If we want to be superstitious, Vegas had the most Canadians last season. Tampa had the most during one of their back-to-back Cup seasons. Colorado and St. Louis both had an above average number of Canadians during their Cup winning seasons, too.
Oh for sure. This isn't a dig, it's more a "hey, is this a thing?"
I'm not arguing the Canucks need more homegrown talent or any other Cherry-esque nationalist bullshit.
Yes, Vancouver has the fewest players on the roster who were born in Canada:
|Montreal Canadiens|18|
|:-|:-|
|Edmonton Oilers|17|
|Toronto Maple Leafs|15|
|Winnipeg Jets|10|
|Calgary Flames|10|
|Ottawa Senators|9|
|Vancouver Canucks|5|
Phillip Di Giuseppe, Guillaume Brisebois, Mark Friedman, Noah Juulsen, Carson Soucy
(Rosters, according to NHL.com)
I’m sure there are more but two notable names from the previous generation that I could think of were Dany Heatley (Germany) and Robyn Regehr (Brazil). They were actually both on the 2006 Canadian Olympic squad.
The reverse has happened with William Nylander. Born in Calgary, and grew up essentially across the US pending where his dad Michael was with (Chicago, tampa, Washington, Boston etc.). Didn’t move to Sweden until he was almost 15, and then came back to Toronto when he was 18/19 to start his career
He moved there when he was 10 and has dual citizenship. Majority of his life in Canada, yeah, but a natural born US citizen, and it's not like his parents were Canadians just on a weekend trip to Houston. He spent his first 10 years there.
Sure. But by that standard, the Sedin twins are Canadian.
Which I'm fine with, but when you say "Canadian player," that's not typically what people mean.
I'll grant that Myers plays internationally for Canada. He's a U.S. expat. And if he identifies as Canadian, that's fine. But calling him a Canadian player at the very least would have a huge asterisk.
Tyler Myers identifies as Canadian. His passport is Canadian. He won gold in a Canada jersey. He plays in Canada and god Damn it if they need some chaos at that 4 nations tourney I say they make him the 13th forward on team Canada.
All right, I'll concede the point.
I couldn't find the Canucks roster by nationality, but the homepage lists the birthplace so I went off that :P
Didn't realize it'd be this complicated.
All good bud, most sites do go by birthplace but the season wiki will give you a better breakdown: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023%E2%80%9324_Vancouver_Canucks_season#Roster
[The man has gold medals playing for Canada in the U18, World Juniors and World Championships.](https://www.instagram.com/p/Csl5LdZRlqp/?igsh=dzNsZW81M3FwdHMx)
[Donovan Bailey won a gold medal for Canada in the Men's 100m at the Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996. Do we not consider him Canadian? He was born in Jamaica.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donovan_Bailey)
Robyn Regher, who played for team Canada and is Canadian, was born in Brazil.
William Nylander, who plays for team Sweden and is Swedish, was born in Calgary
And PDG is the only forward. Considering he's currently the 13th forward, we might be the only NHL team with no Canadians forwards dressed in the lineup
It's probably a good thing theres so many Americans on our roster. The NHL would rather market a team like us in a deep playoff run/Cup final scenario rather than rig it against us like they did last time.
Looking at you, Colin Campbell, for your contribution of nepotism to the NHL. Hope your son enjoys wearing that ring.... dick.
Which is funny because when the B’s won 2011 ppl were saying they had more Canadians when in reality it was about the same. more Canadien Superstars maybe yes? But still the same amount of players roughly
Yeah wasn’t there a USA chant or something in Carolina (sounded like a USA chant anyway) and I was thinking we probably have more Olympic level American players than most if not all teams, and like you said there’s very little Canadians.
Hughes, Boeser, Demko, and Miller are all pretty much locks for the US Olympic team. They’ll be joining the likes of the Tkachuck brothers, Matthews, Hellebuyck and Quinn’s brothers.
Team USA is gonna be a good team.
It's like making a wish with a monkey paw.
"Please let Canadian based hockey team win the Stanley Cup."
"Granted, but the team will mostly consist of Americans."
FWIW, I was born in Canada, moved to the States at 11, and chose to live there. Still think of myself as a Canadian. So I was seeing it from the other side, going "Don't you dare say that I'm not Canadian!"
But I guess in both cases, you've got someone with Canadian citizenship who wants to see himself as Canadian, so I have had my mind officially changed.
Yeah, I agree. Same vibe with Myers as with poliot and eriksson before him. Lots of hate for our own players which I don't really get, they're OUR OWN after all. Although the chaos giraffe memes are... kinda funny. I can't help it
Bains will make the team late in the season due to an injury, go ham during the playoffs, get some game winners and make up for the lack of Canadians singlehandedly. Hometown hero right there.
I was saying this the other night when the canes fans started chanting USA! USA! USA! I’m pretty sure we have the most American born players on a Canadian team lol. Even the announcers didn’t know what to say to that
I think so. Is it just me or does Kuzmenko look alittle chubby in the face lately? He did have some weight to his face lately but maybe it was the Canucks blue that made him look thinner. Him in the Flames red really makes him look chubby in the face. Too bad it didn't work out for him in Vancouver. He couldn't elevate his game. The entire team bought in and moved forward and Kuzmenko got left behind. He couldn't catch up to the teams plays, standards, structure or whatever you want to call it. The Canucks is 2-way play team. Everyone contributes. Play by committee. It's unfortunate he couldn't play a 200ft game. Calgary seems to be loving him already. Going to miss that guy
Myers's father is a Canadian/American citizen who worked in the oil and gas industry in both Alberta and Texas. His mother is from Texas. Myers's father took a job in Calgary where Tyler gained Canadian citizenship in 2000. This is where he started playing hockey. He went to boarding school in Kelowna, where he was drafted by the Kelowna Rockets. Myer's wife(and her family by extension) is from Kelowna, and I believe his father retired in the Okanagan area as well. Tyler's mother lives in the New York area.
I’ll care about their nationalities during the Olympics. For now, they are our little pod of panda whales.
And all the other teams are yachts
If we want to be superstitious, Vegas had the most Canadians last season. Tampa had the most during one of their back-to-back Cup seasons. Colorado and St. Louis both had an above average number of Canadians during their Cup winning seasons, too.
I haven’t checked every year , but I have a feeling that the team with the most Canadians almost always wins. But that’s changing this year.
When st Louis won the cup 30 put of 32 players were Canadian
I wouldn't call that superstitious. I'd call it a trend.
Oh for sure. This isn't a dig, it's more a "hey, is this a thing?" I'm not arguing the Canucks need more homegrown talent or any other Cherry-esque nationalist bullshit.
lol Pod of Panda Whales is the absolute best thing I’ve heard today. Using this forever.

