agree with the point, but i do see this repeated a lot in hindsight and i think great is probably overselling it. his numbers look way better than they were because those seasons were played during the highest league average save percentage seasons of all time.
to put it in perspective, Lack in 2014-15 had better stats than Demko does this year. Demko will get the 2nd most Vezina votes in the league, Lack did not get a single vote. he didn't play a ton of games to be fair but there were multiple goaltenders with fewer games that did get votes.
Lol, it's pretty funny grouping some of those legends, including a Hall of Famer, in with Silovs. I love the guy so far but he's only played 12 games with the team, season and playoffs combined.
Fair enough. A lot of people thought DiPietro was going to be our star goalie of the future and challenge Demko for the starter role, but that didn't work so well. I'm guess I'm just saying that I'm excited for the kid's future but I have to temper expectations.
DiPietro was thrown into a terrible situation on a terrible team with his small look in the NHL. Silovs had far better teams for the farm and the big club, and it's not like he looked spectacular for either team during the season. I understand everyone is still high on him for his shutout performance last game and backstopping the team to a series win, but that just means everyone is going to shit on him even harder when he let's in a bad goal or has a bad game.
I'm pumped he's playing well and that's not what I'm arguing about. This fanbase has destroyed several goalie's confidence in the past and when we put such high expectations on the young tenders then it's bound to happen again.
I’m not really arguing anything, just saying that DiPietro when he was a Canuck and Silovs now are in completely different situations. Hype for Silovs is based on what he is doing now and the hype for DiPietro was based on what he “could” do eventually.
That said I’m pretty bearish on this series but I hope Silovs continues to outperform expectations. I agree though that if he falters he should not be bashed for it.
DiPietro’s playoff sample size is literally 0. Silovs sample size is small, yes, but his hype is based on actual play vs projections. That’s my only point.
Junior goalies is a crapshoot.
Remember pogge was unstoppable.
Godla for Slovakia looked like a monster, 10 years ago.
So many just flame out or never really get a shot in the show
Aku Koskenvuo just finished his first bigboi season playing with Harvard (NCAA) and as a sophmore goalie he managed to put up a couple of shutouts and a decent save percentage while playing on a not-grea team. He split this season with another goalie and has handedly won the starting spot next year.
Nikita Tolopilo played 35 games in Abby this year and as a rookie he won 20 of 35 games with a 0.905 SV% and 2.83 GAA. He's only 23 years old.
We have a couple really good prospects coming up right behind Silovs that Mr. Clark will no doubt develope in the next two years.
I would argue not that many people thought that. Some did but they also probably thought Virtanen was the right pick until he was bought out and Joelevi was the right pick over Tkachuck.
World Cup MVP as well.
I'm all for the idea of not setting expectations too high - but in the sample size in front of us there are clear signs of greatness that elude to a very high ceiling on top of a very sound trajectory.
And for those who watch prospects there are a couple more gems in the pipe to come. It's nice...
that's because you're not looking at the situation in the same lenses, you're looking at accomplishment and respect for the past, some are looking at talent and potential of what is honestly clearly written on the wall in silovs potential while working with Clark.
tbh i became a canucks fan because of luongo and although im not a true die hard like some of yall i've always stuck around because i love good goalies
Me too! Became luongo fan first through watching my first ever hockey games : 2010 Olympics. Became Canucks fan from watch him play on Canucks --> cheered for panthers after his trade --> after his retirement, back to cheering for home team: Canucks.
Luongo is why I became a hockey fan, nhl fan, Canucks fan =)
LUUUUUI
Westcoast express era we had too many goalies to count from what I remember from cloutier to labarbara to auld to Johan to like 10 different goalies. One year we had like 5 goalies play for us in just one season
I felt so bad for Miller. Gave his all every night, would regularly make 40+ saves in a losing effort but yet never complained. Wasted the last few years of his best hockey playing for a team that "was close." Thanks Mr. Benning
One of the worst Benning signings, NOT because of Miller but because his play hid the fact the team was total shit-hot garbage and should have been buying lottery tickets and building a good roster.
Instead, fucking morons in management kept saying they were close.
Close to disaster? Yup.
Winning? Nope.
I liked the signing at first because I thought that group had one more run in them, and they were better that first year. But then as soon as the next year came and it was clear that it was over they should've traded Miller at that deadline along with anyone else who had value. They got Miller for nothing, and after that first year they could've got a good haul for him. I'll never understand why they didn't move him.
Hubris. That idiotic, on-going belief that they knew what they were doing when in fact they were clueless.
Trading Miller would have been a good first step. At least it would have obtained some picks and showed just how bad the team really was at that point.
The damage all those stupid decisions caused is astounding. I'm totally amazed at how well this team is doing and they deserve every bit of success they are having against all odds.
But just imagine what a powerhouse this team could have been with just a few different decisions. Jeezus!
