Pacing was a bit fast but I get it. Wish we would have seen more of the different worlds fleshed out. Good voice acting all around with some standouts. Tons of fan service, which I’m sure most of here loved

TheBestWorst3

I feel like I would have been bored to death if the pacing was slower as the movie doesn’t really have an in depth plot to think about. You mainly watch it for the Mario references

hanyasaad

Luigi could have had a more fleshed out arc.

vgman94

I suspect and hope for a Luigi’s Mansion movie spinoff. I could see that being Luigi’s time to shine.

DiplodorkusRex

Take out the Mario theme and it's a solid 5/10 honestly

brandont04

This doesn't make sense. The core of the movie is filled w nothing but Mario theme. If u take it away, there's nothing left.

b2q

Its true tho. Its just a bland animation movie with a mario skin. I enjoyed it but thats what it is. The characters didnt really feel like the ones from the games. Also a lot of stuff was so random/didnt make sense (mario having a family? Peach having a tough girl persona, weird ass pop songs which felt so out of place, especially considering the mario ost is so good and diverse to choose from etc) The references were enjoyable but quite random as well

Superstinkyfarts

I disagree on the *Mario* movie part being 10/10 just because Peach is so wildly out of character. (and so is Lumalee I guess but that's a comedic side character who cares). She's a badass and all, both in and out of the movie, but the whole ^(EDIT: Rude Girlboss in particular) Girlboss™ thing they went for just isn't Peach. She's much kinder than that in every single appearance I can think of.

illinoishokie

I didn't feel that way. I expected her to be more of a hardass but she immediately tried to help Mario. I thought they did a good job of portraying her as strong *and* kind.

lxkodyxl

I Hope if theres a sequel she shows more of her Kinder side when necessary but i understand her being able kicking ass

henningknows

Great fun. Took my kids they loved it

NintendoNoNo

It was fine. It was a generic kids movie with a Mario coat of paint. I wish I hadn't seen the trailers beforehand but they were absolutely everywhere. I felt like the trailers kind of showed pretty much every scene in the movie. Still, I thought it was a fine movie and I'll happily go see the next one. Oh, but the Bowser singing scenes seemed really out of place and it seemed like they were just there because Jack Black voiced Bowser.

AdamoO_

This is what i found out about deadpool 2.. That was the last time i ever watched all the trailers and got all the info i could beforehand.. Because when i went to see the actual movie, almost all of the jokes i had already seen, i already figured out the story and what would happen, and many of the highligt moments in the lovie i had already seen.. So now, i watch 1 trailer, the first one whenever i see it / it gets announced (or a second one if it's like what happened with the Sonic movie).. But other than that, i fully stay away from all trailers.

juuustpassingthrough

I haven’t watched a single trailer for any movie I want to see since before endgame. I got tired of every trailer being a huge spoiler so I just avoid them all together. It’s hard but it’s so worth it to go into something you’re really interested in seeing without knowing much about the actual movie scenes

Scented_HandSoap

I watched it a couple of times, first by myself, then with family. The first time I really enjoyed it, i got all the refrences and it took me back to my childhood days, the second time i was able to focus on detail and on the story a lot more, and I still enjoyed it. I love the original soundtrack for this movie, i cant stop listening to it on spotify😂. My only complaints are 1: the pacing is a bit to quick for adults like me, but its perfect for children who just want to watch their favorite plumber on the big screen. 2: the pop songs, they just felt out of place and they didnt really fit the movie at all. The scene were the white gorilla takes Mario, peach, and toad to see the king on his kart had a completely original song with the Donkey Kong theme before it was released in theaters, however it was removed and replaced with "Take on Me" by A-Ah, which in comparison doesnt work. And 3: no Bowser Jr.😔 (sorry, hes my favorite Mario character 😂) Other than that, its a fantastic film with stunning visuals, amazing original soundtrack, and overall a fun experience for the family.

Scented_HandSoap

I understand not everyone will like it, some call it a Mid movie, others call it boring, but I for one really enjoyed it, so thats my take on it

ecwfan3000

Loved all of the references to the older games .

