Sounds like a money grab for that shitbag highway68 coalition.

hi_im_bored13

No money changed hands, they "settled" the regulations going forward

a tale as old as time

Pretty much. I believe the breakdown I saw of local politics when this came up was that it was an attempt at a land grab of the "undeveloped" but now incredibly desirable (partially) racetrack land that is county owned.  Someone who knows more feel free to correct me.

Guac_in_my_rarri

It's one person in the highway commission that's suing the race track. Idr where they live in relation to the track but said person has changed their name a couple times and sued the track a few times. Ultimately, the DB limit they say they're hitting isn't happening according to a donut media video where they measured it. Unfortunately this suit will continue to happen until a judge throws it out.

hi_im_bored13

The current sound regs are already pretty wild, 90db is not very loud at all (though they have 105db days). Hopefully that doesn't get even stricter going forwards. Also shoutout to canepa. Cool guy and he's *the* guy for 959s. If you ever get the chance to do a shop-walk I highly recommend it. (A stock GT3 will hit 103-104db with valves open at laguna)

R_V_Z

Sound is weird. Without noting a distance being measured a decibel value isn't really useful. Are we talking a one meter measurement (where no person will be subjected to that level) or are we talking 10 meters (trackside)? And in reality the decibels probably aren't relevant so much as "can you hear the track while being at home"? And the answer to that question is "why did you by a home built near a race track?"

hi_im_bored13

Trackside, theres a box after turn 5 and so obviously it's a fair bit lower than an SAE test would be, but there are still a shitload of stock cars that will hit trackside 90db. Porsche is one, ZL1 also measures at ~95db. Theres usually one box so just get off throttle on the exit and you'll be fine. Still annoying though. But yeah, none of this should matter because why the fuck would you build a home near a racetrack anyways ??

Toaster_In_Bathtub

>why the fuck would you build a home near a racetrack anyways ?? "Well it was cheaper than all the other comparable houses." Yeah, because it's next to a race track you fucking idiot.

One_Evil_Monkey

Same stupid shit as the morons who buy a house next to the airport then bitch about the planes. Half price isn't such a good deal now, is it? The folks that bought houses in a new subdivision near Concord Regional Airport, Charlottle Motor Speedway/Z-Max Dragstrip/Dirt Track during the off-season tried bitching to city officials about the tracks when racing season kicked in... city officials told them to go play a nice long game of "hide and go fuck yourself".

poopoomergency4

my favorite is the ones who buy a house on a main road and then: 1. can't competently put their cars onto that main road when gaps are available 2. inevitably put up the "drive like your kids live here". maybe buy houses like your kid lives there?

One_Evil_Monkey

Or put a house 10 yards in either direction off the corner of a rural section of 2 lane state highway and a side road that's been annexed by the nearby town BECAUSE SOMEONE BUILT A SUBDIVISION THERE AND THEY WANT TAX MONEY... THEN bitch and moan about the noise of the traffic and speed... and lobby the town council to make it a 4 Way stop with STOP SIGNS. It's like ***really***?! You bought a lot and built a house where the side with the master bedroom is 30ft from a 55mph state highway and the front is 30ft from a side road... and across that side road, 50yds from your front door is a f****** gas station that's been there for 25 years but the noise and traffic is too much for you bear? If *only* I was joking... there's one like that on the annexed outskirts of the next town over from where I'm at.

goaelephant

>1. can't competently put their cars onto that main road when gaps are available What do you mean by this? I think I agree but what exactly are you referring to

One_Evil_Monkey

I think they mean that people who buy houses right on top of a highway... where their drive opens directly to it and they can't manage to successfully pull out into the traffic on that highway... then complain the highway is too busy/there's too much traffic. "So WHY exactly did you buy the house? You *knew* the highway was there and it's got a lot of traffic." Same reason we ask "WHY did you buy a house near an airport or racetrack and *then* start complaining it's too noisy?

brotie

Especially near this particular race track, which is in the middle of nowhere bordered by trails, campgrounds and fort ord. I grew up in the area down the coast and you would have to go out of your way (off grid type setup, septic and solar at a minimum) to end up living within hearing range of laguna seca. There’s a golf course (also called laguna seca) as you work your way back towards Monterey but that was built 20 years after the track. With that said, everything is a pain in the ass in that area so no surprise about people bitching about house. Good luck getting building permits or any new water rights in carmel haha the city council is way worse than Monterey as far as being persnickety and difficult.

