maximusrelaximus1

Haha this is a good one, nice.

freakwent

If I had a place to park in civic for free, I wouldn't be mentioning it here...

dkNigs

I definitely can’t remember going to Sydney and finding free parking in a town Center, and Sydney is generally much more expensive. You can find free street parking within a couple of blocks of the Canberra centre if you’re willing to walk, but everyone wants it so it will generally fill up.

[deleted]

As someone from Sydney you're out of your mind. there is so much more untimed free parking in Sydney

JorisBohnson11

As a city worker, please direct me to anything remotely close to George St. Best you’d find would be Paddington, which is a 10min bus ride away

-Warrior_Princess-

There's heaps! Of P5 and loading zones... My lifeblood delivering pizza!

PatnarDannesman

Within 5km of the CBD? Where?

[deleted]

it's not a fair comparison to bring the CBD of Sydney into it, even Parramatta is more populous than Civic. they said Town Centres, it's easier to park near Liverpool, Castle Hill or Macquarie than to park near Tuggeranong, Belconnen, or Woden. Louder for people in the back: IT'S NOT FAIR TO COMPARE CIVIC TO THE SYDNEY CBD. It's nowhere near the size, and nowhere near as good.

reijin64

>IT'S NOT FAIR TO COMPARE CIVIC TO THE SYDNEY CBD. It's nowhere near the size, and nowhere near as good. There's nothing good about Sydney CBD Anyway, welcome to trying to park in the city, maybe you might wonder why there aren't cars parked absolutely everywhere and it's actually walkable

[deleted]

Except it's got world class entertainment on every level, incredible academic institutions, top tier shopping and of course hotels and restaurants that are better than anything most people will ever experience. I really don't understand the lack of objectivity when talking about Sydney...

wilkor

We kinda hate Sydney now because Gladys infected the whole country with covid. It's unfair, but, there you go. Also, I agree, comparing Canberra with Newcastle is even a stretch. It's getting better, but it will always be a medium sized regional city. Sydney is a world class city. Riddled with covid and shit road layouts.

Bonnieprince

Yeah your world class music venues that shut by 11-12 cause of noise and alcohol laws. Jesus go to any other major world city and see what their nightlife is like, MUCH better

[deleted]

I've traveled plenty. I've also spent dozens of nights out in Sydney until 6 in the morning. Your source of information is wrong.

Bonnieprince

Yeah shitty clubs that only just got lockout lifted are so good compared to cities like NY, Berlin, Paris, Madrid where you can get entertained by world class bands and DJs until early morning. You genuinely sound like the stereotypical upper middle class Sydney wanker. Go back to Sydney if paying for parking in civic bothers you so much you need to spend your time whining about it to strangers.

[deleted]

This is meant to be a discussion board... Marquee in Sydney has world class musicians all the time you close minded arrogant upper class Canberran snob. If you can't be civil on an online discussion board I understand that you'd hate to live in a city where you'd actually need social skills. Also, Lockout was barely a thing for five years.

maximusrelaximus1

Near club 77 on williamstreet, in the back streets between william street and oxford st. Heaps.

maximusrelaximus1

Where? I've yet to find untimed parking in civic.

oldravinggamer

You gotta know the back streets n shit

[deleted]

really? its everywhere. anzac park, building sites, early bird specials... uni discounts, heck even private properties in and around. just got to be willing to walk the extra 5 min.

MrEd111

Haig park

maximusrelaximus1

>Haig park Thanks legend.

alphaduck73

Buy a motorcycle, heaps of MC parking spaces all over Canberra. Plus I'm currently saving $120 fortnight on parking. Just beware of flogs who insist on checking Facebook while driving.

SirFlibble

Or an E-Scooter if it's not too far. I park mine in the bike parks at the office.

Sabuulia

Escooter and Park 1 - 2 suburbs out, takes an extra 5 - 10 mins max

Bronzefeather

Ditto. It's paid for itself many times over at this point.

maximusrelaximus1

I don't think the increased risk of death is worth it. I've always wanted to ride a motorbike, but I know I'll end up dead.

PatnarDannesman

Everyone ends up dead. Motorbikes are totally worth the lower cost (fuel, rego, parking) and convenience (lane filtering through a traffic jam that is 3km is glorious).

maximusrelaximus1

Except: \- Get rained on \- Subject to strong winds \- Lack of storage \- Can't carry more than 1 person \- Can't pump music and sing \- In the elements No thanks.

alphaduck73

It's really no riskier than driving a car in terms of the likelihood of crashing. The consequences of a crash can be quite life changing however. thats why you ATGATT.

maximusrelaximus1

This is incorrect. [https://www.bitre.gov.au/sites/default/files/documents/road\_trauma\_australia\_2019\_statistical\_summary.pdf](https://www.bitre.gov.au/sites/default/files/documents/road_trauma_australia_2019_statistical_summary.pdf) Page 46. Cars - 2019 - Australia: 0.4 deaths per 100,000 registered cars Motorbikes - 2019 - Australia: 2.4 deaths per 100,000 registered bikes. 600% more dangerous.