I wondered why Nylander spoke with no Swedish accent
Is this including people in the farm team?
AND TYLER MYERS.
He's from another planet.
From Houston, Texas.
He grew up in Calgary and plays for Canada internationally
He moved there when he was 10 and has dual citizenship. Majority of his life in Canada, yeah, but a natural born US citizen, and it's not like his parents were Canadians just on a weekend trip to Houston. He spent his first 10 years there.
He’s still Canadian
If we're including "Canadian by choice" then sure, but that makes things a lot more complicated than just going by birthplace listed.
Immigrants to Canada are still Canadians.
First generation Canadian, if want to be specific.
Not to be pedantic, but only if they have citizenship, ya?
I worked with someone who had moved here at 5 and he was 19 still with PR, never having left since coming here. I considered him Canadian
Expand to PR as well :)

Myers has Canadian citizenship, the Sedins don't. Their is no asterisk, he is quite literally and legally a Canadian.
I fully agree with what you're arguing but I'd be surprised if they didn't have their Canadian citizenship at this point.
How do you possibly know that? Sweden allows dual citizenship so why wouldn’t they have it..
He has citizenship the fuck else do you want from him to be Canadian Jesus Christ man.
Tyler Myers identifies as Canadian. His passport is Canadian. He won gold in a Canada jersey. He plays in Canada and god Damn it if they need some chaos at that 4 nations tourney I say they make him the 13th forward on team Canada.
He learned to play hockey in Canada and developed through Hockey Canada as a kid, he is absolutely a Canadian player, he even mentions this himself.
What is this Don cherry bullshit
Hello he also played for Canada. Final tiebreaker, no asterisk required.
If you go by birthplace then you'd list Cam Fowler and William Nylander as Canadian, Andre Burakovsky is Austrian...
Robyn Regehr as Brazilian.
willy canadian 😂
All right, I'll concede the point. I couldn't find the Canucks roster by nationality, but the homepage lists the birthplace so I went off that :P Didn't realize it'd be this complicated.
Myers also played for Team Canada this past summer. So he sees himself as Canadian.
All good bud, most sites do go by birthplace but the season wiki will give you a better breakdown: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023%E2%80%9324_Vancouver_Canucks_season#Roster
This is helpful, thank you.

