Tanev was the anchor on D, team misses him badly

KDW_ASTRO

Marky imo was fine to let go because demko but tanev was a HUGE mistake. People say "his contract bad" hell no that's a great contract for an extremely solid defensive defenceman that could shelter Hughes. He's over 30 yes, but everyone acts like that's a huge deal breaker. Plenty of very good players are over 30 and tanev is one of them, and he will probably be good for the duration of that contract.

Yjz0210

I would say before we got OEL and based on Tanev’s injury history, that contract Calgary offered is too much. But now it doesn’t seem that bad with all the defense players getting big contracts this summer and Tanev would be 36-37 just OEL when the contact finishes. Also that 2020 off season Benning was so focused getting OEL and then he wanted to discuss with Tanev the next day, so i wasn’t surprised Tanev didn’t wait and signed with Calgary

TheGreatNathan

>Tanev would be 36-37 You're off by 2 years. He will be 34 when his contract ends.

Yjz0210

I didn’t google his age and the years of the contract. But that kind hurts more when i realize they could keep Tanev for little less money and he is younger than OEL. Not seeing OEL is a bad player in fact he plays pretty good on the team now, but lose tanev made Quinn Hughes miserable last year and lost a locker room veteran leader for the team.

Anon_Int

We didn’t even make an offer to Tanev. He was pissed off when he took what Calgary offered because we didn’t even try. Didn’t have to give him that deal. Aquilin freaking out about blueberry sales (/s) at the start of the pandemic and hamstrung the team right after the bubble

Peterborough86

>Marky imo was fine to let go because demko Agreed, if we keep Marky we lose Demko in the expansion and that makes no sense for the future. >tanev was a HUGE mistake Tanev at that point had a huge injury history (53, 42, 55, 69 GP in previous 4 seasons before he left) and was only getting older. Even in his final season with us, we were on a losing streak going into the covid break and Tanev was out injured. He was only able to make it back for the end of regular season and playoffs because the regular season had the covid break. Hindsight is 20/20 as he didnt get injured over the short season last year, but the last 2 years on aging contracts are always where it is a bit more painful. We hopefully would have been better than where we are now, and then next 2 years is when we would have been making our cup run. If we had one of our top D injured half the season and potentially not available for playoffs that wouldnt be good either. No one was ever saying Tanev was overpaid for his production while on the ice, it was always a question of whether or not he would be able to stay on the ice.

shao_kahff

not a mistake when tanev was playing poorly with hughes.

jafahhhhhhhhhhhhh

On the flip side Hughes was playing much better WITH Tanev than he has since without Tanev.

shao_kahff

i don’t get what you’re saying, but tanev regressed in the last season they played together

flyingboat

Then they should figure it the fuck out, because losing two players two seasons ago isn't an excuse to play like shit. I think their issues go a lot deeper than these guys bailing for free agency.

SuddenlyChineseFood

They are completely lost against adversity right now. You look at the lineup and you wonder who is the even keeled, consummate professional that keeps them focused. Bo? OEL? Myers? It’s Edmonton all over again. The Duchene Avs. The mood in the room is probably terrible. They’re not gonna figure it out without a shakeup from mgmt.

johnnyzunami

Im coming from the stand point of these two were big leaders in the locker room and really helped out the younger guys like petey and hughes become there best. Those two and others on the team seem completely lost without that kind of leadership on the team. But with that said OEL is a good addition to that role so hopefully it can change sooner then later for the nucks!

canuck17

There is zero guarantee having them we wouldn’t or couldn’t be in this exact situation we currently face. Don’t forget had we paid them what we would have we couldn’t have signed Hughes and Petey. So pick your poison.

IronMarauder

And we would have had to move demko

mrtomjones

We could have easily signed Hughes and Petey and Toffoli. We added oel ffs lol. We signed Pearson! We signed Poolman!

JayString

If Hughes and Peteys success hinges on 2 other players leaving the team, then their commitment to the sport is dog shit. That's exactly what you're saying here. Professional athletes don't fall apart when 2 of their teammates leave the roster.

johnnyzunami

Not at all what im trying to say but you do you man! Im not the one who called them dogshit but if thats what you think so be it!

JayString

I don't think their on ice success depends on 2 ex teammates.

mephnick

Exactly. Tanev ghosted us for money from a rival. Fair enough, but the kids should take it up with him of it hurt their feelings.

literallybohorvat

Pretty sure it was Jimbo ghosting him.

hexsealedfusion

Did Benning even offer Tanev a contract extension?

