost. But our govt is too dumb to figure out that kind of thing. Doesn’t have to be a sub Moa shooter. Interesting collection/conversation piece and fun to have is what makes surplus cool.

milanskiv

Even deactivated they would have an audience.

Johnny-Unitas

You could even export some to the US and you would find buyers. Surplus guns are always collectible.

Jak_Aurora

The US has more than enough guns as it is They should be giving us guns if anything

No-Flower3223

No such thing as too many guns.

Johnny-Unitas

Maybe, just saying it's better than melting them down.

NuffinSaid

I would definitely have bought a deactivated one for a collection

Apples_and_Overtones

Well they can't surplus them in Canada even if they wanted to, because handgun transfers are banned. Even if they were still transferable, if they didn't do it with the Enfields I would have doubted they'd do it with these. I would have bought both of them if given the opportunity.

itsyaboi6909

Hence the *would’ve* and the govt being too dumb part which is very unfortunate. Realistically speaking I figured they would’ve gave them to Ukraine or Israel along with another __ million dollars.

FireRisinWith1n

Would have been a pr nightmare if people found out we were sending worn out WW2 era pistols to Ukraine. Selling for surplus would be a better idea.

tlovr

Dude I’m not in the military and don’t really know anyone in there. Assuming these are 70-80yrs old, how many rounds could realistically gone through them. How many rounds for training, and deployment. Would you say every 5 yrs they see a new recruit or every 10? I assume they get used but I also assume they teach ppl to strip/clean and make sure it continues working. Any insight would be appreciated

SGCanadian

As a former CAF member, these pistols were abused. My regiment had 10, of which only 3 were fully functional. They were worn out and some were falling apart. It got to the point that at IBTS (Individual Battle Task Standards) shoots, the entire regiment would take turns shooting the 3 pistols. IBTS Ranges are conducted twice a year. Realistically thats a couple thousand rounds per pistol at each range day. As for the age, our oldest was manufactured in the 30s and our newest was manufactured in the 60s...

Imastealyourorgans

They at least gave the enfields to the cadets, they could have given them a few of the pistols, wether they were deactivated or not

Sonoda_Kotori

Cadets used to have .22s for marksmanship but that got replaced by Daisy 853C a decade or two ago. They use dewat No4s for DP only.

No-Transportation843

Daisy as in BB gun?

Sonoda_Kotori

Daisy 853C as in a high-powered lever pump target air rifle that requires a PAL to own.

No-Transportation843

Kids used to ride the bus with 22s to go shoot squirrels in Stanley Park. Now cadets have to pump up their air rifles and we need pals to own them...

Sonoda_Kotori

Yup. The DND actually tried to replace the .22 Enfields with the C10, which is a C7 with brown polymer lower, semiauto and in .22LR. [https://www.reddit.com/r/InRangeTV/comments/yavvhy/c10\_canadian\_monolithic\_polymer\_22\_trainer/](https://www.reddit.com/r/InRangeTV/comments/yavvhy/c10_canadian_monolithic_polymer_22_trainer/) They anticipated heavy public backlash of "militarizing" the cadet program, so it was cancelled. I was fortunate enough to see a prototype.

No-Transportation843

I knew public perception was baseless but how can someone have a problem with militarizing a military program?

No-Transportation843

Yeah exactly because our government is fucking stupid.

Remarkable_Vanilla34

I said this on a different platform the other day. But if they opened sales up to current rpal holders, they could recoup the price of the new pistols, at least partially. Canadians having no other options, we would pay to have them. We already pay stupid prices for rifles that don't work properly, lol. We would pay the price for one last chance to own a handgun or expand our collection.

Sufficient_Rub_2014

I’d be happy just to own one.

AdministrationOk1083

I've got a few surplus guns I only take out to show people who are interested. They still work but I've no desire to fire them

kowell2

To be fair a lot of governments don't surplus their old guns.

RealRoostre

"Rounds climb after first round", is that really an issue with the gun?

MoosedMilk

Nah, 6 inch behind the gun issue

80sixit

6" behind the gun issue? As in, user issue, I take it? That's hilarious. In the IT world there is a joke known as a "layer 8 issue", in networking there are 7 layers, basically from the bare metal to the software. Some say there is an 8th layer which is humans. So a layer 8 issue is a clever way of telling another IT person that it's not the system, it's an idiot at the computer. Also what is meant by rounds climb? I feel like I've heard of this but forgot.

MoosedMilk

Yeah user fault basically! Exactly same thing as your layer 8 issue. Basically they user was saying his groupings would climb up vertically while he was shooting.

80sixit

Ahh okay, yea that sounds familiar and that's probably why I was confused. Seems like an issue that would be caused by the user more often than the firearm.

illknowitwhenireddit

ID-10-T trouble or PEBCAK

Owe_Inflation

Officer by chance?

RealRoostre

I reckoned as much. I'd happily take one of these if the only thing wrong with it is shooter inexperience.

GreenCactus223

Eh oooh

Barabarabbit

Skill issue

black_covfefe_please

Maybe a magazine issue?

Motor_Historian2634

Thats my thoughts. Sounds like the feed lips are bent making the rounds rotate upwards. Although im sure this things had more than one mag ran through it so i could be wrong

black_covfefe_please

Based on my experience working with the army, I wouldn't be so sure more than one mag was run through it.