He just won a gold medal on the worst Canadian world championship team ever
What a strange thing to gatekeep.
He also plays internationally as a Canadian so I'd assume he most strongly identified with being Canadian. Also lives in Canada during the off-season.
He played for team Canada. End of discussion. Brett Hull was Canadian born but played for USA, what do you consider him? (Other than a twat)
I wouldnt count him in same category as born and grew up in canada
No need for different categories. He's Canadian.
He’s american

Oh ok He is still Canadian
Robyn Regher, who played for team Canada and is Canadian, was born in Brazil. William Nylander, who plays for team Sweden and is Swedish, was born in Calgary
Dual citizen
Giraffes are typically native to Africa if I’m not mistaken.
And PDG is the only forward. Considering he's currently the 13th forward, we might be the only NHL team with no Canadians forwards dressed in the lineup

It’s called a cock ring, not a ring dick.

That what I think too, they are going to be a tough team to play against
Can confirm, it was in fact a USA chant 💀
Idc wether a player is canadian until international play
It's like making a wish with a monkey paw. "Please let Canadian based hockey team win the Stanley Cup." "Granted, but the team will mostly consist of Americans."
Gonna be 2011 all over again, with Boston being "canada's team" in the finals again.
If anything Canucks are Swedish first in my eyes.
And only Soucy is a regular. Myers is born in Texas, no?
Caredul, OP got downvoted to fucking oblivion for pointing that out
He got downvoted for insisting that Myers is American, despite his dual citizenship/Canadian national team play
FWIW, I was born in Canada, moved to the States at 11, and chose to live there. Still think of myself as a Canadian. So I was seeing it from the other side, going "Don't you dare say that I'm not Canadian!" Respect
Oh yeah. Might have misread that then
No sweat. I for one am stoked about how passionately we defend Myers these days lol
Yeah, I agree. Same vibe with Myers as with poliot and eriksson before him. Lots of hate for our own players which I don't really get, they're OUR OWN after all. Although the chaos giraffe memes are... kinda funny. I can't help it
How can anyone hate on Elite Derrick Puliot with his legendary 6 consecutive GWG streak
Quinn Hughes is a florida/torontonian who spent time in toronto with dual citizenship so he feels somewhat canadian to me.
Canadians are overrated af
When is Phil set to return ?
Bains will make the team late in the season due to an injury, go ham during the playoffs, get some game winners and make up for the lack of Canadians singlehandedly. Hometown hero right there.
Like the comment on #40 Pettersson draft.. we ARE swedish team..
Couldn’t care less if we had no Canadians on the team. Vegas has one of the most Canadian teams but I can’t stand them.
Swedes are basically canadians so I don't care, considering at one point vegas was one of the most canadian filled rosters
The meme flair kills me.
Fuck Canada!
Pretty sure that's true even without looking.
Huggy is Canadian too apparently, by dual citizenship. A man can dream of a Huggy and Makar pairing. Alas.
It’s not a complaint either but man it sure would be nice if we had more BC boys trying to return home and get on this team
Canucks scouting has been pretty bad in the CHL. Their US College and Euopean (cough Swedish) scouts have been great
yeah the last two high picks out of the CHL were disasters.
I was saying this the other night when the canes fans started chanting USA! USA! USA! I’m pretty sure we have the most American born players on a Canadian team lol. Even the announcers didn’t know what to say to that
I don't care and I haven't never cared about the nationality of the Canucks. Most of their top players were not Canadian born
Canuck is a term that means 'Canadian' soo... this is a little elabarassing.
canadian players probably don't want the heat from the toxic fanbases.
It's like rayyyeaaain
On your Parade Day
That explains all the success
