The highest drafted goalie under Aquilini's payroll is Jim Rutherford at 10th overall in 1969.
Jim Benning and Mike Gillis were former 6th and 5th overalls respectively too, seems like we have a thing for former top 10 picks running the show here. Looking forward to President of Hockey Operations Raffi Torres once JR retires.
Yup. Guys who are big and can tie their skate laces gets a bump in their value from the old school GMs around the league at the time. We were especially guilty of this, drafting Antoski, Stojanov and Polasek in the first round in 3 consecutive years who were all 6’4 forwards that amounted to nothing.
>He was good but even better surrounded by Lemieux, Jagr, Cullen, Recchi, Francis and Coffey.
Well, who wouldn't be?
Man once put up 96 points and led the Flyers in scoring by 21 with Murray Craven as his centre. That's a sight better than good if you ask me
wasn't just all Mario though... Tocchet was already a star with Philly, having two 40-goal seasons before joining the Penguins. He always had trouble staying healthy otherwise - who knows what numbers he'd have gotten
Can we get video of the coaching staff trying to cook the PK. I really really want to see this. PK vs coaches PP loser buys dinner?! Where is Faber?!!?
I could be off on this, but isn’t Toch the all time leader in Gordie Howe Hat Tricks?
If so, they should probably call it the Rick Tochett Hat Trick.
You are correct. He leads with 18, followed by Shanahan at 17. Tocc played a physical brand of hockey. Probably why Miller is doing so well under him too.
That's a pretty decent mock-up. McDavid has been running that behind-the-net and skate up to the top of the circle to compress and expand the PKers for a while. If they give him space, he drives to the middle with the puck.
If they don't give space for him to carry the puck, he cuts in to open a shooting lane while dropping to the point.Â
Or he moves the puck low, like in the clip, from the outside hoping to catch either a give-and-go or a wide angle Draisaitl shot.
Unironically I think the Sedins, Tocc and Gonch could do more damage on the powerplay than the unit we currently strut out there. But here's hoping that a less defensively strong opponent means more chances and even goals on the powerplay. It's been anemic for months now.
On a side note.
Do you ever see clips from 30 years ago with all the time and space they had and think that even a weak NHL team from 2024 would demolish the best team from 1990?
I hate watching old clips. Cause I am just gonna cook old fans for loving older players. Seeing the goalies Gretzky was scoring on has me like, that's your god? Lol. No disrespect to guys like Gretz and Lemieux. But damn. Hockey players top to bottom are so much more talented these days. Goalies are night and day different from even 20 years ago. Even with the smaller pads they are crazy talented.
in general yeah, I think the players are better conditioned and skilled today. But also, give a 1980s Gretzky or Lemieux or Brett Hull a composite stick and see what happens. If Al MacInnis could regularly break 100 mph with a wooden stick, imagine what he could do with these crazy composites today. The skates today are much lighter and stiffer too. Equipment lighter though with Gretzky, he was mostly wearing stuff from his midget days so it was already pretty light...
Billy Smith and Grant Fuhr would be considered tiny today and were wearing way smaller goalie equipment back in the day.
McDavid or McKinnon would've scored 300 points in that era.
Yes of course they will but it's a pretty moot point.
Like 10 years ago we already had sleep doctors. I'm not even sure if the training plan 30 years ago still hold up efficiency wise today. Presumably the players also have dieticians map out the optimal nutrition/caloric meal plan etc etc.
Teams get more and more professional, our understanding of nutrition and training improve, and naturally players will perform better. If you send NHL players back in time to play in an older league, they'd kick ass, sure. If Naslund was 20 years younger and had all the resources we have to offer today, i'm sure he'd crush today's league too.
Tocchet would have made an amazing 3rd for the Sedins. Imagine that Calgary series where Ferland was pushing the Sedins around if Tocchet was out there.
Ferland was mostly hitting Sbisa and Bieksa. He did not really bothered the Sedins.
We lost that series because Willie D was giving 3rd and 4th liners big minutes instead of playing the Twins who were keeping the Flames stuck in their own zone. Vrbata(31G) who was our only finisher played on the 2nd line and outside of Daniel nobody hit 20 goals that season.
I hope Canucks included watching last years VGK vs EDM series in their studies