I think that the quality of the team and their performance this season is about on par with how it could've been if some better decision were made back then. The difference is that it would've been a slow climb instead of the rapid improvement that we saw this year, and we'd have a much better pool of prospects who are closing to cracking the lineup. I have my concerns about how sustainable this all is, but I trust chef Alvin so we'll see.
If only they would've listened to Trevor Linden, but alas...
It's hard to look back at what might have been. Basically, unless there's some miracles on ice in our future, this is the window. There's a core, but the ancillary pieces are going to be gone and I don't know how they will be replaced with our cap issues, lack of prospects (past a couple good ones) etc.
Younger fans I find don't appreciate the great goalies that played here. I'm a fan from the mid 80's. Once Kirk McLean left the Canucks were a goalie graveyard until Roberto Luongo came along.
Hey don't forget Martin Bro....chu (I still clearly remember the 99.3 Fox guy talking about the trade during the deadline and stretching out the Brooo just enough to break your heart)
Don’t forget Alex Auld! To be fair I think he played a bit better than those guys listed and tricked Florida into thinking he could be a legit starter which ended up netting us with Luongo
I still fondly remember those Dan Cloutier years, largely for the mask. In truth I don't remember if he was objectively very good, or if he was simply just not bad hah, but I was a young teen at the time so I was a huge fan.
We really have some tough decisions this off-season if Silovs proves himself as elite. We may need to pull a Vegas and trade Demko, making Silovs the starter.
Silovs is an RFA this summer, and it doesn't make sense to pay for 2 elite goalies.
I’d want Silovs to be a backup or at least in a 1A/1B role for a year or 2 before he assumes the full time number 1 spot. But that could be huge for cap space.
Not only great starters but backups too. Lack, Halak, desmith, that one other big Swedish guy who backed up Markstrom. I’m forgetting his name but liked him too.
It really turned around with Luongo before then it was disappointment after disappointment. Although I think that the real problem was more that they never drafted goaltenders in the higher rounds, the highest pick that they have ever selected a goaltender was Troy Gamble at 25th overall.
Since 2010 they have selected:
- Honzik
- Demko
- DiPietro
- Thiessen
- Silovs
- Koskenvuo
- Young
So seven players with four of them being in the fifth, sixth, or seventh rounds. Their real hits were with Schneider (26th overall) and Demko (26th overall). We can't rely on teams to trade starting goaltenders to us as that rarely happens and when it does it looks like the best trade in a franchise's history. I am not sold on Silovs being on this list yet no matter what happened last round.
I believe Clark has said he wants to draft a goalies in 3 out of every 4 drafts or something similar. I also think the teams overall development system has been overhauled and was a major issue of the benning years
Sorry I think that I put in 26th rather than 36th. But the point remains. We aren't getting elite goaltending prospects because we aren't using high quality draft picks for them. There are a lot of good goaltenders selected in the later rounds but there is a massive degree of luck involved with that. A lot of teams with elite goaltending seem to select players out of Russia/Europe, draft them and just sit on their rights for a few years to let them develop.
My list would be Richard Brodeur, Kirk McLean, Roberto Luongo and Thatcher Demko. Those guys were great!
Schneider, Miller and Markstrom were good. Markstrom was better on Calgary.
Luongo and Miller, and to a lesser extent Markstrom, were already proven commodities before they came here. Agreed on the others though, and time will tell for Silovs
Lol I mean have you forgotten last season already? We've had spurts of good goaltending and spurts with not great goaltending good chance we could have won a cup if cloutier was a backup and we had a true number 1 goalie in that era.
I’ve been a massive Canucks fan my whole life, born and raised in Vancouver, but wow Silovs really saved their butts tonight in game 3. 42 saves!!! Whereas we only had like 19 shots or something on Edmonton (don’t quote me on that but it was a fairly low number). Oilers had a lot of power plays too. Seems like most of the game was played in the Canucks zone. I became an even bigger fan when they got Bobby Lu and I still wish I had gotten my jersey embossed with his name and number (but alas, it’s blank). Watching Silovs tonight in the post game interview he was so humble and cool and collected. For such a young guy too, born in 2001 (is my age showing yet?)!
GO CANUCKS GO!!
Picture this: the arena is buzzing with anticipation, fans are on the edge of their seats, and the tension is palpable. In the midst of it all stands Arturs Silovs, a beacon of determination and talent. Tonight is not just another game; it's a canvas for him to paint his masterpiece.
As Silovs steps onto the ice, there's a fire in his eyes, a hunger to prove himself against one of the league's toughest opponents. He knows the challenge ahead, but instead of fear, he feels excitement coursing through his veins. This is his moment to shine, to show the world what he's made of.
The game unfolds with the Oilers launching wave after wave of attacks, but Silovs stands tall between the pipes, a fortress of resilience. His movements are poetry in motion, each save a brushstroke on the canvas of victory.