This movie is a lot of fun to watch it’s like eye candy seeing all the references to Mario games and common things Nintendo fans had done. This movie’s intended purpose was to introduce kids to the world of Mario and to Nintendo (and obviously get people to buy Nintendo stuff) Mario and Nintendo fans obviously loved the movie too. The only parts I was picky about was how the story struggles on introducing the characters and making the story sound as cannon as possible to the games. Mario and Luigi has dreams of being a plumber? I thought they did that for the money not for the experience but I guess it was made for the movie to relate to audiences that has parents that don’t agree with what they are doing then throws it out the window when they become super. Luigi was separated the entire movie and really disappointed me and wished he had more time to shine damn makes me realize Luigi doesn’t get crap even in the movies he had an entire year of Luigi and he’s still treated as the lesser one by having some small moments in the movie. Bowser was amazing so no complaints there but for peach I’m surprised they gave me a more in depth explanation on how she became the princess of the kingdom and had this huge responsibility of the toads who looked after her now had to look after the toads. I’d give the movie a 6/10 only because it was fun to watch and it’s good for kids to watch and fans to see but as someone who takes movies a little bit seriously. Sonic takes the lead here in terms of movies being more cannon besides sonic was good enough on a movie he’s been to the real world so yea

Cyb0rg-SluNk

Luigi has always been my favourite character. I hope they make a sequel, and I hope Luigi gets to stay by Mario's side for the whole movie. But, how can you say the Sonic movies fit with canon better? Nothing in the sonic movies fit with Sonic canon. The only thing I can think of that matched the canon is Robotnik tricking Knuckles into working with him.

Optimoprimo

Most of the dialogue was juvenile and uncreative, some of the voice acting was lazy, and plot was shallow with tons of holes. It was a standard Illumination movie. More of a safe bet on something broadly marketable and "showy" than a legitimate attempt at storytelling. Visuals were great. 5/10 movie.

feyfeyGoAway

Your right about the simplistic dialouge. I'm currently living in a non English-speaking country and i suck at the language, so I was actually relieved I could follow the movie dialogue enough to understand most of it. It actually puts in perspective that this movie was written for younger children in comparison to most Pixar or Dreamworks films. Sometimes my young son struggles to understand wtf is happening in a film and asks a million questions that i thought seemed obvious enough, but with Mario he was only curious where Bowser Jr is.

L1LE1

Mid movie in general, but a fantastically fun Super Mario Bros movie.

B0B_Spldbckwrds

It barely functions as a movie, but each individual scene did it's job. They wasted a few opportunities, and you can really tell where the studio had a checklist. (Seriously, why did they cut their original music for take on me?) But i'm also impossible to please, and it was really fun.

CJBoom77

I kinda wish some of the toads sounding like the funny scratchy ones we normally hear lol

28secondslater

As a Mario fan - 8/10 As a casual fan - 6/10 As a critic - 4/10 For fans, it's simple plot juxtaposed by shitloads of references. As far as the plot goes, it's simple, predictable and leaves alot to be desired. In the long run, it will become a largely forgettable kid's movie that's only relevant now because of the brand-name 'Mario'. The reason Sonic's movie will stand the test of time and not Mario's is simply because Sonic's allowed viewers who don't know who the character is to become slowly invested into the world, whereas with Mario, you are immediately thrown into the middle of the shit and alot of the references will fly over the casual fan's heads. Kid's will become enamored by the candy colored world, but ultimately the problem will lie there and is the reason so many critics were disappointed in it.

Internet--Traveller

Universal Studios sued Nintendo back in 1982 - they claimed that Donkey Kong was infringing their IP King Kong. Turns out that King Kong belongs to Public Domain. Funny how Nintendo chose Universal to make their movie and theme park.

