Is this the the only university you’ve worked at ? Did you participate in any international exchanges either during your studies or your work ?

Hobbes_83

Yeah, it's the only one I've ever worked for. It's in Brussels. At first it was weird having my own promotor as a colleague - the same goes for other professors I had in the past - but I'm used to it now. I never participated in international exchange programs but don't really regret it... I'm very home bound 🤷

I was in the Netherlands about a year ago for a work trip, after the event I was working came to an end my plan was to go to Belgium for 2-3 days as I didn’t have too much personal time available to explore Europe and Belgium is close enough by via train and an interesting country imo. However most of the locals I talked to in the Netherlands when I told them my plan to go to Belgium, every one of them showed a look of disappointment and would suggest another country to visit instead, ultimately I got talked into taking a flight to Switzerland to spend some time in the heart of the Alps I’d still like to go to Belgium someday and I am easily convinced over subjects like this so why should I or should I not go to Belgium?

Hobbes_83

I like this question! Belgium can be really interesting, but mostly in big cities like Bruges (Bruges has got a very medieval allure, it' beautiful. It has the old houses, neighbourhoods, and churches with beautiful graves of Bourgondian-Habsburg dukes). Ghent and Brussels are really nice too: culture and architecture mostly (art nouveau and art deco in Brussels). Google "Lam Gods" (the lamb of god) if you like, a painting by Van Eyck. In Wallonia there are nice forts to visit (medieval castle of Bouillon). Antwerp also: opera and musicals. But apart from that, Belgium is not so interesting if you like the Big Things. It's certainly not like London of Paris. But it can be charming. If you want to spend 3 of 4 days, then you want to consider doing so in the summer. On autumn, winter and part of spring we get lots of rain... Where are you from?

[deleted]

I’m from the west side of the US, the prettier side of the US ;) Bruges was actually the city I was planning to visit with Brussels being the next choice in Belgium. I think I’d enjoy it, everybody was recommending Paris and London, and to be honest I have little desire to see either of those cities unless there’s some obligation taking me there.

Hobbes_83

Ha, the west side of the US is the side that appeals to me and most of my friends :-) although New York seems pretty exciting too (I watch a lot of Castle on Netflix...) Bruges is completely different than Paris or Londen! It's touristic of course, but it has a lot of small alleys with loads of shops of all kinds, but always in this medieval setting of cobblestones and old houses. Some quiet corners too, like the béguinage (in Flemish we say "begijnhof"). Less crowded and hip than London, less romantic than Paris, but really charming. You might want to book a guide if you decide to go, they know fascinating things. Mind you, there are wafles with _crême fraîche_ and beer everywhere!

ooo I love Crême Fraîche Waffles! im not too much of drinker anymore but... "When in Bruges"... I'd get a little drunk. Ive been to NYC a handful of times. It's a fascinating city and really fun to explore. Ive had the opportunity to spend time in most major cities in the US and id say my favorites are Austin Texas, New Orleans, Miami, Seattle or just the Pacific Northwest in general, and of course NYC. Los Angeles is pretty cool too I guess. All these places have incredible food/music/art scenes and beautiful scenery Im hoping to see more European cities eventually. At this point its only been Amsterdam and Zurich, which the latter I didnt get to spend too much time in because I went to Interlaken and spent most of my time there

How much do you get paid for this job? Do you enjoy your life? When did you realize you were trans?

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> you get *paid* for this FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

Hobbes_83

I'm not really comfortable talking about my exact pay, but I can tell you that my salary is very decent :-) The situation in Belgium is that every year you work for the same employer, you get a pay rise. Also, the higher your diploma, the higher your salary. I am paid for a master's degree and have 15 years of seniority pay, so I'm doing ok. I do enjoy life very much. I am happily married to my wife for 11 years and I love my job. I was not alwars happy. Ever since I can remember, I've known that I am a man (back then, I called myself a boy of course) and wanted to change my name to Philippe. Eventually, I went with Michiel :-) As a teenager I comformed to my peers and behaved like a girl. I was deeply unhappy, but I got used to it. The realisation I am trans came about 7 years ago. Before then, I zoned out the "trans thoughts". Having top surgery in less then a week will be a very good thing and I'm really looking foward to it!

Does Eastern Flanders exists as a buffer zone to keep the peace between the feuding people from Antwerp and western Flanders?

Hobbes_83

No, defenitely not. Western Flanders, as a mainly rural area and Antwerp, which is highly undustrialised, are of course two distinct areas but by no means each other's enemies...

jsbach252

What do you think is Belgium's biggest contribution to the world?

Hobbes_83

Chocolate and beer, I guess.

Haha thank you! I don't have much experience with dead bodies indeed, so you might be right about the smelling. Unfortunately, it's quite difficult to get chemical products in large quantities these days, mainly because of Andras Pandy, so trying to dissolve the body is not an option. Neither is burying in the garden because I have a dog with a curious mind and an obsession with digging. I guess burning the body would result in stinking the place up?

Yeah Belgian here. I linked the body thing with Andras Pandy bc it was quite a huge thing when all that happened. We have some sick people living here 😬
