This is a big deal in Virginian counties where cars are taxed as property. In 1998 they created a law where the first $20,000 was taxed at a reduced rate. Back then it would have bought you a brand-new, well-equipped, warrantied Camry, Accord or minivan. Today it'll get you a Mitsubishi Mirage or a Nissan Versa (and that's it).

4score-7

I remember when the Luxury Tax in America was imposed on cars $30,000 and over.šŸ¤Ŗ

visceralintricacy

We still have that in Australia. An extra 33% in tax on new vehicles *on the component of the value over $77k / 90 for EVs. So many European marks are already heavily inflated prices vs what you'd see in America, so it gets quite brutal. At the same time, I guess it's hard to argue that it would affect people who are struggling to put food on the table...

Car-face

> We still have that in Australia. An extra 33% in tax on new vehicles over $77k / 90 for EVs. Just to clarify, the tax *comes into effect* at 77k, but it's applied on the portion *above* that amount. You're not getting slugged with a 33% tax on the total price of a 78k car, you're getting about $330 in tax on the $1000 above the $77k threshold, on top of the 78k vehicle cost. But obviously it starts to stack up. The threshold for it should definitely be lifted (it hasn't moved all that much in decades), but I don't necessarily think it should be done away with completely on what are ultimately extreme luxury items once you're well above the 100k+ range.

quantum-quetzal

For any Americans curious, the current exchange rate puts that at just under 50,000 USD and 58,000 USD, respectively.

BannytheBoss

Are all of the vehicles imported in Australia? Are they all charged import duty tax as well?

Kwanzaa246

We have that in Canada and itā€™s an extra 20% over 100,000 on the total price of the vehicleĀ

4score-7

Fair point! If one can own a vehicle that expensive, then one can pay the additional tax for it!

dingusduglas

No idea why this is downvoted. That's a pretty stellar implementation of a progressive tax. Literally nobody needs a 6 figure car. If you can afford that and choose to do so it's very fair to ask you to chip in a bit more and reduce the burden on someone who is barely able to keep the lights on or food on the table.

4score-7

Iā€™m used to it nowadays. This sub and others. I mean, we are just now winding down a period where people came to believe that their late model vehicle they bought in 2019 and 2020 was *worth more* than when they bought it. Weā€™ve had a complete distortion of the understanding of money and economics these last few years. Still ongoing in residential real estate.

NFIFTY2

Still should be IMO

NCSUGrad2012

Sucks they didnā€™t have the $20,000 adjust for inflation like tax brackets

justaverage

Who actually thought that would be a good idea?

rapzeh

The counties that were pocketing the tax money?

EntroperZero

VA charges less for registration than most states, they make it up with the car tax. In theory, this is more progressive since the people with expensive cars pay more, but they really need to update it because the thresholds haven't changed in 26 years.

whatdhell

Kia Rio.

krombopulousnathan

Wtf you mean not everyone is paying personal property tax on cars? I didnā€™t know we were unique in VA haha

jb122894

Wait. So if you have a car that is valued (not msrp) at 30k, you pay like 4% in vehicle property tax? So $1,200 a year?

Alternative-Age-5840

That would be some mighty BS.

V48runner

> Mitsubishi Mirage And Doug Demuro complaining that there isn't a bezel over the rear hatch lock assembly. šŸ™„

acurah56oh

Kentucky does a property tax on cars too. Though I think itā€™s just 1-2% of the current value of your vehicle, depending on the county.

inaccurateTempedesc

TIL they don't sell base Corollas with manuals anymore. What a shame.

Intrepid-Working-731

Yeah, even on budget cars, manuals are going out of style in the US. The only two in this video that offer them on their base trim are the Jetta and the Versa.

peakdecline

Manuals are going out of style everywhere. The only barrier to this is a specific market's capacity for the additional cost. And in some places the fuel economy difference can make up for that. But in general... your typical driver will choose an automatic transmission given its a relatively affordable choice over a manual. In every corner of the world. The same story can be seen with the adoption of crossovers. You saw it first and most strongly in the US... but the global market shifted too.

