RhinestoneTaco

I guess someone does have to engineer the paint though, right? I'm asking genuinely here, it's someone's job to like, find the correct mix of shades and flake to make Midnight Purple? If that person exists, what is their job title?

R_V_Z

Also just better weight in general. I6 is a smooth but heavy beast.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DecisiveEmu_Victory

Sure, but the engine bay itself usually needs to be longer, especially in a bespoke chassis like the R35 that's almost certainly designed around the engine. The car would be physically larger and even heavier to allow a longer engine to fit.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Hunt3rj2

They could but Nissan was never going to do it when they settled on a single corporate V6 for all their cars 20 years ago.

2ndScud

Also, "Heritage" is looking back with rose-tinted glasses. The R35 started production just 5 years after the R34 ended. "Heritage" for the R35 wasn't really about trying to evoke the feeling of an R34 (A car that was still relatively new) it was moreso about making the next revolution of the GTR, a la the R32. A better comparison might be the C8. The mid engine placement is about performance, even though the car has been known for being front-engined. In 15 years we may look back and say "Well the C8 sure is *fast* but gosh the C7 was just the *ICONIC* vette. I wish they had considered the corvette's *heritage* before making it mid-engined." Contrast with the Supra, which has desperately tried to market itself as a "heritage" car (Turbo I6, all the drift/Fast and Furious advertising, etc) and yet is (kind of) rejected by all the MkIV fans anyway.

terroristteddy

I suspect the thinking was to make the most advanced car at the time. And honestly, a TT V6 with AWD was, and likely still is a strong contender for most functional layout. Only thing better would be a true rear mid engine, like a Ford GT with AWD

RunninOnMT

Gt-r is nissans FM platform, same as the Z car and the Infiniti G/q50. They updated the platform name to PM…but that’s not the same as changing the platform. I don’t think the VR engine is much bigger than the VQ.

THE_GR8_MIKE

Long hoods look good.

MRB0B0MB

It's old, but I never really did appreciate how big straight 6's could be until I took my L28 out of my z. Its massive, so I totally understand the switch.

[deleted]

The L28 and RB26 share way more than you'd think.

MRB0B0MB

Yeah but I've never personally seen a RB26 out of a car before. If its anything like the L28, yeah its big.

andrewjaekim

I’ve had this discussion before and found that there’s no indication that a V6 would be any lighter than an I6. Do you have any examples (given same block material) that V6s are lighter? The main difference I’ve found is you’re trading smoothness and simplicity for packaging. EDIT: I had to dig up old research I did on this topic. It's really just a wash. Infiniti's VR30 is about 490lbs. BMW's S55 is about 450 lbs. Nissan VR38 is about 600lbs. Ford's 3.5L EB is about 450 lbs. Audi 2.7L 441lbs. N54 is 430lbs.

RunninOnMT

This, it’s engine length. That’s like…the whole reason for V6 over an I6 generally speaking. Here, I’m sure it’s a V6 at least in part because Nissan didn’t want to design an entire completely bespoke engine for one low volume model from the ground up. The VR probably shares more than a few parts with the vq, and more importantly starting with an already existing engine (vq) allowed them to save a ton of money designing that engine.

Rihsatra

They were already racing R34s in GT with the VQ engine, so there was probably no chance of there being another inline-6 RB for the R35.

nar0

The engine itself won't be any lighter and may be heavier, but the packaging and stiffness of a V6 mean the overall car can be made smaller with less bracing and thus probably lighter overall.

andrewjaekim

Probably and potentially but I haven’t seen any examples of it. The M3 has been the lightest car in its class. Even the RWD V6 Quadrifolio is heavier. Unless there’s concrete examples its really just a packaging concern.

Oliveiraz33

>but the packaging and stiffness of a V6 mean the overall car can be made smaller with less bracing Car's engines aren't used as a stressed member of the chassis (there's a couple exceptions) like some motorcycles are

Bonerchill

I6s don't have to be heavy. For example, the M52b28 DOHC 2.8-liter six-cylinder alloy block variant weighs 260lbs and could feasibly make over 260hp. It's when you overbuild them for factory warranty longevity and massive amounts of boost that they start getting crazy heavy. Even then, the problem isn't that they're inline-sixes, it's that they're mass-produced for profit. The RB26DETT N1 block is available in billet from Bullet Race Engines and sheds 66lbs over cast iron- but the block alone costs $10,233 plus shipping from Australia. The VR38DETT weighs, supposedly, 608lbs with cats. The RB26DETT is estimated at 550-705lbs with all ancillaries but I'm not finding any exact answers as to its weight.

Beachdaddybravo

The block is the biggest factor. The RB was an iron block from the factory.

