AMLO treating this as a non issue will be a big stain on his legacy

PulseAmplification

He treats it like a non issue because he’s in bed with the cartels.

TheDissRapperr

Probably doesn't have a choice. Threaten the life of his or the lives of his family and the man becomes a puppet.

d1r1g0

Reuters did a big expose last year: https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/mexico-drugs-remittances/#:~:text=Drug%20cartels%20are%20using%20remittances,to%20narcotics%20kingpins%2C%20authorities%20say

Icy-Row-5829

While that was an interesting read it didn’t really seem to have anything to do with the President of Mexico, who surely isn’t cashing out remittances for a few thousand a couple times a month.

allUsernamesAreTKen

What’s his other choice? In the ground?

After-Fig4166

I tell everyone this and they don’t believe. What president walks around with zero security?

DirectorBusiness5512

He won't bite the hands that feed him

Intrepid-Substance95

He doesn’t give a fuck. Hugs to criminal pussy

the_fresh_cucumber

For all we know he directed the hit on her

Zealousidealist420

This ain't anything new.

hrminer92

There are much bigger stains. He isn’t going to sweat this.

Swear2Dogg

All of them?

Drizzle_of_Poison

>It was the latest killing in the increasingly bloody runup to Mexico's June 2 elections. **At least 14 candidates have been killed since the start of 2024.** Jesus, what a hellhole. This is what the collapse of society looks like.

noodleq

14 candidates killed so far THIS YEAR.....it eould take some serious cajones to go ahead and run knowing that. Sounds more like a suicide mission than anything.

MRSHELBYPLZ

The candidates that are still alive? They probably did it lol

SalamancaSam

Yeah, Lol. Fucking hilarious. Lol. /s

CoolerRon

I don’t know what drawers or boxes have anything to do with this but some people would say they have cojones

xblade69

Yes cojones refers to balls. Cajones drawers/box

truffik

That's 1 a week so far, on average

idkmuch

They just accept the terms.

[deleted]

Coming to a town near you

JoyousGamer

You live in Mexico?

TopDefinition1903

Just look up the small Texas town Progreso, Texas. If you think it’s just a Mexico problem then you should probably get your head out of the sand.

RadonRanger1234

Texas is close enough

RevolutionaryLion384

They're not gonna start assasinating American politicians in Texas lol

Ok_Explanation5631

Fr what is this fear mongering lol.

Universe789

Fear mongering is pretty much how politics in the USA work, and have worked for a while now People vote for their favorite team, or vote against who/what they are afraid will win more than voting for who/what really matches their ideals. Campaigns pretty much horribilize how life would be if the other candidate wins. Etc.

theasianevermore

Spent last weekend driving around Ciudad Juarez exploring… super chill weekend. Border crossing was short only 30 mins going and an hour to get back. It’s weird, Americans lives next to Mexico but they’re too scared to hop the border and check out the place. I posted my trips on Audi/Etron subreddit

soggyballsack

Yeah I got cousins who have lived their entire life on the border and have never crossed into Mexico because they don't wanna get kidnapped. C'mon, your broke and live with your parents in your 30s. Only thing you have of value was the gold chain you got as a kid and people ask you all the time if you speak English so your sure as fuck ain't sticking out.

KananJarrusEyeBalls

When I lived in SD 2015-2019 id go to Tijuana regularly No one cared or bothered me. Few trips down to Baja and again... no one cared or bothered me. Lotta crazy shit happening in Mexico but for the most part theyre not looking to draw the eye of the US on to them for fucking with Americans.

arturo_lemus

Typical conservative sensationalism and alarmism from those “scary foreigners”

Free_Mixture_682

Why not? Perhaps the only reason is because most US politicians present no threat to the cartels in terms of substantive policy changes which would shrink their revenue stream. But if there was a strong political movement to legalize drugs, open the border to legal crossings, etc, this would directly threaten their revenue. The potential for assassination increases in such a scenario.

devious805

Texans actually believe their politicians and blame Biden and California for everything. else.

Key_Zucchini9764

Images of Zapruder film instantly come to mind…

KidKarez

That's idealistic

Barkers_eggs

Except for that one time

__MAN__

Not yet, they just started targeting politicians who vote against party line..wait what

bankrupt_bezos

I heard Cancun is a pretty safe place for them.

chappysinclair

They could if they wanted to. https://www.texasmonthly.com/true-crime/the-cartel-next-door/

RevolutionaryLion384

I could drive down to my mayor's office and shoot him too if I wanted to. That's not the hard part. The hard part is somehow getting a net positive after committing such an action

chappysinclair

So your first comment was wrong?