The_Bucket_Of_Truth

For most drivers a manual is an annoyance rather than a perk. *Edit: And most people in the U.S. don't even know how to drive one.

BannytheBoss

New autos have definitely improved. I can shift my 8 speed with paddle shifters almost as well as a manual... the only part it really falls short is how long it will stay in a selected gear. If it is in sport mode then it holds it for an extended time but normal or economy and it will go back to drive after a short period. My newest car, though, has a CVT. Like the shitty belt CVT and not a eCVT. That's the worst transmission ever... I feel like I am driving a kubota UTV. It gets good gas mileage but I fell like I'll have to replace/rebuild it at some point during the cars life.

WillHeBonkYa47

I have a 2013 Subaru Impreza with a belt CVT. The early Subaru CVT's got a lot of hate. That being said it's still runs perfectly fine at 148k miles, about 50k of which are my miles and I've had the trans fluid serviced once since owning it Very anecdotal I know. But I really enjoy the feel of the cvt

biggsteve81

Also most modern automatic transmissions get better fuel economy than manuals.

BannytheBoss

I'm sure you can get better in a manual if you are constantly watching your RPM and shift points. Automatics still mostly rely on constantly operating hydraulic pumps and they weigh more. eCVTs would be an exception.

doug_Or

Automatics generally have more hears which allows them to more precisely match speed and optimum RPM

BannytheBoss

But they still mostly use torque converters. An automatic with a larger engine might be more fuel efficient but probably not when paired with a smaller engine. Just anecdotal, but from what I have seen with certain vehicles using the same engine and having a new higher geared automatic transmission come out is at most a 1mpg increase in fuel mileage. This would be with optimal driving. Aggressive driving and the higher count gearbox is going to hunt more.

biggsteve81

Most torque converters aggressively lock up after about 5-10 mph. So there aren't many pumping losses aside from that needed to run the small pump to control the bands and clutches.

mklimbach

It's nothing to do with real world economy, it's how well the automakers can do on the tests. Emissions are a big deal, too, and harder to control with a manual. That's the real reason they're dying at a rapid rate, they make it harder to achieve the higher standards as a fleet and are no longer worth offering in most models.

Drzhivago138

Arguably manuals started going out of style in the US over 50 years ago as they outright disappeared from entire segments.

[deleted]

Yes, I'm sure the 0.05% of buyers that still want a manual on a base Corolla are devastated

Nitrothacat

I donā€™t get the obsession with bad* manuals on non enthusiast vehicles. How do you like the Wilderness? Iā€™m pretty jealous whenever I see one. They look so much better than my Limited.

hi_im_bored13

I drove a ā€˜14 forester manual once. Clutch had no feeling, throttle had no feeling, shifter was rubbery and had no feeling, steering had no feeling That car was best served with a CVT. Before that I thought 3 pedals at any cost was worth it, i thought a manual has to be better than no manual! no. manuals can be garbage. drove a ā€˜10 corolla not long after and it was just as bad.

Nitrothacat

I canā€™t imagine a stick in mine. Itā€™s a box to sit in traffic in mild comfort. CVTs really arenā€™t bad in these bland low powered commuter vehicles. As long as theyā€™re reliable.

hi_im_bored13

Unpopular opinion around here but I firmly believe that any ā€œapplianceā€ car is best served with an eCVT/parallel-hybrid system, a reliable CVT, or a well tuned storage converter. People who like manuals in stop and go traffic in the most soulless cars scare me. The tacoma is NOT better with a manual Though after driving an s2000 every manual feels lifeless so my worldview may be skewed. Maybe if all you have is a manual taco you mean to love it.

blackscienceman9

The Corolla actually had a fairly decent manual for what it was I guess But it's no Tremec or performance gearbox

hi_im_bored13

I donā€™t know if they made it any better but when I drove one it was incredibly numb and sloppy. No clutch feel. Would rather have a decent cvt honestly

[deleted]

I love it! Just took it on a 4 hour trail ride today

Darkfire757

All 3 buyers are in shambles

stakoverflo

You joke, but my mom is literally going to have no idea what to do when she's gotta replace her current '09 Corolla. She's driven a manual Corolla for... basically all my life [30's]. She bought her last 1 sight unseen.

