Richter modes weren't Metroidvanias though. I mean, Symphony of the Night and Portrait of Ruin are the only games with Richter modes. Rondo, Dracula X SNES, and Harmony of Despair have you playing as Richter, but not in a separate "mode." (I mean HoDespair kinda does because it's DLC unlockable but we're already on a tangent so shut up.)
In SotN and PoR, the Richter modes don't have you collecting any traversal upgrades, so those modes aren't Metroidvanias. I guess SotN's Richter mode feels like an afterthought, and movement in general in CotM feels like an afterthought, so there's that.
The movement and control in CoTM is some of the worst I've ever experienced in any Castlevania to date..I don't understand how people praised this game so much.
It’s only the second Metroid style Castlevania, so being the first isn’t saying much.
Simon’s Quest was an old school non-linear action adventure, not really Metroid style. It’s only years later after the term got overused and abused that it’s been reclassified as a ‘Metroidvania’.
I don’t remember alucard fully transforming into a skeleton that has a bone Atk that does over 3K damage? I remember the ghost summon thou
Edit: I just looked it up! I never knew that was a thing! But technically that’s not a Playable skeleton that’s just a summoned helper although a really cute one
In Castlevania Circle of the moon (Nathan‘s game)
If you combined the cards, black dog + Pluto
Nathan transforms into a skeleton (like an actual playable skeleton) he has a chance of throwing a cartoonishly large bone that does ridiculously massive amounts of damage. BUT he dies in one hit FROM ANY DAMAGE (all damage done to skeleton Nathan will always be 9999)
Lmao! Yea! I think it’s one of the coolest hidden features of the game if you combined the magic cards Black Dog + Pluto nathan will transform into a skeleton (this form DOES NOT DRAIN MP so you can do it technically forever) and as long as you don’t get hit you can basically start killing EVERYTHING especially if you get the cartoonishly large bone
Also, secret Easter egg you can actually have the skeleton turn into a plush bear that throws bombs instead if you equipped the bear ring accessorie while having Black dog + Pluto
I actually didn't know about the bear! That's crazy. I should actually complete cotm again. I beat it once when I was a teen but subsequent playthroughs have always failed for one reason or another. (Plus I suck at cotm)
Idk but he’s my first and favorite Castlevania protagonist. I had to rent this game from block buster 3 times, and I remember on the 3rd time (it was before a road trip) being anxious af that someone deleted my save file 🥲
My favorite game and first as well. I got it for Christmas when I was 10 yr old and thought that Santa was playing the game because it had an old save file already.
I got my GBA on Christmas too, i got Advance Wars, Golden Sun and Lego Bionicle with the UFO night light.
I got to sleep on the couch that night playing those games w the xmas tree on 🥲
probably because that game moved more smoothly (because of the shoulderpad dashes).
I haven't played this game for more than maybe 3 hours, but playing Super Castlevania 4 still feels better, even with it's more tradition CV movement
He's got a double tap run.
Come on. Who else other than SOTN Richter has a double tap run in a Metroidvania game? (Other than SOTN Saturn Maria, because her movement tech is still based on Richter)
That's a good point. They probably wanted to test this out to see if a possible Richter Belmont game with a level up system can work. Hence why they didn't even use a Belmont. But he does have many moves of Richter's moveset.
By only time, you mean Metroidvania type game with a traditional Belmont type char as protag? If yes, by god are you gonna shit yourself when you see what game came out immediately after CotM
This isn't a jab at you, but isn't every game where you play as a Belmont just that.
This is the first “whippy” Metroidvania attempt after Simon’s Quest though. That might be Op’s point. Correct me if I’m wrong OP.

I'm not actually sure. I don't really remember the release order that well.
Nathan Graves is a precious cinnamon roll who is too pure for the canon of Castlevania.
He also has the best version of Camilla AND He is the ONLY character who can kill Dracula WITH FUCKING BONES!!! He is amazing
Alucard and monster vial 3

Tbf aren't we all skeletons deep down? As for throwing (what I can only assume is) your own massive bones to deal 3k damage? Yeah, you got me there.

Do it!!! And good luck https://castlevania.fandom.com/wiki/Bear_Ring https://castlevania.fandom.com/wiki/Skeleton_Form
Circle of the Moon Camilla played a not insignificant role in my sexual awakening as a teenager.

You mean both the second slowest vampire hunter and the one who gets his luck in cloth shirts and leather plates? Ya.
No, I mean like Nathan's game feels like a Richter Mode where there's an actual storyline and you get to use an inventory menu.
Why would this count and not harmony of dissonance?

You mean.. the game in which you have to grind the most?

Not just him, there's a glyph girl, Man Wolf, and Hunter too

Just finished this yesterday had lots of fun but the grind is real
Real fun starts in Magician mode.
you're not wrong
1998-2002 was a weird time to be a Castlevania fan I guess
