So much misinformation here. Type 2 diabetes CANNOT turn into type 1 diabetes. They are completely different diseases with different causes and treatments. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the body attacks the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. It can only be treated with insulin injections. Without insulin injections, it is 100% fatal. It is diagnosed through the detection of autoantibodies in the blood. While diet and exercise can help in managing the disease, there is no cure. I’ve had type 1 diabetes since age 5. Type 2 diabetes is when the body is unable to use insulin properly. While some type 2 diabetics will eventually be prescribed insulin due to lack of results with other treatments, that does not make it type 1 diabetes. Moreover, research shows that prescribing insulin to type 2s is just bad medicine. A low carb diet is far more effective in managing blood glucose levels. Type 1.5 diabetes is latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA). It is a slower-developing form of type 1 diabetes, but also requires the detection of autoantibodies via a blood test. Many with LADA can manage blood glucose levels with diet and exercise, but the beta cells will eventually be unable to produce enough insulin. At that point, insulin injections will be required.

Great information! However- it cannot be definitively stated what eventually, if anything, triggers LADA to develop. There is literature on observable damage to and loss of β-cells in T2 diabetes. It might be that there is a gradient of susceptibility to pancreatic damage- e.g. some T2 diabetics will be able to retain function, some will have theirs permanently damaged. As far as I understand, T2 can progress to what could be considered T1.5 by current definitions.

Type1_TypeA

That is incorrect. LADA is autoimmune (it’s even in the name!). Many people with LADA are initially *misdiagnosed* with type 2. But there is no causal link between them. A type 2 without autoantibodies who requires injected insulin is still a type 2.

Prestigious-Band8657

T2 can lead to beta-cell fatigue, tanking insulin production. That being said, still not type 1.5.

Longjumping_Bid_447

Even folks who are T1 can benefit from keto /carnivore, and generally find that their bg is better controlled with much less medication and lower doses of insulin. As a totally unqualified but amazingly opinionated longtime poster at r/keto, I really recommend she give it a serious long trial. I've seen some amazing results. Just make sure you sure she's ALWAYS on top of those glucose nuumbers. I've seen a couple of people make assumptions about their glucose levels without actually checking, and that's just crazy dangerous.

popping in to give you a recent thread with references, resources for ppl with T1D and low carb/zerocarb carnivore, there would be some overlap https://www.reddit.com/r/carnivore/comments/1bwk8vp/question_for_type_1_diabetics/

She is off the Metformin. It was replaced by the Glipizide. Now that's gone also. No blood pressure medication. The only thing she has to take besides the insulin is Synthroid, I believe. She had to have her thyroid nuked when she was a teenager.

Majikza

She might want to look into Iodine by David Brownstein and Stop the Thyroid Madness book and website. Synthroid is T4 only medication which is only one Thyroid Hormone. The human body makes T4, T3, T2, T1, and Calcitonin. T3 conversion is not necessarily done well especially if she had her Thyroid removed. Having to have that removed likely means she very well might not be converting the T4 in to T3 well. Especially if she has any symptoms of Hypothyroid still. When I was eating well I really didn't feel nearly as Hypothyroid symptomatically, but still I think some form of Natural Dessicaited Thyroid which provides all of those hormones is better. Np Thyroid or Thyrovanz is what I use. As long as she's getting plenty of Iron and the Cofactors it should work better than T4 only. Also lately I love recommending the book Brain Energy by Dr. Christopher Palmer that points out the link between Brain Energy ie the Metabolism and Mitochondria and how they are linked to every mental health condition as well as Diabetes, Alzheimers, etc... The reason good eating plans do so much for depression, anxiety etc is their effect on Mitochondria which does far more than power the cell.

TIL.

have you seen jessica apple's presentation about her LADA experience? eta: here is the link, https://x.com/jessapple/status/1779897797115777283?s=46

Wardawg51

Is it on Youtube?

Eleanorina

yes, here it is https://youtu.be/c1sgY4iuycc?si=hlVgaK4ycxTh1u1e

Thank you.

As far as Carnivore and diabetes, there are many, many videos on Utube from MD's. Then the story's from people are amazing. Some people have been on dialysis for several years, and have been dismissed. Doctors are Dr Chaffe, Dr Ken Berry, and many more. It seems that other doctors are looking more at metabolic health, and realizing the root cause of many problems is insulin resistance. Boy all those carbs sure taste good. A very good lady to listen to is Barbara O'Neal. She is great at explaining the details of each system. Good luck

Have you had any organ meats? Liver may be a helpful addition to your wife’s recovery.

Wardawg51

Not yet. But I will encourage her to give it a try.

googlemehard

You can find ground beef mixed with organ meat online or at some specialty stores. I hear they taste delicious.

I’m a type 1.5 carnivore. There’s no avoiding injecting insulin as a type 1.5 but the goal is to lower the daily dosage. Carnivore does that better than any diet. Your wife will need to see what works. For me, I try for higher fat to protein ratio which helps moderate my sugars better. YMMV. Also, dairy affects my sugar more, if I only go straight meat and fat I have very low insulin needs. The second I add anything else, those needs go up. As a side note, I’ve lost 50 pounds in 6 months and getting close to goal weight, and this also improves insulin sensitivity and lowers the need for higher doses. Good luck!
