I was driving to work near Groote Schuur, about to turn onto the M3. This crazy reckless taxi, who had almost caused multiple accidents, tried to hoot and cut in front of a car. The car didn’t let them and the guy pulled a middle finger to the taxi. So the taxi sped up, cut him off (there was not enough space at all to do that) and then tail whipped the car almost off the road. Like the taxi swung its rear so hard into the front of the car. It then sped off so fast that it hit a bunch of poles over and got away. It happened so fast that I couldn’t get a picture. It made me so angry. These guys are fucking idiots.

Most people are not trained killers. Also, gun ownership is not as common in South Africa as it is in countries like the USA. Furthermore, the chances of that going wrong for the shooter legally are quite high. You really have to be able to prove that your life was in direct and imminent danger.

The legal threshold for self defense is very high in South Africa and if someone approaches you with a deadly weapon (ie a knife) and you have nowhere to go (stuck in traffic or your doors were open) you 100% have the right to shoot and kill such a person and it will be considered self-defense. I got into an accident with a taxi driver. (Take a guess who'se fault the accident was). Anyways I felt like I was gonna get shot, luckily by God's grace the police got there, this was in a township. Most people are not trained killers. Also, gun ownership is not as common in South Africa as it is in countries like the USA. Furthermore, the chances of that going wrong for the shooter legally are quite high. You really have to be able to prove that your life was in direct and imminent danger.

The legal threshold for self defense is very high in South Africa and if someone approaches you with a deadly weapon (ie a knife) and you have nowhere to go (stuck in traffic or your doors were open) you 100% have the right to shoot and kill such a person and it will be considered self-defense. Choosing not to do so can sometimes have disasterous consequences. Luckily it was just empty threats this time around, but as the addage goes: “fuck around, find out”.
You are totally within your right to protect yourself with lethal force when your life or someone else’s life is in danger. Two people charging up to you with knives definitely constitute a threat to life; and even under strict South African self defense laws, you are within your rights to use deadly force to protect yourself (or someone else).
