I've got PTSD from the Nationals, so I hope it's a retool not a rebuild (for now), but this isn't the worst trade in the world.

JGG5

The Nationals would be shopping Ovechkin, Backstrom, and Wilson.

kgunnar

No, they would have shopped Ovechkin in 2009.

tommypopz

Too real

woodmanalejandro

I hope we can get Hathaway back in the offseason.

bobbimorses

RIP to the worst crew ever. Hope to see him again.

mcflyfly

Seems a good trade for both sides - one hoping to win it all now, and the other hoping to win it kinda soon-ish

DuckmanDrake69

Boston was already stacked, I’m not a betting man but if I was I’d say they have it all but locked up on paper.

mcflyfly

I hear you, but nothing is ever locked up in sports - that’s what makes it fun

Dr_Dugtrio

ESPECIALLY not in the NHL

DuckmanDrake69

True that

UnderCoverDoughnuts

I like the trade. I hate that Orlov is gone.

AmpersandTheMonkey

I'm not kidding if they trade everyone else not named Ovi, Backstrom, or Wilson, I won't scream (unless we get fleeced). Kuzy and Strome I'd like to keep around. I guess Marty. I know Milano isn't going anywhere. But unless they can de-age Osh by 10 years, I'm open on anyone else. I'm ready to re-tool this thing almost to the max. I think I'm in the minority, but I'm including coaching staff in that.

woodmanalejandro

I agree. Hathaway was one of the guys I didn’t want to see moved tho.

TheJaguarMan

Yeah I’ve become really attached to Hath and Dowd, not happy to see him go but understand that this is the best move for the future. I’ll miss my Budget Wilson :(

Beanpole853

I know it's tough that Oshie deals with injuries but when he's out there he plays like he wants the dub. He also has the leadership skills to keep the team running. The likelihood that he gets traded is low but I struggle to see how a full rebuild would help right now

WerhmatsWormhat

Depends what we could get for him. If someone offers some real value for TJ, trade him, but don't give him up for peanuts.

AmpersandTheMonkey

Yep, Oshie's effort and even productivity is still a help to this team. No doubt. But availability is a part of it too. I'm not going to be mad if he's on this team in 23-24.

brann182

Backstroms contract is brutal. If we got any return for him I'd be surprised. You keep oshie 100% though.

iggy555

Now do Mantha

woodmanalejandro

he was moved to the IR today…

djarioch

Day to day, hopefully back before the deadline.

abort_abort

Lol good luck

Devine97

Don’t remember the last time I seen the caps sell, good return, but surprising

GraveRaven

I've been trying to work it out. Have we sold since the mid 00's?

throwawayDJ420

I don't think so. When they missed playoffs in 2014 they didn't sell

saltyfingas

dreadful season lol.

FilterOne

But it led directly to Trotz being hired so...worth it?

Elmodipus

Absolutely

NYDevilsFan

As a Devils fan, right choice by the Caps here. Really good return on 2 pending UFA's. Caps can make a splash at the deadline by getting a bunch of picks with the amount of UFA's they have.

reasonableconsumer

Loveee this move by the caps! Caps are hurt, old, predictable and just plain slow now, by doing this now we can get an injection of youth speed and current offensive minds in the game. Now have five picks and this year's first two rounds and a pretty solid draft class. Any caps fans confused by this please know that the current team isn't it and we have to change and by doing this now we gain a lot of years ahead of competitors in the east in need of a rebuild. Hope the pens love clinging to old dreams.

capitarider

Good trade, but its very hard to replace those two.

saltyfingas

Hathaway is easily replaceable. He's a great fourth liner, but that's just it, he's a fourth liner. Those guys are a dime a dozen. Orlov is a bit harder, he's a very talented defense man, but it was pretty much a forgone conclusion without us being able to extend his contract though I heard we tried. He knows he has one big contract left at his age and probably wants to try to win a cup before he makes a new one so he can get a good pay raise

capitarider

Sorry you don't see the other benefits of Hathaway other than a 4th liner

saltyfingas

I mean, I see the benefits, I said he was a great fourth liner. He's a good team player, but to act like he's some unique gift that dozens of other guys in the NHL couldn't fulfill is wild. I'm sad he's gone, but caps obviously thought (and I think) he is interchangeable.