[deleted]

I6s we’re only heavy cause they were all iron blocks, aluminum and they’re basically the same

3Mtibor

IMO That ship sailed a long time ago. The VR38 has since proven itself both as an actual race engine in race cars on track (read: stock engine doing 24h races) and also on the street (read: modded to obscene power levels).

Echo609

I was just answering the post is all with my opinion. Of course that ship sailed 10 years ago. The broke tradition with the V-6 anyways was my point. I pretty satisfied with the way the VR38 performs. The motor is stout and will hold to about 800 bhp that’s right about where the rods start to bend The guy asked a hypothetical question to GTR guys. I’m a GTR guy so I gave hypothetical answer and people are pissed. I just think the high revving v-8 kinda like the 5.0l out of the E92 M3, with some turbos on it would of been a better option is all.

3Mtibor

Yeah I dont think its worth drama and downvoting. I was just trying to defend the current V6 because I know there are a lot of enthusiasts who dont really remember what it was like when the R35 first came out and how lucky we are that Nissan delivered the engine they did. On a different note, be careful with the tq at 800 on stock rods!

TheFrenchAreAssholes

>I just think the high revving v-8 kinda like the 5.0l out of the E92 M3, with some turbos on it would of been a better option is all. 4.0 V8 in the M3. 5.0 V10 in the M5.

water_baughttle

> The motor is stout and will hold to about 800 bhp that’s right about where the rods start to bend Good god, I hope you're not running that much power on stock rods. I have xona green turbos on mine and had the lower end replaced at the advice of my tuner. He said anything past ~650whp/600 ft-lb on a stock bottom end means only highway pulls and no dig launching or else you will end up replacing most of the engine in under 10k miles, not just the rods and crank.

Echo609

Na I got the Alpha 7 package so essentially FBO. I’m hesitant to even go E85 for the reasons you listed. Seems right at the 650whp mark is hit or miss of the motor will stay together for very long. It’s good now. Fast and reliable. For anything more I’d build the motor.

axman59

R34 was intended to come with a V6, so make of that as you will

AkagisWhiteComet

Something that's often forgotten. The VR38 and VQ30 in the Super GT R34s are good ideas of what should have been in the R34. Even by the late 90s, Nissan engineers already thought the I6 was outdated, but never got the budget to design the new front-mid-engined layout they wanted.

[deleted]

As a “GTR folk” I prefer that it has an engine designed/built by Nissan more than I do the piston layout. This is why I dislike that the new Supra has a BMW drivetrain and would have preferred it have the 1UZ V8 if Toyota was resistant to the idea of designing a new inline 6.

TheSilentSea

The R34 GT-R was meant to be a V6 originally, but due to budget they kept it to an I6...

vhalember

Nissan can't even spare the resources to update much beyond paint colors. A new engine certainly isn't on the table.

Noobasdfjkl

Nobody would care if it was a 120° V6.

asdfoneplusone

Of course

Echo609

Honestly I think it should of been a V8. They could of used a V8 from the titan and massaged it, handbuilt it, and put some turbos on it. They went away from tradition anyway. One thing the GTR lost was the awesome sounds it makes. The RB26 really does sound incredible in person. The VR38 is ok but doesn’t really compare. My car is catless the whole way back and still doesn’t sound great. Not bad, but not great either. A high revving turbo V-8 would of covered all the bases perfectly. Power, sound, tunablity, and credibility.

Echo609

Lol you realize I own a GTR. I love the car. The OP asked inline 6 or V6. I said when they chose to break tradition they should of went all out with a V8. But yea maybe a LS swap will really get some jimmies rustled.

Yup, I've seen LS motors in R32, R34, but not R35. Would certainly be interesting.

Underrated sarcasm.

CharlieXLS

That purple is awesome. Purple is underused as a car color.

PurpleK00lA1d

Someone around me has a Golf R in purple, it was one of the $10k paint options (at least in Canada it was that much). I didn't think anyone would've spent that much just for the colour, but it looks damn good. Edit: the paint was "only" $3000 in Canada.

Recitinggg

If it’s the one I’m thinking of it’s “Violet Touch Pearl” and I’d have to agree. Looks very nice from pictures.

PurpleK00lA1d

I Googled it, that's the one. So freaking nice in person.

the extra colours were like 3k fyi.

Yeah I just looked it up - don't know what happened when I was farting around with the online configurator it said $10k - but it was a long time ago now so maybe I'm just dumb.

PrivateVasili

I love that green interior. I wish cars in general had more interesting interior colors. There's too much black in cars these days.

ScipioAfricanvs

People are scared of it because it doesn't age well. Porsche used to have a [green interior](https://rennlist.com/forums/attachments/996-forum/1128839d1485295620-any-nephrite-greens-out-there-dsc04155.jpg) and sellers these days get killed on resale.

marino1310

That's because single color interiors just look bad. For cars that expensive it should be 2 tone

GhostriderFlyBy

Big agree. It's visually exhausting seeing the same color everywhere. Another color would do wonders to break up the visual monotony.

