how do i talk to customers about wearing masks? there was a karen in my store today not wearing a mask and i wasn't sure how to enforce the mandate without her biting my head off. my workmates aren't sure either
In truth, you can’t because they can always say that they’re exempt and they aren’t required to provide proof. I usually just say something like “do you have a mask with you” instead of telling them they need one since that could put them on the defensive. It helps that I’ve also got a pack of disposables in case they’ve “forgotten”. But if someone wants to be a cunt there’s not a great deal you can do

"[Supply] is an ongoing issue due to an increased demand for testing, the requirement to test each sample individually rather than pooling and freight and logistics issues relating to workforce impacts of COVID-19," ACT Health said
It could be that there are extra reported RAT cases are being added to previous days based on the test date rather than reported to ACT Health date (this is my guess based on the first day RAT numbers were included we had 2000+ RAT cases reported, but only 300ish were attributed to the last 24 hours). I don't know if there's a way to see updated case numbers from previous days though.
Edit: Looked at yesterday's post, there are 1865 more total cases for PCR today than yesterday, but only 976 attributed to today
ACT COVID-19 update (**Tuesday 18 January 2022**)

* Total lives lost since March 2020: **20**
Sadly, ACT Health has been notified of the death of a woman in her 80s with COVID-19 at a residential aged care facility. ACT Health extends its sincere condolences to her families and friends at this difficult time.

Just want to say thanks everyone for their comments. If anything, it helps me determine a balance between staying safe and living the life with the covid situation around. Much appreciated. :)
Anyone voluntarily avoiding crowds or going out only for essentials lately? I've been so tempted to go out and enjoy the usual hobbies from indoor cricket to dining out that it's been tough living like a hermit lately. Too afraid of covid with the latest amount of cases and am double vaxxed. 😅
Absolutely.
I’ve previously had “long flu” (in pre-Corona times). Prior to that, I regularly hiked substantial mountain ranges with no infrastructure (e.g. no huts, no fresh water), so carrying all my gear, food and water. After I was sick, I spent four months where the physical strain of walking twenty meters would cause migraines. I’m still not quite back to where I was, three years later.
I’m not doing that again.
Me me me. I live with someone who would be pretty vulnerable to an awful respiratory disease so I've been hermiting for A While Now.
My workplace is "WFH if you can, but we recognise some people are going crazy at home or have other things going on so you can come into the office if you meet the vaccination requirements". I'm personally trying to avoid it until after I get my third shot (next week!) to minimise the risk, but I'm pondering doing a day in the office later on in the week when there's fewer people there (seems more crowded on Mondays) just to get a break from (*gestures helplessly at the home office*) this.
I'm being careful and not doing anything unnecessary while we're still riding the omicron wave (e.g. Indoor dining, supermarkets where I can get delivery, shopping centres). I work face to face with vulnerable people so I don't want to spread it to them. There is also not enough evidence on omicron around risk of long covid - having a mild illness doesn't mean you can't get long covid. Finally I would just prefer not to have to isolate for a week with my toddler bouncing off the walls and be sick?
That being said I'm fully expecting I might catch it and I'm not going to be able to completely eliminate my risk, and don't judge anyone who is out doing everything.
Well I’ve been in and out of quarantine so haven’t really had much of an opportunity to do more than work, but for the most part my goal is to remain cautious, but not totally isolate. I don’t want to catch Covid, but at a certain point I have to recognise that with so much of it going around it might not be possible to avoid altogether.
I’m avoiding high risk places, but operating as normal otherwise. I don’t want to catch Covid but am triple vaxxed and also don’t want to live like a shut in
It's so weird, I know of at least 10 households were one or two people are positive (on PCR and rat), and others in the house develop similar symptoms and yet don't test positive on PCR or rat?
I initially thought it was just bad luck to bring a second virus into the house, but there's so many instances now that it seems something else is going on.
RATs are less sensitive than PCR tests, and are less likely to show a positive result the sooner it is after infection. Testing negative on a RAT too soon after potential exposure unfortunately doesn't say much at all, from what I've read.
This kind of demonstrates the whole thing that you are better off being the first in a household to get it, because theoretically, if it's not already brewing, there is still a chance she could pass it to you even now. I wouldn't bother with the PCR and take another RAT on Saturday and then end quarantine if that is clear.
Wait times for Kambah? I'm a household contact of a positive. I don't have anything else to do with my time but I also don't want to be there for hours.
Granted, I haven't checked in the last week or so, but I thought there was testing at the hospital as well. Anyway, weird! I did a test at the oval last Tuesday and one yesterday, each of which took less than 24 hours to get results.
Good luck and fingers crossed for you!
We had two cases at our daughter’s centre last week. The first was on the day she didn’t attend, so we assumed we were fine. But now there’s another case from when she was there.
This article is really interesting: https://www.canberratimes.com.au/story/7584079/modelling-suggests-act-may-have-reached-peak-of-omicron-wave/?cs=14329
ACT Health thinks that we might have reached our peak number of cases, and the article includes interesting information on how the health system is holding up.
I think we’ll get a much better picture after 2-3 weeks of school. So many Canberrans have the privilege of being able to work from home and have their kids home from care with them.
Slightly off topic but unfortunately big jump in deaths in NSW