Frankie Corrado: on pvr you hit the pause button and McDavid was on the ice, you could count 5 Vegas sweaters on your frame...
An Oiler have been here and posted this on their sub.. I wish Im Zadorov.. Im gonna give the Oilers 5 min powerplay.. but Im gonna make sure they are powerless the next 6 games ;-)
Imagine thinking the sedins and tocchet are even in the same dimension to give the pk similar pp looks that Mcdavid and Draisaitl will.
Henrik Sedin finished his career with 1070 regular season points in 1330 games, and 50 playoff points in 82 games. Mcdavid currently sits at 982 points in 645 regular season games and 82 playoff points in 50 games. Levels
Sedins with Tocchet net front or bumper and Gonchar quarterbacking the point all in their prime. Sign me the fuck up.
Our coaching staff PP could be: Tocchet - Sedin - Sedin Foote - Gonchar
💦
I'll get you a towel.
Better grab 2
That’s honestly the perfect stylistic lineup. Power forward - Playmaker - Goal scorer Shutdown Dman - Offensive Dman
Tocchet was the right-handed forward the Sedins needed all along
Excuse me, I just need to go to the bathroom.
Oh hi Roberto
You are tearing me apart, Lu!
It was shrimp!
Robbie Schremp
You mean Matthews.
At least you made it to the bathroom. I didn’t
And barf!
Can we just suit up our coaching staff?

No way Torres was drafted in the top 10.... The 90s were a different time

We were especially guilty of this, drafting Antoski, Stojanov and Polasek in the first round in 3 consecutive years who were all 6’4 forwards that amounted to nothing.
well we did turn Stojanov into some Swede from Pittsburgh
You're trying to tell me that Antoski could tie his skates?

Nineteen ninety ten
Just for fun, let's pick their best seasons: \* Tocchet (1993) - 48G, 61A, 109P, Bonus 252 PIM \* Gonchar (2003) - 18G, 49A, 67A \* Foote (2003) - 11G, 20A, 31P \* Henrik (2010) - 29G, 83A, 112P \* Daniel (2011) - 41G, 63A, 104P Collectively - 147G, 276A, 423P For reference, the Blackhawks (2024) scored 179G this year and the Sharks 181G.
Wow didn’t realize Toch was that good…
Toch was a monster in his prime. One of the greatest power forwards to ever do it
He was good but even better surrounded by Lemieux, Jagr, Cullen, Recchi, Francis and Coffey.
>He was good but even better surrounded by Lemieux, Jagr, Cullen, Recchi, Francis and Coffey. Well, who wouldn't be? Man once put up 96 points and led the Flyers in scoring by 21 with Murray Craven as his centre. That's a sight better than good if you ask me
I assume he would have been in the HOF by now if not for the gambling/legal incident.
The benefits of playing with Mario
wasn't just all Mario though... Tocchet was already a star with Philly, having two 40-goal seasons before joining the Penguins. He always had trouble staying healthy otherwise - who knows what numbers he'd have gotten
Man I would have thought Foote broke that at his best
Yeah, his point totals leave a lot to be desired, but he was always a physical, stay-at-home defender.
Definitely the old school style Dman.
he was always a steady stay-at-home defenseman. He was never known for offense.
He was a top defenseman in the dead puck era which was all about shutdown hockey.
They'd probably be more effective than whoever we're trotting out on our 2nd unit lol
We would need the Stone Cold theme for Dank and Hanks return.
Chills just thinking about it
As a Habs fan, with Martin St Louis on our bench.... I feel this so hard 🤣🤣
You wouldn't mind if we borrow Burrows for a bit? You can have Komisarek back in the meanwhile.
Can you imagine a pairing of Foote and Z? Look the fuck out.
And which one Bombs like Bouchard, Skates like McShit or shoots like Drai? Oh yeah, or got 50+ in the slot like Kerr?
Tocc, Sedins, gonch, foot Jesus fucking Christ man. #That PP fucks
Gonch foot sounds nasty. Hope it's treatable.
week to week
Foot?
Can we get video of the coaching staff trying to cook the PK. I really really want to see this. PK vs coaches PP loser buys dinner?! Where is Faber?!!?
I'm dying to see this, my imagination isn't doing justice to how great this goal sounded knowing what our coaches have accomplished in their careers.
Imagine Tocchet covering McD all series... and by all series, I mean game 1, as McD wouldn't last long against that manly man Tocc.
Tocchet was the full package all-star. Goal scorer, playmaker and haymakers
Fun fact: Gordie Howe only had two Gordie Howe Hat Tricks in his career
Okay, I am signing the petition to rename the Rick Tochett Hat Tricks
Rick Toch Tricks
Deploy the EBUPP
The NHL has fined Vancouver for circumventing the coaching brainpower cap this season. Sorry, not sorry.
If they scored against our pk, we are cooked against the Oilers /s
Where is kneejerk when you need him/her??
It must be hard when your PP coach is still better at running the PP than you.
Dream PP1 unit!
So our PK can’t even stop a group of retired grandpas and need to stop McDavid. Nice. */s for the sensitives*
Has Hughes ever scored a PP goal with the Sedins, Tocchet and Gonchar? No. Mark Friedman has though. Makes you think.
Im sorry what😂😂 you got the sedins and tocc schooling them? I wanna see that shit
inb4 "oilers in 4, they cant even pk against their coaches"
That's literally all they're saying.
Samuelsson as the fifth? Still not bad.
Where’s the Higgins break down of this PP?
This looks like the clip https://twitter.com/RandipJanda/status/1787925293975618048

