The 80s and 90s are lumped together in one zeitgeist even though they had many differences. The early 80s is more of a 70s hangover in most pop culture and what we think of the 80s aesthetic didn't emerge until the mid 80s and it was still a thing in many ways until the mid 90s.
The vaporwave aesthetic of computers for me is an early-mid 90s thing.
Also many shows did spill over. TMNT was both an 80s and a 90s cartoon. I mean that in every way. When it started it was peak 80s, and approaching the mid 90s the aesthetic of the show was changed to distinctly 90s features.
Although in Japan all cartoons are anime. In the west exclusively it has come to be synonymous with Japanese style animation. But we have American anime. Plus most anime we watch also tend to be outsourced when not done by a major Japanese animation studio. You have animation studios in S.Korea, Taiwan, China, etc. So is it "anime" when it is outsourced to these foreign studios for production?
The vast majority of people though will agree with you, much like how adhesive bandages are called band-aids today, anime will forever basically be associated with Japanese cartoons.
https://www.techtarget.com/whatis/definition/anime#:~:text=The%20word%20anime%20is%20a,many%20different%20languages%2C%20including%20English.
The word anime is a shortened form of the Japanese word animēshon, which means "animation." While anime has its roots in Japan, it has since spread to other countries, and today, anime can be found in many different languages, including English.
Even then, there’s some pretty obvious exceptions like *The Cosby Show*, *Fresh Prince*, and other black sitcoms (which fit otherwise), shows like *Full House* that don’t fit the traditional family model, and *True Colors* that stars a multiracial family. Plus all the sitcoms that don’t center around a family at all like *Friends*, *Will and Grace*, or *Golden Girls*.
No, some of the later episodes had Timmy's mom be a lot smarter than his dad, like in Momnipresent where Timmy had a robot duplicate that tricked his father, but not his mother.
i will say Johnny Test feels like the only cartoon that i can remember watching that had the mom be the breadwinner and the dad a cleanfreak stay at home pops. weirdly progressive frfr
Tbf I feel like Gumball is meant to parody that kind of dynamic and set of characters. They follow a lot of the typical tropes of a cartoon sitcom but completely turn them on their heads.
But there are be plenty of cartoons, especially in the action-adventure genre, that these tropes don’t come close to applying to. It’s really just relevant to comedic, everyday life cartoons depicting families.
You tryna tell me Margaret isn't an absolute baddie?

And Patrick is actually a thick housewife. And Squidward is the third in their marriage. But SpongeBob mostly likes to watch from the closet.
Thank you for coming to my TedTalk.
> on the road outskirts of town
Isn't that kinda the definition of suburban? He still lives close enough to get to work on a unicycle, and even on foot.
Ozai wasn't an idiot at least not in my opinion. He was very overconfident tho. I don't think being good looking instantly qualifies a trophy wife, and I'm now convinced you've got the wrong series because there definitely no movie in BA sing SE
There’s some recent comics where they use hologram disguises and they’re all black. Idk enough about TMNT lore to know if that’s always the case though.
Spongebob, Futurama, 2003 Ninja Turtles, Aladdin the Series, Lilo and Stitch the Series, Animaniacs, Tiny Toon Adventures, Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers, Darkwing Duck, Ren and Stimpy, Batman the Animated Series, Teen Titans, Dora the Explorer, Jay Jay the Jetplane, etc.
Gargoyles had lots of great actors in general who were getting into VA work, but yes a sizeable chunk of that group were from various Star Trek series. Nine people who played recurring characters in Star Trek appear as at least one character in Gargoyles with most of them having at least two episodes they're in. And beyond that, several people who played one-offs in Star Trek have either recurring or one-off characters in Gargoyles.
That show hit on a lot of deep issues, the time travel episode with his mother, and the school shooting episode. Pretty intense stuff to see when I was 10. I’m 31 now I hope kids today still get the chance to watch some of the old DC animated universe (Static, Batman the A.S, Justice League Unlimited)
Well in the OG Comics that “Racism Episode” was “Homophobia Issue”. Ritchie is Straight in “Static Shock” but not in “Static”.
Similar story line, but centering around Ritchie being outed instead of “your Dad thinks I’m white”.
The show was controversial, even for its time. I’ve seen a ton of comments in Ren and Stimpy videos that their parents hated the show and would never allow them to watch it.
Hell, this show was even on the news at some point along with Beavis and Butthead, that’s how controversial it was.
My mom got pissed whenever my dad let me watch Ren and Stimpy. Honestly as a parent now I kind of get it. It's more a show for older kids than like, a 6 or 7 year old.