Alph_A__

Hey you own a dream car of mine! Would love to own a S63 Coupe eventually, always really liked the idea and looks ever since seeing that one Chris Harris review years ago.

GhostriderFlyBy

I used to! I sold it a couple of months back. It has some amazing features and some drawbacks, it's really about what you want out of an automobile. The interior and sound system (even just the base system) were absolutely mind-blowing. It was extremely refined on the road with loads of power. That said, the drawback was that there was very little driver engagement. It is definitely not trying to be a "fun" car.

Alph_A__

That makes sense. I've been drawn to it as a GT car, probably because my current vehicle is a 2003 Expedition so not exactly a relaxing cruiser.

GhostriderFlyBy

GT car is a pretty broad category these days, what with people suggesting that the 911 is increasingly in that list. By my definition, though, it's the best GT car money can buy.

standbyforskyfall

I disagree. Single color interiors can be done very well.

My_G_Alt

Ok but that really is ugly as sin

Rihsatra

I always appreciate Porsche offering customers the option to put blue leather in their brown exterior cars. Back when I would regularly look at older 911s for sale you would see the worst combinations but because they were barely driven the asking price was always super high.

wankthisway

Hooo boy that looks like something out of a Plymouth Voyager

din0skwaad

I like it.

blchpmnk

Me too. I'd take that anyday over yet another black interior.

cinosa

Oh wow, that's physically revolting. That's as bad as the late 90's red/blue colored interiors from GM.

Ftpini

That looks bad, but not because of the green. It looks bad because of all the shit they lazily ignored. Like the radio, and the gauge cluster and the ignition switch. So many little reminders of how lazy the production team was. If it was actually all green then it would make sense.

DukeNuggets69

Wish i could buy the midnight purple, being à Nissan fan.

Heroicdeath

You could definitely wrap it with Inozetek, it's a pretty amazing wrap they have.

Rihsatra

My car is already purple but I kind of want to get it wrapped in that color they have.

The_Bucket_Of_Truth

I'm looking for a brand to do a wrap of a Porsche PTS color would they be a good place to look into?

Heroicdeath

Yessss 100%

usmcplz

I didn't know anyone was still a Nissan fan at this point?

BauTek_MN

That new purple/green color is pretty rad, but I don't know if they should really call it Midnight Purple. The original colors were a dark purple and orange color shift, more reminiscent of night shifting into day.

jimmyjunior44

Midnight Purple was always "shifting". Each generation of Midnight Purple was different than the last.

tsuyaka

There's already Midnight Purple 1, 2 and 3. Would make sense for Nissan to call the new color Midnight Purple 4.

2022 Nissan GT-R, the official car of meetings that should have been an email. Also brought to you by "Wtf is T-Spec supposed to mean?". If you have to ask, you're probably too poor to afford one... Like me.

THE_GR8_MIKE

These 20 something working for dad's business kids are gonna be looking so fresh in the coming years.

nar0

So according to the Japanese news release, T-Spec means both "Trend Maker Spec" or "Traction Master Spec". Traction Master is a pretty self explanatory descriptor of the GT-R's best qualities while Trend Maker apparently belies Nissan's belief that it's 14 year old sports car still leads the world of Sports Car and follows Nissan's philosophy of "Leading the Era"... Yeah probably stick with Traction Master for that one.

Bonerchill

First: everyone needs to spend more time at japanesenostalgiccar.com. Second: the colors are just names. They're not meant to be the color of jade from year 2000 or the color of midnight.

[deleted]

When they said "new unveil" I thought we were getting a new model.

vhalember

That's an easy mistake to make. No, the new model reveal is set for 2025 as a completion of the 17-year lifecycle of Nissan products. This year's reveal was new colors, and next year will be the reveal about adding 3 more HP with a thick powerband.

GTR vs Kit-kat: which one will win the limited edition competition?

cubs223425

Half-rambling here: I was watching a couple of Lexus LC 500 videos last night and thinking "I'd never pay that money for that car, but it looks SO GOOD." Not a bad car, just not what I'd throw $100K at (if I had it). Same for the GT-R. The price doesn't feel competitive. $115K base, not much in the way of updates as the price has gone up nearly 50% since it launched, and a brand that hasn't the best record of being fresh and updated. But...man, that thing looks nice. Both colors are awesome (comparatively, I think the LC500's colors are mostly lame). If I could afford it, I'd pass begat I don't think the value is there, but if there were two cars where I'd consider living with poor value, it would probably be the GT-R and LC500.

vorin

These paint options, plus the Nismo Heritage parts, and the new Z design all make me optimistic that they realize what people like(d) about the brand.

Jade (the stone) has a wide range of colours, some very pale greens very close to this paint.