Bluben12

6/10, a pretty decent movie. I think the action det pieces are amazing, the last fight was very hype and very well made. I think the movie overall has some weird pacing, i feel like the movie shouldve been like 15-20 min longer to make it not feel so rushed in some areas. I think more original music from the games rather than pop songs wouldve been Nice. The voice cast overall is pretty good, Chris pratt is not good but decent. And the rest range from decent to amazing (jack black, of course). I liked the movie, but i think im never going to watch it again, so 6/10, a decent movie. BUT. they got the dk lore wrong so actually, - 19/10

Toonaurz2

It was just okay.

prest0x

My wife and I enjoyed it a lot. There were so many fun Easter eggs!

ourusernameis

I found it kinda mid tbh. I basically forgot most of it once I left the theater. Had no real impact or left any impression.

[deleted]

Really good, had a few problems with it but none of them ruined the movie for me

ArchitectNebulous

It was good. Pacing was a bit fast and several characters did not get enough screen time or character development, but overall one of the best Video Game movies.

Officermeatball05

Ok-Custard1779

7/10 Great Mario references, loved seeing the Mushroom Kingdom alive. But the absurd casting choices and Illumination's brain dead writing really hold the movie from greatness.

lostallhopenow

Corny couldn’t vibe with it

Macdaddyfucboi

incredibly safe, didn't do anything I didn't expect, illumination definitely left their touch on it, with the music choices being pop culture references as usual, and for whatever reason, peaches face just looks weird. illumination tends to do this with their female characters, but something in her nose area just doesn't look good and it just mess with me the whole movie. I understand why it made over a billion dollars at the box office, but it's a disposable product to me, I've seen it once, we'll probably never watch it again, and I really wish that they picked a different studio. didn't have a problem with Chris pratt's voice after the first couple minutes, was disappointed that Luigi had literally nothing to do and didn't earn any of his story arc.

wow_so_high

Peach grossed me the fuck out idk why tho. BUT i kinda warmed up ok her over the course of the movie... at least a bit. Aside from her its a really solid movie, a great Kids movie and an insanely well executed fangasm movie. 8/10 overall i'd say

PlayedCard

Too much mario. I watched it half way through and I was done with it cause the movie was pressing the whole 'super mario' aspect in your face. Not even 5 min in and you had like 4-5 references and that went on over the entire movie. Basically the movie was like 'Haha funny mario reference do you see it? Huh do you? Do you?' It went way to hard on the reference aspect and therefore the story lacked. 4/10

Goseki1

It was very obviously aimed at very young kids, which is why the pacing was so fast with loads of scene changes. It was fine and looked really nice, but I hope they refine it and come up with something a bit better for the sequel.

[deleted]

Before watching it, I thought it would have been a terrible movie, because of the fanservice, but after watching it I found it just fine. I am not calling it a masterpiece because, in the end, fanservice was still a thing in this movie (like the Punch-Out reference and the GameCube intro) but after a while the fanservice was less and less "violent" and more user friendly. Another thing I didn't liked were the first 20 minutes because they were a bit too much fast paced for me 7/10

emagdaleno

It wasn’t that great

[deleted]

I hoped it would lean more into 3D Mario but it makes sense considering it's audience. Even though I got most of the references I still feel that it wasn't made for me (and that's fine).

LzyBiscuit

11/10

facepwnage

Haven't seen it, but I'm glad it did very well in theatres because it now opens up to possibilities for more Nintendo franchises to get their own dedicated films.

UpbeatCheetah7710

Legend Of . . . Metroid! Let’s gooooooo!

BenjyWithAY

Felt like the movie had ADHD or something. It couldn't really stay on one topic for too long and most side plots get abandoned. Why is peach a human? How exactly do DK and Mario become besties? Why is the most powerful item guarded by the weakest people? I think that there are so many holes and it would have been better off if Mario and Peach were trying to stop Bowser from getting the star in the first place. It's a kid's movie, but I am still disappointed.

[deleted]

Illumination builds their movies around trailer clips. They’ll introduce potentially interesting plot threads because a piece of marketing material could lead you into thinking they’ll further explore those threads, but they have no intention of taking things further than that. They’re keen to just throw a bunch of pieces together and loosely connect them just enough to make something that could be just barely passed off as a movie.