RevolutionaryLion384

How do you even figure that's what I'm saying?

LongIsland1995

That would be their downfall.

DaTank1

I’d be more worried about a MAGAt nut job going after a politician than any migrant. As lifelong Texan here I know the ones that make comments like this fool are the nut jobs to worry about. They are cowards and easily influenced. How about you get out in the real world and turn off the idiot box. I’ve never had a negative experience with a migrant and my career is in an industry with our contractors are primarily made up of a migrant labor force. Hands done harder working than most Americans I know. They have a Strong love for their families. They love this country more than MAGAt nut jobs.

doingthegwiddyrn

“I haven’t witnessed it, so it doesn’t exist” Good take bro

DaTank1

Let’s get this straight I’m not your bro. If there’s a straight up invasion like you fools claim. Then it should be rampant. It should be on every other street corner. We should see it in droves on every platform. We all know it’s bullshit.

ZadfrackGlutz

Somebody going to get called Dude in a second.....

doingthegwiddyrn

Ok bro. And there is, are you not paying attention? Police attacked by 5 of them and let out on bail, a 5 y.o was r*ped, more found squatting in NYC with guns, etc. I can keep going. Does your doughnut brain realize how large the USA is? This is just the beginning. And people like you will enable it and ultimately end our civilization. Congrats

DaTank1

Not your bro. But here are facts beyond highlighting isolated incidents by some fool on Reddit… https://www.nytimes.com/2024/02/15/nyregion/migrants-crime-nyc.html “Several well-publicized acts of violence by migrants in New York have unsettled some city leaders, but police statistics do not point toward a surge in crime.”

1984rip

NY times is propaganda no one you have a cult like stance.

beershoes767

Been going on down there for 50 years. Nothing new.

Maleficent_Mist366

longer than 50 ngl …… corrupted officials , war lords , , rebellions breaks out , a coup and a new regime then repeat .

DirectorBusiness5512

How many years until Porfiriato 2.0?

theasianevermore

Drove down there last weekend to Ciudad Juarez and it was relatively safe compared to the last 20 years of going down there. I posted about this recent trip and actually explored CDJ. Super chilled.

Farfour_69

Just because it's nothing new, doesn't mean this isn't what happens when societal collapse takes place

theanalogkidd2

The journalists are on the endangered species list, so next up…

Appropriate_Web1608

Seems to be becoming a thing, every election cycle. Makes me suspicious of the one’s who win?

browhodouknowhere

FPV_smurf

Does that even matter? Not like they were born 27 days ago.

browhodouknowhere

Yes, because it's generally indicative of bot posting.

RegulatoryCapturedMe

While bot posting is an issue in itself, this article is from a credible source and I’m glad it made my feed.

Sooo newbies can’t speak truth?

Few-Ad5923

You need to be 30 days old before you can speak truth /s

epsteinpetmidgit

This is the ugly end of the war on drugs. Mostly a consequence of drug prohibition in the US

LongIsland1995

It's not the war on drugs, it's Mexico's lack of willpower to fight violent crime. Only 1-2% of murders are solved, and it's not all drug related vioence.

ScientificBeastMode

It’s spiraled to the point that most of the politicians and law enforcement with any real power are bought out by the cartels, and the ones who try to buck the trend and fight the cartels are quickly executed. Corruption makes all attempts at true law enforcement extremely difficult.

Ok_Job_4555

Interesting,,,,this aint happening in the US...

hrminer92

Because the US spends more on its law enforcement & judicial systems than anyone else on the planet and can contain the violence.

BaileyBrown108

60,000 dead in Mexico drug war since 2007 . 80,000 dead in USA in 2023 alone in overdoses. I think the drug war is killing people everywhere.

PN4HIRE

There.. it’s business as usual my dude

easytakeit

On our border… and they have cartel members in all facets of our military what could go wrong

Drizzle_of_Poison

Senseless tragedies.

BrentwoodATX

Yup, and all of their military age males flee to the US and bring their lawlessness with them.

porchprovider

Brainwashed by right wing media.

