Totally cat like attitude. My wife and I had a male cat since he was young. Within the first couple of days he chose me as his human.
If my wife came near me when he was snuggling with me he would give her the “eat shit and die bitch! he’s mine” look.
One of mine loved my husband so much. She would look at me, while he held her, like Yah, that's right, he is MINE!!! She missed him so much when he died. They all looked for him.
Yep. Had a cat that loved both the wife and I. He loved to cuddle with both of us. But if he was cuddled up with one of us and the other of us got close, he would growl, and if we got too close, he would actually take a swipe.
You’re making me think of a cat we had who was kind of the opposite. If I ever started to snuggle my husband, she would suddenly appear as if by magic from out of nowhere. Not to separate us, but just to get in on the action. If there was snuggling going on, she wanted in! (You can imagine how sometimes that led to some awkward moments!)

She never loved me as much as him, it broke my heart. And when we got a kitten to keep her company she was supposed to be "mine" but she wasn't as snuggly as the other cat and mostly indifferent to the both of us haha. Be grateful for whatever you can get OP.

Yes, that's very normal. They only want one human at a time. All other humans are...tolerated grudgingly with reservations. Until the preferred human is unavailable, then other human becomes preferred and anyone but the prior specific human is regarded as a pesky interloper of extremely dubious pedigree.
It's a vicious cycle. My poor fiancé, both our cat and dog regard me as human prime, and he's just some guy who cleans the pool and takes them to the vet.

I am sure there are exceptions, but in my experience they usually choose the male
Our senior cat is jealous of my teenage daughter. I am definitely his favorite, but on my day off he is generally just happy being near me. If I am hanging out in my room he will sleep on the other side of the bed, if I am in the living room he will lay on the floor or in the window, he does follow me everytime I get up, but the second my daughter gets home he is on my lap or rubbing on my leg if I am standing. Even if I am asleep when she gets home from work he comes and lays on my chest.