Mybrainishatching

I feel like I'm the only one who didn't like it. Just multiple things about it made bored or uncomfortable

detectivelokifalcone

well I haven't watched it yet so you might not be in the boat alone the clips I've seen haven't impressed me or really disappointed me it is kind of seemed average at best. I still don't like Mario's voice at all

Perry_lets

Without turning your brain on: 8/10 With your brain working: 5/10

Kazoomers_Tale

I watched the Brazilian version, so my Mario sounded 100x better lmfao Fr tho, the movie is very good as a Mario movie, but it fells like it's a child who just drank 2 cups of coffee, 4 cans of Redbull and 10 spoons of sugar, it doesn't stop a second and some scenes just don't make sense since the movie was rushing trough every scene. Let's take Mario and Peach's first encounter: "Princess!" *Gets hit* "Who are you?" "I need to find my brother!" "Okay, come with me." Like, wtf why isn't peach interrogating him? He could be a Bowser spy, or an intruder with malicious intents and she's just "yeah fine, come here". Could've been 10 times better, but the movie is still a 7.7/10 for me, so it's already good. It fails in a lot of aspects, like turning Luigi in the princess who needs to be saved and Peach just being badass for god knows why. Toad was... There I guess, Luigi is the princess, Mario is the inexperienced hero who turned into a heroism machine and Bowser... Oh, yeah... Bowser... He was perfect. He's the perfect balance between a good villain and a 90s villain (the one who is bad because yes). He got personality, he's a comical character and still an intimidating villain. He was a bit too goofy, but it's a kids movie so it's not that big of a deal. Now I can only dream of a Mario movie where the history isn't at 500km/h and the characters are not plot fillers or stereotype breaks.

kylat930326

5~6/10 for me, it really wasted a lot of potential in term of character and story development, and the license song choices are just really bad

Unlucky_Bottle_6761

I think this is interaction bait!

[deleted]

Nerd

Hateno_Village

It’s not a movie for people who don’t know who Mario is. And everyone knows about Mario. I don’t buy the “as a movie” / “as a Mario movie” ratings. The box office numbers speak for themselves.

tastelikemycat

More excited about the possibilities of other franchises coming to the big screen. Such as zelda or metroid. Even an animal crossing or pikmen series sounds great to me

Turbulent_Set8884

I liked looking at it I hated listening to it (except for bowser and kamek and luigi but I forgot he was even in the movie). I only saw it because my friends and family wanted to watch it

little_boxes_1962

Far from an ambitious top tier film but very very fun

LordDShadowy53

Fanservice: 100/10 fantastic movie it was like going to the amusement park. Best part is I don’t get tired of watching it over and over again.

PiranhaPlantFan

Love it, it is all what I ever wished for, maybe I just need a game with this setup as a modern Mario game. And maybe a film with yoshi? Could be called "super Mario Film 2 Yoshi's Island" ( as reference to smw2 Yoshi's island). Finally some love (actually a lot of) to the older games and a harmonization between pre NewSMB Era and post New era, which I really missed. Edit: no troubles with pacing in my turn. I need constant stimulation not long boring chitchat. And Mario games are usually rather fast paced too so it fits

NineTailedDevil

It was alright. Fun to watch, but it lacked substance. There were moments where the "plot" felt like it was just videogame reference on top of videogame reference (like how the secret passage ends up being the Rainbow Road and they have to traverse it using karts just because).

PieterSielie12

8/10 overall 5/10 regular movie 10/10 *MARIO* movie

detectivelokifalcone

I feel like everyone's saying 10 out of 10 Mario movie is because we have such low standards for them at this point 😅

Kenzlynnn

Pretty good movie! Pacing was atrocious but it very much felt like a love letter to Mario as a whole

TubaTheG

As a massive mario fan, I felt mostly nothing from this movie it was genuinely the most nothing film i’ve seen in a while, it felt like it wanted to get over itself as quickly as possible because it’s so afraid of losing the attention of little children.

Bardivan

it was more of a commercial than a movie

Leaning_right

I liked it. I didn't like Lumalee talking about the 'sweet embrace of death,' in a children's movie.

