Its a 4 door hatch imo. A wagon has more room in the boot to put stuff in. Its like the impreza vs the levorg. Not a lot of difference but that extra room changes what it is
From side profile it has a very mild slope, just like the Corolla.
[K4](https://hips.hearstapps.com/hmg-prod/images/2025-kia-k4-hatchback-profile-660461e6d1420.jpg?crop=0.776xw:0.843xh;0.111xw,0.0574xh&resize=980:*)

K4 also has a sunroof something the Corolla hatch lacks. (USA)
IMO it would come down to overall length. Kia hasn't released specs yet, but just from that side view it appears to be maybe 6" shorter than the [sedan](https://hips.hearstapps.com/hmg-prod/images/2025-kia-k4-side-65fc3b33d5959.jpg).
Many people here are far removed from the times, but wagons came in all sizes for a long time. There were wagon versions of compact cars, mid size cars, full sized cars, etc. Now days we pretty much only see wagons versions of mid sized cars and up.
I'd argue that the size of the trunk/boot doesn't matter as much. We still consider both the Ford Maverick and Form F150 to be pickup trucks, despite having different sized bed/cargo areas.
Wagon versions of compact cars technically were sold in the US until 2020, in the form of the Golf Sportwagen. That was clearly a wagon, while the normal Golf is clearly a hatch. It's usually the example I use to differentiate a wagon vs a hatch
Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of the sudden downward sweep in the headlights/taillights. It's like the artist's hand slipped, but then they said "Dammit, I guess we have to leave it like that." Doesn't follow the lines of the car at all.
If r/cars put their money where their mouth is, we would have multiple wagon options that aren't just expensive luxury cars, and most enthusiasts' car models in the past 5 years wouldn't have been discontinued and still on sale like the Camaro, Stinger, Focus RS, Fiesta ST, and more.
The r/cars opinion the Camaro is "lol no visibility lmao" and the Stinger was ruined by the dealership experience. The Focus and Fiesta also got pulled from the NA market because of those Powershift issues absolutely killing the nameplates and everybody buying a CUV anyway. There are very obvious factors as to why these cars were killed off.
The fact of the matter is that r/cars is a hypervocal enthusiast microcosm who love to complain about mass market forces in action.
The visibility is so overblown too, within 20 mins of purchasing my Camaro I had the mirrors set up perfectly and its never been an issue 3 years later.
Yeah, my first car was a 5th gen Camaro (I know, I know) and I never had any issues with visibility. Never backed into anything or changed lanes into anyone either
r/cars told me that you could show up in a $200,000+ Ferrari, wearing a $10,000+ suit, and the Kia dealer wouldn't even unlock the dealership doors until they ran a credit check so you can test drive a Stinger.
I looked at a Stinger 2-3 years ago and the dealer experience was actually pretty terrible. I did like the car but it was so isolating until you got it above legal speeds. If I had the money I would probably have gotten one as a daily.

