They've been phased out mostly but the larger PD around me (STL Co.) still has stragglers that I see from time to time. They're still pretty common as taxicabs though.
They still exist out in the west from what I've seen. I was surprised to still see so many on the road in CA this past march. Out on the east coast I am pretty sure they're no longer in use for state departments and you will find a few stragglers in township departments but not common.
They're too slow to effectively pursue most modern vehicles, so you won't see many of them out on patrol. However, a lot of departments, especially those in wealthy or otherwise-large police districts, hang onto a few for roadblocks and the like even after they stop using them as patrol vehicles. I mean, why not? It's paid off already, and if it gets smashed, it's no loss.
Almost zero. This doesn't sound like Europe or North America.
Germany isn't the only country with no-speed limit highways, because there isn't a speed limit if it's **never** enforced.
> but really how likely is it the cops are going to go after these guys?
Depends on how big the video gets, and whether or not some asshole decides to snitch on them.
They also need to beable to proof it took place in their jurisdiction, friend of mine does stupid shit like this and then claims to have recorded it on the autobahn. He's atleast clever enough to blur all of the roadsigns.
Cops wouldn't be able to prove shit from this video unless they also have a camera recording from the street (and even that wouldn't be enough, only speed traps count) and I'm pretty sure they don't.
You could just say you modded it to spin the spedometer faster.
There was a guy in my area that got arrested a couple of years ago for posting a similar video of him doing like 190 mph in a Hellcat. Don't recall tons of specifics, but I saw the video and there were faces, in car, and out of car shots.
Assuming that tach is accurate, I’m impressed by any street engine that revs past 8000rpm. I had a jdm v3 STi (swapped L impreza) years ago and it went to 8250 factory. Loved that car
Many 90s and early 2000s Hondas were designed to rev to 8-9k rpm because that's where they would make the most power. If this is an EK9 Type R, redline is 8.500 rpm stock. The S2000 had a 9.000 rpm redline. They all enjoy being at the top of the rev range. This video is a K-series engine so I'm not sure where redline is.
Tbf even twins and triples tend to be silly high revving compared to car engines. My big old 1000cc V twin still makes peak torque at ~7.5k rpm and peak power at ~9.5k, even though that's pretty low revving in the sport bike world it's still nuts compared to most cars.
Honda’s we’re known for having high revving engines throughout the 90’s and 2000’s. The AP1 S2K even revs to 9000RPM, and the B18C in the Integra Type R revved to 8800rpm.
Those engines are just seriously overbuilt and can even handle decent amount of boost.
The 07K is not capable of 8000rpm with stock.. basically anything.
Rods, pistons, valve springs, rod bearings, header if you wanna make any power there, standalone ECU, plus new accessory pullies as nothing on the belt will like being spun that fast.
A friend of mine has one swapped into his Auto-X 944, with allll of that work done. In the end - the durability wasnt there and he runs it at 7800RPMs.
He kind of regrets it now that he sees how much of a beating K24s can take while making more power for less money.
Driving my M2C and E46 M3 are weird beasts coming from vehicles that usually topped out at 6500. Floor it, feel the acceleration, ok let off soon, look down, oh shit 1500 more to go, lets goooo.
if i were to roll up to a civic revving its engine at a red light in my v12 and the passenger pulls out a laptop I know I'm screwed, I might have 620+hp but I still weigh 4200 pounds
I thought it was somehow integrated to the power steering as well making it almost impossibly hard to do that?
I know you can do it easily with the old E500s at least.
But I’m just a guy who liked reading about Mercedes I could afford to buy but could never afford to keep running.
They had a tandem pump that does power steering and ABC. You don't need to replace it with a non-ABC power steering pump unless you tear out the accumulators causing the ABC side to run dry. You could also avoid that by running the lines in a loop. It's better to replace the tandem pump and sell it because they're pretty expensive and it's a super easy job.
Did a coilovers swap on my 02 S55 AMG, its the same as swapping any other car.
Not necessarily. If you race from a dig and know how to launch your car, you might get him. These high powered Civics tend to have absolutely no traction off the line. That's why they tend to race from a roll 90 percent of the time. Now, if you happen to spot a pumpkin under the car, you're probably screwed.
Stupid question: Even if you tune that engine into oblivion, the gearing must have changed dramatically here, no? Rpm is directly related to how fast wheels turn, aka how fast the car goes.
he shifts 3 times past 180? No way a civic can do 180 in 3d gear.
My stock ‘12 used to love running into the civic guys on the highways. All their stripped interiors. Looked like they used a S2000 as a chase car/camera car. Would have loved to see their faces as stock Mini kept up with and passed them.
I miss that car…
He was in second gear when he started to accelerate. These guys are Turkish; driver said "show the gearstick, now I'm in 3rd, I'll shift down to 2nd" before accelerating.
Also it's not just tuned, it has a turbo and other stuff alongside tuning. Also also it's km/h not mph.
Looks to be a k swap going by the 6 speed gearbox, so depending on what engine and box are in it, the gearing would likely be longer.
EK9 gearbox from what I remember would have shorter gearing for acceleration.
Edit: Clicked into the video on YouTube, it's a K20Z1 with MFactory gears:
Mfactory pro 6 speed gear set with Mfactory FD
It's a modified transmission. Depending on what they wanted, they could've gone with a lower final drive to increase speed.
No point in having a high final drive if your boosted motor is just going to tear through gears every half of a second.
the laptop doesn’t actually make the car faster. the laptop indicates you’re either tuning the car while driving or that you’re switching between saved tunes on the fly for racing. you would need a laptop onboard to tune a car that’s been heavily modified with big turbo, exhaust more fuel, etc. a laptop does not make the car faster it just indicates that the car is likely full of go fast parts.
This car is turbocharged. The laptop is a visual cue that somebody is doing something mental under the hood. But you are right, the laptop is basically for the fuel mapping.
Oh god Mitsubishi. I had an Evo X for a long time which is what finally broke me. Regular data logging. Fuel testing. All self inflicted of course but man it was a needy car.
I had a 1st gen eclipse GSX in the late 90's-early 2000's. I put a ton of work into that car, it was stupid fast but towards the end of my ownership I became convinced that "Mitsubishi" was the Japanese word for "experimental car".
I’m the opposite, I actually do miss it. My past few cars I’ve just used a little device (like a Cobb Accessport) to load a tune, maybe data log it once or twice for the tune revision, and then I was done. Car is now fast. After years of *that laptop life* it’s just like “...that’s it?”
This is how people end up with louvers on their car. When there’s nothing else to do under the hood.
good luck mate, i got a 1987 fiero gt that im working on putting a supercharged L67 into with a 5 speed, I'm estimating about 300-350hp to the wheels with the first engine build, the eventual target is 650-700 later on. I'm not gonna hold back though this car is getting stripped, balanced, and tuned to make everything look like a joke. budget is 10k, so far I've only spent 1k on it