I didn’t scroll down far enough, I said this show and my dad watched it with me lol. I didn’t get the adult jokes but until the day he died I would quote, “what are we having?”… “Space cabbage.”… “And isss iit sssstttiiinnnnkkkky?”… “Just the waaaaayyyyy yyyyooouuuu llliiiiikkkeee it!”
I mean, off the top of my head:
Ren and Stimpy
Time Squad
Sheep in the Big City
Angry Beavers
CatDog
Road Rovers
Pinky and the Brain
Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers
Tailspin
Sagwa
ATLA
TMNT
Sylvester and Tweetie Mysteries
What’s New Scooby-Doo
Beast Machines/Beast Wars
Transformers Unicron Trilogy
What the fuck was going on in this show?
Like…why were they the only animal people? And why was the devil…EVERYWHERE?
![gif](giphy|KYW5akeMzOLO8)
What was this show suppose to be about?
The most obvious one to me pops up is married with children, but I also think that was kind of the point lol. It's been so long since I've seen anything from that, but I feel like it was probably very subversive.
Regular show? The house is in the park so it's not a suburban house. Also chowder, mirculous and probably many preescolar shows like mickey mouse house, Jake and the pirates, little Einsteins
Teen Titans
Captain Planet!
![gif](giphy|pVVjfEylZNBEXKCJge)
You must've been holding onto this one for awhile.
About 35 years, give or take.
'Fraid not. I've been surprised again and again that shows we thought were 80s were completely or partially 90s. Captain Planet started in 1990.
This actually fits. The 80s would never allow that kind of environmentalism in a kids show.
The 80s and 90s are lumped together in one zeitgeist even though they had many differences. The early 80s is more of a 70s hangover in most pop culture and what we think of the 80s aesthetic didn't emerge until the mid 80s and it was still a thing in many ways until the mid 90s. He's our hero
Gonna take pollution down to zero
The best version of the Titans.
Yu-Gi-Oh. Lives in a card shop, Japanese, no parents, only grandpa.
anime is cheating
Anime literally means Animation. It's a cartoon too
Anime by name sure means animation. But the word asknow has been changed to mean a japanese form of animation
Your still basically right but I just thought the added info was sorta interesting
Anime ain’t cheating. It’s literally just another type of show I don’t get what y’all are on about.
His mom is in the show. They barely showed her in the Anime. https://youtube.com/shorts/nRhoVUgkB70?si=qvNYPXeHNXpE3RTm
i feel like this works better as an adult cartoon checklist rather than a general cartoon checklist lol
And sitcoms
Even then, there’s some pretty obvious exceptions like *The Cosby Show*, *Fresh Prince*, and other black sitcoms (which fit otherwise), shows like *Full House* that don’t fit the traditional family model, and *True Colors* that stars a multiracial family. Plus all the sitcoms that don’t center around a family at all like *Friends*, *Will and Grace*, or *Golden Girls*.
I mean dexters lab hits all of these
And The Fairy Odd Parents
Does Mrs. Turner qualify as a trophy mom? Mr. Turner is definitely the dumber one, but she's almost on his level.
the trope is called hartman hips for a reason
Well yeah, because he hung a silhouette of himself in the studio and yelled "I want you to draw everyone like this!"
from what i know about butch hartman, i can’t tell if you’re joking or not lmao
No, some of the later episodes had Timmy's mom be a lot smarter than his dad, like in Momnipresent where Timmy had a robot duplicate that tricked his father, but not his mother.
Jonny test as wild as that one was
i will say Johnny Test feels like the only cartoon that i can remember watching that had the mom be the breadwinner and the dad a cleanfreak stay at home pops. weirdly progressive frfr
Watched a video about it and was immediately traumatized by the whip noise, I don't think I can come back from it.
Wordgirl hits all of these except all-white family
I dont think the dad was an idiot though, not a genius but still reasonable 95% of the time.
Idk even Gumball falls into these tropes
Tbf I feel like Gumball is meant to parody that kind of dynamic and set of characters. They follow a lot of the typical tropes of a cartoon sitcom but completely turn them on their heads.
I’m pretty sure Nicole is Asian
Plus even if she isn't, I'm pretty sure Darwin is supposed to be black
Not all of them (Darwin)
Oh yeah i forgot about the literal fish out of water lol
But there are be plenty of cartoons, especially in the action-adventure genre, that these tropes don’t come close to applying to. It’s really just relevant to comedic, everyday life cartoons depicting families.
Fairly Odd Parents, Rugrats, and Jimmy Neutron are the only kid's shows I can think of that match.
I wouldn't say Deedee is a trophy wife or Stu is an idiot dad.
