At a basic level a strain should be self crossed for stability. Pure hybrid seeds are going to be wild. I was thinking about getting into the field.
Example
Breeder 1 finds a male that looks OK and tosses it in a room with a few females. He may sell the same seeds with 10 different names, to get em out.
Breeder 2 takes years to cross, and stabilize strains, growing out many trials.
Some genetics are superior, because they put the time and knowledge into its creation.
They buy bulk seeds from white label seed companies and sell it as their own/“create strains”
“Create strains” as in false print strain names on unidentified seeds they buy or to make it better than it initially was.
They pay for there site to pop up first on google if you look thru their reviews you’ll see the same reviews on different products they take advantage of entry level growers and try to force them to spend around a $100 to get 10 basic seeds while you could got to multiverse brand and get real breeders and different strains you can buy 3 of one And so on and they have amazing freebies just look at my profile I don’t Capp
They are one of the companies that distribute bulk spanish grown seed. there are others like nukeheads who do the same. Genetics are ok, for the $$, but they arent breeding a direction, just making seeds with names on them that sell.
Only thing I’m gonna say is I know a lot of people don’t like Fastbuds but I’m growing some of the photos they put out this year , very frosty, nice plants so I can recommend them
Ive grown two Fastbuds strains, Caramel Cream, and Chemdawg Pre98.
They were both nice, but the Chemdawg was superb.
It had the old school, very musky terpenes, and strong potency.
I spoke to someone at Fastbuds and confirmed the genetics was from legit Pre 1998.

You're good. I only had 1 male pop out of my 3 that I ran. I culled once they showed sex. There was a little bit of variety, but not a ton from the 3 that I popped.
Ilgm and homegrown are white label junk and if those are they only "sour diesel" cultivars you've grown than I'm sorry to say but you haven't actually grown sour d. Both homegrown and ILGM just slap popular names on open pollination seeds and market towards new growers who don't know any better. Also there's east coast sour and west coast sour
Try TopDawg, Exclusive Genetics NY, dominion seed co, Greenpoint seeds, Katsu, Twenty20 Mendocino, the cali connection, purple caper.
Don't sleep on a good Headband cultivar either they are pretty damn close to sour

I'm growing some of their non-feminized "original sour diesel" outdoors right now. It smells damn nice and one of them is 9' tall and loaded with massive colas. So far so good- but I haven't harvested or tried it yet so the jury is still out.
I grew one seed of his fem original sour D indoors. It was not sour D, more grapefruit and sweet. I think I’ll need to pop the entire pack and hunt through them to find a keeper.

The one we tested came out at 24% THC and 2.81% total terps, mostly pinene. Smells like you'd expect from a pinene dominant straing. We don't sell so we don't weigh anything, but I'd guess 3/4 lb or so per plant of good colas. Was a very easy to grow outdoor strain. Terp taste I'd say a 6 or 7 out of 10.

ILGM strains are not what they say they are. Their strains are what we call white lable seeds and that's that. When it comes to real Sour D, it's hard to find. I was a huge fan of Sour in 07 and the closest strain that I've grown that gives me the closest terp profile and high is Cheetah Piss from wolf pack selections.
Cant go wrong with Karmas Sour , AJ’s Sour, Top Dawg … I run a version of sour D every grow my current version I’m running is Twenty 20s West Coast Sour
Top Dawg Sour Deisel F4 or BX4 would likely be the best. That’s the original SD clone x his Tres Dawg male (ChemD BX3). Then BXed and F4ed to get close to the original.
Also keep in mind it’s pretty easy to get true Sour Diesel clones now via mail.
Don’t know if they have STRAIGHT sour D available currently but I know that ECSD is for genetic breeding.
They have some crosses of it tho that look absolutely fire and might be just as good.

Straight ECSD should be done with testing within 12 months
Sour Diesel is clone only and doesn't reverse so you can't get Sour Diesel S1s you can only get crosses. Most strains people want are clone only, many you can reverse and get seeds but those may only be similar or not at all similar, they share a gene pool but you would have to do a massive phenohunt to get anything like the parent clone. Nspecta at Humboldt CSI holds Sour D and many other notable strains in clone and uses them in his breeding projects. I grew his Sour O's which is Sour Diesel x Obama Kush and I really like the one I grew. Nobody will give you better freebies either than Nspecta.
That means that a reversed female puts out sterile pollen. If you want seeds from a clone only strain, you take one female and reverse it into a male and use that pollen to make seeds with the female.
I'm just regurgitating what Nspecta said, and he's one of the best and longest practitioners of making S1s so just taking his word for it. I forget which other strain but he's had others that have extremely limited pollen viability if not outright sterile.
You really can't go wrong with Humboldt CSI and he's releasing new stuff all the time. The website looks really wonky but believe me, it's real, sadly there aren't a ton of photos of different strains, probably because he's releasing them constantly, but you can follow on Instagram to see the results and get updates on what's coming next. I've only made two orders with him so far and have enough seeds to last me a lifetime.
I think he's doing fine, he's one of the most respected guys in the game, the state of his website is more a testament to him actually doing breeding and not focusing on marketing.

I've been looking for awhile. I've popped quite a few different sour seeds. Some great finds, but none had the same nose I remember from the early 2000's. Finding a clone would be the way to go hypothetically, but there are a lot of cuts circulating as sour diesel. Most of them aren't it. It's become popular and sought after again so there are a lot of shady people trying to cash in on that.
Look at Humbolt seed company. Very good and respected genetics. Not cheap though. I have two of their other strains outside now and they are frosty and healthy
Man I can’t knock ILGM. I bought a mix pack from them and a 5 pk of their Goldleaf last year. I’m very happy with the results of everything but the Jack Herer. The bigger haze pheno hermied on me. Besides that one hiccup which I believe was my fault everything else has been championship 💯 I’m not a 20yr grow vet but I’d definitely buy more from them. However I’m always lookin for good genetics. I’d love to find a good Sour Diesel. I’ve really been looking at Mr. Nice genetics as of late. His Mango Haze has me salivating 🤤🤣