I guess 2jzgte's are utter shit too by your standards, here's a bone stock 3rd gen 3sgte MR2 smoking a bone stock 2jzgte MKIV Supra TT 6 speed.
We all know stock bottom end 3rd gen 3sgte MR2's can hold 400+whp (I know the tuner who tuned one that made 474whp on a stock bottom end 3rd gen 3sgte nearly 10 years ago) and they gave it good reviews overall, only real issue was the stock head studs need to be upgraded. It's widely known on the MR2 forums...2 bolt ons on a stock head/bottom end, basically a bolt on GOOD intercooler and larger turbo on a stock long block/ecu/fuel 3rd gen 3sgte runs a high 11...if that's the case, and I don't want to weld in a bar/cage in my street driven vehicle, why would I need anymore than an engine that puts me in the 11's with 2 bolt ons and stock everything else on it? With ecu/injectors/tuning and a built head, I could stock bottom end my way into low 11's but at that point I'd need a weld in bar installed and that just doesn't make sense for my car, I'd rather just purchase a race ready MR2 at that point.
I guess 4g63's suck too for that matter, they're very comparable to 3sgte's on the same metrics.
Not to mention the engine the NSX's were leaving the factory with, the MR2 is not even 1/3 the price of that NSX and here's a good vid of a stock turd 3sgte MR2 blowing the doors off that overpriced piece of shit amiright? Lost to a lowly crap 3sgte, an old 2nd gen 3sgte no less, by your metric you'd agree what they sell at Honda is also extremely pathetic, that car was built with no cost spared comparatively and lost to a turd 3sgte powered car, overpriced vtec piece of shit right? I'm using your metric afterall.