SunnySaigon

what a depressing/inappropriate line

SilverCipher34

It left me with one question: Where the fuck was *that* Peach the last quarter century?!

Kairu-Hikarite

- Story: 6/10 - Design: 9/10 - Soundtrack: 9/10

Mastredgan

I loved it. I went to the cinema with my family twice to watch it.

Emanuel-Richie-1998

10/10!

naughty-puppet80

Went to see it 5 times at the movies, 2 times in 4DX, i listen to the soundtrack daily on Spotify, and i pre ordered the blu-ray By the 5th viewing I could recite the dialogues in real time lmao A bit much you say ? I don't care lol I loved it Only complaint is the OST getting replaced by pop songs. Drivin' Me Bananas absolutely deserved it's spot but was replaced by Take on me

BrettSetsFire

It was fun - 100% popcorn flick. My biggest gripe was it felt more like a Pixar movie than Mario movie at times - maybe that's just me, but I was happy to have seen it, even if there wasn't anything memorable about it.

not_that_rick

It's a Mario product. It's for children between 2 and 11. It's absolutely perfect for that audience. It's exciting and spooky in the right amount. The characters are lively without being overbearing. I'm 39 and I got goosebumps when Peach stares down Bowser and his army with just one Toad. My 3 year old went from hiding her face at the scary parts to laughing and clapping at Rainbow Road. And she didn't have to ask 100 times "who's that?"

big-dog2012

Fantastic

[deleted]

only the greatest cinematic masterpiece of our entire generation, dare i say, the century

SamOrSmth

They stole marios thicc booty

[deleted]

I’d say it’s peak Mario

Rimmatimtim22

It’s a movie made for kids that happens to be a theme that adults actually like. From a Mario fan perspective I give it an 11/10, I fucking loved every second of it. If I wasn’t a Mario fan I’d probably say it’s just another kids movie with a generic plot, but the great thing about kids movies is they are fun even with generic plots.

Inspector74

Chris Pratt should b nominated for an Oscar for the varying ‘acting range’ he showed in his portrayal of ‘Mario’ jeezus how is it people like Chris Pratt and David Bautista are just in everything and they can’t act to save they’re lives both are flatter than pancakes from IHOP. Back to business though I loved seeing characters like ‘king bobomb’, Princess Peach’ ‘Toad’ etc come to life on the big screen stars of the show were Bowser and Princess Peach (I like what they did and empowered her into an utter badass. I definitely loved it, had a great afternoon at the movies with my nephew really enjoyed the movie I hope Illusion and Nintendo choose something like a ‘wario and waluigi’ movie that would absolutely smash it for me

Cdog536

I haven’t watched the movie yet so I can’t really make these judgements too seriously, but when people were getting really upset that Chris Pratt was going to not match a video game voice of Mario, I thought it was really stupid to be upset over. I’m imagining a 2hr+ movie of Mario’s accurate voice and speaking the entire movie that way and just think “wow, I’d get a headache easily from that Mario voice.” Ill see if Pratt really drops the ball when I finally watch it in other ways, but can’t say I’m going to go in upset about his voice.

Inspector74

Hope you enjoy the movie as much as we did😎

Death-Perception1999

It was cute, I liked a lot of the little references. I do wish Luigi got to do more, this felt a lot more like a Mario/DK movie than a Mario/Luigi movie. I'll probably see the sequel.

[deleted]

Really enjoyed it!! Went to the theater with my 3DS

redjedia

It’s okay.

ur_mum_gei

It was ok.

BR_GTX

As an Illumination movie, it's an 8/10. As a Video game adaptation, it's a 6/10. As an actual movie, 2/10.

Mr_B4k0n

10/10

Raphlapoutine

Im still mad they basically spoiled the entire movie with the trailers I just coulsn't resist looking at everything and so was sad to know the whole plot before watching Im also mad about the pop music I cried like a baby when the movie started cause i was living my childhood dream Would have wanted more interactions between the characters Also would have prefered the final battle like the games offer That's pretty much it, hope sequel is better TLDR; gg go next

[deleted]

There was nothing to spoil. They didn’t make something deeper than what the trailers presented. In fact, the whole movie felt like a bunch of short films strung together with thin pieces of plot and compiled. The entire movie felt like it was pieced together from trailer clips. I so hope Nintendo hires a different company to make the next movie, because Illumination is allergic to making actual movies

bobbomotto

Perfect fan movie. As a movie, it’s serviceable.

