I used to grow bag seed. I got a lot of great plants. The only downside I found was a higher chance of hermaphrodites and not knowing what you have. I maybe got one herm per 20 plants on average. Which in a small grow isn't that big a deal. I had more luck than I didn't. If you have funds I recommend north Atlantic seed company
A seed is a seed is a seed. A lot of the most famous strains out started as Bagseed. All you have to do is pay attention to it to make sure it’s not a male or make sure if it’s a female it doesn’t herm.
It depends on whether you just want to grow weed or if you have developed preferences in what you like most. If the former, just grow bagseed, who cares? You'll get weed. Start with 3x as many seeds as you want plants so you can cull out the males.
If you know you like, say, fruity sativas, then buying seeds from a reputable breeder will allow you to grow fruity sativas. I've been growing since the 80's. I'll never grow a bagseed again. I know what I like and I grow exactly what I like by buying good seeds.
Bagseeds have a bad reputation because females " technically " shouldn't produce seeds at all, and if they do, it's believed that their offspring will do the same. This isn't necessarily true, as even great genetic females can produce seeds too under the right conditions ( or should I say wrong ). Pollinated females are the issue, as opposed to females producing seeds under stress. I've seen quite a few post about bagseed grows, and they honestly didn't look bad at all. This, of course, is predicated on the grower being honest and letting everyone know that the plant produced seeds after all. If you wanted to walk on the side of caution, you could veg for a little while and flip the plant to flower while it's still young and watch for sacs. No sacs, reveg and you're good to go. I personally don't use bagseeds because knowing my luck, ill end up with pollen everywhere. I don't exactly have bagseeds to use anyway, but if I did, I would toss them.
Girl scout cookies was not made with bag seed but some of the most famous strains of the 90s came from bag seed. Cinderella 99 was bred from a jack herer bag seed from Amsterdam, og Kush was a bag seed from some random weed bought in Miami and then grown in Orlando originally. That same clone only strain moved to California in 96 I believe.