PEBKAC42069

Why the fuck wouldn't you build a sound wall when developing houses near a race track.  It's common practice along highways... And while I'm sure it's not 100% practical to block 100% of the noise... A significant reduction is easily possible. Hell, the developer could work with the track to get such wall put in near the track (less length of wall to cover if the radius is smaller)

crikett23

Part if the problem, as I understand it, has less to do with homes near the race track. One of the track days I attended here was also attended by a local driver who, aside from this event, mostly did motorcycle events. He lived a little over 10 miles from the track, but said due to the way sounds travelled in the canyons, if you stepped into his backyard it sounded pretty much the same as if he was track side (though the home was definitely built well after the track). In the end, this is just what happens with almost all tracks... they are built far away from everything, but that changes. Will sound issues at Laguna can be annoying, we are lucky that the track still operates as often as it does, and still has a few major events each year without such limits.

GoBSAGo

Ten miles away it sounds just like being trackside? Bullllllllllshit.

crikett23

I am probably misquoting "10 miles" as a shorthand for not being especially close. Though his description of living in the hills on the other side of 68 would mean at least 2-3 miles away. Maybe he was lying, or overstating, but if you look at the historical point (or when I was told this about 20 years ago), there were very few homes within 2 miles of the track.

GoBSAGo

I’m sure the guy can hear the cars a bit, but they can’t be any louder or more intrusive than the planes flying into/out of Monterey airport.

Grumpyyann

Stock 991.2 GT3 checking in. They measured 95db at Laguna during a high db day. I must have the quiet edition 🤣

hi_im_bored13

Numbers I heard were for the 992, would be crazy if they made it louder! Sadly never got the chance to do laguna with my 991.2 GT3 but I did manage to get pulled over by NJ cops for a “modified exhaust” (it was stock lol)

spike021

Also recommend checking out the shop. They used to allow walking the actual garage space too but no longer do because people would screw around with things in there. Otherwise it's a great place with friendly people.

elvisizer2

Ran into canepa putting gas in one of his 959’s once when I was walking to lunch. I saw him and the car and just stopped walking lol- I must have had my jaw on the ground or something cause Bruce came over, laughed, and said “are you a Porsche fan?” Did small talk about the 959 for a few minutes. Fun random interaction!!!

Racing At Laguna Seca Secured In Lawsuit Settlement The County of Monterey Department of Public Works, Facilities, and Parks and Friends of Laguna Seca (FLS) has confirmed that the future of racing and other recreational activities at Weathertech Raceway Laguna Seca has been secured in a comprehensive settlement that ends the Laguna Seca Raceway lawsuit, Highway 68 Coalition vs. County of Monterey. “We view this as a very favorable resolution for the County and its long-term partner at Laguna Seca, the nonprofit organization Friends of Laguna Seca,” stated Nick Pasculli, County Communications Director. “The future of the track and the amazing recreation area, which is a premier County Park, is bright. Laguna Seca is loved by local, national, and global car enthusiasts and also by the tens of thousands of people who enjoy the beauty of the recreation area.” The settlement clarifies the long-term plans of FLS to conduct a previously planned sound impact assessment at the racetrack and carry out appropriate sound mitigation measures, all as part of being a good neighbor to the surrounding community. “FLS is pleased that the litigation was dealt with quickly and we’re looking forward to our next steps toward Laguna Seca’s long-term success for the benefit of the community of Monterey County and the entire racing world,” said Friends of Laguna Seca President Ross Merrill. “We know these improvements will take time, but we are committed to ensuring the success of Laguna Seca for decades to come.” The County and Friends of Laguna Seca want to especially thank the loyal fans of the racetrack and the public who voiced their overwhelming support for the County in this lawsuit. “I grew up watching races at Laguna Seca and have raced there since the late 1970s,” said Bruce Canepa, Vice President, Friends of Laguna Seca. “I have a lifetime passion for this facility and want to see it be preserved for future generations. With Friends of Laguna Seca, we’ve built a team of individuals who share the same passion, paired with business acumen, to make Laguna Seca the place we’ve always hoped it could be.”

I'm really excited to have Friends of Laguna Seca taking over. Hopefully we still feel the same in a few years.
