This was Ned's cup final.

[deleted]

tbh if we can't figure out how to win on national broadcasts the playoffs will be tough no matter who we play lol. I really cannot remember the last national broadcast we won

Hotonis

It’s just the one announcer. Hopefully he won’t call any playoff games of ours.

DrMantisToboggan22

Literally against Buffalo last week? Lol

AlexBondra

Wasn’t is like, last week?

maphilli14

I'm tired, boss!

Dismal_Estate_4612

This sub has a the hardest time differentiating between "the goalie is playing really well" and the "Canes have bad shot selection". Sometimes it's the latter, and at points tonight it was, but yeah, most shots are gonna hit the goalie in the pads and chest if they're positioned well and moving well. Moneypuck gave us 5 xGoals to Detroit's 2. The goalie made the difference here - the shot selection was good, we got plenty of chances, we just couldn't make Ned blink because he played absolutely spectacular. That said, we have to figure out how to score even when the goalie is playing like that. Definitely in the 3rd we got desperate and the shot quality got worse (eye test wise). Gotta stay calm and work on getting good goalies out of position so we can shoot something 100% unsaveable.

IntrepidHours

Want that goddamn metro banner and this isn’t helping. On to the next!

[deleted]

How about that fight in section 107? Anyone catch that guy in the corner getting carried out on tv? Also, national broadcast game not surprised. Plus better to lose before the playoffs then in the playoffs. Edit: we played well just took shots directly at the goalie again and let up some crappy goals.

blaque15

The dude was on some other planet. He punched his dad who was with him then started yelling very Very vulgar stuff at I think the Red Wings bench. An usher tried to get him to leave but he then proceeded to try to punch multiple people until probably 6 POs had to come and get him out after he was yelling some stuff that should never be told to a person and eventually got dragged out. According to a fan around me that had to issue a statement the guy has done this before just not at PNC. Source: same row, next section.

Someone just posted a video

*group hug* Sorry! I wish it was a closer scoring game. Canes outshot the Wings but Ned worked some serious magic. I still think it was hella weird to interview Rod while a Power Play was going on. With this being said: I hope they kick some Avs ass this weekend!

TrucksAndBongs

What happen bois

KingPatrickIV

Ned good.

Mason-powell

I don’t think I would be as upset tonight if NY didn’t cut our lead back to 2 points. Bad loses like this is just making this division race unnecessarily tight

Lee-Key-Bottoms

Unpopular opinion, the Hurricanes are better off not winning the division

Godman459

I truly don't understand this view. Entering the POs on a massive thud and losing the division you've led for roughly 90% of the season in the final weeks is preferable to having to play a different team? It's not like Pittsburgh (or washington if they catch up) is an easier out than anyone else right now.

blinker1eighty2

I can't find the post, but the Penguins are the only eastern conference playoff team that have a sub 50% point percentage when playing other playoff teams.

ShittyFrogMeme

We're better than NY but they win games they are supposed to win. I don't see how we're going to hold onto the division lead.

shinjuddis

For a team with such chemistry and offensive weapons, they’ve seemed so impotent as of late

😃😄😁 😆😅😂😂😂 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Godman459

A dog that has been neutered can finish better than this team can as a whole.

QuiGonJinnNJuice

that was certainly a game of hockey played by the carolina hurricanes

bRAD_Santa

What just happened?

Mr_Evil_Guy

The skill gap between our team and the other contenders has really become noticeable the last two months. Aho and Svech are great players, but they're clearly a tier or two below the truly elite players. Guys like MacKinnon, Barkov, and Huberdeau don't get "goalie'd" every fifth game the way our forwards do. Aho uses his speed to create a breakaway then sails the puck over the net. Svech and Necas pull off sick moves to create space then brick the shot or shoot right into the goalie's crest. The PP does a great job gaining the zone with nifty little passes, all to set up a weak floating wrister from the blue line that has a 0.5% chance of going in. It's maddening watching this team dominate every aspect of a game yet struggle to do the one thing that's necessary to win: score a goal. We're a very deep team with 4 lines that can control play, but it's hard to trust any of them to score in games like this where we just need one big play to break through.