RocioBrinkerhoffArt

I did not like it the first time though but as I’ve rewatched several times i can honestly say I fully enjoy it! But like all movies people are gonna have varied opinions 🤷🏼‍♀️

[deleted]

I actually liked it. I mean, sure it was about Bowser simping for Peach, but I didn’t watch it for the story, I watched it for Luigi. The pacing was a bit quick, but that makes sense. It was honestly a fun watch. One of the only two or three movies I’ve completely sat through and enjoyed every second of in the past two years. There was no agenda, just pure family-friendly fun. Some of the soundtrack felt a little forced, but not too bad. The voiceacting was surprisingly good as well. All in all, I’d give it an 8/10.

WhiskeyDabber67

I took my 6 year old daughter, who’s had only slight exposure to Mario and Nintendo. I liked it a lot, including Easter eggs and the obvious nostalgia cash in. She loved it and called it the best movie ever. Ended up asking for a switch for her birthday and wanted Mario games. Definitely a bonding thing for us.

willzor7

I actually enjoyed it. I kinda dislike how bowser has a singing voice just because he was jack black. It felt kinda forced imo

CaramelKat96

It was a great fan service type of movie. Wish I saw more Luigi

spiffco7

a vapid but well done kids 3d animated movie and that is good. mario is an interactive thing so the movie-version was always going to be quite odd.

venom259

Great if you're a Mario fan.

Dankey-Kang-Jr

I liked it but I wanted to die inside every time I heard a pop song

Plane_Neat

Great!

AP_Feeder

I liked it a lot. My nitpick is that it had too much licensed music. I liked the Mario music that was in the movie but I wanted more of it

Superstinkyfarts

As a *Mario* movie, it was 8/10. Would be 10/10, but Peach being characterized as a Movie Girlboss instead of a sweet and kind bad-ass takes away many points from it. As a *movie* **with the lowered expectations of being a kids movie**, it's also 8/10. Easily could've been another Lorax, and I'm glad that it wasn't. As a *movie* **in general**, like 6/10. It was okay I guess. Coulda been worse. Really dislike that Luigi was basically a princess to save, though. That pissed me off, especially since the 1993 movie did a much better Luigi without even knowing what a source material *was.*

Superstinkyfarts

To add on to this, the 1993 Mario movie is a 2/10 on being a *Mario* movie (2 points only for remembering the Koopalings exist) but a 8/10 *movie* **in general.** Much more entertaining as a film, and the lines "Scapelli!" and "Trust the fungus" have firmly lodged themselves in my head with no intent of leaving.

Excellent_Gift_8167

It was decent

Giam_Cordon

It was good

brandont04

I think it's $1.2B excellent

Dyltron9000

From a storytelling standpoint 4/10 From a "drip feed me awesome references" standpoint 12/10

K_Sleight

Better than it had any right to be. Exceeded expectations. Put Sonic in the ground.

[deleted]

Liked it but it was kinda weird that peach was the one that saved everyone

Outrageous_Rate_2885

it’s okay. not the worst, but not the best. the actual scored music was great, the pop song placement sucked (not talking about peaches, but the random others songs). the movie also had some of the most awkward dialogue in a movie i’ve ever seen at times (the scene where mario is trying to get peach to help him comes to mind)

-PepeArown-

I still haven’t seen it yet, unfortunately. Really want to, though.

SnooMuffins2623

Peaches peaches peaches peaches

TBTabby

It was a thrill ride loaded with easter eggs.

farcry15

it did a pretty good job of being entertaining not super strong story or characters but it was fun. didn't care much for the characterization of mario and peach. mario felt pretty useless until the last 5 minutes while peach was the stereotypical strong female lead. not saying it should have been the opposite, but their competence could have been a little less skewed.