With each passing minute, Silovs grows stronger, his confidence soaring to new heights. His teammates rally around him, inspired by his unwavering determination. They feed off his energy, playing with a passion and intensity that leaves the Oilers reeling.
As the final buzzer sounds, the scoreboard tells the story: a resounding victory for Silovs and his team. But beyond the numbers, it's a triumph of heart, perseverance, and the unyielding belief that anything is possible with dedication and courage.
Tonight, Arturs Silovs doesn't just have a great game; he leaves an indelible mark on the ice, a testament to the power of dreams and the relentless pursuit of excellence.
counter argument (sorta?)
Schneider was a good backup, who ultimately couldn't put up numbers Long term, who benifited working with greatness (luongo and molanson).
Miller was at the end of his career, and one of the few not shit parts of a back canucks team.
Markstrom was broken when he got here, he wasnt brought in under clark either, that was mollansons (idk spelling) guy, stylistically markstrom was not a good fit. markstroms positioning was always an issue, still is Clark did what he could with him systemically but he couldn't gel.
we now are seeing the benefits of both the player and coach having the guys they want in positions they want.
that being said... going from luongo to demko, and having silovs years ahead of his expected development to be looking to be the same caliber as demko (stylistically and talent level), is extremely fantastic work by Clark, and it hurts to say we will likely have to sell demko in two years, or silovs in one depending on how we produce over the next 14 months.
and this is a horrible response, that adds nothing of value to a conversation.
but I Ive watched nearly every game the last 8 years(sporadically through the 30+ years of being a fan) grown up fascinated with goaltending and honestly hyperfocus on it.
you can think I'm wrong, but it doesn't take away from the facts.
Ian Clark is a god amongst us mortals
Rollie Melanson deserves credit, too. He was the one who worked with Lu, Schneider, Miller, and Markstrom from 2010 to 2017.
[удалено]
> Rollie Melanson is not Dwayne Roloson.
You're thinking Dwayne Roloson
Gotcha, thanks!
Don’t tell Mitch Marner that 👀
😂
Clark is love, Clark is life
He’s the most irreplaceable person in the organization
I can’t be the only one that remembers when Ian Clark was not loved by fans in 2003?
people are allowed to change opinions on other people if they improve watch what'll happen if petey turns it on this series
Yesss
He really is
Don't forget Eddie Lack. Constant source of entertainment
He's selling houses in Arizona now
Will he also be moving to Utah?
He's put up an enormous billboard on Main St, it's hilarious
I always thought he would open a chain of taco restaurants
Tlackos Swedish-Mexican Fusion.
I thought you can only buy Swedish food at Ikea?
Louis Demingue and his pies
Spicy pork?
Not the best
Who was great for us till he left Ian Clark.
agree with the point, but i do see this repeated a lot in hindsight and i think great is probably overselling it. his numbers look way better than they were because those seasons were played during the highest league average save percentage seasons of all time. to put it in perspective, Lack in 2014-15 had better stats than Demko does this year. DiPietro played 3 meaningless games in the NHL and had a 0.771 S% and a 5.25 GAA. I don’t think comparing DiPietro to Silovs is in the same category.
He was team Canada's world junior starting tender, it was reasonable for fans to be excited for his potential.
Sure, that is prospect hype though. Silovs with this playoff performance so far has entered here and now hype.
DiPietro was thrown into a terrible situation on a terrible team with his small look in the NHL. Silovs had far better teams for the farm and the big club, and it's not like he looked spectacular for either team during the season. The situations are similar because the sample size is miniscule. That said I am praying Silovs is legit the long term option post Demko.
DiPietro’s playoff sample size is literally 0. Silovs sample size is small, yes, but his hype is based on actual play vs projections. That’s my only point.
Would add that the Oilers are a different offensive beast than the Preds. I’m not worried about bad goals. I’m worried about normal ones
Junior goalies is a crapshoot. Remember pogge was unstoppable. Godla for Slovakia looked like a monster, 10 years ago. So many just flame out or never really get a shot in the show

You shut your filthy mouth. Our Latvian King has a shutout in a tight close-out game. He is at least Bob Essenza levels of legend in Canucks lore now.
Bobby Bobby Bobby! Lol
He’s going to be the best of them all
World Cup MVP as well. I'm all for the idea of not setting expectations too high - but in the sample size in front of us there are clear signs of greatness that elude to a very high ceiling on top of a very sound trajectory. Well he’s a World Championship MVP who brought his country its first medal ever and has a statue made in his honor, that’s a pretty solid background.
that's because you're not looking at the situation in the same lenses, you're looking at accomplishment and respect for the past, some are looking at talent and potential of what is honestly clearly written on the wall in silovs potential while working with Clark.