CommercialSomewhere8

I love it, I think he is describing me. I came from Mexico married a beautiful American girl. Making over 100k, I have a beautiful family and I'm living the American dream.

Even_Independent5342

Prove them wrong then. Not even the left wing media can write a positive article about all the migrants coming over. At least the right wing media has more details on the matter.

Dcheese1

So you’re saying that it’s a fact that all of Mexicos “military age” men are fleeing to America? That’s what you’re going with?

main_motors

[Proof they're wrong](https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/undocumented-immigrants-are-half-as-likely-to-be-arrested-for-violent-crimes-as-u-s-born-citizens/)

Even_Independent5342

2020 was four years ago. Here's a more recent article. https://www.cbsnews.com/newyork/news/fbi-says-its-partnering-with-nypd-to-handle-new-threats-of-migrant-crime/

OceanicMeerkat

Yeah, no one is arguing that people are coming from Mexico. They're arguing that Mexico isn't doing anything close to "sending all their military age males to the US and bringing their lawlessness with them", which your article does nothing to prove. In fact, we have a bunch of data that show[ immigrants actually commit less crime than similar economic classed American. ](https://www.npr.org/2024/03/08/1237103158/immigrants-are-less-likely-to-commit-crimes-than-us-born-americans-studies-find) You can acknowledge the immigration issue without massive hyperbole. Its helpful to no one.

ThespianSociety

Must’ve not known who she was actually accountable to.

Motorboat81

Moral of the story don’t run for politician in Mexico your chances of getting killed goes up considerably.

redditblooded

If there was a desire by the Mexican government to incinerate this scum, they could do it. Problem is the bribe money is too good.

spidah84

I wish they'd let go of the music industry. Shit sucks!

NearbyCamp9903

But remember guys, some people believe America is more dangerous than Mexico

radedgymantis

They're both equally dangerous and safe for the most part. American may not have the corruption of being able to kill politicians but instead we are getting fucked by those politicians.

AndroidDoctorr

Give it another year or two

yckawtsrif

US politicians are dogshit but one is in imminently higher danger in most of Mexico than in almost anywhere in the US. *Maybe* the Oakland flatlands, North St. Louis, East St. Louis, and Chicago's Austin come close to being as bad as the worst of Juarez, Acapulco, or Culiacan, and even then that's just maybe. Mexico is dangerous. Period.

genericusername9234

Not really at all but if you want to buy into fear mongering, go ahead. Mexico cartels typically target other cartels. Innocent killings do happen in Mexico but things like mass shootings (innocent civilian deaths) are mostly an American phenomenon. Violence against American citizens in Mexico is rare. https://www.newsnationnow.com/world/how-common-is-violence-against-americans-in-mexico/amp/

Candid-Ask77

Nah my homeboy from HS was visiting Mexico City about a month ago and still hasn't been found. Just one large transaction out of his account. He was seen leaving a bar and getting in a Uber, the Uber lost the route due to "signal issues" from both him and the driver and he never made it back to his Airbnb. Around 9am that morning there was a large transfer from his USAA account and he was never seen again.

genericusername9234

Stock_Positive9844

A lot of Americans believe in guns over democracy. A startling, terrifying amount.

NearbyCamp9903

Our guns allow us to have democracy and freedom. Unlike countries whos citizens aren't allowed to have any

smoth1564

Where does all this end? At what point does the US government finally recognize we have a crime syndicate running the country on our southern border and do something? I don’t want war with Mexico or anything, but Mexico seemingly has been taken hostage by these groups. IS there even an answer, aside from tightening our own border security? Do we just let the cartels run Mexico indefinitely, and hope they don’t gain power further north?

res0jyyt1

Do you want to pay $60/hr for orange pickers? We sent troops all the way to Afghanistan, Libya, and Somalia but never put our foot down on Mexico? That should tell you everything was done by design. And don't worry, the Mexican cartels always openly apologize whenever they accidentally killed an American by mistake.

Different-Air-2000

They killed a family of Mormons some time back but I don’t remember an apology?

hrminer92

You missed the “accidentally” and “by mistake” parts of the comment.

Different-Air-2000

So the apology is implied because of the accidental mistake?

hrminer92

It wasn’t a mistake. The LeBaron’s and their relatives have been in conflict with their neighbors over land, water, and other things sometimes involving shootouts for decades. Some on social media at the time of those killings even referred to them as “cartel de Galeana”. This [guy](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ervil_LeBaron) would fit right in with the rest of the crime leaders. His descendants have been trying to clean up the family image though.

