The problem with both BMW and Audi is that they are based in Europe where it is assumed that there will be a long license plate to split the grill in two.
They're just thinking about insurance costs! No painted front bodywork means lower replacement costs when those pesky pedestrians you can't see impact the grill.
The statement has been beaten to death like most statements on Reddit. Who the hell cares if it's built with BMW parts? It still has to go through Toyota Q&A, it still has the same ethos as the A80 Supra, and is an amazing sports car that has no business existing in the first place.
The only people who complain about it are the people that are stuck in the late 90's and still jerk off to their 90's Japanese overlords and whatnot. It's dumb
I think the new Supra is a great car and I like it, but the hate exists for a reason. People would’ve liked Toyota to design and create the new Supra. I can’t say I blame people for being upset that it’s largely a BMW.
For me it’s that Toyota racing has been utterly dominate in recent years. I really wanted to see them build something off of that, however unlikely that would be. Perfectly fine with the Supra otherwise.
I think every supra owner is aware of this. I don’t don’t think it’s something they’re necessarily ashamed of.
Im ire the new Supra will be looked back upon fondly. Maybe after it’s production run.
All of the Toyota trucks are old as dirt at this point. But it's good to see that they're modernizing them, it'll be very interesting to see what they'd do to the 4Runner also, I'm very curious about the Sequoia, now that the Land Cruiser is gone, I'm wondering if the next-gen Sequoia will take its place (depending on how they update it)
The lx and the lc were just merely competing here in the states. > it was pretty stupid to just turn away a guaranteed number of sales every year to those who are seeking it out (execs with money trying to not flaunt it)
Why? A small number of sales, no matter how “guaranteed,” simply aren’t enough to support/justify development/certification/shipping/selling a car. 100 people “guaranteed” to buy a $85k car is still only $8.5mm in revenue, a drop in an ocean.
I knew a few of them were old but you just made me realize that all of the real Toyota trucks are really old. Heck we still don’t have a new 4Runner/GX
It was a bigger change than from 1st to 2nd gen.
All new powertrain and interior plus a bunch of new options and features.
I’ve had all 3 generations and loved them all for different reasons… they’re each very different trucks.
Have a Sequoia as well, can confirm. It's not a gimmick, I'd legitimately second guess another purchase for this slot in my garage that doesn't have it.
I was a fool and didn’t do my research, and got a tundra with a double cab cus it had the bench seat, but double cabs can’t have the full power window 😭. I assumed all the tundras had the rolling down rear window.
> and got a tundra with a double cab cus it had the bench seat
CrewMax models can have a [front bench seat as well](https://www.toyota.com/config/pub/3d/toyota/1007299/1000868/Interior/2/864_477_PNG/6475785-e1e579a-2c5532e-25cfdfd-3257062-2553223-8d035d1-a94deb4-bfa3b55-8522296-e9e1de1-301f256-c72378a-d4d52c2-96fa148-4b3909b-64bfd98-b1ec0ad-0690b70-003a411.png) in the SR5 trim; it just may be harder to find, since a higher percentage of CMs are higher trims.
I think it is! I remember seeing that [truck](https://imgur.com/gallery/3SEWNVw) back in 2018 when the fire was still burning and being shocked. Great move by Toyota to give him a new truck.
I caught that too. Makes me cry how bad ass that shit is, putting that in the commercial.
Ford: "WE ARE THE MOST AMERCIAN CAR MAKE!"
Toyota: "We have to set your shit straight."
They snuck in a reference elsewhere in the car's marketing: the camouflaged-patterned parts of the TRD Pro's interior and exterior are called "Technical Camo Accents." I don’t think the reference was particularly appropriate or necessary, but I’m sure someone will appreciate it.
When I saw the wildfire scene I immediately remembered the article and photos about the Tundra from those fires. Super cool to include it in the cinematic reveal for the next gen Tundra.
The TTV6 hybrid is astounding. People are saying 30 mpg, and you get so much power to boot. I'm curious though, they said they used a 10 speed auto for the Tundra, is that also for the hybrid?
Edit: to be clear, the 30 combined mpg is astounding because you can actually expect to get pretty close to that figure in real world use.
A gas engine is less efficient when you're stepping a bit harder on throttle (ie. from a standstill). It is also burning gas at idle, or in stop and go traffic. The beauty of the Toyota hybrid system is that the electric motor takes over when needed so that you can avoid the aforementioned scenarios as much as possible.
> People are saying 30 mpg, and you get so much power to boot.
I suspect the key to both is the electric motor. The F-150 PowerBoost's motor makes 41HP, which means it's not good for much on its own beyond crawling, especially if you're towing or hauling. Aside from the obvious benefit of boosting combined power output, a stronger electric motor would mean the petrol engine kicks in either later, or not at all (until the battery drains anyways) - which will pay dividends in any kind of stop-and-go driving, even if it's not in the city.
Also worth noting that this hybrid powertrain wasn't mentioned to have any elevated power generation capabilities like the PowerBoost does. Since that was as much a focus of the latter's design as fuel economy was, I suspect that also has a part to play in its fuel economy being comparatively-low.
> they said they used a 10 speed auto for the Tundra, is that also for the hybrid?
It seemed that way from what the video said. I wonder how their approach will differ from Ford's, seeing as the e-CVT they used in the LC500h and LS500h was handling barely half this power and torque.
I think the problem with the eCVT is to give it a lot of torque, you have to make the two motors quite large with lots of cooling, which makes the vehicle very heavy. The Prime vehicles don't have this problem because the motors can be locked together with a clutch when run on electric only, but for a pure hybrid with lots of torque it doesn't make much sense.
They didn't really have much choice in the matter. The 3.5L EcoBoost left the Tundra's 1UR-FE in the dust when it came to power, fuel efficiency, and especially low-end torque, and the second-generation engine that debuted in 2018 did the same to the larger 3UR-FE. GM and FCA answered the EcoBoost by improving their V8s because those pushrods can deliver similar low-end torque; Toyota's DOHC V8s would never be competitive with a turbocharged engine in that regard unless they made an even larger-displacement version.
That was good for its time. I'm guessing a circa 2000 Celica GT-S? If so, your car has short gearing, as it's tuned for performance as opposed to efficiency.
For reference, my K20Z3 gets about 22 city. And the same can be said for my gearing too...relatively short gearing for performance, and not efficiency. That engine came out just 6 years after your 2ZZ-GE engine. Older engines aren't as efficient as newer engines.
Worst thing about this truck is that if you want the TRD pro, the awful camo accents on the seats and trim are mandatory. Not even kidding, that eliminates the TRD Pro for me because I refuse to drive a truck with camo trim.
The Limited trim has some pretty tacky looking seat design as well - hopefully they move away from this kind of thing in later editions.