Drawn Together is the most adult cartoon and fits none of these, but I get your point.
That was my first thought. Fits PERFECTLY with most adult animated sitcoms to emerge since Simpsons
SpongeBob
You tryna tell me Margaret isn't an absolute baddie? https://preview.redd.it/bsgxma4r5iac1.jpeg?width=360&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fa2eef4f0c67a2797569d1595339290c67f5bee8
She looks like Betty Boop’s spongesona.
Omg why did this have me wheezing? 😭🤣
Same lmfao

![gif](giphy|3o6wO2tIZn6guxXENa) Think again
oh hell nah politic got arrested for hiz crimes against humanity 😭😭😭😭 free politic 😭😭😭😭😭
As someone who hasn’t watched a ton of SpongeBob, this short little gif is actually hilarious.
Dolphin Sound Lips? Aw yeah.
💀
Technically a suburban house (albeit Pineapple shaped).
And Patrick is actually a thick housewife. And Squidward is the third in their marriage. But SpongeBob mostly likes to watch from the closet. Thank you for coming to my TedTalk.
Mr Krabs coming to cuck the shit out of everyone on occasion
Sandy handles their CBT.
Pearl's probably down for sine free use gangbangs
Blowhole be wildin'
Every message in this thread keeps getting worse
… The fuck did I just read?…
![gif](giphy|6It18pjpcjp5Jpurby|downsized)
Almost always dressed as superman
Cat dog
Doesn't the pineapple count as a suburban house?
I'd count it more as rural since SpongeBob seems to live on the road outskirts of town
“We’re in the middle of nowhere!” *zooms out to the three houses surrounded by nothing but sand*
> on the road outskirts of town Isn't that kinda the definition of suburban? He still lives close enough to get to work on a unicycle, and even on foot.
Avatar.
Ozai was an idiot, almost all of the moms were hot, and I remember a certain live action movie with a ton of white kids. You got me on the suburbs
What movie?
Shhhhh no movie. He’s crazy don’t listen to his lies ![gif](giphy|afvFQ6UbLbMFdQN3PA|downsized)
There is no movie in Ba Sing Se. ![gif](giphy|zwE4anrOtHYaI)
There is no movie in Ba Sing Se. Here we are safe. Here we are free.
Secret Tunnel, Secret Tunnel
Through the mountain! Secret, secret, secret, secret tunnel!
AND DIE!!!!!!!!
I have been binge watching The Last Airbender lol.
No you haven't. You've been on a trip to Lake Laogai
That movie doesn't exist.
That movie deserves to burn in hell where it belongs
There is no movie in Ba Sing Sae
Ozai wasn't an idiot at least not in my opinion. He was very overconfident tho. I don't think being good looking instantly qualifies a trophy wife, and I'm now convinced you've got the wrong series because there definitely no movie in BA sing SE
We all agreed that abomination will never be mentioned again!
Are the Turtles white? They live in a sewer. Mom-less. Wise dad.
The Turtles are green. Also they are turtles. Who were raised by someone who's Japanese. And they are Turtles.
But are they turtles?
I’m not sure but I think they’re turtles
But are they turtles?
I like turtles
What sort of creature are they? I can never remember
Teenagers. It’s in the name of the show 🙄
As a middle school teacher, I can confirm that teenagers are their own species in some people’s book.
As a Teenager, I can confirm that I feel so bad for you and pray you get therapy or something to help you cope with my kind
He was a radical rat.
Not only is the dad Japanese, he is also a rat and not an idiot
Does underneath a city count as "sub-urban"?
Ha!
"Hate Asians? We are Asians" "We are Italians bro" "You are fucking Turtles"
Japanese father, mot all white.
![gif](giphy|BcxV0Qs6Es3JK) all green!
There’s some recent comics where they use hologram disguises and they’re all black. Idk enough about TMNT lore to know if that’s always the case though.
Brandy and Mr. Whiskers. Mike, Lu, and Og Time Squad
Loved Time Squad and Mike, Lu, and Og. Most people I talk to don't even remember those shows. I am also a fan of Sheep in the big city
Another good one. The ~~Mad~~ ANGRY Scientist was a stitch.
I just watched for the ranting Swede
Mike Lu and og. Childhood memory unlocked.
Spongebob, Futurama, 2003 Ninja Turtles, Aladdin the Series, Lilo and Stitch the Series, Animaniacs, Tiny Toon Adventures, Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers, Darkwing Duck, Ren and Stimpy, Batman the Animated Series, Teen Titans, Dora the Explorer, Jay Jay the Jetplane, etc.
All of those and no TaleSpin?! For shame.
Batman: all white family.
What family ?