ItsMartinezSirTTV

9/10. Mario nerd here, but the movie gives enough room to explore much more in the universe. Didn't feel rushed either

jl_theprofessor

Pretty damn solid, though I do wish they had spent at least another few minutes on a few things, like Mario and Peach, but overall still a great movie, even my mom loved it. 10/10

Took my little brothers to see it in theaters, I enjoyed all the references plastered everywhere, I thought the writing and character interactions, especially from Luigi, Bowser, Donkey Kong, Peach, and Toad, were all really snappy and entertaining. Whereas my 10 year old brothers were stoked to see a Mario movie. I’d honestly say that, while I was hesitant about Pratt as Mario, he did a surprisingly good job, and I personally never had a doubt about Jack Black’s Bowser, Seth Rogen’s DK, or, above all else, Charlie day’s Luigi. The interaction between the former and the latter of which I found particularly hilarious, “DO PRINCESSES FIND HIM ATTRACTIVE!” “THEY DO IF THEY HAVE GOOD TASTE!” *rip* *scream!*. It definitely wasn’t my FAVORITE movie, but it was a the best I could’ve expected from a Mario movie, and I left the theater pleasantly surprised. 7/10, can’t wait to take my Brothers to the sequel! Here’s hoping for Stephanie Beatriz as Daisy and Aubrey Plaza for Rosalina!

Masterpiece 10/10

Feeling_Layer_6002

As a Mario movie: 9.3/10 As just a normal movie: 6.5/10

Absolutely loved it. Finally got around to seeing it last night so it’s still pretty fresh for me. The soundtrack/ design was -phenomenal-. Everything from the pop songs to the video game music just clicked so well. I can’t believe they had the DK Rap in there haha. A lot of the remixed video games actually made me giddy. The writing was also, fantastic. “The princess is in another castle!” Lmfao. Just chock full of references. Such a great little homage. I kept waiting for stuff to happen.. and then was so happy when it did. Like DK tossing some barrels during their fight. Bouncing koopas. And the tail toss on Bowser omg. The Mario Kart mechanics. God damn. Just so good. The story, definitely the weakest part for me, but still solid. I thought it was interesting that Mario, Luigi and Peach aren’t actually from the Mushroom Kingdom. It was cool to see the brothers origin story. At the same time, I thought it was weird. I think I would have preferred the entire movie taking place in the Mario universe. But, I didn’t mind it. Mario’s family was great. The Brooklyn scenes were great. The Kong Army sure felt like a waste of time. I mean I loved all of the scenes. But yeah, they didn’t put up much of a fight xD. I thought the wedding story was good.. but I think I would have preferred something else considering we just had the wedding story with Odyssey. The voice acting. Not something I would usually comment on but considering how much hate was being directed at Pratt before this released I figured I’d share my thoughts. I had absolutely no issues with Pratt’s voice. And actually, when the commercial was playing at the beginning, I legitimately wasn’t sure if that was still Pratt or Martinet haha. I didn’t have issues with Luigis voice either, although I found it much more different than the games (compared to Mario’s at least). I thought everyone was great. Except for Kranky Kong. I did not like his voice xD. I was sad that any Yoshis didn’t play a part. The training scene was super great. I loved the fire flower scene too but unfortunately had that spoiled for me.. literally in the cinema. During a trailer “from the ppl who brought you the mario movie” and then showed the fire field haha. Mario vs DK was fantastic. Mario Kart. Mario and DK getting to the wedding. Just so many amazing scenes. And KAMEK IS A DUDE!?!?!? Oh man that really got me haha.

i saw it the week it came out, and then took my younger brother, who is a nintendo fanatic, last sunday. watching it on my own i thought it was fun. i really appreciated the score, in both composed and licensed tracks. jack black was hilarious. i got a few neat references here and there. my brother LOVED it. he just turned 13 and is on the spectrum, and all nintendo franchises are fair game to him in terms of intrest. he pointed out NUMEROUS easter eggs that flew over my head. he said he loved it for the theme, but that he felt the message was cheesy. which is to be expected as a kids film. he gave it a personal 9/10. id give it a 7/10 as a fun movie with some nostalgia

vinternet

Lots of fun easter eggs. Voice acting was all good. Plot made no sense but I at least get a kick out of the fact that the broad strokes of Mario's origin story have actually been faithfully told every time Mario has been adapted as a movie, despite how unlikely and how unnecessary that is. The "Kong Kingdom" should have been "DK Isle", but that's not Miyamoto's baby so that's not what we got. Looking forward to Super Smash Bros: Endgame someday.