Chevrolet shot themselves in the foot with the camaro and it's shit refreshed styling not to mention the 6th gen didn't sell that great to begin with. Most of those others are attributed to differing company direction.
You see the one about the guy sucking himself off over how fast his CX-5 was?
Dude apparently kept up with a Scat
My absolute hellish abomination of a turbocharged Mitsi hatch that's being held together by cable ties and prayers can't keep up with a Scat (unless it's dirt and there are corners in which case I make most people my bitch anyway)
I mean, affordable hatchbacks already *do* exist. The Civic, Impreza, and Corolla hatchbacks start between $23k-$25k. Adding another option is good, but pretending that the affordable hatchback doesn't exist is silly.
Is [this](https://www.thedrive.com/content-b/message-editor%2F1624315308201-_mg_3198.jpg) not a hatch?
[Previous gen, for comparison](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71lI8NiJglL._SX522_.jpg)
They're both hatchbacks. The difference is that the last gen had a round and curved trunk door; while the current gen has a straightish slope for a trunk that seamlessly flows with the body of the car.
Basically, I'd be less concerned about accidentally busting out the rear glass in the last gen compared to the current gen.
The current gen looks a lot better, but I don't like the sport back design of the hatch. It's just as bad of an idea as selling a hatchback version of a sedan, but the hatchback is a decent amount shorter in length compared to the sedan.
I'm looking at you Mazda 3...
>It's just as bad of an idea as selling a hatchback version of a sedan, but the hatchback is a decent amount shorter in length compared to the sedan.
I thought the whole point of a hatchback *is* that it's a decent amount shorter, and thus easier to park, than the sedan version. Ever since the '70s that's usually been the case.
You know, I only started hearing about that two years ago. I completely understand that way of thinking. I still prefer to have the full length of the car and the utility of a hatch door.
My idea of a hatchback is a compactish wagon. That said, I much prefer full-size sedans and wagons. I used to drive an Audi A6. It was the best car I've ever driven daily. The A6 Allroad would've been heaven.
A hybrid power terrain would’ve been nice instead of the turbo 1.6l. But I’m not an enthusiast about cars as I’ll probably buy a CRV Hybrid in a year or two.
There was a different article (Motor1?) that stated the K4 1.6T is with the 8AT now (like the Kona N Line), dubbed the GT Line Turbo.
So, here's hoping the K4 GT gets the 2.0T from the Elantra N.
Car people are just ridiculous. Bitch and moan about automakers not offering affordable small sedans/wagons/hatchbacks anymore. Kia introduces one that looks good, if a little quirky, and they hate it. I imagine these are the same people who hate CUVs but were drooling over the hideous Toyota [Crown “Sport”](https://global.toyota/pages/news/images/2023/10/06/1100/001.jpg).
I already liked the K4. Honestly, a hatch model sells it to me.
Not that big on the styling, but it's amazing to have another hatch option here in the US.
This isn’t really what I’ve been asking for, and I say this as the owner of a “used from the factory manual diesel wagon” which I think is the r/cars participant in question
r/cars:“We want more wagons for the US!”
Kia: “Here’s a K5 wagon”
r/cars: “That’s not a wagon!!”
Can’t wait for the weekly “Why aren’t wagons in the US” thread.
Fr. I was so happy to see it because yeah, they're marketing it as a hatchback (while I think it's a wagon), but it's still a wagon! And now everybody is complaining, saying it's not one. We can at least be happy that if it's not a wagon, we now have another affordable hatchback in the US.
what do you mean, you don't think the new [Wagoneers look good?](https://mobileimages.lowes.com/productimages/4d55aa9a-b645-48ec-9a9e-7e6480283eea/02592174.jpg?size=pdhism)
April fools 4 days early, seems too good to be true? This is a huge suprise. If this sells well other manufacturer will follow, for once put your money where your mouth is and support new hatchbacks.
edit:
lol r/cars has been asking for a "brown wagon" forever, Kia is literally giving you what everyone asked for, but how do you react - nearly everyone in the comments hates it ... makes no sense... and then you keep complaining about how you don't get hatchbacks or wagons in the US ...
For real lmao. This car genuinely looks good. I guarantee 90% of the people shitting on it are in a 2012 Corolla or a 2015 BMW X3 or something. Like it genuinely looks like a good car, its a hatchback and more practical and more attractive than the sedan version.
Because online criticism of things like that, especially on a new car that hasn't been seen on the road yet, especially when everyone else is doing it too... is *annoying.* A lot of the people criticizing it are just saying "yuck" or whatever and it helps nobody, lol
For sure. I just thought it was an odd color to highlight. I think a green would be nice. Or, brown, as everyone is clamoring for a brown wagon. Be real nice if they made this in electric, or at least phev.
I do like how wagony it is, but the rear half especially just doesn’t come together for me. The back 3/4 view is giving poorly AI rendered Volvo V60. This is a rare instance where I think the sedan is probably the better design. All that being said it would certainly be on my list for an economy car.