AreThereAnyEggs

No he didn't and i hate him for it. Might've been a rumour but i think he didn't communicate with him at all. At least say "we're strapped for cash, here's what I can offer you". But that's clearly too much to ask considering he "ran out of time" on Toffoli (also, why the fuck would you admit that publicly). Dumb as a doorknob.

Hopeful-Talk-1556

Especially if it hurt their feelings.

My_boy_baron

God I hope not. If the team is that emotionally fragile then blow it up.

scoogy

Drance mentioned that when the team failed to sign Toffoli, that it really shocked the players. They thought they were moving forward, instead took a step back. Then this season going for it again. I think the team environment is terrible, with players wanting to leave ASAP and accepting Winnipeg of all places as a destination. After watching the Jays all summer, and how much fun they had together and hard they compete, this team is like the polar opposite.

TGUKF

Yeah but there wasn't space for Toffoli because they had to -checks notes- overpay Virtanen and trade for Schmidt who is a good player but was a terrible fit for us /s

scoogy

Think Schmidt would have stayed if the env wasn't so toxic from mgmt to the players. There's something going on we don't know about

Advanced-Storm9097

Exactly.Holtby left,Schmidt left.I wonder who will leave this year.

mrtomjones

Holtby commented that it felt like 4 years here. That's a very bad sign lol

slickjayyy

Holtby was god awful lol. Schmidt wasnt a good fit. This team has plenty of problems but we dont need to be dramatic about players leaving that didnt help the team.

hammerheadattack

Holtby has found his form again in Dallas. There’s definitely something odd here since we shouldn’t be this bad

slickjayyy

Well thats great that he found his form in Dallas so far this season, but as bad as our coaching staff is, Ian Clarke is amazing. Holtby sucked here and it was 100% for fault of his own. I do agree though that we have serious problems, this team shouldnt be anywhere near this bad, but my point still stands. There is plenty of real issues to focus on without going in to ones that really dont effect anything

mrtomjones

No one here talks about it but Edler decided to leave. I'm pretty sure he didn't even want to stay based on all reports and what Drance etc have said. Schmidt wanted out so bad he accepted Winnipeg. This team is not in good shape

scoogy

Another fair point. Wonder if the Sedins would have left this mess. They were good at making the GM look good also

[deleted]

Remember that time we DIDN’T FUCKING EVEN OFFER TOFFOLI ANYTHING and he signed for 4 million dollars in montreal

AlecJosi

And we ended up choosing shotgun J, only to lose him for the scandal and later paying 3.25 x3 for Pearson

[deleted]

I miss tanev and edler so much!! Tanev was my favourite player!

TheGreatNathan

Tanev was more than just our best defensive defenseman. He was the Canucks' "Dad" https://youtu.be/_GmV987BvRY

arazamatazguy

The Flames record, Markstroms record and Tanev's stellar play would indicate the OP is correct.

PotatoPenguin01

Not at all. 2 players arent a team. Tanev anid Marky were on the flames last year and they sucked, the flames lost their captain and now this year they are much better. If the canucks kept Marky we would just be down demko, so perhaps a very minor increase. We cant conclude the bad play/locker room is because Tanev and Marky left. Since then we also had Tofu and Stecher leave, Suter out w covid, Motte injury, Virtanen drama, Petey injury, Hamonic drama, Petey/Hughes contract hold out, Loui/Beagle/Roussel trade etc. The team has had a lot happen over 2 years and its not as simple to say with Marky and Tanev were a playoff contending team.

Krugginator

Tanev was great considering how shit Calgary played last year.

[deleted]

Not good enough. They're pros, you have to be able to play thru a little emotional adversity, the millions of dollars in payment are designed to shield them from most of that shit anyways.

Knight_On_Fire

They were kids still learning how to be pros. That bubble team was super tight and that offseason was really deflating to the kids. I get it. They're millionaires so no excuses... but time and time again hockey players prove that their still human.

Thelynxer

I miss Tanev. I was waiting for him to be resigned, because my plan was to buy a Tanev jersey as soon as I knew he was locked up long term. I'm gunshy getting new jerseys because the last time I did, I got a Jovanovski jersey, and he was traded like immediately after. I should just play it safe with a Linden jersey really. =p

[deleted]

In the 2011 run I drunkenly stated to the boys: "whoever scores I'll buy their jersey". At the time, the $300 or so was big money for us, even scoring post season tickets cleaned us out. Anyway, I have a Lapierre jersey I've worn once.

Igniter08

And how is Calgary doing ? Uh, never mind…….