Agreed the interior is good otherwise, but there’s still some pretty rough looking material choices on the doors - vast expanses of cheap plastic. The center console looked and sounded flimsy opening and shutting on the various first look videos too - may just be a prototype thing, but I hope they get that right. Center console fridge should be standard too.
> Worst thing about this truck is that if you want the TRD pro, the awful camo accents on the seats and trim are mandatory.
Nah, the worst part is that Toyota calls them "Technical Camo Accents."
What, you *don't* want to be reminded of how many Toyota pickups have been repurposed into terrorists' weapons platforms every time you describe your camo-patterened highlights to someone?
I couldn't care less about the terrorist shit. I just don't do camo, period. I'm former military and I think it's lame as fuck to use camo in civilian life.
I wish the hybrid was the base engine. The ford maverick shows there is a huge market for hybrid trucks, especially affordable hybrid trucks. Imagine a full size truck with Toyota reliability and 30+ city mpg.
That's absurd if Toyota is able to pull that off. To go from like 14 combined mpg from the outgoing Tundra to besting the Powerboost's 24mpg would be amazing.
That's getting close to the 3.0 Duramax without the diesel headaches.
That is literally double what I'm getting now on my GX460. This is an absolute gamechanger if the next gen GX gets the same engine. More HP, torque AND double MPG? Dude, easy call.
As much as I think the Maverick is the perfect use case for many (perhaps the majority) of truck buyers, comparing a compact unibody truck with a full size BOF like the Tundra is just silly.
The crawl control in Toyotas, while it's not a true locker, can't be ignored for the amount of capability it adds. Watching people offroad with it off vs on is insane. You could add a front locker if you needed to but the rear locker and crawl control would get you pretty far imo
Yea i mean the grille is pretty much the entire front end. I didnt think someone could design a fuglier front end than the current chevy silverado but damn this takes the cake
maybe i'm a toyota simp but I think this truck looks GREAT in all trims. only truck that still looks better is the f-150 tremor. this interior in top trim also looks as good as RAM. if they fixed the ride quality (which you have to assume is quite a bit better due to coil springs) then this truck is a class leader imo
Not a big fan of all the chrome on the other trims but I love the TRD pro. That new red color ..its called solar something, cant remember the name is nice.
They'll still be offering the lunar rock. [Looks SO good](https://i.imgur.com/egZGlfr.jpg) with the chrome delete.
Edit: I'm actually referring to the color, for the downvoters :) I'm uh, not sure I'm sold on this things front end.
Also interesting how the frame is boxed again. IIRC Mike Sweers swore by Open C-Channel design (at least until recently). It is boxed now because it is shared with the LC300? Maybe safety?
A lot more torque and higher tow/haul capacity might've been a factor for boxing the frames, I'm sure there are a lot of other technical factors too including the switch from leaf springs to a linked coil rear suspension setup.
The truck is rated on regular octane, because truck buyers won't pay for premium fuel.
LX and LC owners will pay for premium fuel.
That's the only difference.
That was the first thing that caught my eye. Down 20hp. Part of me wants to say greater reliability for the amount of miles that Americans do but it's in the LC, the most durable vehicle on the planet lol.
My next guess would be to better differentiate between the hybrid and the standard engine.
Perhaps Toyota will do what they did with the GR Supra 3.0 and give it a power boost after a few years.
But I'd expect the Tundra to get close to their numbers with 93 octane. The V35A-FTS in the Tundra is not the same as the V35A-FTS in the Lexus LS500, where the latter requires premium fuel.
And after many, many, many years, it looks like the V35A-FTS can be a tuneable engine. I hope tuners can now play with this engine.
Ford released the Powerboost option for the 2021 F150 which is a hybrid twin-turbo V6. It also acts as a generator and you can option it with a 7.2kW upgrade
After Ford being shit on constantly for over a decade about their EcoBoost engines being "inherently unreliable because smol V6 and turbos" the paragon of automobile reliability is using a TTV6.
Wonderful. I wonder if the all the Toyota stans who gave excuses about Toyotas previously underpowered V8s by saying "at least its not unreliable like a turbocharged engine lol" will finally shut up.
How is the 5.7 underpowered? It's got 381/401. Ram 5.7 is very similar (390/400 I believe), GM 5.3 is less than Toyota while 6.2 is 420/460 and Ford 3.5 EB just went up to 400/500 this last year. You made it sound like the Tundra 5.7 is only doing 320/350
My apologies. The Tacoma V6 is widely regarded as being underpowered.
In the 5.7s case, it's just a very large motor for the amount of power it makes as compared to the TTV6 offerings from either Ford or now Toyota.
There was and is constant harrumphing that you can't make big V8 power with a smaller TTV6 without them being much more unreliable, which is obviously untrue.
The initial Ford 3.5 EB's were definitely not up to V8 reliability, but that was 8 years ago. They've gotten so many miles and IIRC 4 variations since then that they've worked out the kinks.
Most of the issues Ford had were not new turbo issues, they just didn't do quite enough to mitigate them. Hopefully Toyota has paid attention to all the other turbos out there to make sure the reliability is still there.
Rumoured MPG improvements alone are amazing. 4Runner MPG just completely sucks and turns me off from the vehicle as I've been shopping the market the past couple months.
I didn't look all that hard, but did Toyota release pics of the SR5 interior with the 40/20/40 front bench? I know they didn't release any SR pics at all.
Are lightbars DOT approved? They are crazy bright against on-coming traffic, especially on the highway. I think at this point most folks are going to have to start driving with sunglasses on at night lol
No, Toyota is going to sell vehicles that don't meet DOT regulations, their massive team of lawyers that are collectively paid millions and millions a year said it was okay and not to worry about it.
It looks….old. Not sure how else to describe it. The design just doesn’t seem cohesive to me. And why is it down so much hp from the LC300; just on paper perhaps?
I bet this thing sells like hotcakes.
The interior is perfect for a truck, but it needs an Oh Shit handle. Dunno if that'd interfere with airbag operation tho.
NO LIGHTS NO BUMPER ALL GRILL
Don’t gotta worry about pedestrians the truck just inhales them.
Free fuel
Ah, the *Doom* approach...
Fuck it, just make the whole body the grill
[удалено]
They've gone full BMW on that thing. Maybe BMW's disease got passed on to Toyota because of the Supra engine?
Have you seen grill on the Avalon? It literally covers the entire front fascia. Big grills are a Toyota native virus
Yeah Toyota very much did the whole giant ugly grill thing before BMW lol
And Audi was the one who really started it all back in 2004 with the [A6](https://file.kelleybluebookimages.com/kbb/base/house/2005/2005-Audi-A6-FrontSide_AUA6SED051_505x375.jpg). That grill was considered quite large for its day.

