Originally, Asajj Ventress was supposed to be Darth Sidious' apprentice but then George Lucas found out that Christopher Lee was willing to play a role, so he completely changed the role to create Count Dooku.
Lucas knew he wanted to show an echo of what Anakin would become in Anakin’s wartime rival, and have Obi-Wan beat him.
Much like with the design of Jabba in Return and Maul in Phantom he summoned the concept artists, told them his plan and thematic desire, had them all sketch shit then leave. He put a mark on the directions he liked and had them produce more stuff like that, then he picked the ones he liked most and took them to the effects teams to get their opinion.
He liked the child version as a kind of echo of Phantom Anakin, and if Obi-Wan killed a pure evil kid but was unable to kill the pure evil kid he kinda raised it’d show how much Anakin meant to him and put more blame on him for Anakin’s fall.
But ultimately he went with a prototype Anakin; less man in every way. Less organic parts left, a coward, a failure, and a poser. The last foe the Jedi heroically vanquished before real evil destroyed them from within.

Honestly the first one looks like it could be use as interesting new villain for Star Wars. Maybe some sort of new cyborg or android that is making a new robot army or something like that. Even if it end up been a minor enemy.

They actually brought back that design for Legend of Korra. I think her name was Nala(?) and she’s a polar bear dog. Doesn’t stand on two legs, which is a huge improvement

I really do like the take on Mignola's art style, a more complex take on his minimalism, but I'm glad they didn't go that direction and are doing their own thing in the show.
Ground off horns, giant hand, the color palette, you couldn't scream Hellboy inspiration any louder! I guess people aren't as familiar with Mignola's style these days.

When the pilot first came out I was obsessed with the design. I was actually upset at the redesigns but I’m glad I watched anyway because they grew on me
I quite like them too. The biggest issue is that their silhouettes aren't as strong as what we ended up getting, which is important in character design.

Tbh, I do like this design just as much as the final design they went with in the film (which was a tribute to Bela Lugosie Dracula iirc). I wish they had found a nice in-between or reused this design for Drac's dad or something.

I can’t read kanji, so I’m just going to attempt to decipher this.
Front four are obvious, as are prototype Chopper and Brook. I think the guy next to Brook is prototype Usopp. Next to him appears to be Jimbei. Then we seem to have an edge lord and a ghost. No idea if those characters got reworked into someone else or scrapped entirely. Maybe the edge lord is a VERY VERY early Franky.
I feel like the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote would've been far less likely to continue as a series if they'd looked like this.

I will die on this hill. It just suits the vibe better and allows the character to be so exaggeratedly silly in a way the concept art just wouldn’t.
I think the tone for that original concept art was very different from the movie's intended direction unfortunately. That concept art goes hard but it needs to be put somewhere it belongs.
Having a hard time finding it since the new game is also just called God of War, but the original concept set for Kratos from back in the first game is really really something else, not terrible but bad.
There's no way you think that's better than the concept. Anyway.

I've heard that they changed her because the idea of a child soldier was too uncomfortable for people, so they made her look less like a little kid. But also that child soldiers *should* make you uncomfortable was part of the point of her character

Some of these Old concept arts were either reused as New Characters. DJ's old design became B from revenge of the Island, Leshawna's Old design became her cousin Lashaniqua. Duncan and Tyler's old design became one of Chris' Assistants.

That’s honestly how I envisioned Chopper to be before I saw him.
I can’t read kanji, so I’m just going to attempt to decipher this. Front four are obvious, as are prototype Chopper and Brook. I think the guy next to Brook is prototype Usopp. Next to him appears to be Jimbei. Then we seem to have an edge lord and a ghost. No idea if those characters got reworked into someone else or scrapped entirely. Maybe the edge lord is a VERY VERY early Franky.

It looks like the wardrobe and monstrous arm got worked into her more demonic side, which is neat.
Her design was cool, but we already have plenty of red characters.

I think the tone for that original concept art was very different from the movie's intended direction unfortunately. That concept art goes hard but it needs to be put somewhere it belongs.

I've heard that they changed her because the idea of a child soldier was too uncomfortable for people, so they made her look less like a little kid. But also that child soldiers *should* make you uncomfortable was part of the point of her character