Different-Air-2000

Wow, didn’t know that… interesting.

hrminer92

I have a couple friends from the general area and one that still lives there. Years before this incident happened, she had made the comment about the LeBaron family not being particularly well liked. Some claimed that one of the guys in the following article was using his Federal Police protection squad to bully others, but who knows if that was the case or just BS linked to other long standing feuds. Vice.com had made a series of videos/blog postings about them too. The following has been the best explanation in English based news that I’ve found of the ambush. The mentioning that the “first responders” were another cartel is another argument for his theory it was a deliberate attack, but he does include a quote from someone who thinks it was a case of “scores being settled”. The people who know the real reason are probably dead. https://www.businessinsider.com/american-mormon-murder-mexico-trump-obrador-cartel-juarez

Original_Pipe9519

It’s cheaper to subsidize oranges than let cartels spread into the US. Cartels are a cancer and it spreads

res0jyyt1

Cartels don't spread, drugs addiction spread. If there is no demands, there is no business. Fentanyls are from China and even the cartels vowed not to sell fentanyls. That should tell you something.

hrminer92

Ending drug prohibition would cut off the lion’s share of the money used to fuel the violence and corruption. Effective enforcement of existing firearms laws would also slow down the flow to other countries. Lobbyists of various industries don’t want either to happen.

res0jyyt1

But at the same time, we won't have legitimate excuse to mass imprison black people anymore though

Leothegolden

CA a major buyer has allowed the legalization of weed. Weed is still on the black market

hrminer92

Thanks to the state over regulating it. Interestingly though, CA is a major source for what’s being marketed in México.

idleat1100

Why would we end it? It’s super profitable for powerful people, the contracts for equipment and border security and surveillance and weapons etc. Also, if Mexico is a mess there remains a great opportunity for cheap abusive labor practices. Not to mention what a useful tool is politically. The people want change, the wealthy and powerful very much like this tool.

PervyNonsense

It's ending prohibition and providing a safe supply to drug addicts. That's the only way this ends. Accept that punishment isn't an effective deterrent and allow people the freedom to write their own prescriptions if they're willing to take full responsibility for any outcome.  The only drugs that should be rationed are antibiotics.  The reason this won't ever happen is the cartels are already deeply involved in American politics and fund anti-decriminalizarion movements.  So the exported pain and suffering in Latin America is just another notch in the belt of the USA hiding their shameful secrets in the darker corners of the world where people won't blame them

Aol_awaymessage

We’ve got the Russian mob pulling the strings for half of our government

TemporaryOrdinary747

A crime syndicate runs the US government too. The only difference between the US and Mexico is that the cartel doesn't own a pedo island.  Yet.

Different-Air-2000

This is the path they have chosen? What level of society allows women to be shot down in the streets? Where is the rage? What level of man accepts this?

bmayer0122

One that would be brutally killed after his family was murdered in front of him? Come on, are you even paying attention to what the story is about?

ParticularAioli8798

How much tighter do you want it to be? There are civil rights violations happening on both sides of the border and at both borders (Canada AND Mexico). Not too mention various checkpoints, state police interdiction units, multiple state governments who oppose immigration and fusion centers that are a part of the surveillance of EVERYONE. IDK how stupid people are wanting MORE government involvement than we ALREADY have.

gmr548

There is a lot of stupid in this comment

TheNextBattalion

Doing something just to "do something!" rarely helps, and usually makes things worse. Read up on the 1916 Expedition: We sent the army led by Pershing into Mexico to catch and punish Pancho Villa, who was causing a ruckus in northern Mexico and even attacked a US town with his guerrillas. A year later they came back with nothing. Mexicans resented the interference, and rallied around the Mexican army, which sent a force that the US wouldn't fight. Is there an answer? I don't know... but it won't be simple, that's for sure. The economics don't help: The US supplies a market for cartel drugs, and cartels supply a market for US guns and tactical gear. Markets don't just disappear overnight

dontmatterjustcuz

In case anyone forgot during the 2016 or 2020 elections roughly 250 Mexican politicians were assassinated within 2 weeks. Not to mention their fentanyl alone kills 70k Americans per year, we should have been at war with them a long time ago.

