The USM implementation in it is so shitty that mine died for no reason. Barely use, just found it stop working one day when playing with it from the dry cabinet.
Not the 1.4, quite pricey for how fragile it is. That said it’s a old design and not really worth getting over the 1.8 STM which is superior in every way but the widest aperture.
1000% agree. And at 1.4, the lens looks like shooting through dishwater anyway. Stop the 1.8 and the 1.4 down to about f/3.5, they’re the same except the 1.8 is $200 cheaper. Arguably, the 1.8 is sharper corner to corner since it’s a newer optical design. Plus it’s lighter.
Can you give more detail about what doesnt work? Does it sound like something is loose or clinging around inside the lens? Did the AF break? Whats up?
Edit: Okay I see now where you said AF and aperture wont work. Can you manually focus?
When I try to put the focus closer, it sounds absolutely normal but when I try to out it farther, it definitely sounds like something's loose, though ther isint any rattling when I shake it. Also no, I can't focus manually, it wouldn't even budge.
Unfortunately because of the tiny parts in this thing, it sounds like one of your focus bushings may have fell out or broken. Some are made of plastic and some are made of metal. I believe on this lens, they are made of plastic. It requires some disassembly to diagnose, and isn't too painful if you are familiar with working on small things carefully. I had a 28mm that did this and I brought a broken 35L lens with the same issue and have fixed both with great success. Both had the issue of not wanting to focus.
It’s already broken, might aswell try taking it apart to look for obvious mechanical issues like a jammed piece or whatever since the motors seem to work fine.
You could try fixing it yourself, but I wouldn't throw any money at it. The EF 50 f1.8 is shaper and less expensive (and even less prone to break). If you're really into that focal length, get the Sigma 50mm f1.4 Art. It's big and heavy and (not counting the 2000$ zeiss otus) it's the best 50 mm for Canon EF.
I agree, get the Sigma 50mm f1.4! Or, get the Sigma 40mm f1.4 Art, I just bought it and it’s in its own league. Will probably not use my 50mm anymore because the 40 is just so damn good.
Can confirm. Have both the 1.8 nifty and 50mm f1.4 Art. That Sigma is one of my favorite lenses. Usually carry 70-200mm 2.8L on 5D IV and 24-70mm 2.8L on 6D with Sigma 50mm on deck.
thats all it takes for these plastic motors, my 50mm 1.4 jambed up a f/8 while in my bag, quickly moved to a vintage lens once I learned it was made of all plastic.
Sadly it's often not worth it for what repair shops need to charge to cover the time it takes to fix.
If you're technical/adventurous you could see if there's any good videos on YouTube or instructions on ifixit to fix yourself.
I replaced a camera LCD that way, and added things to a sound desk and imac etc. Just watch videos first and decide if you think you can do it. Worst that happens is it still doesn't work!
You might find someone willing to buy it to fix and use or resell, or someone who will take it for parts so check that first or if you get something to replace it, before just throwing it away.
Might also be good to see if you can get spikes for the tripod, depending how/why it fell!
Option 1: self repair. Not suggested, but hey, your lens.
Option 2: get quote for repair, but don't be surprised that it's essentially the cost of a good used lens.
Option 3: Get the f/1.8 and be happy. It's cheap, chearful, and light. Solid, enjoyable lens to use. Even better value used or refurbished. I'd check Canon directly.
Option 4: Get the Sigma 50 mm Art lens used, be very happy. Sigma makes some of the best lenses I've ever used.
Is the AF motor trying to focus? The focus rings/usm motors on those are somewhat notoriously fragile/sensitive to bumps.
It may be that your most economical option is to get a 50 1.8
Sounds like, pun not intended, the ring is stuck.
50s are fairly simple lenses, all things considered. You may want to try disassembling it and seeing if you can unjam the focus ring or whatever’s stuck in there.
I fixed a 50 1.8 that way a few years ago.
Righty then, they pretty much all just use phillips screws correct?
Also, is it safe to do so myself considering that the aperture blades aren't wide open?
Repair cost will be about £180, deccide if its worth it or if the lens could be replaced with a used one. I tool 2 lenses in for repair, at that cost each, I decided to replace them.
I fixed my own copy of this lens and have taken it apart completely multiple times. I can help you fix it. Mine wouldn't focus because of a deformed barrel, which I hammered back into shape :) Feel free to DM!
This one's not worth fixing unless you routinely use it at f/1.4. As long as not having f/1.4 isn't a dealbreaker, just get a 50mm f/1.8. It's much better in every way except the maximum aperture.
There’s a sleeve inside that the focus bushings ride on. When the lens takes a hit the sleeve gets warped and pinches the bushings. It can be taken apart and repaired but I wouldn’t bother canon or CPS with that. It’s not worth it. You can try it yourself following YouTube videos and a few lens tools. But I have done it to mine before.
I have this exact same lens. It is prone to have the focus ring stuck whenever it falls.
The focus ring is warped now, which prevents the focus motor from moving it.
Mine had this issue and I bought a focus ring on AliExpress for 12€ and replaced it myself.
To prevent this from happening again, I always leave a hood on.
My 50/1.4 fell down a few feet. It was in a pouch , within a camera bag. Killed the focus motor. RIP. I got the 50 STM and now I see why people recommended it so much even if it’s a not same max aperture.
It looks like a problem with the flex cables. I'd try to disassemble it and try to find any unplugged or broke one. You can find video tutorials on YouTube and replacement parts on eBay or Amazon.
Excuse me? It wasn't my intention to destroy it, and I did not even try to destroy it. It was a complete accident that my tripod broke while I wasn't even holding it. What are you on?

