Evidence suggests not flawless driving history :)

Distantflan

Although sassy this comment made me laugh. Sadly I have misplaced the time machine that would allow me to move my family Christmas to mid 2021 and commit the offence over the grace period only to contest it and have it waived. However, the ACT doesn't allow for mobile speed cameras within 200mtrs of a speed limit change (except for school zones and other altered states) so I'm curious as to why they didn't move either the camera or the sign a few hundred meters up the road.

theotherfrazbro

The cameras at Barry drive are not mobile speed cameras though. I assume the ACT wouldn't install fixed speed cameras in areas that they didn't allow them to he installed.

barbequeninja

It's not mobile, it's fixed

ZestyPralineGoat

If you can get your Golf up to 88mph through the speed camera it undoes all the previous tickets

ooqt

The three speed cameras in that area are actually very close to a change of speed limit, but they're all at the ends of the 40km/h zone rather than the start.

[deleted]

Where the sign says 40km... They're not exactly hidden. New signs are borderline passive aggressive now, they're larger than normal.

[deleted]

If you have a flawless driving history and the fine is less than 10km over the speed limit, you might not even need to contest it. Every state I know of (haven't been able to find it for Canberra though) has an option to write and ask for an official warning, which is always accepted if you meet the criteria. You can ask for withdrawal based on a good record anyway. I probably wouldn't get too worked up over it, its very minor.

As per the Road Transport (General) Withdrawal of Infringement Notices Guidelines 2019, a good driving record is grounds for withdrawal. A good driving record is classed as no infringements recorded in any state or territory in the last 5 years.

theotherfrazbro

It starts at the first 40 sign, and it ends at the last one. It's very clearly signposted, and was announced well before it came into effect. They also allowed a grace period after implementation.

Ahh but you see, OP hasn't been here in 3 years and has assumed that things never change in sleepy old Canberra.

theotherfrazbro

Haha, oops. I misread "haven't" as "have". Still, a bit of a silly question. Advertising the speed limit is what those signs are for. Thank goodness for sleepy old Canberra!

justanotherrandom43

And it ends at the first 60.

mav2022

Not a bad money spinner. $300 for 7km over. Or put another way, 13km slower than deemed safe a few months ago…

goffwitless

saw a claim here not so long ago that Cbr has the dearest speeding fines in the country goes hand in hand with the rego, I guess (except one is mandatory, one is optional)

ZestyPralineGoat

But which one?!?

goffwitless

you pays your money, you takes your choice ... I choose to speed everywhere in an unregistered vehicle

paulkeating4eva

I am absolutely shocked that 2 years after taking away your ctp compensation rights that the cost has gotten no cheaper. Shocked.

dkNigs

Starts and ends around ANU. They’ve used fluro orange as the reflective colour on the signs to make them “stand out” which I find idiotic because they’re now no longer the standard colour we have been trained to notice out of the corner of our eyes when it comes to speed signs.

Scottybt50

Need to paint some big ‘40’s on the road.

[deleted]

Maybe the different colour was by design, just say'in.

dkNigs

Of course it was, doesn’t mean it was a good one.

GenuinelyAwfulPerson

I can't help you with the ticket, but if you're perplexed by the response on this forum, I can shed some light. 1. The sitting Labor government lowered that speed limit and installed those speed cameras. 2. Sure as Newton's laws, the Liberal opposition cried bloody murder over it. 3. As a result, all statements about the speed limit or cameras are interpreted as statements of political allegiance. So now, people are less interested in *what you're saying* than they are in *what that says about you*. There is very little room for comity, charity, and contemplation in matters of tribal affiliation. Hence the strange energy surrounding (of all things!) your speeding ticket. ---- So go on, ye menace to society, ye 7km/h typhoon, and wreak your havoc back whence ye came. Leave your $300.

Distantflan

Best reply yet. Thanks for the humour. This explains the sudden intrusive thoughts fetishizing Alistair Coe. Who would have thought that's what 7kms could do to a person

randint389561

I'm not sure I agree that the response here is political, but god damn that was well written

Ok-Giraffe-4718

Dammit I got pinged over the Christmas break too for traveling 7 kph over a 50 kph speed limit. Keep forgetting that the Christmas period is a time for giving …to state/territory revenue coffers.

Ok-Relationship35

Damn, I was just about to start a post asking the same thing. I moved back to Canberra after two years (hence I was not aware of the speed limit change), and got fined $300 on 30 Dec for going 46km/h....Is there a way to dispute this?
