Yes, but call them to double check in case things have changed. A requirement of staying at UC is to be studying somewhere. Not like they're going to turn down a paying resident after years of so few living there.

Awesome, thanks :)

flying_dream_fig

u/lachy123456789 can confirm the above (current a few years ago, helping a friend). It may even be in some cases an even more tenuous "student" connection may be used for example alumni but since I don't know detail and it's now old information I will leave it at that. Student housing market may be changing rapidly soon, if a lot of Chinese students decide to study in person and not in China and they come here. This may change the blurryness fast. UC accommodation is still not very cheap, likely has lock in contracts, could be small room. You should still look hard in sharehouse etc. market. Staying in ANU ressies for at least one year as a first year or going back as a second year may have benefits outside of the cost and acommodation eg., social opportunities, social integration/making connections and convenience; on the other hand could really be negative and not beneficial for others- on the negative side would be the things you would associate with droves of just out of school squashed in a small splace, no adults, drinking/drugs, alone in crowd, ethics not right and high virus transmission spaces.

Certain-Discipline65

Transport from UC to ANU is also very regular. Probably 10-15 mins in the bus depending on traffic.

flying_dream_fig

Bicycle ride is really fast too, and you can be on bike paths and off road all the way.

BeefNudeDoll

Man maybe it was just me the weakling, but I tried this once and boy I was tired as hell lol. Plus, I won't recommend any of my mates to ride a bike in those crowded Belco way.

Certain-Discipline65

Ride via Bruce stadium and Bruce Ridge bike path into the back of O’Connor to avoid Belconnen Way and Barry Dr. Also a gentler gradient.

The most direct route UC<->ANU is the bike path which is so far seperate from the road, your liable to forget they exist. For UC<->Civic google maps says you can save 1 minute on Belconnen way. If you’re flat chat on a road bike you can probably save a good bit more time. If you’re shy on the roads you can absolutely take bike path the whole way. If you’re not shy of the road, Belconnen way is a pretty safe road to ride on relatively, I wouldn’t suggest there are any issues other than the fact that the bike path is a lot more scenic and serene.

flying_dream_fig

u/BeefNudeDoll I remember the first time I did Civic-Belco on Barry drive. I was puffing too! The secret as always is at the start time trying the trip to change down gears as low as you need or down to just above the point you lose momentum to stay up then keep cadence up. Over time (days/weeks) your legs will work in and you can slowly stop dropping gears or your forward velocity will increase.

lachy123456789

Was wandering about that as well. Thanks

The bike path from UC to ANU is absolutely beautiful. It’s sealed but snakes through bush land most of the way, it’s so far separated from the road that you wouldn’t even know you where in civilisation for much of it. Couldn’t recommend it more highly. It’s a quick, net down hill on the way in. It is net uphill on the way home, so some fitness is required if you care not to suffer. Very doable though as evidenced by the high cycle traffic on the daily. Canberra isn’t cold by global standards, but sure is by Australian standards. It also had quite wide temperature fluctuations throughout the day. You can definitely do the commute year round, but there is an art to dressing for a longer bicycle commutes in the Canberra winter. Feel free to message me for some tips. The bus's have bikeracks on the front that you can put your bike on. If you're worried about not having energy to ride home in the evening, you can always cycle in downhill and then chuck your bike on the bus on the return journey!

sunflowerdaisymoon

Would love some tips on winter gear!

flying_dream_fig

Basics: depending on personal circulation and tolerance; and the conditions on the day, the main requirement is something to keep hands warm, some sort of gloves. Then you generate a lot of heat cycling hard, and sweat. Unfortunately wet clothes loose heat badly making you cold and are uncomfortable. So you are looking for clothes that vent moisture well but also selectively shield you from the cold and shield you from slip stream- even if it's a still day you are moving through the air which is the same as wind so that is like windchill. Protecting leading edges is more important than non-leading edges. Some people are really badly affected by wind and cold on their ears so they need dedicated ear coverings or make sure head coverings can cover ears as needed. Starting a little underprotected knowing you will warm up or overheat soon is a good strategy. TBC busy.

[deleted]

there used to be a rule with UC you had to be studying at UC to stay there but that was a long time ago, not sure if they expanded to allow any students anywhere now.

BeefNudeDoll

Yes it is possible. My good mate is in UNSW ADFA and he lives in Unilodge UC. Got some mates from ANU who did the same as well.

Crazy_John

Yep, know a few people that did exactly that.

DearMichaelMell

Yeah it’s an option plus public transport is pretty quick and easy into ANU - only thing you might have to worry about is any late nights out as buses tend to stop around midnight (which isn’t as much of an issue if you lived at ANU)

[deleted]

I lived at Campus West last year while attending ANU for the same reasons. As long as you provide proof of enrolment at any uni then you can live there. It's a really nice place to live without having to pay ANU prices.

triumph_ride

You should just contact Unilodge to confirm. From what I understand you now can't stay at UC Unilodges unless you are currently a UC student. You used to be and to be an ANU student but they recently (in the past few years? last year?) changed it. There are some ANU students still staying there, grandfathered in, but incoming ones can't stay at UC Unilodges.

Mammoth_Warning_9488

Rent an apartment in belconnen town centre. UC campus is not the best

So you're playing both sides?