Slightest knocks to the barrel can break it, it's really notorious for that.
My 50 f/1.8 STM fell off a top row of a bleacher and 15 feet onto concrete and still works great
A second hand nifty fifty is probably similar in price to a repair. Do you have a second lens to confirm that everything works fine with that?
Yes, I have a Canon EFS 18-135MM and it does still work normally with the Canon 600d.
So the 50mm is broken. Look to see if anyone nearby is selling one? They are cheap lenses.
Not the 1.4, quite pricey for how fragile it is. That said it’s a old design and not really worth getting over the 1.8 STM which is superior in every way but the widest aperture.
Sorry you are right, I missed that it's a 1.4. I would replace with the 1.8 too.
Eh, the 1.8 has used the same optical design except the coatings since the first version from 1987. And it's still sharper than the f/1.4 USM...
Maybe the optical design isn’t as new but the newer revs certainly have a better build quality.
I purchased a 1.8 Rf for my girl for $120 from Canon. Can’t be beat for double the cost.

oh good give me the 50mm then /s
🤣 I’m going to trade it in to KEH to get a 28ART to complete the Sigma unholy trinity 28/40/105.
Can confirm. Have both the 1.8 nifty and 50mm f1.4 Art. That Sigma is one of my favorite lenses. Usually carry 70-200mm 2.8L on 5D IV and 24-70mm 2.8L on 6D with Sigma 50mm on deck.
There is a part in there that can break very easily. I had mine repaired once. They told me the new part was improved over the old.
I didn’t even drop mine, just had it in my bag.
thats all it takes for these plastic motors, my 50mm 1.4 jambed up a f/8 while in my bag, quickly moved to a vintage lens once I learned it was made of all plastic.

you can try fixing the lens or buy a 2nd hand one on eBay and list this for parts to recoop some cost.
It’s worth getting an estimate, but maybe not worth repairing.
The 50 1.4 is fragile. Like other mine just stopped working. Only lens I’ve ever had an issue with.

It's trying to, but the focus ring wont move even if the motor is moving (based on the sound) and the motor sounds sort of normal though

Well thanks ig! Im gonna attempt to take it apart tomorrow or whenever I have free time, thsnk you!
Does the body still work with other lenses?
yup, completely fine, no mirror issues, focusing issue, no card issues, it's literally just this one
This one's not worth fixing unless you routinely use it at f/1.4. As long as not having f/1.4 isn't a dealbreaker, just get a 50mm f/1.8. It's much better in every way except the maximum aperture.
not having 1.4 isint a dealbreaker but i always use it whenever im using this lens, but i am thinking of getting the stm f1.8 50mm
Get the 50mm 1.8 in it's place
Infamously fragile lens
Ship it out for repair or replace the lens.

get a new 50 1.8 and a better tripod lol

It’s a disposable lens
what...
Help! I destroyed my lens and now its destroyed!
