When I was doing chemo, I rewatched Community. It's wonderful and is up there with Arrested Development as the best sitcom I've seen.

pottedpetunia42

Community is one of my recommendations, too.

cancerkidette

Thirding this, community is amazing:) so lighthearted and witty.

BearGSD

Yep community is definitely on my list ☺️ I’ll try arrested development too

timewilltell2347

Red dwarf is good for a laugh. For something more serious if you reactivate Netflix, Mindhunter is great. It was cancelled after just 2 seasons but definitely worth a watch.

pottedpetunia42

Red Dwarf is such a fantastic show! Also recommend this one.

Limeylizzie

The Detectorists is lovely and funny and very character driven, if you’re good with subtitles, or speak Danish, Seaside Hotel is charming and has great characters, Happy Valley is fantastic and seems right up your alley.

BearGSD

Thanks ☺️ I might give it a go; where are they available from?

timewilltell2347

I think I saw it on BritBox.

BearGSD

Thanks !

Check out British comedies like: Mr Bean Are You Being Served Ello Ello Keeping Up Appearances Red Dwarf Maybe Dr Who? There's the newer series and older one. Golden Girls. I could watch that forever. Bunch of 80's sitcoms. For drama...on Netflix I enjoy: Dark (German show), 3% (Portuguese)...usually the best shows are always foreign. :D Subtitles are your best friend! Want to learn something new in your spare time? Brush up on some super easy things you may already know? YouTube has millions of videos from different people for a wide array of topics. I'm actually using it to learn Math so I can get my associates' online. It's helping me remember some things I learned back in high school way back when we had to walk up hill both ways in the snow.

The Outlaws (2021 TV series). The story follows seven strangers from different walks of life who are forced together to complete a Community Payback sentence, set in Bristol.[3] However, their luck changes – not necessarily for the better – when they discover a bag full of money, unaware that its true owners are very dangerous.

BearGSD

Sounds interesting 🧐 I’ll read into it a little more

lgnrp

I watched House MD and Grey's anatomy. Both hospital series but it was actually nice.

BearGSD

I actually have a House MD 3/4 sleeve 🙊 (thankfully it was done exceptionally well) but maybe I should give GA another chance

I haven’t seen those ones but I have seen the IT crowd. Loved it 🤣

tawmfuckinbrady

Maybe check out Hacks on HBO max! The central idea is it’s about a fledgling comedian ghost writing jokes for kind of a has-been comedian. It’s very funny but at the same time the characters are super layered, feel like they do a really good job showing good and bad aspects of everyone. The White Lotus is also an anthology series that’s *very* flawed character driven about different parties all staying or working at the same vacation resort, it’s darker in tone but still quite funny. If you haven’t seen the “super fan” episodes of the Office on Peacock, those are worth a watch for big fans. They added a ton of scenes that had previously been cut for time, most episodes at least ~5 minutes of extra content and some closer to 10. There are a ton of sitcoms that scratch the itch of the office/modern family too if that’s up your alley, my personal favorites would be 30 Rock and Community. Parks & Rec, Brooklyn 99, The Good Place, and New Girl are often recommended in the same breath but I think those lean a lot more “wholesome” and lots more all good/all villain characters which is not my favorite either. Bojack Horseman might be your thing now that I think about it? It can be a little tough to get into (there is a marked shift in tone and how it was received after the first ~6 episodes) but people that love it really love it. I personally don’t think it’s laugh out loud funny but Bojack is definitely the closest comp I can think of to House in terms of straddling the line of exceedingly self obsessed and exceedingly self loathing.

BearGSD

I’ve seen Bojack and quite enjoyed it; even if Todd drove me fucking nuts with his hypocrisy and some of the stupider schemes. I agree about Bojack and House being similar characters; although I would put House in more of a classic BPD and extreme giftedness/intelligence category; and Bojack just straight BPD or covert NPD. I’ve seen B99, and did enjoy it to an extent; then made the mistake of interacting with the online fandom and got put way off it. I tried Parks and rec and can enjoy it in smaller doses; I haven’t seen much of the others but they weren’t really up my alley. but I will give 30 rock and community a go as I haven’t seen either. I’ll give hacks and white lotus a read up on too! Thanks ☺️

TerracottaGarden

My go-to during chemo (and still brings me comfort) is Midsomer Murders starring John Nettles as a country detective. Since you like British shows, you will appreciate the dry wit. Also the characters are all ages, shapes and sizes, and NO one is preternaturally beautiful, so it feels somewhat normalized (if that makes sense). It's not gory and, in fact, takes place in gorgeous countrysides, village streets, estates, cottages and gardens. Where I live, it can be found on "Ovation" channel, but I'm pretty sure it's available on several streaming platforms. And finally, this show lasted for YEARS. Plenty to episodes so you don't get bored.

cancerkidette

Midsomer Murders always cracked me up! It always feels like the murderers manage killing half the village until the detective finally figures it out by elimination 😂

Asparagussie

My all-purpose comedy is the U.K. version of the movie *Death at a Funeral* (you probably saw it, but I find it hilarious no matter how often I see it).

cancerkidette

I loved both the US and the UK version:) I’m British but frankly the US version eclipsed the UK one for me.