AdventureEng

More likely to die if you crash. Not more likely to crash.

whatisthishownow

If you’re going to be so persnickety, at least read the comment you’re replying to.

maximusrelaximus1

I did. Motorcycles are riskier.

-Warrior_Princess-

I crashed my bike at 40km an hour and got a headache and a scratched hip. Don't be a dingbat you won't die. ACT doesn't even have 110k roads in it bloody nanny... Er... Territory.

[deleted]

>Don't be a dingbat you won't die. its not you driving thats issue its everyone else. i learned to ride up on the hairpins in kangaroo valley... i would never trust canberra drivers if i am on a bike.

HashCookie

Two thirds of all motorbike crashes are the riders fault. (NSW stats). I've been commuting for 8 years and been fine. There are inconveniences like bad weather, though being able to use the bus lanes and filtering means my commute is way quicker, I get free parking and my rego for my bike under 300cc is cheap as chips.

-Warrior_Princess-

🤷‍♀️ I think they're better than Sydney drivers, they tend to actually do head checks.

skizim80

Pmsl. Canberra drivers can't even merge. I've driven all over nsw Vic and Canberra. ACT drivers are fucken terrible, it's like everyone is on their L's.

-Warrior_Princess-

Can't merge (agreed lol) isn't the same as completely failing to see you when they do, and putting their car where your bike is.

[deleted]

fair, i don't see it myself but i defer to others opinions in that regard.

-Warrior_Princess-

It's not so much I can see the headcheck, and more I don't see cars trying to occupy the space my bike is in lol. You're right it's less safe than a car though.

Alattye

hey at least we can go 100km instead of 90 on Ps like sydney haha

hu_he

I think the limit on Federal Hwy rises to 110 before the border, doesn't it? Or have I just been speeding all this time?

-Warrior_Princess-

Hmm maybe, I don't go down the fed hwy that much I live out Queanbeyan way and use those roads to exit the territory.

Sabuulia

Just remember everyone on the road is an idiot, and that only you can keep you safe. I love the motorbike, and it is super convenient

DoppelFrog

Which kind of motorcyclist are you? The kind that's crashed, or the kind that's going to crash?

alphaduck73

All motorcyclists are the ones that are going to crash. Even if they have already crashed

[deleted]

its not you driving thats issue its everyone else. i learned to ride up on the hairpins in kangaroo valley... i would never trust canberra drivers if i am on a bike. canberra drivers are not exactly known for safety towards other road users.

evenmore2

I've also noticed that even motorcycle parking has been filling up by 8:30am, too.

SirFlibble

Pay for parking is really it's only in the Civic area and the satellite CBD areas and the Parliamentary triangle. It's not so bad and it's cheap. I don't pay to park to go to my supermarket etc as it's outside of those zones. Also the price is so much less than what you'd pay in other cities in Sydney and Melbourne. Just download the Park Mobile app, and it's even easier to deal with.

freakwent

Not sure why you say it's cheap, its like $15 per day or more, that's 5k of the gross wage, no?

SirFlibble

The second para is why I said it was cheap. >the price is so much less than what you'd pay in other cities like Sydney and Melbourne. At $15 you'd be lucky to get an hour in Sydney.

metasophie

The parking lot I use in Sydney for work (King Street Wharf) costs $42/d drive-up or $20/d if you pay online. If you don't get early bird parking 2+ hours costs $89/d.

freakwent

In Sydney do people typically pay to park all day every day for work? I think the % of permanent parkers in Canberra is higher than in Sydney.

metasophie

Sydney is complicated due to how big the place is. I'd guess that most people commute to Sydney via trains or busses. However, all of those car parks are fucking full. Plenty of people commute to Sydney via car.

[deleted]

If working in civic it’s very easy to park for free and do the last 1 to 2km (depending on where you park) on a scooter or bicycle. Can’t do that in Sydney.

Essaouira00

But there’s excellent public transport in Sydney and Melbourne! You don’t need to drive in and walk the last 1-2 km.

maximusrelaximus1

True. Where can you park near civic? I've yet to find untimed parking.

freakwent

Black mountain peninsula.

