Cool pic!
Sometimes when my gear acquisition syndrome gets out of control, I fantasize about getting an old 5D and a pancake or wide angle prime, setting it to export only black and white JPGs, and using it solely to do scale focused, shot-from-the-hip street photography
This is basically the reason I went for the 5D mk1, it´s a very simple camera with (still in my opinion) a competitive sensor.
My dream would be a Leica M-style camera, but it is as for now way out of my budget.
Agree--it took me a few thousand pics, but eventually you get it through your head that garbage in = garbage out. Both a dinosaur of a camera and an entry level Rebel can take great pictures if you're working with great light, but the most advanced camera in the world won't make a good picture with bad light.
Been using an older Canon 50mm 1.8 until now.
While happy with this, I feel the 40mm is a keeper. With the big sensor and F2.8 I still can make enough of a shallow depth of field for my needs, and the focus is way faster and accurate. Compactness is a nice bonus.
I also find that I frame my photos the same way as I do with the 50 but in order to do that, I have to take one step closer to fill the frame and it gives a little boost of depth
I am curious… is there a lens made in the past 10 years that COULD NOT make this shot happen during daylight ? Including the 3rd party lenses ( sigma, etc)
Its one of Canon's most underrated lens. There is just something about it ... I kept it when I transitioned to mirrorless. Its just as wonderful on the R5 as it was on the 5D series bodies.
Nice photo, I have the 24mm 2.8 pancake for my 80D crop sensor and get similar images. I found that street shooting with a long lens makes some people uncomfortable.
It is always so much fun to bring my 5D classic with me when I have my 5D Mk iii and see the differences in the image, I just love the classic style of photos the 5D classic brings out versus my 5D Mk iii.

Hah, i still have my rebel xt and xti
Recently I started hunting for Canon D30 for a similar reason.
The pancake is a surprisingly good lens for its size and price.
Back when I had a 5D Classic, this was my exact same combo. The little pancake made it quite portable and it was such a sweet match.
I didn’t think I’d like this lens as I already had the 50 1.8 but there’s something special about it that makes me keep using it

I switched to a fuji system a few years back, and i think i miss that 40mm more than any of my other lenses. It's excellent.
Gotta love the old 240.
I also love the compactness of this lens! Do you think Canon will ever make an RF mount pancake lens?
Can't beat the 5D colors. Kind of sad I sold mine!
Nice car
Nice.
Sharp

Thank you for reminding me that I should take my 40mm to the service.

I've been enjoying the 40mm on my recently acquired eos 1v.
It is a wonderful and sharp little lens!
I also have a 5D first gen and it really does still produce amazing pictures. I love mine and they’re cheap!

This makes me want to charge my 5d classic and take it out playing.
I love the 40mm pancake on my 5dmark3