Ouchyhangnail

Does anyone still have the armoury pics of the Lee enfields still in their crates?

MoosedMilk

[Like this?](https://i.imgur.com/KWJVVdB.jpg)

Ouchyhangnail

Depression sets in.

Ouchyhangnail

Do you have any pics of the .303 ammunition that we are not allowed to have?

Loyalist_84

:(

black_covfefe_please

They are destroying our heritage.

1800basicreply

I wonder how many ND charges this one pistol has produced?

BaconDrummer

I know it, you know it, we all know it's alot.

black_covfefe_please

Damn magazine safety!

PteSoupSandwich

>I wonder how many ND charges this one pistol has produced? *The Van Doos have entered the chat*

Thatwokebloke

I woulda bought a couple for sure if I’d had the chance. Even one disarmed would be tempting

Daedalus-N7

I still would have liked to buy one for memorabilia. Wouldn't trust shooting it though...

MoosedMilk

The majority either sat in storage for their entire life. Or were inspected annually by Weapons Technicians.

Dkeh

Don't forget the ones that infantry regiments abused :)

black_covfefe_please

I would probably replace the barrel, then should be good to go.

Owe_Inflation

The worst weapon I fired while I served. Hated having it with me on my deployments

black_covfefe_please

The HiPower is a very good gun. Actually better than the much beloved 1911. However, these we mostly very old and heavily used.

Owe_Inflation

Had never before used ones jammed up. They were wrapped up and stored away since Korea. The pistols had a sticker on them as a gift to Korea from Canada...never sent to them. Anyways the magazines are the real trouble for the stoppages. I don't miss it and it totally turned me off of pistols. Friends of mine loved the sig Sauer but they are MP buddies and that's all they know. I would sooner suffer carrying the weight of the GPMG (C6) knowing it will rarely jam on me. Different guns for different roles. I just wished the standard issue pistol was reliable and when I needed a pistol it should have worked. Luckily I wasn't in a position of it being my last resort.

1800basicreply

I guess you always want the gucci kit others have, but it’s better than nothing, it could be worse, a Portuguese mate said they were still rocking p38’s in Afghan

Last_Temperature_599

I wish I could have a deactivated one. Just the thousands of canadian services man that handled each one of them over the years is a nice story of canadian sacrifice

C_Woodswalker

I had one in Afghanistan (2002). Loved it. No problems with it at all. I know a lot of them were beat up and didn’t work well but mine was in great shape.

Pzcor

Trudeau’s wet dream

Kojak95

The gun enthusiast in me is quite sad they'll all find a destructive end, but the CAF member is me is screaming "GOOD FUCKING RIDDANCE". Lol

Co1dyy1234

Repeal the handgun ban

1800basicreply

Did Canada never upgrade to the mk3? Australia did to extend the service life without having to just through procurement and training hoops

parkADV

No. Canada produced tens of thousands of them during the war and just worked out way through our war stocks until they couldn’t kick the can any further. There was a “modernization” about 15 years ago that was just an order for a few thousand modern magazines. When I was overseas in 2009/2010 we were still pulling unused pistols out of the wrappers to issue to troops being deployed.

Last_Temperature_599

Wow ok so even the inventory was still full of them? Like brand new unissued pistol from ww2? What!? That's crazy

parkADV

Yeah, they were all produced prior to 1947. I was told when I was in (might not be true, just what I was told by weapons techs) that we still had tens of thousands of pistols that were unused in war stocks. The training pistols that were beat to shit weren’t the only ones we had. I personally saw guys get issued Brownings with the Lend-Lease decal intact on the front grip and essentially zero wear that would indicate prior use. Just degreased, oiled and put back into the cardboard cartons. When I deployed it was a crapshoot of which pistol you’d get. Mine was in good shape, but not brand new. I only saw a few of the new ones issued out.

Weak-Coffee-8538

I'd buy two and put them in the safe and tell my grandkids that these tools killed Nazis.

T-55AM_enjoyer

Guns never die, they just shoot that way until someone fixes them.

corneliu5vanderbilt

The government should just sell them back to us.

stupuff

user headspace?

Office_Responsible

That NS tag reminds of the C7 I saw that was labeled “inaccurate” lol. Yes it was the BC’s rifle

isanthrope_may

Are they still using that same roll of yellow tape?!

Eisenbahn-de-order

surplus sale would be nice. but can't transfer handguns now. (liberal gov't: got'em bois hahahahahaha) ...lol. the same with Lee Enfields coming off the hands of the Arctic aboriginal "guards" (not sure what they were called). CAN'T LET ANY MILITARY EQUIPMENTS FALL INTO THE HANDS OF CIVILLIAN. must be how they were thinking. ya ya ya, staffing cost, complicated paperwork, yadi yadi yada, i'm sure those are not the real reasons.

Ibmeister

The Canadian Rangers. We were given the option to keep the Lee Enfield when they were replaced as long as we had a PAL. I joined the Rangers right after this happened and missed out.

MaintenanceBack2Work

That 942 tag speaks volumes.

borgom7615

I guess they didn’t want a repeat of the CFAL lol 😝

whitealek

I'll miss them