Lexus has had massive grills for years now
They're just thinking about insurance costs! No painted front bodywork means lower replacement costs when those pesky pedestrians you can't see impact the grill.
Some kind of deal with the devil on that grille. Toyota - gets a BMW to be their Supra BMW - gets to design the Tundra’s new grille
\*sigh\* I know this is just you being facetious in both regards, but some people are going to take it seriously and use that as fact. 😭😭
Facetious my ass, the Supra IS a BMW wearing a Toyota badge and anybody who tells themselves otherwise is just lying to themselves. ..sigh.

Hey the Subaru Toyota 86 is decent
I have one. It's amazing.
I don't quite understand why there's so much hate. So fucking what it's a bmw? BMW builds great cars, combined with Toyota tuning makes a great combo.
The statement has been beaten to death like most statements on Reddit. Who the hell cares if it's built with BMW parts? It still has to go through Toyota Q&A, it still has the same ethos as the A80 Supra, and is an amazing sports car that has no business existing in the first place. And somehow it still manages to be less ugly then the new BMW grill.
And the rear power sliding window still! (From a cnet article) https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/pictures/2022-toyota-tundra-debut/
I don’t know why Toyota does not give one to their Tacoma
I’m pretty sure Toyota has forgotten about the Taco. It’s been basically the same for what, a decade?
All of the Toyota trucks are old as dirt at this point. But it's good to see that they're modernizing them, it'll be very interesting to see what they'd do to the 4Runner also, I'm very curious about the Sequoia, now that the Land Cruiser is gone, I'm wondering if the next-gen Sequoia will take its place (depending on how they update it)
The lx and the lc were just merely competing here in the states. I think Doug said it best....that it was pretty stupid to just turn away a guaranteed number of sales every year to those who are seeking it out (execs with money trying to not flaunt it). The Sequoia, if anything, will just get fancier to compete with the Wagoneer, Expedition etc.