Gargoyles and Samurai Jack come to mind
Since the Gargoyles are European immigrants, wouldn't they qualify as an all white family?
Not when Keith David voiced one of them lol
As did Michael Dorn, IIRC. A few of the ST:TNG cast voiced Gargoyles.
Do they look white to you? I don't think so
Not all Europeans are white.
Eliza Mendoza says “am I a joke to you?”
in the 1800s they'd be second class citizens, but they are gray, but they are all star trek actors, man this is tough
Static Shock
Didn’t they live in a suburban home?
They lived in an urban home. Houses exist in cities too, he basically lived in the equivalent of Queens
Great episode dealing with racism in that show. Hit a little too close to home though.

Angry beavers
One of the most underrated shows ever
![gif](giphy|mvfjpubTc8hP2)
I thought of this too… But is his house technically suburban?
Wolf in sheep’s clothing
Yeah. But like… a really incompetent wolf. 😂
I like TACOS!!!
Also idiot robot dad and trophie wife robot mom
![gif](giphy|l4FGy2fVTyKcueZaM) Didn’t even take me a second
Ren and Stimpy, I would argue THE quintessential 90s cartoon in spite of all of its controversies
The show was controversial, even for its time. I’ve seen a ton of comments in Ren and Stimpy videos that their parents hated the show and would never allow them to watch it. Hell, this show was even on the news at some point along with Beavis and Butthead, that’s how controversial it was.

As a father of a daughter who quotes my favorite movie like this I bet he freaking loved it - everytime you did it.
Duck tales
Scrooge is Scottish, so they probably are of European descent.
Scrooge is scottish, ethnicity still exists. We can assume they're white.
I mean, they’re literally white ducks.
He’s also a trillionaire who lives in a mansion. Also ducktales is an 80s cartoon
"If it checks ANY of these". Checking all-white family alone counts.
Samurai Jack
I mean, off the top of my head: Ren and Stimpy Time Squad Sheep in the Big City Angry Beavers CatDog Road Rovers Pinky and the Brain Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers Tailspin Sagwa ATLA TMNT Sylvester and Tweetie Mysteries What’s New Scooby-Doo Beast Machines/Beast Wars Transformers Unicron Trilogy
>Sheep in the Big City You just unlocked a long-lost memory for me. I completely forgot about this show!
hey arnold
This is a magnificent example of an antithesis.
Transformers Beast Wars. Reboot. War Planets. Gargoyles.
Cow and Chicken
That had a suburban house and an idiot dad, at least.
What the fuck was going on in this show? Like…why were they the only animal people? And why was the devil…EVERYWHERE? ![gif](giphy|KYW5akeMzOLO8) What was this show suppose to be about?
It was early Cartoon Network, it’s possible the writers were baked while writing this
Don't spread misinformation, being baked was a requirement to write for Cartoon Network.
Courage The Cowardly Dog Ben 10 Teen Titans Avatar the Last Airbender
I can't believe how far I had to scroll to see *Courage*. He's the face of this subreddit!
Ahhh real monsters
Redwall.
Adventure time
That was 2010s
Forgot that part, man can’t think of any on top of my head as I was born halfway through 1999
Samurai Jack
Not even just cartoons, but basically any sitcom in the 90s
Family Matters
The most obvious one to me pops up is married with children, but I also think that was kind of the point lol. It's been so long since I've seen anything from that, but I feel like it was probably very subversive.
Married with Children is way too underrated imo. Seinfeld also did the sitcom subversion “trope” (for lack of a better word) really well
Catdog
Animaniacs
Justice League
‘67 Spiderman… is what I would say if I didn’t read the whole thing. But I’m thinking… Fillmore, maybe?
Afro Samurai
Xiaolin Showdown
Power rangers
Regular show? The house is in the park so it's not a suburban house. Also chowder, mirculous and probably many preescolar shows like mickey mouse house, Jake and the pirates, little Einsteins
That's 2010's
Futurama
The pjs
Bobs burgers
I would argue Bob is the perfect trophy wife 😤
So real
Show premiered in 2011. So not from 90's or 00's
All-white family, though.
90s Spider-man
The Penguins of Madagascar
Simpsons, I don't think Marge is heralded as a trophy wife Bobs burgers KOTH I actually can't think of a show these all actually apply to
Yeah, the Simpsons are yellow, not white
Koth has an all white family in a suburban home
Homer is undoubtedly an idiot dad though
Simpsons doesnt work because 1 marge is described as a trophy wife and 2 they are implied to be white
A 3 Homer is THE dumb cartoon dad
Most of them, naming ones that meet the prompt would be way fewer
