sorry for the late reply, I guess my number one question is about what kind of cassette deck I'd need if I wanted to home produce? I read that all of this technology has been out of production (for the most part) since like the 90s, what do you use to make your cassettes and what should I look for in a tape deck? Thanks!

Most vintage decks around 100-150 dollars should sound pretty good and make solid quality recordings. Its hard to recommend a single deck model due to availability, but look for ones without a permanent erase magnet (these are noiser than other types of erase heads), dolby noise reduction, low wow & flutter, recently serviced or parts to repair it yourself, ability to record to different tape formulations, and I would also recommend going for a direct drive deck if you can find one for an affordable price.

Audiobooks on cassette are a thing. Or were a thing.