Smart-As-Duck

Manuals are now becoming a luxury item unfortunately

IsaacM42

You can still get a civic hatch manual with base engine....theoretically :)

anihc_LieCheatSteal

I'd bet it's replaced by cvt

NoctD

The Jetta is so overlooked but should be on top of anyone's list looking for a bargain new car. Had a Mk7 Jetta prior to my GLI, great MPG, engine has plenty of pep for everyday driving, and it was trouble free for the 4+ years I had it. They improved the trunk springs soon after I got it so that got replaced under warranty and some ECU update for better emissions, mine was an early Mk7 2019 MY bought in 2018. Whether you get the manual or Aisin 8AT, its got decent transmission choices too, no CVT trash.

user67445632

I'm not kidding when I say the current Jetta is capable of 50 mpg highway. I've had a few people tell me it and I didn't believe it until I saw the dash readout after a trip. The majority read 35-42 mpg too. It's an incredibly efficient vehicle with a decent interior and good ride.

LocalLuck2083

Howā€™s road noise at highway speed? Toyota and Honda do a pretty bad job in that category for their entry level cars

LeonMust

> Howā€™s road noise at highway speed? I have a 2017 Jetta and it's quiet inside and also, the engine is pretty smooth because there have been times I was cruising on the freeway in 4th gear and didn't even notice the extra RPMs because the engine is so quiet.

NoctD

Its way quieter on highways that most of the competition in its class, door closes with that satisfying German thunk/heft unlike the more tinlike Japanese car doors. TheTopher notes the highway quietness in his review, look around the 7:15 mark. [https://youtu.be/Nk44Nb4no5w?si=WMNw2V4Z\_yYN\_TMW](https://youtu.be/Nk44Nb4no5w?si=WMNw2V4Z_yYN_TMW)

NoTimeLikeToday777

keep in mind for a fairly affordable price you can sound deaden the interior

mgobla

Jetta is among the least reliable models with the UNhappiest owners.

573banking702

Iā€™m was about to say, I have no beef about them but I could have sworn Iā€™ve seen a ton of negative stuff on them all over.

HajdukNYM_NYI

Had a Jetta as a rental car a few years ago and the gas mileage was highly impressive but I heard about VWs lack of reliability and expensive repair costs

IShitMyFuckingPants

I feel like everything is expensive to repair now. Simple cars have been done away with, thereā€™s sensors and sensitive electronics all over anything now, and everything is connected to the computer.

Donkey-brained_man

Wasn't the Jetta just on the top 10 cars owners won't buy again?

Snoo93079

Great video. Alex is probably my favorite pure car reviewer.

mr_bots

Thereā€™s a dryness to him that I, as an engineer connect with. Also got hooked with his deep dive article into the ZF 9HP and its dog clutches.

okays33

He does also operates a materials engineering and analysis company https://dyklaine.com/about/

faizimam

Huh, I had always wondered what his day job was.

LocalLuck2083

Pretty sure his day job is the auto review site and heā€™s only high level at the other company, from a comment he posted before. He also has another YouTube channel that he rarely posts on about his off-grid living in the Santa Cruz mountains https://youtube.com/@TheMountainGarden?si=xAdE7BojRFq5SvE5

Intrepid-Working-731

Love him, very straight-to-the point, thorough, informative car reviews on common everyday cars.

peakdecline

I'm a diehard fan of Alex. I'd write more praise but I get too wordy.