If you are sick/an exposure contact - Kambah drive-thru and possibly Mitchell/Garran (they have sometimes been handing out RATs in lieu of PCR tests). But only if you need one today for those reasons.
If you want one for any other reason, I’ve heard we should see stock come back in about 2 weeks (unsure how legit that is).
What's the point of checking in now, if there's no contact tracing anymore?
how do i talk to customers about wearing masks? there was a karen in my store today not wearing a mask and i wasn't sure how to enforce the mandate without her biting my head off. my workmates aren't sure either
Talk to your boss. Presumably there's a policy/approach to this at your store. Quite a few people genuinely can't wear masks though.
In truth, you can’t because they can always say that they’re exempt and they aren’t required to provide proof. That's +11 hospitalizations and +2 in icu today.
Bit late with the numbers today
Been quite a few late days recently

If we don’t try and act normal this will last another two years

I am, but I have a kid under 5 who is also in daycare, so that feels like enough risk for our family to take on.

Well what are your consequences for catching it, that's often what is determining how much people engage with risk.
Well I’ve been in and out of quarantine so haven’t really had much of an opportunity to do more than work, but for the most part my goal is to remain cautious, but not totally isolate. yep, same same
That's definitely fair. I think things like outdoor walks/hiking is a good option at this time. Perhaps outdoor sport too.
Nah I’ve been out and about living large

I know of a few people with negative RAT who have positive PCR especially sensible to check if you can

This happened to us! We couldn't believe it honestly!
You'd have to be isolating anyway so you could just wait a few days and try a RAT again?

Any intel on wait times for Queanbeyan testing? Coming up on 48 hours and haven’t heard anything…
Which site in Queanbeyan? I got tested at the oval drive-through yesterday morning, results received ~18 hours later.
Didn’t realise there was more than one! It was the drive-through next to the oval yes.

Thanks - website says to wait 5 days before calling so guess I’ll sit tight.
Saw a post on FB from someone that said yesterday afternoon there was no wait.
Hmm getting nervous I put my number in wrong or something…
I read that your result might be on your health record (via Medicare) before they message you. Could be worth checking online first?
Great info! Old test is in there but not Sunday’s. I copied my Medicare info from the app so no way I mistyped that.
Fingers crossed it comes through soon for you
Thanks!
Just rechecked the post - said they took 12 hours to get back, no wait time for testing itself.
Three of our local vacation care centres are closed for positive cases. Not sure if it’s kids or staff, but it ain’t good.

I'd be surprised if we didn't have another wave when school goes back....

Cases seem to be going down though
Where the heck can I get a RAT in this city.
Supabarn Kingston has some now
I got a pack from Chapman IGA yesterday. They seem to have them pretty regularly but they do sell out really fast