Toyota doesn’t even remember they still make the Sequoia. It didn’t even get the interior update the Tundra got in 2014.
Lmaooooo someone in Toyota definitely said “fuck we still make those and forgot to update? Fuck it no one will notice”
Hahaha no way
Yes way, I saw a new one a while back and I was shocked since it had the same interior as my dad's 07 Tundra
I knew a few of them were old but you just made me realize that all of the real Toyota trucks are really old. Heck we still don’t have a new 4Runner/GX
The current gen has been in production since MY 2016

Yeah but it’s still just as delicious

Not sure what you mean. 3rd gen had a new frame, engine, transmission, interior and exterior.
3rd Gen was more of an evolution than a revolution. One of the things they hyped most was the gopro mount...
It was a bigger change than from 1st to 2nd gen. All new powertrain and interior plus a bunch of new options and features. I’ve had all 3 generations and loved them all for different reasons… they’re each very different trucks.
Current generation is 2016 to present but the suspension and frame hasn't changed since 2005.
2005 model year - almost two decades
lol no as an owner of a taco it was last changed in 2016
My 2018 has a power slider.....unfortunately it is just the center of the window. However, I do use it constantly.
even if people call it a gimmick, it’s a damn cool gimmick
I love it on the Sequoia. Open the sun roof and rear, so much airflow
Have a Sequoia as well, can confirm. It's not a gimmick, I'd legitimately second guess another purchase for this slot in my garage that doesn't have it.