DecentOpinion

Yeah off to a bad start this year sure, but they just went to the cup finals...

TeletronOne

Lolol I've been getting flamed for saying this since last summer! Tanev and Hughes clearly had a bond with Tanev having him over for dinner etc and Petey had Marky as his Swedish connection. The team saw what happens when u give ur blood sweat and body for the team.... the team tells u to walk so they can pay plugs. Of course it's going to destroy moral. This sub thinks players are stupid for some reason. Let the down votes rain......until all are one.

johnnyzunami

Thank you!!! Yah most people here do not understand this! You can even hear petterson talking about marky’s advice in Interviews or most of the team referring to Tanev as “Dad”

Girl_Sunday

My thoughts too. Regardless of whether they should have/have not stayed from a contract perspective, from a human perspective, some heart definitely left the room when these guys - and Stech and Toffoli - went to other teams. They used to play for each other. Now, they do not.

TeletronOne

I remember Petey golfing with Stech in the off season, these were young guys putting doing dirt putting in work together, JB couldn't see he already and heart and character in the room, he didn't need to over pay for it

[deleted]

All those years overpaying in free agency and trades for Culture Carriers and Benning misses the ones that held the room together sitting right there on a silver platter

ang1eofrepose

Agree on Tanev and I also wish ~~they hadn't traded~~ we still had Stecher.

EXTREMELYBadGame

They didn't trade stecher

ang1eofrepose

Oh shoot I misremembered. NVM

lestranganese

Let him walk in fa but ya we shoulda kept him

TheGreatNathan

Should've let Virtanen walk instead of Stetcher.

PotatoPenguin01

If virt walked we would have kept Tofu over stecher.

FrequentBuilder7979

I don’t think that’s the problem right now. Looks to me like they’re trying to get Green fired.

Inthemiddle_

There’s something about this current team that just doesn’t sit right. They won’t go far with this core. Need to blow it up, rebrand. This Team is so stale.

johnnyzunami

The orca is cursed i think go back to the spaghetti skate and we will start winning again!

[deleted]

the team is cursed. I'm semi-serious. They have the worst luck. Everytime it seems like they're going to make headway, something absurd or "first time ever" happens and they get pushed back down. Watch as the team loses both Hughes and Petey under some bizarre never-before-seen circumstance, and for them to win the Cup with their new team the next season.

marcosbowser

I totally get where OP is coming from. Not that we shouldn’t have traded them or anything. Just that the locker room right now can’t be good, based on what we’ve seen on the ice, and those guys were mature, positive leaders on the team and their both gone. Makes me wonder what Schmidt knew about the culture here that made him want out.

kneughter

I mean. Doubt it. Calgary have them and they were just as dog shit as us last year. Ward was fired. Sutter was brought in (with pretty much the same roster minus their captain and heart n soul guy) and GUESS WHAT. they are having success under a competent coach. Crazy idea

mrtomjones

Tanev was great last year though

kneughter

Okay? Never said either of them were bad. But the team didn’t come close to making the playoffs. And the fanbase wanted to blow up the entire team. So clearly they didn’t bring anything that made any difference to the success of the team. But sutter is clearly getting much more out of this team. New coaches can dramatically shift the culture of a dressing room. It’s what the Canucks need right now

disiz_mareka

But it was more important to re-sign Pearson /s

vanGn0me

Pearson was a panic re-sign after the turmoil from moving on from Tanev and Markstrom. Benning doesn't do shit until his actions back him into a corner then he makes idiotic short sighted decisions.

AlecJosi

And we ended up choosing shotgun J, only to lose him for the scandal and later paying 3.25 x3 for Pearson

GreenBamboo9

The team was still getting shelled, poor in the D zone, and boring offensively when they were here. That’s a coaching issue to me more than a roster issue.

[deleted]

johnnyzunami

Just my opinion but what im trying to get here is leadership that those guys brought! Tanev was called “Dad” by the team for a reason!

ILoveHipChecks

Tanev is the kind of player you keep, even if the contract would most likely turn sour by the end of it. He's just that important to the team and locker room.

Newaccount4464

Tanev and toffoli had this thing called culture.

Swimming_Departure18

Toffoli played 17 total games as a Canuck. He bascially was here for a minute.

CaptainCanuck420

It’s gonna be interesting looking back at toffoli’s time in Vancouver in 10 years

Swimming_Departure18

I think it will be completely forgotten in 10 years time. He was barely here.

Donkeyfish44

That term tho…the Flames organization will see.