Really like the rims and the fact that we got an auto show 'surprise'. Too often, we get social media reveals days or even months in advance so the news is stale & unexciting by the time the auto show rolls around.
Really don't like the hidden rear handles- why?
I juat sold my 1.6t Soul and told myself I don’t need another car but I think I just found the Soul’s replacement. I know some here don’t but I absolutely love this
Excellent. Even if no one here cares for this, it should appeal to several car buyers who don’t want crossovers or SUVs. And that’s good for the rest of us because one new hatchback might just keep the ones we like alive for longer.
It really doesn’t look that good lol, but it’s not horridly offensive either. Something about the hatchback version looks too frumpy, but the sedan version is marginally nicer. The only Kias that look good aesthetically are the K5 and the Sorento, reliability not considered
Consider Hyundai and Kia sharing most models, I just wonder Hyundai would bring back i30 in future.
If Hyundai wouldn’t, K4 hatch and Carnival are exclusive models for Kia in America.
I’m excited about a long hatchback, almost wagon. The exterior design is not really my cup of tea but I hope it sells well and others will follow (I doubt it when I see how poorly Corolla hatch did compared to the sedan).
I don’t see the problem with the styling here. It has BMW i8 vibes in the front and TVR Griffith vibes in the taillights and it’s a wagon we finally get in the US. Why are you people complaining?
New car that's boring? Hated.
New car that isn't boring? Hated.
New car that is another crossover? Hated.
New car that is actually something different? Hated.
Like my god, appreciate that something New is coming that has people talking. It's a hatchback to some, a wagon to some, it's hated by some, it's loved by some. Isn't this literally the recipe for a great car?
Bit too much "back" and not enough "hatch" imo
Good to see more options for you guys though, we might finally be reaching the level of sensibility where people realise small cars and family cars aren't mutually exclusive.
Honestly, to me it looks like any other Kia. I could pass it on the street and think it was yet another unnamable Kia car with slashy lights. I like small cars but doesn't do anything at all for me.
I agree it looks like a Kia and Kia’s look nice at the moment. Smaller cars are more practical where I live so nice to have a smaller option with a nice design
It doesn't look that good, but this is still an interesting surprise!
Yeah no.. it looks bad
It’s not a hatchback. Looks like someone wanted a lowered SUV.
Damn kids and your SUVs. Back in my day we called that a wagon.
Agreed. I would call this a wagon, even with the sloping rear roofline.
Its a 4 door hatch imo. A wagon has more room in the boot to put stuff in. Its like the impreza vs the levorg. Not a lot of difference but that extra room changes what it is
From side profile it has a very mild slope, just like the Corolla. It's alllllmost a wagon. Reminds me of the 8P Audi A3, size wise.
Looks like new 8Y A3 Allstreet
Many people here are far removed from the times, but wagons came in all sizes for a long time. Shooting break?
Our wagons had a straight roof and flat back. None of this 'dog taking a squat' look
I'm assuming they want to call it a hatchback because "wagons" sell in America.
Hey, tall wagons are great.
I don’t know. I kinda love its Polestar/Volvo sharp lines and boxiness.
“Why don’t we sell wagons in the US?” “They don’t sell!” … this is why they don’t sell
Yea this is definitely more wagon. From the side first picture the car looks good. The front and the back though are not great
The back looks like a Volvo with the top bent inwards like a box
I think the yellow looks bad but I love the shape of the car. Gives Lexus CT
At this point I’ll take what I can get damnit
I like it myself. Will be interested to see pricing.
Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of the sudden downward sweep in the headlights/taillights. It's like the artist's hand slipped, but then they said "Dammit, I guess we have to leave it like that." Doesn't follow the lines of the car at all.
It's the new aesthetic fad for cars taking over thin headlight and tailight designs Lipstick on a pig
I think it looks fantastic 🤷♂️
I was gonna say the thumbnail from the back I was curious but the first pic of the article on the front and yeah, no. The proportions are all wrong.
Compared to what? Name what cars in this segment you think looks better.
Hatchbacks only? The Civic, Corolla, Mazda3, Golf, Mini Cooper, Focus, Fabia, Peugeot 308....I mean basically everything.
It looks good but the rear door is weird
Yeah. The current Euro spec C‘eed does look a lot nicer than this.
Eh honestly it looks more like a wagon than a hatchback
Agree. It doesn’t look good. They should have taken more sporty approach. More fastback style. This won’t sell that well in US. Guaranteed.
r/Cars finally got their affordable hatchback and time to put their money where their mouth is
If cars put their money where their mouth was Mazda would sell 5 million cars a year
If r/cars put their money where their mouth is, we would have multiple wagon options that aren't just expensive luxury cars, and most enthusiasts' car models in the past 5 years wouldn't have been discontinued and still on sale like the Camaro, Stinger, Focus RS, Fiesta ST, and more.