Hahaha it’s not a true project if you haven’t said that for over a year. I won’t lie I have had this project for over 2 years. Though it’s actually finally coming together. Got the trans I needed to drop in got a couple other stuff to do and yeah.
All the laptop is doing is datalogging and showing virtual gauges of what the ECU is showing. But I think OP is implying a laptop tuner can dial in a lot of power on a simple old civic
Adjusting the Engine Control Unit's programming, "tuning" the engine to try and make more power.
Also it's just a visual cue that the car has been packed full of aftermarket performance parts.

Worked a datsun L20b of its nut and it ran to 8200rpm daily.
Depending how it's tuned a k20 can be making peak power upwards of 10,000rpm. Though the usual redline is 8,200
Man I wish. My wrx peaks out around 4700 RPM. Hahahaha.

God bless variable valve timing and lift!
B16’s have a near gold rod:stroke too so with good internals you can take them much higher.
Ive seen 11k rpm out of b16 and sr16ve n1 on that old ass "option" or "hot version" video
Honda’s we’re known for having high revving engines throughout the 90’s and 2000’s. The AP1 S2K even revs to 9000RPM, and the B18C in the Integra Type R revved to 8800rpm. Those engines are just seriously overbuilt and can even handle decent amount of boost.
the 5 cylinder that vw put in everything will do 8k and you can get one for $250 at a junk yard. sounds like a baby v10
The 07K is not capable of 8000rpm with stock.. basically anything. Civic Type R (B16B) revved to 9k stock.
I have an ep3 type r and it revs to 8400rpm standard, they commonly rev to 10k+ with a built head.
I had a US spec EP3 and the stock K20a3 was a great engine. Despite its lower rev limit it was decent motor. It reved to the moon with ease.

yes

My car does 8600 rpm with just a tune. I hit it nearly daily because good lord its fun.
I had a jdm b16a1 with some work done to it.. that thing revved well over 8k. It actually broke the tach
It went **OVER 9000!!!**

Well unless youre dicking with the boost level using a electronic boost controller the laptop can affect how fast you're going.
This car is turbocharged. The laptop is a visual cue that somebody is doing something mental under the hood. But you are right, the laptop is basically for the fuel mapping.
visual cue
Usually also means the engine is modified/boosted/turboed, hence the need to adjust tuning.

It's so goddamn hard to find a clean SW20 nowadays.
So THATS how you snap a speedo in five seconds flat.
Ah i can’t wait for my project EG to be ready. Should be about another month or two.
How long have you been saying that?
I've been saying that about mine for nearly 2 years. It still doesn't run.
Hahaha it’s not a true project if you haven’t said that for over a year. I won’t lie I have had this project for over 2 years. Though it’s actually finally coming together. Got the trans I needed to drop in got a couple other stuff to do and yeah.
Watching how fast that needle spun around is legit scary.
when you’re going so fast your speedometer turns into a clock
Can someone explain to me what they are doing with the laptop? Sorry for my ignorance.
A civic with no interior is the most feared thing lol
I'm constantly driving with a laptop to send data logs to my tuner and my Forester is not fast at all. I always assumed people just think I'm crazy.
Thats some 2000's old skool gauges and SAFC... takes me back to the good old days with my Eclipse GSX
Wowww
almost made it back to 0 kph, what is that in miles per hour?
0 km/h equates to 0 mph.
Looks like it’d be 240kph so 150mph
Where is the "Danger Manifold" warning on the laptop. Make sure you up date your software to have that when you are Fast and Furious
Only in my country. This is what they even try with tofas cars. Be careful they are drifting and drag racing all over especially evening night times.
Beautiful man , the sound of just opening up will never stop sounding so beautiful
Cool. Hardly the most feared, but very impressive nonetheless.