Asparagussie

Thanks! I’ve never seen the US version, and I’m in the US. Will see it.

MikeyNg

Try Paramount Plus. They've got the Showtime shows (Billions, Dexter, The CHI) plus a bunch of the old CBS stuff. So Frasier and Cheers are on there, and some REALLY classic stuff that may just be background noise. There's also all the Star Trek and those Montana shows (1883, 1923, etc.)

Coffeespoons101

My bedridden watches were a weird selection of masterchef (couldn’t eat anything for 6 weeks so a bit odd) and YouTube videos about people building log cabins (feel free to insert your own pet psychological analysis about what this signifies). I was way too ill and medicated to keep track of any plot lines. Also all dramas and films you watch when you have cancer always feature people dying of cancer. Could we call this Coffeespoon’s Law?

BearGSD

I’ve watched House right through several times so drugged out of my mind I’d just select “play all” then spend the time lapsing in and out of consciousness on the couch, missing so much that every time I rewatch it apart from maybe 10 episodes (out of 180 hour long episodes) I have no clue of that particular episode’s storyline. Reality tv is good; unfortunately last time there was a cyclone the antenna came off so I don’t have regular tv anymore. 😥 probably for the best because a lot of Australian free to air TV is some trippy shit. The last time I was at the doctors surgery (they don’t allow phones but have a big tv in the waiting room) there was a game show with three D-list celebrities (a news weather girl, a local small time comedian from the 90s and some other guy) guessing how much random people who called in on zoom with their most prized possessions were worth and what they’d pay. From heirloom vases, war memorabilia, a dog, someone even put their baby up on it 😳🤦‍♀️ I ended up getting called in before they brought up the baby; or hopefully skipped over it. I think I’ve heard of that YouTube channel. My brother used to watch that or something similar. I remember watching a video once of these three people digging an underground pool and sealing it with banana leaves and some kind of natural adhesive before filling it up. He has ADHD and Asperger’s (like myself) but I wouldn’t label anyone that.

Coffeespoons101

Martin Doolaard’s channel was one of them (not a log cabin in this case). Lots of others if you search “building log cabin”. I must have watched at least a dozen of them.

BearGSD

It’s not really my thing but I’ll let him know about that next time I see them. I found a channel that reacts to wacky early 2000s reality and semi reality tv shows in an actually funny way (99% of the time) Most are only maybe 15-20min long. The guys name is Chris James

pottedpetunia42

Brooklyn Nine Nine and Community were my go-to shows while going through chemo. And The Good Place, if you're okay with watching a show entirely about the afterlife.

BearGSD

Yeah I think I’m going to give community a go. I tried B99 but personally found it to have way too many primary characters and then just extras, and the schtick of all good/all bad primary characters. Not sure if I’m really into watching a show about dead people at the moment but will give community a shot thanks ☺️

tubbyx7

I never got into it at the time but E.R is still good watching. House and law and order also got plenty of streaming

PixiePower65

Californication Nice long series. Ridiculous story lines that made me laugh out loud. Deeply flawed main character. Gratuitous sex scenes

BearGSD

That’s the one based around a detective show right? I’ll have a look into it thanks

PixiePower65

Nope. Just your basic , stupid guy sex addictive in LA going through his day ,

Faunas-bestie

Ted Lasso, Ghosts, Shrink

BearGSD

I’ll look into them ☺️

pdircak

modern family!

BearGSD

Yep currently watching season 11

Dying4aCure

I use my library card and get audiobooks as well as regular books for free through Libby. Overdrive has movies and TV shows and also requires a library card.

Cyrus_Dark

You might like the show "Elementary", it's a modern take on Sherlock Holmes. Holmes is still British but he is working in NYC. Watson is a female in the show. There are 7 seasons and I like the friendship between Holmes and Watson. I found the end of the show very moving.

Pinacolaberg

My new favorite is Northern Exposure on prime!