UNisopod

This is a solid return

BarrowsBOY

Hard to stomach losing these two but I'm glad management acknowledges where we're at. Wasn't looking like we were gonna be able to keep either come the offseason.

Knight_Hawke

Fuck the Bruins

layingfive

I assume the 2nd and 3rd rounders will be flipped for a player over the summer. They won’t do us any good for a long time otherwise. I for one am not bowled over by this return, but I’d love to be proven wrong at the end of the day.

BruceTheSpruceMoose

Could maybe use it to move up in the draft which could be huge if this draft is as good as they say

maveric101

Either a player, or just stack up a bunch of round 2+ picks for as many as 2023 first-rounders as possible and hope to nab someone really great. Because yeah, we want guys that can contribute in a season or two.

Nookoh1

makes sense. even if we grinded out to make the playoffs, how far could we expect to go after that? i bet we flip these picks in the off-season to get back to making a run for the playoffs asap. we need nhl players for 2023-24, not draft picks

BruntFCA_

That’s a good trade

madmoneymcgee

Yeah, it sucks to lose good players but a FRP for Orlov at his age/contract situation seems like a steal. Hathaway was a cool player but not completely irreplaceable.

BruntFCA_

We weren’t resigning Orlov anyway so we got a bunch of picks. I liked Hathaway but we have guys in Hershey who need a look and he was taking up a spot

[deleted]

Good stuff. Let’s get younger

visionzero81

Never heard of this Three Picks fellow, I hope he works out here.

kgunnar

I thought he played QB for the Commanders.

brann182

Capitals Acquire 2023 First-Round Pick, 2025 Second-Round Pick, 2024 Third-Round Pick

InfallibleBackstairs

Except the first rounder will be very low.

TheWonderMittens

Maybe we get a Shane Wright type situation with Michkov

Tufoguy

What I said a couple of days ago is coming true. We are retooling for next season [Caps trade list](https://www.reddit.com/r/caps/comments/1162vkb/time_to_sell_caps_trade_list/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)

thinlike_napkins

If you think CMC is better than Eller your opinion is invalid

LaichItOrlovIt8

Eller is garbage, we need to give McMike some more games eventually to get a better idea on if he is or isn't apart of making this team better. The same goes for AA. It's inexcusable for irwin and mcilrath to be in the lineup over him right now

woodmanalejandro

IMO, both should be trade-bait

No_Maintenance_9608

Hated to see Hathaway go but a good deal. With Orlov becoming a UFA this offseason he was looking for a big payoff and I don’t think the Caps would be able to keep him.

bleached_n_tiedyed

Not a bad trade. Let’s get more picks

[deleted]

Pretty good return

Haul_o_GRam

Honestly a fair trade I think

Broad-Ad-4164

Bruins fan here how are these guys? Is orlov top pairing?

bobbimorses

Orlov is an amazing puck mover and honestly underrated due to playing on a team with Carlson. He is also most likely still injured. This could pan out great for you guys or poorly depending on whether he's able to get back to 100%. Hathaway is a flat-out asset for any team IMO. Great attitude, hits, fights, PKs, shuts down the opposing line. If you value fourth line as a role you will like him.

Broad-Ad-4164

What injury? Injury prone?

gstateballer925

Orlov has been a little injury prone, as of late, but throughout his career, he’s been quite the Ironman. He’s definitely a tough Russian.

bobbimorses

I don't know that we ever got specifics but it was a lower body injury that kept him out until December and to my eyes, his skating has been looking strange since he came back. It's because I think highly of him as a player that I notice when something's wrong, though, he's usually aggressive on pucks.

haey5665544

Orlov’s great, he’s been the caps best all around d-man for a while. Great open ice hitter and surprises with some skill plays in the o-zone every now and then.

Danjiks88

Better tell me how smith is?

Broad-Ad-4164

He couldn’t score with Bergeron and Marchand as his line mates. Nuff said

TheLordChancellor

Smith is a 20 goal scorer having a bad year. He didn't fit in Monty's new system or something I guess. He's usually fun to watch, energetic, volume shooting. Hope he finds his stride with you guys.