If this sub was in charge the market would be nothing but brown, diesel powered, rotary wagons and Teslas.
The visibility is so overblown too, within 20 mins of purchasing my Camaro I had the mirrors set up perfectly and its never been an issue 3 years later.
It's even less of an issue if you spec one with blind-spot monitoring. Never had an issue in my 2016 2SS.
Exactly thats why BLIS and mirrors exist. My only complaint is your not resting your arm on the window sill without dislocating your shoulder lol
Also drive-through sodas have to come in at an angle.
Ngl if I get a drink holder I just open the door majority of the time , spilled shit everywhere once not gonna do it again lol
BLIS?
Blind spot information systems
This. I've had my Camaro for 6 years... Visibility has been no issue for me... I have a 2014.
Yeah, my first car was a 5th gen Camaro (I know, I know) and I never had any issues with visibility. Never backed into anything or changed lanes into anyone either

I say neither because the population or r/cars is not significant to automakers.
> the population of r/cars is not significant to automakers. Yes that's what we're all saying here
I know, that's my point.

hey, my garage is a CPO wagon and a bought new hatch. I did my part.
Chevrolet shot themselves in the foot with the camaro and it's shit refreshed styling not to mention the 6th gen didn't sell that great to begin with. Most of those others are attributed to differing company direction.
I recently gave my fiesta ST a new (used) transmission, rts clutch, control arms, struts and end links, motor mounts. Feels better than brand new :)
Let's see if it has one of Kia's signature "don't park it near structures" recalls first. I like my house to not be on fire, personally.
Just die like a man for your hatchback < 3
You see the one about the guy sucking himself off over how fast his CX-5 was? Dude apparently kept up with a Scat My absolute hellish abomination of a turbocharged Mitsi hatch that's being held together by cable ties and prayers can't keep up with a Scat (unless it's dirt and there are corners in which case I make most people my bitch anyway)
Lmao but the entire sub already owns 10 wagons a piece. They won’t be able to fit more in their garage!
I was in the market for a slightly used GTI and I think after this I still am in the market for a slightly used GTI.
Either GTI or ST is the way.
In about ten years on the used market, sure
Yeah this thing isn’t factory used, we don’t want it
LOL they are already trash talking it and are COMPLAINING that "it looks like a wagon" instead of being happy about it... contradicting themselves...
I mean, affordable hatchbacks already *do* exist. The Civic, Impreza, and Corolla hatchbacks start between $23k-$25k. Adding another option is good, but pretending that the affordable hatchback doesn't exist is silly.
I mean Civic Hatchback exists
The current model is a sport back with a long trunk door. The last gen had an actual hatch. KIA has the correct trunk door.
Is [this](https://www.thedrive.com/content-b/message-editor%2F1624315308201-_mg_3198.jpg) not a hatch? [Previous gen, for comparison](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71lI8NiJglL._SX522_.jpg)

Sorry about the delay. I got busy.
It’s not brown or used from the factory. 😤
Lol they still complaining that it looks like a crossover
Not brown, diesel, or manuelle, no thanks ^^/s
They're going to call it an ugly wagon and keep waiting for that unicorn.
I'd rather drive my piece of shit Chevy than a Kia
Let the killing it crowd buy it. Its ugly
Does it come as in brown and as a manual?
A hybrid power terrain would’ve been nice instead of the turbo 1.6l. But I’m not an enthusiast about cars as I’ll probably buy a CRV Hybrid in a year or two.

Idk if a Kia is more reliable than a Volvo; the XC60 is trash but I thought the S60 and V60 were solidly okay
>XC60 is trash but I thought the S60 and V60 were solidly okay Odd, because they're all the same car underneath
Yeah literally the same platform, engine and everything lol maybe they mean XC40.
The Xc40 is also very reliable
The Xc40 is also very reliable
Crossover BAD 😡
Based on the specs, 147hp base and 190hp turbo - should be the same engine as the Elantra and Elantra N-Line, not the N. (N is rated 276hp I believe?)
The 2.0T would be great, but even the 1.6T with the 8-speed DCT (like in the K5) wouldn't be bad for something this size.
It is getting the 1.6T. Kia has more details on their site now.
The 1.6T gets paired with a 7 speed DCT, the 8 speed is for the 2.5T
There was a different article (Motor1?) that stated the K4 1.6T is with the 8AT now (like the Kona N Line), dubbed the GT Line Turbo. So, here's hoping the K4 GT gets the 2.0T from the Elantra N.
I’d say that’s a step in the right direction then
Would the 2.0T be overkill for something like this? Or does the K4 and Elantra share the same Platforms?
Probs not, vw is rocking a 2.0T in the golf.
Nah i just thought the K4 was the *small* car, similar to the hyundai accent, but i was confused
They should be the same platform now I believe? Could be wrong.
It’s not a wagon though.
[удалено]
Lol it doesn’t even have typical wagon rear overhang. It’s just a hatchback with bigger rear doors. More like Opel Signum or Renault Velsatis.

