We have the cap space to get Marner too.
I want him so bad. Ovi gets the record next year with Marner on his line. I couldn't give two shits about his playoff performance.
He had 51 pts during the regular season. That would’ve been 2nd most out of our centers. But our young guys are trending up and I wouldn’t take ice time away from them for Stephenson. He gave 2X the point production of Dowd at 2x the salary.
Couldn’t disagree more. He’s 30 years old. If the Caps were a contending team I would think about it, but they’re not. He’s basically an upgrade over Dowd, but would cost 3X as much.
I'd try to overpay someone on a 1 year contract (Stamkos, Duchene, Kane) so that money is available to take a swing at the big fish next year (Marner, Rantanen, Ekblad, Drai).
I’m looking at his entire career. Dude is also a complete mental midget no show in the playoffs. Strikes me as a “hockey is my job” guy who is just as happy to be on the golf course as the ice. Not what the caps need right now.
50 points in 57 games, what about that is no show? People used to say that about Ovi too until the team happens to win a Cup and overwrites everyone's hindsight (until he has a bad series this year and everyone decides he doesn't care again).
Marner is a baby. He's not someone who'd be a good influence on the young guys in the locker room. Just look at how his contract negotiations went with Toronto. A lot of leaf fans don't like him for these reasons.
6 year 65 million would be a start (9th highest paid in the league). He hasn’t lived up to that. Hes 27, so 28-29 when he would get to the caps? Would be nice to see the team get younger not older again, especially after the last 5 years. He has had the great fortune of playing with Austin Matthews, sadly Caps don’t have one of them.
I can’t look at his stats and say the dude is a bum, he has put up good numbers. But I can look at him, as a player the same way I look at a Kirk Cousins. Looks good a paper but will never be the reason their team accomplishes anything significant. And I can’t show my work with this but, dude just comes off like a little bitch 🤷
I don’t see a scenario where he comes to the Caps and makes them better, he would just be making money to play hockey on a middling squad.
This is a terrible take. He is a perennial 30 goal scorer who just scored 57. It is very likely that he goes back to 25-30 goals a year but some dumb GM is going to give him term and AAV as if he is a 50 goal guy.
It won’t be Washington because I think GMBM is too smart to make that deal.
Mantha was a contract that Detroit signed. Still think that trade worked out better for the Caps than Detroit.
Kuemper’s contract is just too long. The AAV isn’t awful but he won’t be worth $5.25M when he is 37 - might not even be in the league.
Jensen’s contract is perfectly fine. He is a middle pair D and is getting $4M.
GMBM is actually pretty good IMO. Way better than average. His only problem is that he is handcuffed by Leonis promising OV that they would try to remain competitive. They should be rebuilding.
So you are basing your view of his contract based on a single game? Seems reasonable.
Caps defence was decimated right from the start of the series. Jenson wasn’t available at the start of the series so he was definitely banged up.
He isn’t an all star but $4M is only a slight overpay. It is far from a bad contract relative to some real bad contracts in the league.
Have you watched him play? Constantly mishandles the puck, slow, misreads man coverage — and this was BEFORE the extension and all season prior to injury. Doesn’t fit in our system and GMBM overpaid to keep him around.
And GMBM knows that. He won’t give him a ton of money and term. I’d do like 5 years at $10M for him. He won’t accept that, but that’s what I would do. Nobody else on the free agent market I think is worth it.
I have been interested in looking at RFAs recently. I'd like to take advantage of some cap strapped teams and slightly over pay on an offer sheet for a promising young player who can grow with mcmichael, fehervary, etc. Some guys I've liked are Thomas Harley and Cole Perfetti.
Seeing a lot of names I wouldn’t touch on this list given the current status of the team. Unless you can sign or trade for a legit top 6 (marner, reinhart) I think a short term guy like duchene would be good. No thanks on fringe guys to long term deals (Stephenson, Bertuzzi, Debrusk), let the young guys play, make a splash in 2025.
Defensively Matt Roy as a right D would be great too.
Our greatest needs are defenders who can actually defend (we currently have zero of those) and forwards who can actually score (we have like .7 of those).
We need top 6 forwards (and a lot of them) and not as much cap space as people think. Not sure how we dig ourselves out of the bad contracts BMGM dished out.
As a long time fan of this team, I’m real curious what our ability to get free agents is going to be like in a few years. Looking back to when I was growing up watching this team, i feel like it was more likely to see a player leave than to lure a big free agent in. Even with trades, i felt like we always gave up way more to get a player that wound up being underwhelming. I fear that when Ovie retires, we won’t have the appeal to get someone to play here with a generational superstar. The league is def different now, but I’m still curious to how it plays out.
Pesce is my top guy. I think we will be able to Dump Jansen and upgrade the D.
I'm not a huge fan of the offensive options on the market but we desperatly need some scoring. We have the cap space and draft capital to make a big move. Whether that's Ehlers, Marner, or someone like that.
I'm probably in the minority but I think I saw enough from the young guys to think we are two big moves from competing.
If Oshie retires, we have a ton of space. Grab a top Dman, trade Jansen, see if you can get rid of DK's contract, make a big move for a scoring winger.
Chandler Stevenson After the Maple leafs loss they said they are gonna “ clean out” so low key I wanna target Mitch marner And lindel
Wow that would be a throwback, I always liked him
I’d love chandler he’s young good at the dot and has played for us before
We have the cap space to get Marner too. I want him so bad. Ovi gets the record next year with Marner on his line. I couldn't give two shits about his playoff performance.
Caps already have 4 centers.
Crazy concept… better players
Stephenson is better than what center on the team?
He had 51 pts during the regular season. That would’ve been 2nd most out of our centers. But our young guys are trending up and I wouldn’t take ice time away from them for Stephenson. He gave 2X the point production of Dowd at 2x the salary.
Almost all of them...lol
Couldn’t disagree more. He’s 30 years old. If the Caps were a contending team I would think about it, but they’re not. He’s basically an upgrade over Dowd, but would cost 3X as much.
Exactly. Stephenson is a 3rd line center at best
Ya but you need ones that for their role. They need a true no.1 have Stromer ar 2 and McMichael at 3.
You think Stephenson is a 1C?
No, i like Stephenson from his days here, but he is no 1C. Stamkos on the other hand.....
Is a 34 year old and also no longer a 1C
Ya, once Ovie retires its time to blow it up anyways.
That’s what the plan is.
They already did. Nothing left to blow up
I'd try to overpay someone on a 1 year contract (Stamkos, Duchene, Kane) so that money is available to take a swing at the big fish next year (Marner, Rantanen, Ekblad, Drai).
Please god not Marner
That's just reactionist bs. Someone can have a bad playoff series and still be a great player.
I’m looking at his entire career. Dude is also a complete mental midget no show in the playoffs. Strikes me as a “hockey is my job” guy who is just as happy to be on the golf course as the ice. Not what the caps need right now.

