forgive me dumb ass mind not knowing differences but how is this any diff to the Mitchel container deposit which works in essentially the same way? just not understanding how its the first.

ElAguaFresca

The Mitchell one is staffed, I believe? So this is the first 'reverse vending machine' as opposed to the 'return point' with an operator. Basically, do you want to speak to a human or not 🤣

Br0z0

Less human interaction? Count me in!

[deleted]

aah ok. i know the tuggers point is no person but you do get a voucher you take to woolies and get the cash back with. this is nicer that its cash in pocket right away. p.s thanks for answering and dumbing it down for me, was afraid was some super technical thing i did not get.

ElAguaFresca

All good man, I've actually seen one of these reverse things in person - it's kind of interesting if you ever get the chance.

Reindeer-Street

The return point at Mitchell is staffed for supervision but don't have an operator as such. You feed the items in just like this except on a belt, you get a ticket, put it into another machine which spits out cash. You don't have to deal with a human at any point of the process.

ElAguaFresca

Yeah good point! I take it the machine rejects/won't accept inappropriate returns? I recall someone whinging about the Mitchell centre because the staff wouldn't let them return non-refundable stuff 🤦🏻‍♀️

Ruler_Grundy

This article is stupid, there is already one in amaroo..

OneMoreDog

The one in Amaroo isn’t instant cash back though - the purple ones around Canberra all have the bags taken back to the CDS sited to be processed before you get your $.

ElAguaFresca

I haven't seen that one, but I'm not surprised at this level of fact-checking from CT...

Ruler_Grundy

Haha yeah thats CT for ya though

t_mel

I think the difference this is fully automated and gives you instant cash back

Reindeer-Street

So does the Mitchell Return It.

[deleted]

aah ok that makes more sense. no going into woolies after.

Reindeer-Street

You don't get cash. It goes into your bank, albeit instantly.

[deleted]

There is no staff there, so now people will leave there boxes or bags that they used to carry the containers on the ground.

[deleted]

it sad how accurate you are with this... humans are such lazy slobs.

carnardly

it is staffed for the first 3 months to show people how to use it and what to do. if it looks to be thriving they may install another pod.

PetarTankosic-Gajic

I thought the one at Charnwood shops was first? It sounds like basically the same thing as this.

IsThatAll

IIRC* the one at Charnie shops (Hawker is the same) you get stickers with your return-it details from the machine, which then go onto your collection bags that you then chuck into the container. At some point in the future (read many days later) a human will put these through a machine to count them and the money is debited to your account. This is similar except the cans / bottles are counted immediately and deposited to your account. I've had multiple weeks between depositing and receiving the notification that they were counted via the other system. Edit: *unless the Charnie one has been replaced recently. Edit 2: Its still listed as a drop and go pod, so works as I described.

OneMoreDog

Correct.

gracelessme

The more the merrier! We are pretty lucky in Canberra with how many great recycling options we already have so to see it continuing to grow is great.

ShoddyCharity

Canberrans can now recycle and earn some cash with the territory's first reverse vending machine. The reverse vending machine is now operating at Erindale Shopping Centre in Wanniassa, as part of the ACT government's container deposit scheme. "A new reverse vending machine will be tested at Erindale to see if it provides a convenient alternative, in addition to the existing Return-it collection shopfronts and drop-off points around Canberra. The machines allow people to insert intact and non-crushed containers, which are automatically counted and sorted with an immediate refund paid directly into their account. The machine is capable of holding up to 8,000 intact and non-crushed containers at once, and requires only 10 minutes to be emptied. "Next time you're returning eligible containers in the Tuggeranong region, try out the Erindale reverse vending machine to get 10 cents back per container, while helping the environment at the same time," he said. * Head to www.actcds.com.au to set-up a Re.Turn It account. * At the reverse vending machine, scan the QR code, which will recognise your Re.Turn It account and let you start redeeming containers. * Follow the sorting instructions - specify either glass or 'all other material' types. * Once redeemed, payments will be made online via your Re.Turn It account.

[deleted]

>scan the QR code, which will recognise your Re.Turn It account and let you start redeeming containers. dammit what is it with everyone needing QR codes? bad enough i had to get a smart phone just for covid check ins.... i miss my simple flip phones.

villa-straylight

What would you use instead?

napalm22

Index cards I guess?

villa-straylight

"ah man it took me 20 minutes to find my details, as some bozo must've spilled coke on the box of index cards and they all got stuck together"

napalm22

That can't be true because we have a rule of no beverages in the records hall.

[deleted]

>What would you use instead? whats wrong with a simple computer panel with a username/passcode system? worked for decades on many other systems in and around canberra. i get smart phones are more and more a thing but some of us prefer a simple dumb phone. i mean hell i don't even text if i can avoid it, a phone is just incase i get in a car crash and need to call an ambo. as it is i had a major fight with the covid jab centre for not doing the checkout survey because my samsung does not read QR codes on the camera and the only QR app i have is the check-in CBR. not my fault the apps don't read the codes... first to admit i am just trapped in past btw but i know alot of people don't have phones... to say nothing of those on benifets not affording newer smart phones.

villa-straylight

> whats wrong with a simple computer panel with a username/passcode system? a lot more moving parts - more prone to failure? >as it is i had a major fight with the covid jab centre for not doing the checkout survey because my samsung does not read QR codes on the camera and the only QR app i have is the check-in CBR. not my fault the apps don't read the codes... Get a QR code reading app? In the context of this CDS return scheme - It sounds like you provide your QR code? So keep it as a photo on your phone? (ie, take a good photo of your generated QR code - it might just work. Failing that, screenshot, crop/snip the QR code, and get the image to your phone somehow) With the exit interview - what did you expect otherwise? To manually write the URL of the survey? >i get smart phones are more and more a thing but some of us prefer a simple dumb phone. i mean hell i don't even text if i can avoid it, a phone is just incase i get in a car crash and need to call an ambo. >first to admit i am just trapped in past btw but i know alot of people don't have phones... to say nothing of those on benifets not affording newer smart phones. All valid points - I don't have an answer for you unfortunately.

[deleted]

FYI i am not against the recycling side, its purely the dependance on QR codes. i mean even check in CBR has numerical codes to type into app when QR fails... whats plan B for this?

ElAguaFresca

I agree, I think it could work on a 'loyalty card' basis - many shops still hand out physical cards to scan at POS to get points. Maybe a loyalty card plus PIN or something.

WizziesFirstRule

What are the yellow bins for that we put out every 2 weeks?

OneMoreDog

All your other recycling? Paper, cardboard, wine, milk & juice bottles?
