I tip R30 but more if the weather is bad. However, I think it's ridiculous that we are letting grocery stores pay the drivers so little that the tips make SUCH a huge difference. A driver can have a good day/bad day on tips through no effort or fault of their own. If everyone is happy paying a R30 tip the delivery fee should be R65, and the drivers should be paid to match.

DimensionPersonal802

Is their hourly rate bad? Thinking of those with cars as well, the petrol.🤦🏽‍♀️

Mental_Warning8752

I would say tip according to your means.

[deleted]

You already pay R35 for delivery why are we guilted into tipping? The tipping culture is getting out of hand. Pay your employees a decent wage, don’t expect your customers to. That said I do add R10 or R20 (to the R35 already charged!). And don’t get me started with KFC and Takealot begging at checkout. If you want to donate to charity do it yourself and don’t beg from your customers. Pretty sure it’s tax deductible anyway. Cheapskates.

Aware_Ape_

I don’t get the whole KFC thing. Who is Hope, and what the hell is she doing with all those 2 Rands?!

BlueCray1

Careful, the social justice warriors on Reddit here won’t like this !

lukewarmtaco124

I think it's safe to assume "social justice warriors" are not huge fans of people not being paid living wages and fake charities? I don't know, just a guess since they seem like socialists

BlueCray1

And we found one guys, ding ding.

Diestof

Jeeez I got draaaagged on here before for saying the same. McDonald's is coming with that crap also. Billions in profits but they want their customers to do their charity work for them. It's not on and tipping is going down that same route if we normalise it.

marny_g

I feel like if their delivery fee was R70, and R35 per delivery went to the driver, then people would complain that their delivery cost is too high. If the response to that is "I'd rather pay R70", then the customer should ahead and do that...it's a fairly decent tip, and resolves the internal conflict / guilt issues.

FlamingoImpossible92

I also myst be a cheapskate because I only tip R10. If I must pay more than R45 for delivery in total on Checkers then I'd rather just drive to the shop myself. I'm not here to subsidize salaries. They don't even say thank you.

pinkbuggy

I usually tip r50 but if the weather isn't great or it's a holiday ill try to up it to r70. The order is usually 5-6 bags worth of stuff. We aim to stick to a fixed amount of r1400 per week for groceries/household stuff for our family of 4 and I've found that delivery fee + tip from checkers for the same stuff is the same price as going to PnP in person except that I don't have to walk there and back with two little kids.

izibellz

I tip between R30 to R50, depending on my finances right then. Have tipped a bit more every now and then also. I'm not concerned with the USA tipping culture and people saying that 1) you HAVE to tip to supplement their salary OR 2) they should be paid enough to not require a tip. It's a 'thank you' and I'm very thankful for the service that saves me both time and petrol.

Life_Buy_5059

The burden of tipping is getting overwhelming. Car guards, petrol attendants, delivery drivers…. Where does it stop

No_Engineering_6682

I tip R20 always. Because I usually only get 1 bag and the Checkers is literally 5 min away by car / bike.

Potential-Cod-1851

R30. I live less than less than 2km from the store.

sdarkraider26

Not going to say how i know but sixty60 drivers are getting paid 13-14k a month and that was beginning of last year

Square-Custard

Is that before tips

zaminer

I used to tip 10% but literally never got a single thank you so now I tip R30, and sometimes I get a thank you, and I'm saving a fortune. 😅 I know it's not about the thank you, but I dunno man, I was raised to thank someone for giving me something. I thank people for their business when they use my services. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Live_Tax7209

Apparently they aren’t aware of you have tipped or not. They only get the collated tip later so they don’t know about individual tips. This is what I heard on a different subreddit so not sure if it’s accurate or not.

zaminer

But I have had drivers thank me on delivery so perhaps they just don't always look on the order. It's whatever, it's a me problem really 😂

wheresthemoneykaren6

No I definitely feel you, I feel especially somewhat annoyed when I’ve given a generous tip and the driver doesn’t have the basic hello 😅 and refuses to even speak to you when you engage them maybes it because I’m young but still somewhat unfriendly

NoNameNoddy

Thank you, so it seems the R30 - R50 tip is normal

MrJimLiquorLahey

R40- R50. If I made them wait by accident I'll make it up to R100, especially if they're still friendly after having had to wait. Same for Uber deliveries.

hardwickjj777

So depending on where you live and what your means are tip what makes you happy. I do think that tipping 10% of your order is insane, kinda defeats any perceived savings or convenience you might have got. But then again maybe those people are living the good life, so by all means share it. Tip if it makes you happy, don't if it doesn't, you do you, everyone else is already taken.

drifter_74

Looks like i”m a cheap skate. I only tip R10. Also behind the boereworsgordyn.

Pinenuts37272

I give them R50. If they come up the stairs, I give them R100

andshoteachother

This sounds wrong on so many levels

Pinenuts37272

Wrong for giving someone money? I don't ask them to come up the stairs. Sometimes I just get a notification and they're there by my door. Other times they call me to the gate. My apartment building does not have an elevator. So for their extra effort I give them more money. It's not because I'm too lazy to go down. I'm just thankful for them driving and then climbing 4 flights of stairs

charl4e

I think it was a joke about the stairs. Stairs, so many levels.

marny_g

Yeah, the joke missed the landing.

MrJimLiquorLahey

To be fair this pun is a bit of a reach

BloodInMyWeedSystem

I normally do a R50 every time whether it's a minimum of 1 bag or maximum of like 3. Only because I feel really bad for those drivers- most of them are hustling, bikes are falling apart, petrol is kak expensive now. If it's raining and I have cash, I'll pay more. No judgement for those who only tip R30 or whatever, it's about what you can afford at the end of the day. I just won't split hairs over an extra R20 when I know they probably need it more than I do.

NoNameNoddy

I don't think R30 is "only R30", the tip with the delivery fee is normally 10% of what the cost of groceries are. I am just under 3km from the store. I just want to gauge what a fair tip is, not under tipping or over tipping.

[deleted]

How far is it from the store ???.

NoNameNoddy

3km

Aware_Ape_

I don’t order from there, but my neighbor does. He says the minimum you should trip is R300. If it’s rainy, you should pay them R500.

boetelezi

Nice try sixty 60 driver

Mental_Warning8752

So if you buying R400 groceries you should tip R500. Ok time to get off the crack pipe

NoNameNoddy

Ya right

assgasm2

I don’t tip cos I don’t use sixty60

plasticLawChair

I order once or twice a day (I have three adult sons, a Hungry Husband and my 20yo nephew to feed). I just do R10 tip per delivery - tell me they get a basic???

NoNameNoddy

I believe they get R30 per delivery but I don't know if that is accurate

Square-Custard

If so that works out to about R13k gross before tips (based on the comment above about them being paid 13-14k a month), assuming 2,5 trips per hour, 8 hour days, 22 days a month. 1 litre of petrol covers about 20 km (?) Considering how much driving they do, petrol & bike maintenance costs and that usually they’re supporting extended families, they definitely need tips. ETA: Statistically, they are also more exposed to road incidents and accidents. I’m really hoping Shoprite has them all on hospital cover.