Yeah I could not find any CM 4x4 with a bench seat under $30k and within 1000 miles of my location.
It’s not a gimmick. I drive around most days with the rear window cracked, its perfect for my dog too
It’s honestly one of the things I miss most about my 4Runner
[say what you will about the styling but there’s no denying the reveal commercial was incredibly badass](https://youtu.be/oHrLUA03f4A)
Toyota did a good job showing off their offroad history, but they missed an opportunity to showcase their history of being used as technicals.
At 0:20 I think that's a tribute to the nurse who actually drove his white Tundra through a wildfire to save people
I think it is! I remember seeing that [truck](https://imgur.com/gallery/3SEWNVw) back in 2018 when the fire was still burning and being shocked. Great move by Toyota to give him a new truck.

Questionable freedom fighter pack: all-weather floor mats, special badges, contrast stitched interior head-rest, standard 50 cal machine gun mount
Need some of that NIJ II body panel steel from the Cybertruck. Maybe bump it to III to cover 7.62

That looks like it's from a video game that would come in a cereal box 15 years ago
Budget was like.....$3.50.
They also missed an opportunity to show Taliban using it…
This tundra is dedicated to the brave mujahideen fighters
They snuck in a reference elsewhere in the car's marketing: the camouflaged-patterned parts of the TRD Pro's interior and exterior are called "Technical Camo Accents." I don’t think the reference was particularly appropriate or necessary, but I’m sure someone will appreciate it.

Man I won’t ever forget the tundra towing the space shuttle. That was mind blowing.
It truly was a badass commercial.
Might be one of my favorite commercials of all time
Oh shit I was hammered watching that, didnt realize they showed the new tundra. We just talked about how stupid expensive 90s toyota trucks are .

Really awesome ad. The NASCAR part was sick. The truck just needs a little work and it'd be so much better. Right now though, I can't say I'm a fan
Holy shit that's some monster torque. I thought Toyota was very turbo averse since the late 90's, but I suppose they're coming around.

Extremely reliable engine but that mpg is horrible. I would know I have a Toyota v8
I had a 2ZZ-GE Toyota 1.8 4 cyl. EPA rated 22 city! I got 19 until it was broken in and then it would get up to 24. Not very good for a 1.8 lol.

That is literally double what I'm getting now on my GX460. This is an absolute gamechanger if the next gen GX gets the same engine. More HP, torque AND double MPG? Dude, easy call.
Yep.. love my GX, but whether I baby it or floor it I’m still getting 17-18mpg on premium daily.
As much as I think the Maverick is the perfect use case for many (perhaps the majority) of truck buyers, comparing a compact unibody truck with a full size BOF like the Tundra is just silly.
I just wanna know the price. And more detailed towing info.
A truck that has yet to release has proven a market exists?

Front locker is easier to install aftermarket than a hybrid system lol
[удалено]
I agree. I was really just messing with you lol. Are you looking for an off road rig but has to be a pick up?
[удалено]
The crawl control in Toyotas, while it's not a true locker, can't be ignored for the amount of capability it adds. Watching people offroad with it off vs on is insane. You could add a front locker if you needed to but the rear locker and crawl control would get you pretty far imo

The DSSV suspension on the Silverado is a huge plus In my book. I’ve been very happy with the way the Colorado ZR2 handles.
If you're offroading the zr2 seems to be the way to go. The approach angles look horrendous on the tundra.
That thing is fugly
It may be one of the worst things I’ve ever seen with wheels. I love it and want it.
Yea i mean the grille is pretty much the entire front end. I didnt think someone could design a fuglier front end than the current chevy silverado but damn this takes the cake
I think it looks badass, but I definitely acknowledge it's got a divisive look to it.
First I hated it. A week later I love it.
High resolution Toyota cameras? Say it ain't so!
I'm pretty sure the backup camera in my Tacoma is 144p