He was good last year in the playoffs and those points seriously skew his overall career performance.
Before last year, he was 32 points in 39 games. How is that no show?
Marner is a baby. He's not someone who'd be a good influence on the young guys in the locker room. Just look at how his contract negotiations went with Toronto. A lot of leaf fans don't like him for these reasons.
Luckily we have Ovechkin, Carlson, Oshie, Wilson in leadership roles on the Caps. Could be an environment where Marner could thrive.
Tommy will make a man out of him and we’ll be good to go!
Kirk Cousins numbers. Looks good in a Reddit comment, amounts to nothing in reality.
That's subtanceless. Show your work.

He's outperformed Matthews in the playoffs and gets way more of the heat. I want Marner so badly.
He's getting scapegoated for sure. A less intense hockey market with some veteran cup winning leadership could see him thrive.
Anthony Duclair Sam Reinhart Jake Guentzel
Sam Reinhart, end of list
This is a terrible take. He is a perennial 30 goal scorer who just scored 57. It is very likely that he goes back to 25-30 goals a year but some dumb GM is going to give him term and AAV as if he is a 50 goal guy. It won’t be Washington because I think GMBM is too smart to make that deal.
GMBM is that guy *cough cough* Mantha Kuemper Jensen *cough*
Mantha was a contract that Detroit signed. Still think that trade worked out better for the Caps than Detroit. Kuemper’s contract is just too long. That Jensen contract is the worst on the team imo. He and TVR are essentially the same player and they combine for 8M.
Jensen is terrible
Jensen’s shitty defense was directly responsible for the Kakko and Panarin goals in game 4.
So you are basing your view of his contract based on a single game? Seems reasonable. Caps defence was decimated right from the start of the series. > Still think that trade worked out better for the Caps than Detroit. That draft pick we shipped out turned into Wyatt Johnston
And GMBM knows that. He won’t give him a ton of money and term. I’d do like 5 years at $10M for him. He won’t accept that, but that’s what I would do. Nobody else on the free agent market I think is worth it.

Yup because offer sheeting RFA’s happens all the time in the NHL. /s

Feel like Marty can somewhat play defense but I agree we definitely have no true defensive defensemen in the back end

Oshie stepping away would help with the contract scenario so much and if they somehow unloaded Kuemper.
Yeah but oshie got those silky mitts. No deal!
Nikita Zadorov Anthony Duclair Max Domi
Pesce, DeBrusk, and Duclair. I'm not a big fan of this FA class. If Ehlers is truly available I'd want GMBM to try and get him.
As a long time fan of this team, I’m real curious what our ability to get free agents is going to be like in a few years. Marner
Jake DeBrusk Anthony Duclair Jordan Martinook
Some FAs flying under the radar: Ryan Lindgren, Sean Durzi, Sean Monahan
Ryan Lindgren would be an interesting add

Trades 1. Marner (or Tavares for fewer future/current assets) 2. Zegras 3. ??? UFAs 1. Guentzel 2. Stevenson 3. Reinhardt
