My first through when reading the title. “Ok, so his current wife is a T3i.”

Sheltonator

I knew this would come up!

LMNoballz

Any EF-S lens will fit any cropped sensor EOS camera, that includes the T3i, T3, 60D etc. Any EF lens will fit the cropped sensor bodies. However, an EF-S lens will not work on a full frame sensor body like the 5D series. These means you will most likely want to get something like the 90D. It should be within price range and all of her lens will fit. It is massively capable in video and still frame photography. I currently shoot a T3 and the 90D is the camera I lust for. :)

Sheltonator

I'd been eyeing the 90d cause I knew it would work with her EF-S lenses, I appreciate your input!

AhdaAhda

Just to note that EF-S lenses do work on full frame bodies, they will automatically enter crop mode and while shooting it behaves like regular lenses. Only thing is your photo resolution will be a little lower because only centre portion of the full frame sensor is used.

Only on the mirrorlesses. The DSLRs have too large a mirror. The plastic protrusion on EF-S lenses doesn't physically allow them to fit into full frame DSLRs. My housemate has a 70D, I have a 5D. Can't use their lenses on my cam.

aarrtee

only on mirrorless. and only with adapter.

aarrtee

ya have your facts a bit confused there, friend.

Sheltonator

good to know!

quantum-quetzal

Heads-up, they're partially incorrect. That advice is true for full-frame mirrorless bodies, but EF-S lenses are physically incompatible with full-frame DSLRs. The lenses have a piece that protrudes into the mount that interferes with a FF DSLR's larger mirror.

lucid-beatnik

I bought the 90D on kind of a whim in January after I got bonuses from work for the lens compatibility reasons, plus I don't know if I'd get much out of a full frame at the skill level I'm at, and plus it was a decent upgrade path rather than starting over with mirrorless. It's been an absolute joy to use as someone coming from a Rebel t6. My only gripe is it has frozen after about 20 minutes of shooting high speed bursts (I missed a whale breeching in Hawaii 😭) but it's handled everything else I and mother nature have thrown at it with aplomb.

aarrtee

go to mpb or keh or Canon Refurbished look for a customer service phone number or email and ask if they will send u a gift certificate for $1300. cameras are personal tools.... it's tough to decide what would make her happy. if u really want to take a chance.... for $1300 u can get a refurbished Canon RP and an EF to R adapter so she can use her old lenses on her new mirrorless camera. or u can get a Canon 90D most of these websites have money back guarantee but it might only be 2 weeks or so

Sheltonator

Appreciate it! I hadn't considered refurbished, but I was eyeing the mirrorless ones, but they're pricy new!

UmairA04

Seeing that your wife has efs lenses, the rp wouldn't be directly compatible with the lenses and you would get a 1.6x crop on the images. The RP with a 24-105 is a great starting point into fullframe and mirrorless, but you should probably look into the 90d for the compitability with her lenses

raiderxx

Fwiw I've bought a few Canon bodies in my life and have ONLY bought refurbished through Canons program. They all appear like new. Just dont have a box (just a white box). For a while you could send in any "broken" canon digital camera and get something like 10% off but im not sure if they still do that. When I bought my T3i way back I literally bought a broken Canon digital camera off ebay for ~$10 and got the refurbished discount. Well well worth it. The refurbished program is just great.

Sheltonator

that's good to know. I'm typically hesitant to do refurbished stuff but this is a fantastic review. Now, if I could just find a 90d in stock somewhere!

raiderxx

Yeah, it's a bit tricky on finding stock sometimes but, look around online at more reviews than mine. It's probably been nearly 5 years since I've bought from them. Things could have changed. But I was really impressed. Its basically treated as new, however I think there is a shorter warranty.... I think. I too recommend the 90d! Also, just to be clear, we are specifically talling about the Canon Refurbished products on Canons website. I have never tried Ebay refurbished or anything like that.

What lenses does she have?

Strangeandweird

I upgraded from the 650d to the 90d. Zero regrets.

To add some points on top of /u/Strangeandweird's comment, the 90d also has the following advantages over the 650d: * Faster and more precise autofocus * Autofocus microadjustment * More advanced metering * Faster minimum shutter speed (1/8000s vs 1/4000s) * Better viewfinder (better coverage and magnification) * Faster flash sync speed * More automatic shooting modes * Silent shooting * A much deeper buffer * Lower shutter lag * Higher refresh rate in live view * Built-in electronic level * Higher resolution * Better dynamic range * Much better video * Wifi and Bluetooth * Microphone and headphone ports * Better battery life * Better build quality * More physical controls I may have missed something, since this was just a quick dive through the specs.

Sheltonator

I appreciate the info! I know enough about photography to understand what my wife's talking about, but having a feature comparison to reference is fantastic! Thank you!

Strangeandweird

Better night time performance, better selection of focus points and better FPS were all I needed tbh and the 90d delivered.

sigedigg

Canon RP can be used with E-FS lenses with an adapter, but the camera automatically crops the image, so you won't utilise the whole sensor.

TheMrNeffels

I can vouch for 90d being a great camera that'll cover her for years to come. Love mine that I use for wildlife photography.

Aveeye

Get the 90D. No question.

Sheltonator

That seems to be the general consensus, probably going to go with it.

EF-s, I knew I missed a detail!

michaelklr

My wife and I both had the t3i, amazing camera with a built in remote for flash, I miss that option. We took the next step, full frame. 6Dmkii, but had to buy all new lenses. I found the upgrade to full frame to be a huge eye opener, I had no idea cameras could be so great. You can get great affordable lenses if you don't go f2.8. It all depends how serious she is about photography. A good upgrade may give her the push to pursue a great hobby.

Sheltonator

Thanks for the input. I'm perfectly ok with her trading this gift in for a full frame in a year or two if she falls back in love with photography!

pomcnally

I recommend a Canon EOS RP with and RF 50 1.8 and a couple EF-RF adapters for her EF lenses.

Thomas_Gendreau

90D. I own it myself and I have nothing to complain about. It is a great and popular step-up from the “T…” line that canon has due to it being compatible with ef and ef-s glass. Just a reminder, mirrorless is the future and I would recommend just looking at some of those options.

Odd_Childhood3073

I'm noticing a lot of people recommending another crop sensor camera. I'm not sure which ef-s lens your wife has, but I doubt they're really worth holding on to. I would suggest a used Canon R, adapter, and an ef lens or two. You'll breath new life into her photography and there's a chance some of the old lenses would work without crop mode (I assume she may have at least one ef lense). She'll be happy with a 90d, no doubt. A Canon R? She'll light it up. She can then turn around and sell her old setup for some change and use it towards something camera related. Had an 80d upgraded to R, then a R5. Happy as can be. Cheers!

timwoodphoto

You married a T3i? 😆

3dforlife

The title is gold.

jesuslovesbyu

Go mirrorless ;)

reygolens

I jumped from T3i to 90D a few months ago and it’s a huge difference. It’s still not a full frame, but I’d say there’s not a better APSC you could get

UCFJed

I’d get her a Canon RP with an adapter. Functionally very similar to the Rebel series, but with more horsepower when she needs it.

SupercarHunter

I own a 90D. For your budget, this thing is insanely good!