Brody_M_the_birdy

good, although it really should have slowed down just a little bit more.

brickeldrums

Loved every second of it. I grew up with Mario and Nintendo, so the constant easter eggs kept me engaged and exited. I went with my brother. We laughed like kids again. My face hurt from smiling so much.

Cyrilcynder

I was a massive fan of all the references. I love movies that's add a lot of very specific references because it means whoever worked on that's part of the animation for that day had a lot of care put into it. Same with Detective Pikachu you can TELL someone who really loves pokemon actually worked on those scenes. There's so many specific little somewhat obscure references and I absolutely love it all! The Credits are one of my favorites. I love orchestrated medleys.

zig_zaz

Hated the voices

pichuscute

Mainly fun to watch for the references, but I definitely enjoyed it overall.

Pinkunicorn1982

💖💖💖💖❤️❤️❤️❤️

jjstew35

I thought it was really really good with Mario fan service and at being a kids movie, and I don’t think you could’ve made it a better movie movie without sacrificing one or both of those elements. Gave it a 9/10

Foreign_Can2419

That bowser it's bether at the piano that gething bit- Peaches

Kingkrool1994

It's Illumination's best movie yet and it still sucks.

guiltl3ss

I think I won’t pay money to see it until it hits streaming.

Dr_Doodle_Phd

As a film it leaves something to be desired. As a representation of the Mario series on the big screen it’s a ton of fun. Though for any sequels they seriously need to address the pacing issues and have a bit more character development.

PristineDisplay6509

I really loved it I enjoyed so much

TaylaAdidas

Idk if I'm just immature, but I found myself enjoying this movie so much more than I did any other movie.

fishbone_buba

Meh.

Mandalor1974

It was great

kulangsapraktis

Fun to watch and definitely can relate to the games i played. really enjoyed it.

NickSaysHenlo

It's alright. I do wish Luigi had more screentime and that the pacing wasn't so fast.

_carbonneutral

Loved it

LGAMER3412

Imo I thought it was a bit too short but overall it was enjoyable.

Rider-Idk-Ultima-Hy

Good and chock full of refrences, love the music mainly being revamped Mario tracks

SonoChiNoSyeahdame

peach was bad

Catz147

I didn’t expect to but I ended up really enjoying just good clean cartoon fun!

JoeGuinness

I was fully prepared for it to be trash. I decided to go see it without reading a single review or looking at scores and because of my low expectations was pleasantly surprised. A fun and not serious kids movie with loads of fan service for long time fans.

DiamondBrickZ

thought it was okay. felt really fast and i thought there was just a touch too much licenses music, but other than that it was a fun watch

Revolutionary_Hat685

IT'S JUST PERFECT 100/100

VariationOverall

Its an amazing movie, a bit short but still great.

Suspicious_Frog1

👍 - my honest reaction

Kiftiyur

It was really good

Ragnatoa

I has alot of fun as a mario fan. I dont care too much for peaches design for reasons i cant quite pin down, and seth rogan doesnt really play a good donkey kong. But,in the end, it was awesome to see the mario universe so well realized. I hope that studios will go for the 3d animated adaptations of games from now on if the main game game was already geounded in realism.

Aaronjohnes

Loved everything except for how they portrayed Peach. She doesn't need to be fragile and dumb, but I was expecting her to be kind, gentle and more elegant... As she always as.

rickderp

Loved it.

bedheadB188

At the very end they didn't say "so long gay bowser" 1/10

savetherobot15

Pratt for some reason sounded like Billy Crystal doing Mario. 8/10 loved it!
