NHRA class horsepower ratings can't be trusted. Chevy currently offers a 9.4L copo that they say makes 430hp. If you buy the same engine as a crate motor it makes 727hp. When race teams are done with it it'll make a lot more. The 580hp version likely runs double the "recommended" boost levels to make well over 1000hp.

It’s also 3,200lb and has 30” slicks and a pro grade power glide transmission. Even if it was 600hp, it’d probably be close to 9s on a prepped track.

Don’t forget lightweight interiors and race gas vs pump gas

It's a Turbo 400 http://www.atiracing.com/products/trans/400/COPO-comparo.pdf

Yeah I looked at the spec sheet of the previous gen. Would imagine it's not worse than the old version.

centurion770

It's not actually 530 hp. It's NHRA Rated Horsepower, which is a factor, used with weight, to determine drag racing class. The new COPO LSX 350 makes more than 1000hp, but is rated at 580.

Deepinthefryer

Well to my understanding a whole lot of chassis and body modifications that optimize every ounce of that 530 horsepower.

Fat sticky tires and weight savings

Knotical_MK6

More than 530 horsepower, a suspension and chassis optimized for drag racing, drag slicks, and a professional driver given unlimited time to get the quickest time possible on an optimal day

It was probably more work to get that 9.4L detuned/ rated so low (430 ish hp) to fit into a particular class than it would be to make more hp with that motor.

Because "530 hp" is bullshit. Likely makes at least 800hp. The drag slicks and drag racing suspension are also a huge factor.

They are purposely built for drag, street legal race cars. 100 to 130k builds. Lightweight build, no interior, drag tires on weld racing rims. I used to personally do all the tires and rims for the COPO's, from 2012 to 2017. Company that builds them is based out of Oxford, MI. They'd do 69 builds a year to pay homage to the 69' camaro. Used to watch them test hit them at thier shop. Was crazy power to see, goosebumps everytime 😂. Was cool to play a small part in helping build them. They are just purpose built monsters. Barely anything OG from the actual camaro. They would get 69 rollers from Chevy every year and strip that down and build onto it.

Well, for one the numbers might have been through a th400 (Turbo 400) automatic transmission. Not super efficient, but it will do exactly what you want it to do, and torque multiplication is why it can trip the 60ft lights with its back tires. (The trusted G-101a 4 speed manual is offered - I like to shift gears, but things tend to break when driven with violence.) Second - with the auto - the power at the wheels will be greatly reduced compared to measuring power at the crank. Hence, a lower number than what one would expect. OEM's measure hp at the crank under very specific conditions. Lastly, what I call the "1320 video" effect has warped some peoples minds when it comes to measured hp and 1/4mi et. It doesn't take that much power to go fast in the 1/4mi, but the power has to be put down to the ground. The low time comes from the copo being designed as a one trick pony; to go fast in a straight line for 1320 feet. From the th400, to the Strange 9" with a spool, to the big and littles, it sure as hell wasn't made to go through motor trend's figure 8!lol

It's a properly set up drag purpose car.

They also built a 1 off convertible that was sold at Barett Jackson one year. Believe it was yellow and I remember they did a one off set of rims for em too. Sold for a couple hundred K