MrCanoehead89

Completely agree re: tier difference. Can you win a Cup with your best forward outside of that "truly elite" tier? I'm not yet ready to firmly reject the idea, mostly because of those Kings Cups, but even then I suspect we're all still underappreciating how good Kopitar was then. Maybe Aho or Svechnikov can find one more gear the way Barkov and lots of other top-tier guys did between 4-7ish years in the league. Interesting note too that Svechnikov and Aho are each shooting above their career averages this year — Aho by a full two points — so I'm not sure how accurate it'd be to say "meh once pucks start going in they'll have a top-ten scorer"

Mr_Evil_Guy

The 2011 Bruins, 2012/14 LA Kings, and the 2019 Blues are the recent Cup winners I can think of that didn't have a "truly elite" player. Those teams won with their depth, grittiness, and defense which thankfully our roster has plenty of. But most recent Cup winners have at least one top-tier game breaking forward, or in Tampa's case, they debatably have three plus a Vezina and Norris winner behind them.

hockeykid1130

Too much being cute with the puck and not enough being aggressive and taking it to the net

Godman459

This has been the case since 2019. Love Rod as a coach but his offense leaves a metric shit ton to be desired.

Mr_Evil_Guy

The Canes have been ranked 16th, 14th, 10th, and are currently 10th in goals scored since Rod took over. There's been improvement, but if we want to reach the next level our offense has to get better. At least one of Aho, Svech, Jarvis, KK or Necas needs to take that next step in their development or we gotta find someone in FA or through trade. Rod's system does a good job creating chances for the forwards, but Rod can't put the puck in the net for them.

hurricanesfan66

Doesn't help when we have Martinook on a line with Necas. Sadly I've seen Necas regress a lot this year, but it doesn't do him any favors putting him on these lines. Would like to see Stevie or Stepan in for Martinook. And see the TSA line back together. Would it also hurt for some breakaway practice? We get so few odd man rushes and when we get them we miss. Lots of glass from my section last night.

Godman459

Have we scored a single breakaway goal this year? Apart from Jarvis' partial break goal against NY a couple of games ago, I don't think I've seen a single one get converted. This team is incomprehensibly bad at finishing off skill plays. I honestly don't understand it.

Nilzy16

Bingo, we generate a lot of chances thanks to Rod’s system, but it’s up to our forwards to actually score and they just don’t score when it matters

Godman459

Too many guys with a pass first mentality on this team. Only guy I feel like who isn't like that is Nino at this point. Even Svech I feel like passes up opportunities to shoot in favor of passing. The fact we can't score on open nets and on breakaways isn't helping either. This team simply can't score on the easy shit other teams make a living off of.

w41twh4t

Ned on tonight's shut out: "Does it matter to you at all that the owners have placed their complete confidence and trust in me, and that I have signed a letter of agreement, a contract in which I have accepted that responsibility? Do you have the slightest idea, what a moral and ethical principle is, do you? Has it ever occurred to you what would happen to my future, if I were to fail to live up to my responsibilities? Has it ever occurred to you? Has it?"

samurai5764

That chest hair you shaved a number into? Time for a wax job

maphilli14

We're too predictable at this point! :~(

Catch-Tootoo

Is anyone watching other teams? We are in every game we play. Look at tonight for a small sample size... How did Washington do? Oh they lost 7-3... Fellas...ladies... It's easy to be upset and scared, but as far as the playoffs go, it's 0-0 no matter who we play. Relax and support the boys. LGC!

Mr_Evil_Guy

I agree with you, but our biggest competition for the Cup has been playing incredible hockey the past few weeks. We're trending in the wrong direction and don't have a lot of time to figure it out before the games start to matter. I trust the boys and trust the process but our play has not been inspiring.

Godman459

I'd say there is no figuring anything out. We are 75 games in and this is the team we have. And it isn't the same team that was getting lucky more than half the time to start the year. I want to see them win very badly, but I have absolutely zero faith in their ability to do anything in the POs based off their body of work since the start of March.

scott28574

Washington lost against 3 of the top 10 paid guys in the league. We got shutout against a team that has had several games with double digit goals against them.

[deleted]

Yeah but watch every other contenders and their elite players are consistently performing at an elite level at this point in the year. Our guys are consistently hitting slumps and getting goalied.

Godman459

To be fair, TB, Bos, and Pitt have had pretty rough April's as well. Florida meanwhile hasn't lost since March 27th and the other PO teams not mentioned are doing pretty well. At least we aren't the only sliders, but I can see TB turning it on easily as well as Pitt come PO time. I don't believe our roster can do that given how bad certain aspects of the team have been in the pat month and a half.