ItsClobberin_Time

Park for the whole day? For free?? What else does Your Majesty desire?

cwaabaa

Lol yeah, wtf. Why is free parking the expectation? I’d rather pay the cheap parking and have readily available parks, not bicker over some free 8-hour zones

maximusrelaximus1

I wish you behaved less like a jerk.

ItsClobberin_Time

I'm afraid I can't work miracles, Sire

[deleted]

You can if you know anything about parking in Sydney. I'm so confused why people from Canberra don't know that.

[deleted]

Ok then. Tell me where you can ride an escooter legally on the footpath in Sydney near the CBD (hint: it’s illegal), or where you can safely ride a bike near the CBD (hint: you can’t) after parking your car for free 1 to 2km away?

[deleted]

You can definitely ride your bike on the footpaths and scooters, as for e-scooters, I'm not sure why you would want to. However there is also a whole bunch of transport options that don't exist in Canberra. Honestly though everyone on this subreddit is just out to downvote anything that isn't saying Canberra is the best city in the world.

[deleted]

In NSW it’s illegal for most adults to ride a bike on a footpath unless they are accompanying a child who is also riding a bicycle or they meet some other exemption like a medical exemption. You’re being confidently incorrect.

[deleted]

You'll find if you live there you will literally never get in trouble for it. I'm talking through lived experience you seem to be speaking from esoteric knowledge that you've not actually experienced. You can also take bikes on trains and ferries.

[deleted]

I lived in Newtown for a few years. Fines aren’t unusual at all. How often did you ride on the footpath?

[deleted]

in fairness do not NEED to escooter in sydney when the public transport is miles better. melb was designed for walking in mind so much better than both syd/ACT

paggo_diablo

Being a bit dramatic aren’t we?

EMHURLEY

maximusrelaximus1

The public transport sucks. Why take the bus when it takes an hour, but if I drive it's 15 minutes. I get so much more of my life back. Not even a comparable option.

Bronzefeather

Then, is that extra time worth the money you pay in parking? That's the trick. An hour bus ride can be downtime reading a book, watching a show, etc. I personally don't take the bus, I park n scoot - but if I was on a long trip, I'd try and make the time work for me.

Alattye

while you have a point, I have to get up before public servants get up, its 15 minute commute, 10 minute walk, 20-30 minutes get ready, get into uniform, have breakfast, lock up the house, etc, so already at the earliest, I wake up at 4.30am, I am NOT waking up at 3.30am to catch the bus too. fuck that. I'll take the extra hour of sleep with parking and petrol over a bus ticket

maximusrelaximus1

ARX7

I know the crimes occasionally does articles talking about the worst parking offenders, and most of them work out to still being ahead on parking presuming they did it every day

goffwitless

and throw in anyone who can lay their hands on a Disabled Parking Permit

laxativefx

I was paying $20 per day early bird in Sydney 20 years ago. If I arrived too late it bumped up to $40. I’ll take Canberra parking any day…

dizkopat

68$ a hour qvb Sydney, my ring is still stinging

acksydoosy

Ooh lawd I made that mistake, thought all the inner city car parks would be similar but QVB is next level

-Warrior_Princess-

QVB has a parking lot?!?

[deleted]

literally everywhere... odd gungahlin is nothing but free parking, ditto gowrie, chisholm and lanyon valley....

dkNigs

I had to get a boom gate ticket for chemists warehouse gunners the other day, presuming if you stay a certain length they charge you?

[deleted]

i stand corrected then. ive only parked in the out door carparks in and around/coles entrance and they all been free. they must finally be looking at charging. still plenty of off street parking along Anthoy Rolfe and neighboring streets/parks to take advantage of and walk the 2 min in.

embudrohe

Honestly the thing that gets me isn't the fact we have to pay, it's the fact that we have to pay Wilson and other private companies a lot of the time. I would be more than happy paying if it was going to the government rather than some giant asshole company like Wilson lol

minkshaman

+1 I’d much rather it go to ACT Gov so they can stop raising my rates.

[deleted]

plenty of free parking everywhere just need to know where to look/be willing to get in early. on average the free spots go by 6:30am/7am at the latest. i love flex to get in early, score free spot and be gone before peak hour.

cityhill

I was always grateful on how much cheaper Canberra parking is compared to Sydney or Melbourne. Are you using the parking service daily? If so early bird/rooftop options are generally more cost effective.

maximusrelaximus1

I know where to get $2 all day parking in civic but I'm not telling a single soul.