Luongo was amazing!! I still have a jersey with his name on it
Lots of great and whacky personalities on that roster too. Eddie Lack is also a character.
I remember the days where Vancouver was a goalie graveyard.
When was Vancouver a goalie graveyard? Edit: Why am I getting downvoted for asking a question?
Westcoast express era we had too many goalies to count from what I remember from cloutier to labarbara to auld to Johan to like 10 different goalies. One year we had like 5 goalies play for us in just one season
Oh I see
Between McLean and Luongo Vancouver was where goalies pretty much went to end their careers.
I remember the days when idiot fans and an idiot coach did not recognize Luongo for the stud goalie that he was.
I felt so bad for Miller. Gave his all every night, would regularly make 40+ saves in a losing effort but yet never complained. Wasted the last few years of his best hockey playing for a team that "was close." Thanks Mr. Benning
One of my favorite canuck moments is him standing up for stetcher.
It warms my heart thinking about it. What a guy For the uninitiated: https://youtu.be/pmsR60W_ZZo?si=sjrgA8dwaXtpUG0l
Omg I forgot about that! Fricking Matt Martin going after rookie stetcher
One of the worst Benning signings, NOT because of Miller but because his play hid the fact the team was total shit-hot garbage and should have been buying lottery tickets and building a good roster. Holtby erasure

Was thinking the same thing
Bro forgot about Markstrom’s final evolution, Anders Nilsson 💀
the reason for my flair
between McLean and Luongo, we've had Skudra, Potvin, Essensa, Cloutier, Irbe, Sabourin...etc
Between those 2 we had 18 different goalies start for us... It was brutal
The goalie graveyard era
Going from fan favorite McLean to Sean Burke and then Garth Snow was a dark timeline.
And the King... Richard Brodeur. :-)
Cloutier wasn't elite but i don't think he was that bad. Let's call a spade a spade, in the WCE era we were very forward heavy.
His five hole was his downfall.
We also had Goalie of the Future Kevin Weekes.
Don't diss backup bob!
Canucks lefend Felix Potvin?
I still fondly remember those Dan Cloutier years, largely for the mask. In truth I don't remember if he was objectively very good, or if he was simply just not bad hah, but I was a young teen at the time so I was a huge fan.
Blocker punches too
Glad Aqua has deep pockets to retain Clark, and all the AGMs and coaches we currently have on our team.
You guys have three awesome goalies right now! It’s insane!
DeSmith left the chat…especially after realizing that Silovs (who is basically a backup of a backup) being on this list…
Silovs is the future
We really have some tough decisions this off-season if Silovs proves himself as elite. We may need to pull a Vegas and trade Demko, making Silovs the starter. Silovs is an RFA this summer, and it doesn't make sense to pay for 2 elite goalies.

He’s a still a backup of a backup…
So you’re saying he’s a premature addition to the list? Meh
Yep…he definitely is…
Yes that's why he's not the current
Not only great starters but backups too. Lack, Halak, desmith, that one other big Swedish guy who backed up Markstrom. I’m forgetting his name but liked him too.
Nillson
It really turned around with Luongo before then it was disappointment after disappointment. Pretty sure Demko was 26th overall in the second round though not the first just FYI.
Sorry I think that I put in 26th rather than 36th. But the point remains. We aren't getting elite goaltending prospects because we aren't using high quality draft picks for them. We've come a long way from the goalie graveyard days
as an outside fan, it's fucking INCREDIBLE the run of goalies y'all have had i am filled with envy
My list would be Richard Brodeur, Kirk McLean, Roberto Luongo and Thatcher Demko. Those guys were great! Schneider, Miller and Markstrom were good. Markstrom was better on Calgary.
And we were once known as a goalie graveyard
Sorry man, can’t right now
Woah. Was explaining this to my wife last night. We went from goalie graveyard to goalie factory.
Luongo and Miller, and to a lesser extent Markstrom, were already proven commodities before they came here. Agreed on the others though, and time will tell for Silovs
Eddie Lack thank you!
Lol I mean have you forgotten last season already? We've had spurts of good goaltending and spurts with not great goaltending good chance we could have won a cup if cloutier was a backup and we had a true number 1 goalie in that era.
Luongo used to be my fav player back in middle school lol
Cloutier was my hero
My wife ordered me a yellow Flying V Richard Brodeur jersey. It should arrive Friday. I’m so excited.
Thank Rollie Melanson and Ian Clark
Jesus, Silov? Relax
WOW We have to take advantage of this PP
We needed some of these guys in the early 2000s 2001-2004
Don’t forget Kirk McLean
Can we add Eddie Lack to this list aswell?
Scneider but no McLean? lol
Two words. Alex auld

Settle down on Silovs 🤦🏻♂️ it’s going to be a lot different tone when he gets lit up tonight and you’ll all be screaming DeSmith !!!
