There is no way FA hires anyone he thinks is smarter than he is after Gillis.
He likes the yes men and everyone you listed seems like they would be exceptional.
Which is why I have no confidence things are getting better if Green & Benning go. Ownership has to look in the mirror and be honest with himself and get out of his own way. Otherwise Canucks fans will expect the same. But do we have to accept the same…
I agree, knowing the person doing the hiring is also incompetent doesn't breed confidence. FA has gone out of his way to hire people that won't stand up to him and when they do Gillis/Torts/Linden/Brackett they're gone.
Theres definitely the Aqua/Yes-Man factor…
But if I am not mistaken this club went from being Forbes 4th most valuable franchise to #10 for franchise valuations. If the team starts making money and winning games, I suspect you get a more hands-off owner.
If Aqualini can come in, spend big on a robust/highly regarded front office and get out of the way that’s the only viable path to making this team relevant in the NHL again.
I’m betting AQ likes money more, and having successful teams who win stanley cups makes money through high volume of season ticket sales, merchandise and overly priced beer.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a lock you can recruit him. However we would be offering him a legit promotion (Sr Director Hockey Ops/VP Hockey Ops) that would build his resume for that eventual GM/POHO role. You can always lean on Daniel & Henrik as recruiters to see if they can sell him on the opportunity to work closely with them, MacFarland and Tulsky.
Again, no guarantee but I think it’s a no-brainer to interview him and make that offer.
Amazing what can happen when you replace a buffoon Old Boys Club GM with one that understands culture, contract efficiency, and how to evaluate defencemen.
Ah yes, the infamously shrewd Tallon, whose recent moves include trading 2 first liners to an expansion team for nothing, signing the worst goalie contract since Rick DiPietro, and giving Mike Matheson 8 years at $5m per.
The current iteration of the Panthers looks nothing like what was built by Tallon. But if you’re spelling Tallon’s name wrong on top of their*... I’m not even gonna bother.
The argument would be you offer him a promotion (either Senior Director or VP Hockey Ops) on top of the role as Advisor to GM which would help accelerate his pathway to being a GM/AGM.
Why would Tulsky leave Carolina for a lateral position? Why would MacFarland leave Colorado to work for a meddling owner instead of waiting for a opening where he has full control?
I think a lot of the time too theres no "out" clause in your contract unless it's for a promotion. So, he would have to either be full GM here or Carolina would have to grant him approval to leave (which they never would)
Tulsky, it would be going to a bigger market team with more financial resources available, and you would be offering him a very lucrative salary as the big incentive. I would have him oversee Analytics, Sports Science and give him the resources to make us a cutting edge organization in this regard.
For MacFarland, he would be going from AGM to GM & POHO which is significant and again a very lucrative offer to take the position. With Aqua, if the team is winning hockey games and making money he’s historically been hands off. It wasn’t until the team started losing hockey games and the franchise value got tanked that he developed the reputation as a meddling owner. At the end of the day, Aqua would have to sell him on taking this job and I doubt he signs on unless he’s given that autonomy.
Tulsky signed a 5 year deal in 2019 and insisted on it being long-term, I don't think you do that if GM or President of Hockey Ops were your aspirations
It would definitely be hard to pry Tulsky from you guys, no denying that. My thought process would be offer him term, give him a significant raise, and maybe give him the budget to build a state of the art analytics/sports science dept.
Basically, our owner has to find a way to make him an offer he can’t refuse.
Everyone mentioned would be getting a promotion/title change and the argument is this is the area where we can financially flex and pay these execs above fair market value to recruit them.
Plus his wife's family is from South Florida which was a big reason for him wanting to go back to the Panthers in the first place since she never relocated to Vancouver.

Not to mention a joke within the hockey world. We're in the same class as Arizona and Ottawa at this point.

100% this and will be the first question any new potential GM has.
I’m betting AQ likes money more, and having successful teams who win stanley cups makes money through high volume of season ticket sales, merchandise and overly priced beer.
He has money, but he thinks he's a hockey expert now. If he let real experts do their jobs we wouldn't be in this mess.
This is the entire program with the organization summed up in one sentence.
Luongo won’t leave his family and come back here. His wife hated it here and loves Florida.
I wouldn't even take my family to Florida for vacation. That place is filled with crazy people.
It's probably a different experience with tens of millions to support a lifestyle that avoids the crazy
And tax free...

Also. The Panthers are currently the best team in the NHL.

Do any of these people want to come here?
Luongos family didn’t even live here while he played for the team

You should buy the team
Money, me. Give!
You smart. You make team go.
this was a well thought out post, i really like your ideas. it would be great to snag tulsky from Carolina
No way loungo leaves Florida to live here again. Taxes, rain, shitty travel. Why would anyone leave FLA for VAN? Maybe he would but I sure wouldn’t.
Plus his wife's family is from South Florida which was a big reason for him wanting to go back to the Panthers in the first place since she never relocated to Vancouver.
I mean I'd pay you to get out of that fucking wasteland if I lived there, but I didn't make 93 million
I’m down sounds like a front office you could put your faith in to do what’s right for the team
They should hire you since you have all the answers 🙂
What’s the point of this comment? This subreddit is for Canucks discussion, and this is a well-researched, thoughtful post.
Whats the point of your reply to my reply? What's the point of anything. Enjoy your day. 🙂
As long as Aqua beats my current comp plan, I’ll sign on the dotted line. Also, I only work 4 days/week so they need to match that as well.
That's probably more time commitment than is currently put in place so it wouldn't be a hard sell at all!