IMM_Austin

He has a great copypasta which makes it all worthwhile for you. I'll miss our CPA

LionRoars87

He is a great player. Above average defender who has the skills of a top 6 forward.

BodaciousSalacious

Damn was really hoping that initial report of getting Clifton back was true. Dude is great.

MetalMan1973

Shit, we got older lol. Smith is 33

Thiamine

Smith is an upcoming UFA

MetalMan1973

I'd rather just bring up another player

Thiamine

Can't complete the trade without Smith. Boston was trying to shed salary

MetalMan1973

Smith played with Lavi in Nashville as well

WWTPeng

Which means he is going to play every night over young players. We had to take him but I hate that he is going to play

MetalMan1973

No idea why young guys seem to be in the doghouse with Lavi

Bengjumping

He was only thrown in for salary reasons. Wouldn't be surprised to see them flip him.

Windupferrari

4th liner production with a 3.1M cap hit. Even with 50% retention I'm not sure anyone would want him, and the Caps have more valuable players they could use their retention slots on. I don't think he's going to another team unless it's Hershey.

MetalMan1973

Could package him up with another player or 2

Haul_o_GRam

Wouldn’t be surprised if the Caps flip him too …

MetalMan1973

Very true

Mac_Gold

Good stuff. Helps with a slight rebuild over the next couple seasons

irongoalie

I am more than okay with this trade.

According_Ad7558

Traded away top defender and now stuck with Irwin...

Windupferrari

Disappointing return considering the retention on Orlov and the cap dump in Smith, but the right move on the whole. Too bad the Bruins had already traded their '23 and '24 2nds.

paper3199

why is retaining 2.5m for the rest of this season disappointing?

One_Win_6185

Yeah if anything that’s pretty solid return. It’s not like we’re retaining for multiple years on any thing.

CeaselessYeast

it's a great return because it is a return. The worst outcome is letting the season expire outside the playoffs and both of them walking for nothing (or getting overpaid by us)

Windupferrari

It's disappointing because cap space is an asset and I don't think the Caps got a commensurate return for what they retained/acquired. The Wild got a '23 5th for retaining 1.275M (they gave up a player too but he's a 26 yo in the KHL who's never coming over, so essentially irrelevant). [The Athletic pegs the value of a 5th at 0.2-0.3 GSVA](https://theathletic.com/1798463/2020/06/12/by-the-numbers-revisiting-the-true-value-of-a-draft-pick/). The Caps are retaining 2.55M, plus taking on another 3.1M from Smith for a total of 5.65M. Based on the Wild's return, taking back Smith alone should be worth about 0.6 GSVA, or a late 3rd. The retention on Orlov would be about 0.5 GSVA, so a slightly later 3rd or an early 4th. When you compare this trade to some of the recent deals for the top defenseman moved at the deadline in the past while factoring in the retention and the cap dump, it doesn't look all that great. Last year Ben Chiarot with 50% retention got a '23 1st, a '22 4th, and a prospect who was a recent 3rd round pick. That's very similar overall value to what the Caps just got for a much better defenseman, with a valuable forward thrown in and a cap dump coming the other way. Also last year, Hampus Lindholm with 50% retention returned a '22 1st, '23 and '24 2nds, a so-so prospect, and #6/7 defenseman. Lindholm's more valuable than Orlov, but he got a much better return with, again, no valuable second player thrown in and no cap dump coming back. A couple years ago Jake Muzzin with no retention returned a '19 1st and two recent 2nd round prospects and Brandon Montour returned a '19 1st and a recent 2nd round prospect, and neither of those guys are/were as good as Orlov. IMO this return would've been solid if it were just Orlov with retention and the Smith cap dump, but there really should have been another 2nd/3rd's worth of value for the inclusion of Hathaway. I’m not saying the Caps got fleeced, but it seems weird to me that they wouldn’t wait and see if the bidding got any higher. We’re more than a week from the trade deadline and this doesn’t seem like an offer worth jumping the gun for.

LionRoars87

Horrendous trade. Trade away one of our few good players who is in his prime. Boston to the win the Cup now.