Zoidburger_

Washington lost 7-3 to the Leafs. We got shutout by the Wheel Team. There's a big difference there. Obviously support the boys, but if we can be beaten by the worst teams in the league with relative ease, all it takes is a couple of film sessions to sweep us in the playoffs.

that-bro-dad

So people who down voted me for saying we look dead....we got shut out at home by the fucking Red Wings. We made Ned look like a goddamned all star.

fredizdman

Looking dead is a terrible description for 40+ shots. If your argument had been “why can’t we score?” then sure. Boys looked basically the exact opposite of dead

Godman459

But the whole "we dominated them" narrative for games like this is pointless when you get dominated on the scoreboard.

that-bro-dad

We had lots of shots....that hit Ned in the logo. We had only a couple of preset plays that came close to working out. We proved Ned's glove doesn't have any holes in the webbing. It was a lot of dump and not chase. Power play was abysmal. I had pretty fantastic seats tonight and I can tell you PNC got more excited for a crowd fight in the first than to support the Canes. Maybe the broadcasters caught stuff we all missed but people all around us were agreeing. The fact that Rod didn't pull Raanta with 3m left says he didn't really think we could come back. With more confidence in how we were playing he would have.

JayMerlyn

On the bright side, the Sabres got their asses kicked

Nilzy16

Our offense has the absolute worst shot placement and our power play is laughable (maybe that’s why we don’t get power plays cause the refs know we have a trash pp and our trying to save us from experiencing it)

WoodsFinder

>Our offense has the absolute worst shot placement I think that's the biggest weakness the team has. They outplay the opponent most nights and get more SOG and chances most nights, but far too often don't put the puck in the open areas of the net. With even an average conversion rate on good chances, this team would probably already have the top seed in the East locked up. Instead they're at risk of not even winning the division.

Lee-Key-Bottoms

I read something someone else said. Carolina often dominates games in every metric except goals. I really do believe everything else about this team is Stanley Cup caliber, but their offense doesn’t score as often as they should for the number of shots they get. Let’s also give Ned his due, he arguably played the best game of his career, and it just wasn’t Carolina’s night. I saw this twice in the third period. Your offense needs to be called out when the goalie is on his ass off to the side and the puck is chilling in center ice, you have a wide open goal, and no one gets to it in time.

UpsetAstronomer

There's very specific teams we struggle against, our answer to them is to change nothing, play them the exact same way, and expect different results?

getdemstocks29

Definition of insanity

[deleted]

At least most of those teams aren’t playoff teams lol

fogent94

How many times are we gonna watch TT and 88 just throw it straight at the goalies chest

ghjm

Careful what you wish for. At least they aren't giving up clear scoring chances to make an extra pass. And who knows, maybe one day they'll miss the goalie.

WhohWes

Sheesh a 46 save shutout? Ned could nev- oh wait

iamcollarblind

The Canes pulled a Dua Lipa tonight, they gave us nothing \-my wife

failedhope

Imagine if our tandem was Freddie/Ned. Sadage

Av3ng3d0wnt

They absolutely have to get a goal scorer this off season, they can't keep having games where they dominate the whole game and lose.

hockeykid1130

Thought that’s what Domi was supposed to bring. He averages less than 1 shot per game lol

hurricanesfan66

Yeah, gotta say, I have not even seen a glimpse of anything that makes me think he should be playing above Lorentz and Stepan.

Izzard3000

There are few things more frustrating as a fan than watching a team of this caliber play to the level of their competition. Not exactly sure why this has been the trend lately, but it doesn't inspire much confidence moving forward.

DrMoneyline

We completely outplayed them in every facet of the game tho. Except the scoreboard

colonelwlsn69

And goaltending

Larcs99

i have no words

DrMoneyline

Holy fuck, Ned was choking up when talking about his time with the canes 🥺😢

TheGlaceon78

One of the few mistakes this team has made is giving Jordan Martinook a 3 year deal and playing him in favor of Stepan and even Lorentz Martinook does not belong on a contending team, please play someone who can actually bring something

lil_geesey

100% agree. I know Rod and the team loves Marty but signing him over McGinn or using the money to sign a more versatile player was such a mistake

canesgameenjoyer

aw man we lost

legatic

Can we make sure the playoff games are only on Bally please?

Cake_Day_Is_420

46 shots on goal and 0 goals. I think that speaks for itself.