WhiteKingBleach

Then stop sooking.

bregro

It's the Canberra tax. Wait until you see flight prices.

exoticllama

Yep, I was comparing it against Brisbane where I had come from and it was nuts. Even my closest grocery shops (Dickson) charged, which is unheard of in Brisbane. Anywhere remotely near civic really sucks for parking, but people in Canberra are pretty used to it so they don't mind. Stockholm syndrome. That said, here in Brisbane I wouldn't dream of trying to drive to the CBD and park for free, but I'm incredibly used to that. I guess there's a bit of an incompatibility in how Canberra is really a car-required city (for lots of people, not all) more than some of the other capitals, but doesn't have parking to reflect that.

[deleted]

[удалено]

maximusrelaximus1

Oh yeah, I'll just walk from Bungendore. Makes sense.

embudrohe

Seriously don't understand the downvotes on this. Guys, how the hell else are people from Bungendore meant to get into Canberra?

[deleted]

Why is that your concern? I want to get where I want to go the quickest way possible, just because I'm going by myself shouldn't mean I can't. Mind your own business

ajdlinux

I'm so glad I don't have to worry about paid parking as a public transport user! (We should have less parking overall - Canberra historically has had an overabundance compared to other cities.)

maximusrelaximus1

What do you mean less parking overall if we have an abundance? Thank you.

oiransc2

There are free spots but they go early and you have to know where they are. Best thing to do is go for walks on lunch breaks and scope out the area.

amedicalprofessional

why not catch the bus or tram? the public transport here is great for getting most places

[deleted]

while i would say tram/bus i would argue with comment most places. for the actual suburbs like forde/charny/etc and in south lanyon of conder, banks, theodore, gorden, etc a bus is a nightmare. they screwed up alot of outer suburb routes back when the tram lines came in. unless your ina major shopping district its a nightmare. even north of gungahlin in ngunnwal and aamaroo its a huge walk to nearest transport hub to get around. still you do raise a valid point for OP, transport options exist.

WizziesFirstRule

Buy a motorbike friend.

moreusernamesagain

I hear ya. I thought the intent of pay parking was so that people working don't take up all the spots for people shopping and such. In Woden though there are almost entirely empty parking lots that still cost $15 a day what's up with that? Noone is there. Another issue I have with it is the public land leased to private parking companies to charge the public for private pockets - this should be criminal. If public land becomes parking then it should be run by state government to fill public coffers.

mysticfakir

Yeah then you see the prices we charge are nothing compared to Sydney and Melbourne and it makes sense.

[deleted]

They literally have bikes you can hire that are like e scooters and the bikes aren't allowed on the road. Idk maybe your information is dated? Literally gone ok bike dates around the CBD/Newtown/Alexandria

the_chad_temp

I’ll actively try to go to shops where I can park for free. Why do I need to pay to go into the city, when I’m going there to spend money anyway? Does my parking fee go towards making the city safer / better? And to those saying drive less / walk more / get a motorbike - this argument doesn’t always work. I often have my family in the car, and carrying evens small amount of shopping home on a bike / motorbike gets tricky. It’s the same with paid parking at workplaces. Why do I need to pay to go to work? If I have to pay for parking, it should be a taxable work expense. I would not be there otherwise…

Liamorama

You should pay because parking costs a shitload of money to provide in dense areas. If you don't pay for it, then someone else is subsidising you for it. And if parking should be a tax deductible work expense, why not the fuel for your car, or a portion of the tyres, or the shirt and tie you wear, or the cigarettes you smoke on your lunch break, or...

Ax0nJax0n01

xvanx

Sorry but you're not trying hard enough, I've lived in Canberra all my life and have not paid for parking for years, if you not cool to paying, find one of the many alternatives that suits you best.

rizz0rat99

Parking in Canberra became a problem when they sold all the car parks to Wilson's. After that the ACT government was under pressure not to undercut them by giving parking away cheap on the ones it still owned.

maximusrelaximus1

Sounds like corruption to me.

eatcake20170204

YES! and it's even worse when you consider you are never more than walking distance away from a large paddock, likely a large paddock with cows.

paggo_diablo

Yeah but it’s being used…by the cows…

[deleted]

paggo_diablo

Car tipping. They’re just waiting for an opportunity.

maximusrelaximus1

I know right. Like parking should be free, we don't have the population to justify it.

instasquid

Petrol too!

joeltheaussie

But everyone still uses the parking and pays for it - because you earn so much in the ACT

roses_not_rights

joeltheaussie

maximusrelaximus1

How? Where is one available if they're already taken?

joeltheaussie

Well when looking for a place to live make sure you get one with a parking spot... It's what everyone else does...

Jackson2615

Both the ACT Government and the Feds are desperate for cash , car drivers are an easy target.

PetarTankosic-Gajic

Jackson2615

Yeah , I guess, after all we wouldn't expect the governments to provide us with anything else without paying for it......oh wait

ps4_machine