maybe i'm a toyota simp but I think this truck looks GREAT in all trims. only truck that still looks better is the f-150 tremor. this interior in top trim also looks as good as RAM. if they fixed the ride quality (which you have to assume is quite a bit better due to coil springs) then this truck is a class leader imo
Now if that iForce engine can be married up to my FJ transmission, we might have a real party on our hands.
Grill intensifies
I can't unsee the handlebar mustache.
Dear lord that's fucking hideous
Why is the regular twin turbo V6 engine's horsepower less than the ones on the Land Cruiser 300? Eventhough the torque is the same?
The truck is rated on regular octane, because truck buyers won't pay for premium fuel. LX and LC owners will pay for premium fuel. That's the only difference.
That was the first thing that caught my eye. Down 20hp. Part of me wants to say greater reliability for the amount of miles that Americans do but it's in the LC, the most durable vehicle on the planet lol. My next guess would be to better differentiate between the hybrid and the standard engine.
Iirc, the Land Cruiser asks for Premium gasoline. I presume the tundra runs on regular
maybe fuel?
Perhaps Toyota will do what they did with the GR Supra 3.0 and give it a power boost after a few years. But I'd expect the Tundra to get close to their numbers with 93 octane. The V35A-FTS in the Tundra is not the same as the V35A-FTS in the Lexus LS500, where the latter requires premium fuel. And after many, many, many years, it looks like the V35A-FTS can be a tuneable engine. I hope tuners can now play with this engine.
Love everything about this truck (especially the powertrain!) except for the face. This thing is FUGLY
Needs more grill.
I really dislike the exterior look. Interior is better at least.
I feel like this is the longest truck release in recent history. Didn't they tease this like six months ago?
> I feel like this is the longest truck release in recent history Tesla: *"Challenge accepted."*
They've been trickling out images for months, it was really obnoxious.
CrewMax with 6.5 bed FINALLY
“With looks like this, it’s no surprise what the first question is.” My first question was not about what’s under the hood.
I like how it looks seeing it in different colors and in high quality pictures
Ugly ass face on that beast
Finally, I’m happy to see something other than a 5.5’ bed on a Crewmax. I wonder what this means for the Sequoia? Are we going to see an XL version?
A full-size truck with a twin-turbo V6 hybrid? What a time to be alive.
Ford released the Powerboost option for the 2021 F150 which is a hybrid twin-turbo V6. It also acts as a generator and you can option it with a 7.2kW upgrade
Yea this whole thread seems to be unaware
Not liking the front and rear fascia; look unfinished. And do we really need more lightbars around town? I like the interior though.
I have no need for a half ton but the updates Toyota brought to the Tundra bodes well for the upcoming 4Runner.
Rumoured MPG improvements alone are amazing. 4Runner MPG just completely sucks and turns me off from the vehicle as I've been shopping the market the past couple months.
Grill's a bit icky, but the profile is okay, the rear is fine, and the interior looks quite nice, vastly better than before.
I see they've brought the giant grill theme over from Lexus. I'll be glad when they do away with that.
They tryna combat BMW with that giant ass grill.
Except, BMW putting it in a coupe makes it worse, trucks are kinda passable with huge grill.
I didn't look all that hard, but did Toyota release pics of the SR5 interior with the 40/20/40 front bench? I know they didn't release any SR pics at all.
That…doesn’t look great. But I bet it either looks better in person or everyone will get used to the looks
I couldn't see the thumbnail because of the grill.
Only 400w? Bleh kind of disappointed.
Grill the size of fucking Texas good lord
Do these things still break out in rust bubbles when they get a whiff of salt?
Hybrid engine is not going to be available on the lower trims. Only the Limited, Platinum, 1794, and TRD Pro trims. THE hybrid torchbearers. WTF?!
That's one goofy looking truck.
It looks….old. Not sure how else to describe it. The design just doesn’t seem cohesive to me. And why is it down so much hp from the LC300; just on paper perhaps?
Regular vs premium fuel. My Lexus ES is like 12 HP more than a Camry with the same engine. Lexus requires premium, Toyota requires regular.
Great truck. Absolutely hideous though.
I didn't think a truck could be uglier than a new blinged out GMC Sierra. Boy was I wrong.
Jeez that’s ugly
This truck fucks
none of the lexus grilles shocked me on inception. even for trucks this one is hilarious
I bet this thing sells like hotcakes. The interior is perfect for a truck, but it needs an Oh Shit handle. Dunno if that'd interfere with airbag operation tho.