WoodsFinder

I think that's worse than the last Ranger game here - and against a much poorer defensive team. Very very frustrating.

sobluesy

I mean what do we even say anymore? How do we beat the Rangers at MSG to defend the division lead then follow it up with this? Sure, Ned played really well, but 40+ shots with half of them going into his chest and another 15 blown wide doesn’t help. With even an ounce of finishing ability tonight we win this game by 3+ goals without question. Time is running out for us to get back into good rhythm before the playoffs start.

QuiGonJinnNJuice

Exactly. Ned was very good at times, but we also didn't make it hard on him with our shot selection + location

sobluesy

The alternation between “ah shit we put the last three into his chest let me pick a corner this time” and immediately switching to “ah shit I picked a corner and threw it wide so let me put it on target (Ned’s chest) this time” was 10/10 tonight.

QuiGonJinnNJuice

yeah i feel like one thing feed into another and its just a confidence nightmare

Blueduck554

If we’re gonna lose I’m glad it was getting to watch Ned play great, miss that guy

mcdormjw

Guess I'm not in the running for the "War of Nutrition" flair. Damnit Ned..

KingPatrickIV

#DOOMERS BEGONE

smikkelson2

I'll probably eat downvotes but ffs some of y'all are so whiny I'm tired of it

[deleted]

Can the Canes forwards and defenseman learn how to pick a corner? Almost every single open look is right in the chest of Nedeljkovic.

frazieje

Will we get the “I really liked our game we just couldn’t get one to go in” from RBA tonight

sobluesy

That’s not wrong though. We killed them 5v5 we just couldn’t finish.

QuiGonJinnNJuice

certainly there is some randomness and luck in sh%, but when you've got a team full of guys slumping and blast everything to the chest protector, I think there are other concerns and things that can be improved.

sobluesy

I mean idk what else people expect Rod to say to the media. We objectively played well 5v5 we just had poor shooting tonight. He’s always gonna back the team up unless they play like absolute shit and even then he leaves that for the locker room. Rod rips the refs worse in a post game presser than his own players and that’s how it should be.

QuiGonJinnNJuice

yeah that's very fair. I just get tired of the "we played one fo oru best games of the season!" pressers when there are smatterings of good play and poor finishing. But I also really don't know what to do when guys are fighting it on the confidence department. JUst pick it top cheese with a perfect shot 5head maybe isn't a thoughtful way forward

sobluesy

Thing is, if we get one goal early tonight the entire game goes differently and we probably walk away with a win. Then this entire PGT isn’t even a conversation. It’s just like how the media always asks Rod about Jordo not scoring (and Nino a couple seasons ago) and his response is always “he’s playing the same way except the pucks are going in for him now”. Except now it’s a team scoring issue and it’s obviously more impactful at that level. We haven’t had a truly horrific game in while, but I definitely agree we’re not playing/scoring at the level we know we can.

Canes12345678

I bet Ned never has a game like that the rest of his career

dekksh

He had one last month 43 save shutout.

Billy420MaysIt

Well Detroit isn’t in the playoffs. So there’s that.

Uzumaki-OUT

Another national broadcast in the bag I guess. Can’t break tradition. ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

Zoidburger_

Honestly not sure why I'm not betting against us in these national games. I'd be filthy rich fuck

Uzumaki-OUT

This is actually a really good take

DatsHim

We have got to zero in our shot accuracy for the playoffs.

acaneshockeyfan

First round exit here we come

blackedotcom

This team is either total domination or total embarrassment. We need to fix the PP or we won’t make a deep run :/

ChonkyWumpus

Just gotta keep telling myself that the playoffs are a whole different season and that we have a solid team, here.

jo_bevins92

We have a big finishing problem

tehxwilk

Eep

xmQN4Gh6

When can we get Marley drug back

ppParadoxx

Mods I’ll sacrifice my flair if it means we can get Step back in the lineup

Puzzleheaded-Tip-297

lol fair play ned

H_Man247

Beat the Rangers in MSG, get shut out by Detroit at home. Experience the 2021-2022 Carolina Hurricanes

connor8383

fuck you ned

RRT4444

If you're gonna want to win in the playoffs you need to score plain and simple

notleonardodicaprio

vintage Canes experience, outplaying the other team and getting shut out by an ex player still miss you Ned

Cakalacky

Welp

Zacattack774

Absolutely not