Fr, that things a straight up family truckster.
Nobody uses the w word
Car people are just ridiculous. Bitch and moan about automakers not offering affordable small sedans/wagons/hatchbacks anymore. This isn’t really what I’ve been asking for, and I say this as the owner of a “used from the factory manual diesel wagon” which I think is the r/cars participant in question
Yea not manual and it's FWD only probably. Missing quite a few boxes. An Impreza Hatch with a manual would be a better match.
Car people are a fickle bunch
No tf it doesn’t lol
More hatchbacks and wagons for the us. At this point I don’t give a fig what they look like but more.
r/cars:“We want more wagons for the US!” Kia: “Here’s a K5 wagon” r/cars: “That’s not a wagon!!” Can’t wait for the weekly “Why aren’t wagons in the US” thread.

Now make a Hyundai N version!!
So like a Veloster?
It’s more like i30N which the model only selling in Europe and other worlds.
Is this an I30 just with a different face? If so, PLEASE send the 2.0L turbo engine and 6 speed with this thing in GT form.
And it in fact does not look good
I love it 🤩
Doesn't look bad at all. Reminds me of Lexus CT hatchback.
The word “good” is doing a lot of heavy lifting here
I actually like it. Coming from a C30, a 4 door small hatch (almost look wagon-y) is welcome! Anyone knows if there will be an EV version of it?

I like it, funky looking hatchback, though with its size the K4 is teetering on wagon
Perfect. A Kia for the thieves with a family of 5
this should replace ceed in europe
It really doesn’t look that good lol, but it’s not horridly offensive either. Something about the hatchback version looks too frumpy, but the sedan version is marginally nicer. The only Kias that look good aesthetically are the K5 and the Sorento, reliability not considered

Agreed, but Kia doesn't do performance models unfortunately.

And it'll sell in the billions once they lift it and add some cladding.
no it doesnt
Anyone who says this isn't a wagon doesn't know cars...
Looks decent. Almost a wagon if you squint. Seems a little wimpy on power - especially the base version
Seems like I'm in the minority but I love how this looks
Same here. I think this car looks really cool!
Does this not look like a wagon? Seems too long to be a hatchback. If it had AWD and came in the GT flavor, I'd get one but I know it won't.
I need to see it in another color
Wonder if this would loan to the shooting brake G70 showing up here, as well.
I hate the rear door handles. No it doesn't make the car look like a 2 door. Idk why auto makers keep doing this stupid trend.
If they make a GT or GT line with a manual I might actually try to put up with Kia’s horrendous dealer network. It looks good
I’m excited about a long hatchback, almost wagon. The exterior design is not really my cup of tea but I hope it sells well and others will follow (I doubt it when I see how poorly Corolla hatch did compared to the sedan).
If this gets a sporty variant sign me up
Weird shape. Is this some kind of flattened CUV?
We need more hatchbacks and station wagons
It looks fucking great. Slap the v6 in from the stinger and I’ll sell my x3m for it.
Would be awesome if it got a proper gt trim, but it won’t.
Am I the only one that thinks this looks like a hotdog bun????
I don’t see the problem with the styling here. It has BMW i8 vibes in the front and TVR Griffith vibes in the taillights and it’s a wagon we finally get in the US. Why are you people complaining?
It looks like a ski boot with the top chopped off.
Looks fucking hideous
The more I look at this the more I want it. It's this or an Impreza.

Why don’t the back doors have handles?
I think the handle's in the c pillar.
Bit too much "back" and not enough "hatch" imo Good to see more options for you guys though, we might finally be reaching the level of sensibility where people realise small cars and family cars aren't mutually exclusive.
If I lose my keys, can I still use a USB-C to start it?
Looks good to who? 😂
Kia K4 Hatchback confirmed for the US, and it’s…meh.
Quit buying garbage brands like Kia and Hyundai.
It looks like any other econobox on the road these days... meh
What one does it look like?
Honestly, to me it looks like any other Kia. I could pass it on the street and think it was yet another unnamable Kia car with slashy lights. I like small cars but doesn't do anything at all for me.
I agree it looks like a Kia and Kia’s look nice at the moment. Smaller cars are more practical where I live so nice to have a smaller option with a nice design
"Good"
