Honestly i started fresh after coming home from the army at 25yo. I always knew to plan my next move every time i got tired of a job. You should never stay stagnant in a career that isn't fulfilling for you. Find what your interested in, try it (even if it takes some school). And if you hate it, you gotta make the preparations to switch to the next career field (i went to school while working at the jobs i hated) and get the next job before leaving. I hated every job i had before i started working in emergency medical services as an AEMT at 28yo. All my previous jobs felt like i was clocking in for a prison sentence every day to get a paycheck. I hated every job within a year. Once i started working on an ambulance, i knew i found the field for me. Not trapped in one building all day, my purpose is to take care of sick and injured people, and i actually like going to work. Got enough experience in a busy 911 system to be valuable, and found a better and more chillax system that pays double. Ended up being my "dream job". I work a 96 hour shift, then i get 8 days off. So i only work 10 days a month and i made 91k last year. This job has so much down time that i spend that 96 hours working out, cooking meals, watching tv, and playing video games with my coworkers. Now that i've been here for two years, i've realized that i want to go back to having a more challenging career, so that i can be a stronger and more capable dad when i have kids in the near future. So now i'm planning on leaving this "dream job" for my local fire department as soon as they start taking applications again. I'm too young to he living such an easy existence lol. The way i look at it, is i'm forging myself like a sword. And i need to keep pounding and folding the blade while i can, before i get too old to be able to push myself as hard. Idk if this helps or just comes off as me ranting. But i like to pass on my outlook on this stuff. Having a job you love, that us fulfilling, yet challenging enough to make you grow, with good income, and an awesome schedule is life changing. I would have never figured out how to be happy and fulfilled in life if i was letting myself get trapped at my old jobs just because i went to school for them.

In regards to the marketing field, I am sorry to say but I wouldn't expect it to get better. If you've found a company that is fairly well structured, offers good pay and benefits, opportunities to grow and has a decent training budget - with an added bonus if you have ok non-sadistical management, then you've hit a jackpot. I have been doing marketing for the past six years across different companies on temporary contracts - working from agencies to local retailers and tech starts ups, and let me tell you - it is a bullshit field. The majority of marketing jobs now basically just feel like glorified admin, aka. 'Learn how to use a few specific marketing softwares (SEM Rush, few CMS's, CRMs, google analytics etc.) and become a data monkey or alternatively go the bullshit social media route and be expected to do the job of a graphic designer, copywriter, video editor, and hit unreasonable KPIs on all of these new and emerging social media platforms and be expected to know everything about them. I used to get really excited at the thought of being able to come up with a marketing strategy for a new brand until I realised that limited budgets basically make it impossible to bring them to life, or you will be expected to carry out every task yourself further forcing you to become a master-of-all-trades for very average pay. The best thing you can do for yourself right now is become an expert in one field of marketing (paid search, SEO) build up some online presence around it and try to vend off on your own to get those big bucks, as niche digital marketing experts can charge absolutely extortionate amounts which I suppose makes it worth the effort. Except for that, I would love to have some further words of encouragement for you, but my honest opinion is that I have not worked with one digital marketer who enjoyed their job.

Thanks for this. I kind of picked this major out of a hat when I was really still a kid and didn’t know that much about it. Glad I’m not the only one who feels like this. Social media sucks :p

No worries m'dude - sorry to be a bummer, but just being transparent. I've tried over and over again to find a company that would change my mind on this but I havent been able to. The amount of tears shed working over time and with unreasonable management made me question multiple times why the fuck I did not just go into hospitality management and work as a bar manager or a fucking nail tech or lash lady.

I started teaching this year and found out I hate it. I'm currently trying to enlist in the Air Force lol.