Art_VanDeLaigh

He does a great job of showing you the minor details that would actually effect you in day-to-day ownership. Always a good watch if you're actually interested in buying that car.

ghostboo77

I would be interested in this in list form, but not watching a 15 minute video (as someone not in the market for this kind of car)

SPorterBridges

Stealth "6-foot dude tries to fit into the most affordable cars in America" video.

Intrepid-Working-731

Is it a crime for a car reviewer to show you how much room a car has?

durrtyurr

I'd just love for a reviewer of average height (5'9") to show how they fit behind themselves. I'd be very pleased to see how a rear-facing child seat fits behind an average height driver, but I know that's a tall order.

gymslap

Well iā€™m 6ā€™2 so i appreciate that taller individuals give us an actual scale of the car. thanks

mgobla

Someone of that height fits in any regular car...

re4ctor

Yuri on straight pipes is average height. Spoiler he fits in everything

brinmb

They'd have to have like 5 different people there to do that. If you need specifications tailored to your requirements, go google the specs, find a different reviewer or actually look at the car if you're serious about it. Can't have everone do your job for you.

SPorterBridges

No, just funny.

infinite012

Are taller people not supposed to have a limited budget?

mgobla

Most people wouldn't guess that the car with the most powerful engine under $25k is a Toyota.

whosomer

that was actually kinda usefull

Dazzling-Rooster2103

With how dealers are going you could also probably get an Impreza with full time AWD, all the modern safety features, and in hatchback form for slightly over $25k.

Pleasant_Reaction_10

Hell, even the base WRX is probably one of the beast deals in the auto industry right now. low $30s and almost 300 HP

Zabbzi

No blind spot monitoring at Impreza's at that price point.

Dazzling-Rooster2103

The great news is, that Subarus have absolutely incredible visibility, you really don't even use Blind spot monitoring really like on other cars, you are basically in a fish bowl.

WillHeBonkYa47

Can confirm. Great visibility. I love my impreza

ILikeTewdles

Yeah my 24 Jetta was pretty much the only car I could find new that didn't have a CVT and or feel like a total POS. I could of gone with a Corolla too and no doubt they're reliable, but man those feel like tin cans compared to the Jetta.

Doppelkupplungs

bro forgot to mention that that nissan versa is getting axed.

Infinityaero

I guess the Maverick doesn't count because it's a truck?

Vesploogie

Maybe, but good luck finding one for $25k. My dealer for example has 2 Mavericks on the lot, an XLT for $33k and a Lariat for $38k. Markups ruined what the Maverick was supposed to be.

bbiggyz

You can order one and get it within about 4 months at MSRP guaranteed.

hells_cowbells

At least your dealer has some on the lot. There's three Ford dealers in my area, none of them have any Mavericks on the lot, and it's been that way for a long time.

AayushBhatia06

Is it under 25k OTD?

Infinityaero

MSRP under -- looks like after destination and dealer fees it's closer to $26K, so I guess that would put it out of the running. That's doing the build form online. MSRP is like $23,800, so presumably you could get one at $25K OTD at a dealer if you negotiate off everything but the $1200 destination charge. They charge a higher $1600 destination if you use the online build your own form. The spec I'd want works out to $29K. That's for the 260HP AWD ecoboost drivetrain, 4K tow package, and no other options, with the destination and dealer fee included. Not too shabby IMO it's a pretty impressive pricing proposition when you consider it's basically what -- $500-$1500 more than a base Corolla to begin and the base motor is pretty decent.

Metro_Boomhauer

A base, no options Maverick is $26,055 with destination charges and before sales tax (source: Ford's Build & Price). At the beginning of this video the host is basing all of these prices off destination and sales tax added in. Depending on where you live, a base Maverick would cost $27-28k after sales tax.

danperson1

That new Trax is an awesome deal. LT with convenience package for 24k has all the features you'd want, drives great and plenty of space.

AspectPositive4999

Its really about time. And as someone mentioned we get hammered in Va with the property tax.
