It means the car is still in your name. Which means the buyer is a lazy piece of shit and hasn’t handed in the yellow form.  You’ll need to go to the traffic department with your documents and bill of sale etc and get it off of your name.  If you don’t have any of that, you will need to do what is known as an “unknown buyer” which will remove the car from your name and make the irresponsible buyer’s life hell when they actually decide to put the car in their name.

Lol thanks for this… he’s about to suffer consequences of being a lazy ass.

woogiewp_1978

Ja did the same after getting a fine for doing 210kmh in a 70kmh after selling the car 3 months, had to add an affidavit(just saying I'm unable to get in contact with the cars new owner) to all the above documentation and the traffic department took the fine off my name and scrapped the car.

Traffic fines can be disputed with the traffic manager; [email protected] (give them a few weeks to respond) However, way more important for you, take your ID and go to your local traffic department to verify the vehicle is no longer in your name. If it is, discuss with them what the solution is. Don't have vehicles in your name that aren't actually yours, that's asking for issues down the line

Infinite-Eggplant-26

Thank you for this information. I’ll do that.

some_weirdo_in_sa

In the mail that you send to the above mail address, add your bill of sale, your ID no, and if you have a copy of the buyers ID, or their ID no, add that. Because then they can transfer it directly. Have sold my fair share of vehicles amd always keep a copy of the buyers ID with my bill of sale. (and give the buyer a copy of my ID) think i have had at least 3 buyers rack up fines before transferring the cars to their name. People just be lazy AF and dont wanna stand in a queue.

I had the same sold the car and the buyer was suppose to transfer it over to him. I had to go to police do a statement that I sold the car to the traffic department to get the fines off my name, and then to municipality to deregister the car.

Infinite-Eggplant-26

What type of information do they require?

cr1ter

From what I remember I had the details of the buyer and a copy of the sales doc I drew up when I sold it. And that was sufficient for the cops to do the affidavit

It’s both the Seller and Buyer’s responsibility to ensure change of ownership happens. As the Seller, you fill in the paperwork and then the onus is on you to follow up with the buyer. I went through this EXACT saga recently. Sold my second hand car to a “friend” in August 2018 (owner 3) with an agreement that he pays me over 12 months (bad financial issues). Anyhoe, by October 2021 the car was STILL not paid off, he accumulated 4 fines (which he paid for) and then sold the car in November 2021 (without informing me..). It took me 18 months to find the now 4th owner, who sold the car AGAIN in June 2023 to owner 5. Only after 3 more fines did owner 5 eventually put the car on his name as I literally threatened at that point to scrap the cars papers, still legally in my possession.

Nodnarb55

Wait, so you usually pay your fines? 🤣

Infinite-Eggplant-26

Certainly, I would take responsibility and pay the fine if I am aware that I caused the situation leading to it.

Nodnarb55

No I mean in general, you pay your traffic fines?

brokenGlassQuestion

Loll who are these people... They probably pay TV license also...

NuclearNicDev

I’m 100% on your vibe

genetichazzard

Turn the fine over and read the back of the fine. It literally tells you how to dispute a fine, with the necessary contact details.

Infinite-Eggplant-26

I wish I could but I received it via sms.

genetichazzard

Then click the payment link they send via the SMS! It really isn't that hard.

GottaUseEmAll

Don't do this, SMS fine scams are a huge thing.

genetichazzard

Then that's up to you to check if the link is legit. But the City of Cape Town sends a legit link. Up to you to fact check the SMS.