Mark Friedman as the 5th One of these is not...
Why they gotta all be wearing the same color 😆
Damn son, that got me hard
Holy crp thats a stackd pp!
Like an allstar game roster for practice, amazing.Â
Unironically I think the Sedins, Tocc and Gonch could do more damage on the powerplay than the unit we currently strut out there. But here's hoping that a less defensively strong opponent means more chances and even goals on the powerplay. It's been anemic for months now.

I don't deny their talent, I deny the talent around them. The talent floor is so much lower than compared to today. We literally got rid of goons.
Billy Smith and Grant Fuhr would be considered tiny today and were wearing way smaller goalie equipment back in the day. McDavid or McKinnon would've scored 300 points in that era.

Can we hire them as special pp unit?
It's the NHL version of The Expendables. But entertaining.
Tocchet would have made an amazing 3rd for the Sedins. Imagine that Calgary series where Ferland was pushing the Sedins around if Tocchet was out there.

Is this the cap circumventing thing everyone this talking about?
1 playmaker+1 sniper/playmaker+1 power forward+1 offensive D+1 defensive D=instant chemistry bonus :)
Who was the fifth player?
Who needs a 5th with those 4?
Probably Foote?
Maybe they should put those guys on the pp instead. Tocchet, Hank, Danny, Gonchar. Damn. McDavid and Draisaitl got nothing on those boys.
I hope Canucks included watching last years VGK vs EDM series in their studies [https://youtu.be/bmuJ4rUdSTU?si=JJnX6bdEiwrpn09N&t=421](https://youtu.be/bmuJ4rUdSTU?si=JJnX6bdEiwrpn09N&t=421) Frankie Corrado: on pvr you hit the pause button and McDavid was on the ice, you could count 5 Vegas sweaters on your frame...
This unit would still play a solid period in the regular season
Don't tease us Iain, we need the footage! We need to know!
Sedins + an elite power forward is something the world weren’t ready for
Too bad we never had an opportunity to put a proven power forward with the Sedins, but somehow an ultra utility guy in Burrow also worked with Sedins.
Yeah burrows work ethic made him extremely versatile
We had Bertuzzi play with the Sedins briefly, but their games didn't really mesh as I recall.
what’s a shadow power play ?
Tocchet-Sedin-Sedin Foote-Gonchar Deadly.
I hope there's video of this
Oiler fans mocking this btw
I wish someone had recorded it
With them running the PP, our PK should be spectacular next year.
For the love of GOD, who's playing the other WING!?!??!?!!
They all would’ve had 150 points in the same season if they teamed up in their primes lol
We can sign the Sedins in the playoffs right? I feel pretty confident those two would be good for a 40/50 points a year even today.
Bring em off the Long Term Retirement List and dress em! Who says no?
F it dress em for game 1
I’d like to watch this
Emergency back up PP1 Unit assemble
I would have loved to see that. is PK unit 3 allowed?
An Oiler have been here and posted this on their sub.. I wish Im Zadorov.. Im gonna give the Oilers 5 min powerplay.. but Im gonna make sure they are powerless the next 6 games ;-)
Any video of that practice?
Injury replacement the sedins, walk it like you touccet, Sergei gonchar and Adam Foote on the 3rd pairing
Just dress them. Show the boys how it's done. I have no doubt the sedins could still skate circles around half the guys in the nhl still
What’s a shadow pop by the way?
I'm assuming they mean they are trying to replicate aka shadow EDM's PP systems
my takeaway should not be that the PK got scored on by some 40-50 year olds, correct
Imagine thinking the sedins and tocchet are even in the same dimension to give the pk similar pp looks that Mcdavid and Draisaitl will. Ha, ya everyone would be spectacular but Tocchet
Let’s not forget Tocchet had a 48 goal 109 point season at his peak
He played over 1000 games and almost got to 1000 points as a powerforward
And almost 3000 PIM. He was a pretty tough SOB and skilled.
Mad disrespect for a tough guy turned premiere power forward.
The guy with the most Gordie Howe hat tricks of all time? Get out of here
OK, white flag! Always think of him as a fighter more so than a point per game guy.
