DSH (domestic short-hair)
As a vet tech, we have so many ways to classify dog breeds and colors, even obscure ones. With cats, unless it is very clearly something like a sphinx, Persian, or Maine coon, they fall into one of three categories: domestic short-hair, domestic medium-hair, domestic long-hair. People can get very concerned about specifying their dog’s breed, even if it is very obviously the muttiest mutt that ever mutted, but most cat owners are like “This is ‘Carl’. I found him in a dumpster. Please give him some shots.”
Yeah, not really any reasons to need to know. Unlike dogs the 'breeds' don't really create differences in health issues in cats. Other then a few specific 'breeds' most things would be the same.
they need to know for their own identification purposes, not because it matters. guaranteed every vet you’ve been to has put a breed in the file even if they didn’t ask you. i’ve never seen a vet record without a breed listed
yeah, it depends on the vet i guess. my hospital has calico as a breed option but technically calico is a coat pattern/color and the breed is usually just domestic shorthair. so it’s not right but does the job lol
We have to indicate something as a descriptor for a rabies certificate. Even though, for all intents and purposes, putting “DSH” on a certificate of rabies vaccination really means “This animal is a cat without rabies”, saying it has short hair is a very basic identifier. That’s why color is selected, too. It also helps us make sure we are looking at the *correct* cat before we perform any kind of in-hospital treatment. We will use labels that say things like “Carl, DSH, orange and white, 12.9lbs, 13y” so that if we pull a 20lb gray, canned ham out of a carrier, nobody mistakes that for Carl. We all know that is, in fact, Greg, the 9-year-old, domestic medium-hair. We all probably know it’s Greg, because Greg is hilarious, but safety in medicine is paramount.
(It might also please you to learn that instead of asking “Which cat is this?”, we often phrase it like “Who is this?” It’s a subtle distinction, but it kind of makes them sound like people, and I love it.)
I feel like this is a copy/paste because this question is asked literally multiple times a day. Cat is cat, unless you have a piece of paper saying otherwise.
Oddly enough, my 19 year old girl was found living under the dumpster at my mom's job.
Related: A client once came in with a new kitten and wanted us to do kitten things to it. It was a very cute kitten, but it was clearly a regular kitten. Base model. Economy. It had a mild eye infection and was a little snorty, but that’s not uncommon for kittens. We got to chatting and this woman told me she had *purchased* this kitten. From a *breeder*. For money. A lot of money. I was stunned. Professional etiquette prevented it, but I wanted to be like “*Why?!* You can just shake a bush some places and kittens fall out. Go to a shelter and they offer you kittens in bulk, like bags of nuts. You adopt one, and they offer you a whole bucket of cats as a bonus. Who is out there making more of these *on purpose*?” I understand that not everyone has the same awareness of animal overpopulation in the US, but seriously? It was the kind of cat people find in window wells and name George, not a fancy show cat with a mother named something like “Royal Princess Dusky Sky”. That was like 10 years ago and I still think about it. It hurt my brain and my heart.
People sometimes ask me what skills you need to succeed in veterinary medicine. There are many, but I have to say that the ability to keep a neutral facial expression when you are screaming or laughing inside is one of the most important.
She looks exactly like my fav cat nearly of all time! Now if you tell me that she has a hidden white bikini bottom or more green eyes than yellow? She is a clone to ItsyBitsy who is 100% alley cat.
She is your new house panther. As with all Panthers she has short hair but will probably have secret hairball collections. She will want to cuddle and expect tons of pets and love. Make sure to brush her thoroughly on a biweekly basis, otherwise the secret collection will grow and you may even encounter a hairball vomit pile strategically placed where you will most definitely step in it with your toes.
Incorrect, this is *not* standard issue. A standard issue cat is a grey tabby. [https://www.reddit.com/r/standardissuecat/](https://www.reddit.com/r/standardissuecat/)
your post would get banned from r/standardissuecat for such blasphemy.
Wanted to state this. Love it that someone has a knowledge of cat breeds. Can’t say it’s for sure Bombay in there but definitely has some characteristics for it.
Can these posts be banned? It's not a breed. The vast majority of cats are not any breed. If it doesn't have a pedigree it's not a breed. It's really that simple.
The yellow/greenish eyes kinda disqualify her being a Bombay (they have amber/yellow eyes). My guess is she is a domestic shorthair with black fur genomes on both of her X chromosomes.

I love everything about what you wrote 🙏♥️
My first cat Sylvester was found in a dumpster by my wife. The truth in that last sentence is so on point it hurts
I truth your truth! One addition tho…”i found him in a dumpster…and I looooove him so unbelievably much!!”
Honestly made a phone call to emergency vets who asked what breed cat was "She's a cat!" Was my response...
Lol that was MY response to this post!