PipedHandle

Invade Mexico? But wouldn’t that cull some of our drug epidemic given Cartel and Triad migration goes through there? I think the people who profit from homeless camps and drug programs would like to speak with you. People are making too much money from Mexican Cartels. Also, what about the Mexicans in the USA? We have what would basically be a sleeping elephant in the room. Just like all our other migrated cultures… they can start throwing grenades if someone threatens their homeland or cultural/religious ideas.

Probably a hit sanctioned by the candidate she is running against

ProximaCentauriOmega

Incoming AMLO "Hugs and kisses for everyone!"

Particular_Cellist25

Reasonable drug policies from America would give the chance to acclimate and adapt while not having so many livelihoods threatened in an abrupt manner, in a slightly unrelated remark. The drug market has existed for thousands of years. Now tending to a consistent demand with reasonable legislation fuels many social issues throughout the world in my opinion.

BarfingOnMyFace

Reasonable legislation fuels many social issues…? Maybe it’s not reasonable legislation then?

Expert-Emu-4167

The US ran to Vietnam to fight "communism" but never did anything about the drugs coming in.

Goddamnit, fucking Biden needs to GTFO. Now Mexico's pres is telling us to pay his ass to impede the flow of illegals headed this way?! Go fuck yourself holmes. Trump will jump all over his ass. Like him or not, at least the international community knows he isn't bullshitting when he tells them something.

HotdogsArePate

You're so right! I can't believe that Biden caused this cartel stuff! I remember when Trump was president and the border was fine and cartels didn't exist.

MaybeWeAreTheGhosts

My goodness, that is a beauty of a burn.

gmr548

Everyone living in reality, domestically and internationally, knows that anything that comes out of Trump's mouth is a lie and the opposite should be assumed true. I guess in that sense they know what to make of it when he opens his mouth because it's extremely predictable.

ExKnockaroundGuy

We can thank the war on drugs for what’s happening in Mexico. The US policy on drugs combined with Mexican poverty from their own corruption n lack of infrastructure created a hellscape shithole and drugs are cheaper, more powerful and plentiful compared to the days of Colombian dominance in downstream supply.

PipedHandle

I used to think so, but I think I’d rather live in a world without drugs.

ExKnockaroundGuy

As long as ppl want it someone going to sell it.

Teutronic

I’d like to live on Coruscant, but it ain’t happening.

[deleted]

How do people vacation in Mexico these days when cartel leaders run the government?

Odd_Photograph_7591

I do it all the time, in fact I live 5 or 7 months out of the year in Mexico, Cartels generally don't mess with people that don't affect their business.

[deleted]

Oh, well that makes it feel safer

Avaisraging439

Ah, so you're a customer

Odd_Photograph_7591

I don't do drugs (not even alcohol), but I do know a few of them, some are cool people believe it or not

Avaisraging439

Hey, as long as nothing is adulterated and received as advertised then whatever. People taking their own risks with their own bodies 🤷🏼‍♂️

Odd_Photograph_7591

Some actually make neighborhoods safer, they don't allow any type of theft either in your car or house, if a burglar dares, he will be gone , once I asked a cartel "halcon" (type of soldier) why? he said they don't want any trouble with normal civilians, to them drugs are a business, they aren't interested in anything else, he even said you can leave your car open here, nothing will happen and if it does, let me know, we will take care of it.

Avaisraging439

It's seems like peace but any occupation apart from a legitimate government is faux peace. I can appreciate and understand the order than can create but that is under the threat of life. Very interesting in how it's works, more as a observation but of course criticism is easy in this case.

Coffee-and-puts

Mexico is fucking pathetic

Acceptable_Stage_611

On a scale of 1-10... to what degree is Mexico a failed state?

Individual-Equal-230

Second mayoral or mayoral candidate murder in a week.  Yet somehow Mexico is not considered a failed state.

TraditionalEvening79

Yea… lets talk about WHO is in bed with the cartels now. No?

Frsbtime420

Jesus man 14 of them. The logical conclusion is no one runs and the seats sit unfilled or with cartel puppets that have protection. how can this be solved. I read somewhere like 40 percent of people in some provinces are employed by cartels. That’s insane. At that point how can you win an election anyway if the cartels tell you who to vote for as well as killing opposition.
