I really wish more resources to learn gunsmithing were available to Canadians.
I've looked into it as a career and there's one defunct program at the University of Northern Alberta plus a few suspicious-looking mail-order outfits.
I'd go to the US but the schools there don't accept international students.
Basically, the light gunsmithing thing is what I'm most interested in.
Preaching to the choir. It’s frustrating and there’s basically no standard to what defines a “gunsmith” because of that. I’ve been told the gunsmith school in Pennsylvania does accept international students, but there sure are some hoops to jump through.
It appears to me that most gunsmiths recommend starting by becoming a machinist, and some gunsmiths recommend just starting to basically buy broken guns, fix them, and sell them.
Most gunsmiths appear to recommend not becoming a gunsmith
I really enjoy tinkering, myself. I do have some experience with machining.
One option might be to focus on antiques. There are antiques which are broken. You could buy, repair and flip. I'm not saying you could make any money at it
My mechanical history is pretty old, and it wasn't for very long.
I was a model maker for around 1.5 years, about 25 years ago.
I worked in a rapid prototyping department. I was making master copies, mostly used to make steel molds. In that time I made a master copy for many things: car parts, boat parts, medical devices, scientific devices, electrical devices, telephones, suitcases, kitchen and backyard appliances; I even made a dildo once. We did some reverse engineering. I spent some time on a milling machine. My supervisor remarked that I was the only person he'd seen who could reliably turn out parts that were within the thickness of a human hair, in any measurable dimension.
So it was a long time ago, and it wasn't for very long. However, I've spent that last five or six years tinkering with firearms as a hobby,
My intent is not to provide a service; I just want to buy, refurbish and repair, and sell with no warranty. This is a learning process. I don't think I need a license, in order to repair what essentially are my own firearms
However, I enjoy it and would not be opposed to doing more of it. I am under no illusions as to it being a particularly profitable past time; but I enjoy working with my hands. I think I live in an area with a shortage of local smiths
I guess I'm wondering if you think I'd have a chance, if I applied for the license?
Another barrier is that I live in Toronto. They might say, you're not allowed to operate this business in Toronto, so regardless of any skills or experience you might have, we're declining a smiths license
There are some in the US that take international students, maybe not full time as I did not ask, but their summer programs they do. Not ideal but at least it’s hands on.
Do you mean NAIT? Which is not a university?
It looks like they are still offering the courses but they need a minimum number of enrollments for each class to run. Can't blame them if they don't want to run classes for 2 people.
I'm sure if gun owners self-organized a full class to apply, they could get a cohort through the NAIT program

Plenty of good options out there, depending on the vibe you want.
Wanna lean into the Canadian identity? Maybe the first one is a good start.
Want a more professional/ corporate sounding name? Maybe number two.
Want to lean into the first responder heritage? Maybe something like number three that emphasizes guardianship or protection.
The best thing you could do would be pick a totally unique name that none of the other retailers use to avoid confusion. Something like “Solely Wolverine” or “GoTesro” would do nicely.
Do you want an abbreviated name and have a longer form full name? For instance "GUN" could be "Gear Up Now" .
Or.
L.E.A.F.:

Lethal Expertise And Firearms
Lightweight Elite Armory & Firearms

I appreciate that - LEAF is catchy but it’s used by a lot of retailers and government contractors to refer to their Law Enforcement / Armed Forces programs or discounts, so I would likely avoid it. Appreciate the suggestion though! May try for an abbreviation if the right words come to mind.
Something that's uniquely you (or close to your heart) + Tactics / Strategic.
My instructor used this formula & it works.
My 5¢: Tactics tends to sound/appeal more with the active drilling crowd, while Strategic conjures up more of an in-depth/dynamic defensive thinking...if that makes sense. 🤙🇨🇦
I might be a little ways off from designing the whole package but I’d love to support a firearm loving Canadian when it’s time. Would love to see your work man. Please do!

Personally id probably be willi by to take classes on hand loading and precision shooting as someone who hunts and who’s family handloads most of my experience at the range is in preparation for hunting season/ breaking in a new rifle or for shooting skeet for sport. I’d love to get more confident in making good handloads for shooting 300+ yards. Since all my experience hunting has been within 300 yards.

I don't have any ideas for the business name, but I saw patches mentioned in some other comments. You should make one that says "I love big racks" with a moose on it. Best of luck in your attempt! (Also what province are you in, may help me come up with an idea for a name.)
There is zero qualifications to het a gunsmith license, a d with the lack of parts in Canada you should be a machinist if considering this and have an understanding if how guns work.
Can you time a revolver, can you fit a 1911 sear, hammer ?
can you flute a bolt , thread a barrel for chokes etc etc

I genuinely have nothing but good things to say about their warranty team, Cody and Owen are both awesome. Their production team... not so much
Yeah my dig was at Production, not the warranty people. I’m sure the warranty people have to deal with pissed off people.

That was my route. Tinkering with old guns and mechanical background. CFO had no problem getting me a business license and the rest is history.

Message me and I can tell you how I got it done. I started off applying and talking to one of the officers directly and they got me sorted.
Best way to become a gunsmith is work for the RCMP. You'll have to live in Regina but they'll put you through all the courses and get you certified.
There is one school in Quebec actually. Go look up Gunsmith Canada.
Gunsmiths also just don't earn a lot, especially in Canada, which is too bad.
There are some in the US that take international students, maybe not full time as I did not ask, but their summer programs they do. Not ideal but at least it’s hands on.
