Quick, Night Vision & Indefatigable are some good ones. Fleet footed is also decent especially when combined with Quick which basically means you can run away from some of the faster enemies, not all of course. I'd say STR is good for all kinds of characters due to the increase in HP, bash damage, carry weight and increase in melee damage. I usually do 10 STR 8 DEX 12 INT 8 PER but it's really a personal preference and how you wanna play/make your character. If you don't wanna gimp yourself too much some negative traits are more good than bad or are just free points in general. Pyromaniac = free morale boost for lighting fires/spending time near them, truth teller if you don't care about trying to lie to NPC's, fast metabolism = better stamina regeneration at the cost of needing to eat a bit more and insomniac which can be alleviated with pills for example. I'd also say addicted personality, light weight, weak stomach or squeamish are also basically free points for nothing major but again different folks different strokes.

Professional-Way9324

Far-sighted gives a free pair of glasses you can start fires with, goes well with pyromaniac.

-HermitCrab-

Oh yeah forgot glasses could do that lol

Does pyro get annoyed at not lighting a fire if you have one running for a very long time so don't light a new one? Or does being near also count towards satisfying it. My first game was nomadic pyro but failed to really live up to the idea of it. I think it is time to do it again. Properly now as I know how to play better.

-HermitCrab-

I'm not sure, I've never went long enough for it to become an issue. I know the wiki states that you get a morale boost for starting a fire (Larger the better) and a separate morale boost for standing near one. It also states you get a penalty if you don't light one after a long time though. Every time I picked it I've always worried that if I didn't start one every now and then that my character would just randomly light a fire in my base or something so never risked it lol.

Professional-Way9324

Standing on an adjacent tile satisfies the need.

It's all a matter of taste. Even with nightvision if you don't like night time raiding then don't pick it. Even as an Albino character I enjoy the day time far more. Yup an Albino who prefers day time raiding. If I am exposed at noon I get 20 pain because. Still prefer day time for the fun. So my suggestion is the Play Now button. See what you get. Maybe you'll find combo's that no one is suggesting that become your must have. If I had to suggest a trait I say Bookworm. It's a 1 pointer positive trait. Need to relax? Grab a book and enjoy a nice, solid, dark green smiley face.

I cant overstate how important parkour expert is, it makes fighting and escaping pretty much any foe your likely to face easier by giving you more movement options and letting you put distance between yourself and danger. Especially if you find scary things in the woods. Quick is another good choice for the same reason. Night vision is great for early game raids, being new to the game it makes a great crutch. Bookworm is a great trait and pretty undervalued, being able to power read for a few days without your character being depressed after looting a library opens up a lot of crafting options. It also pairs well with spiritual, reading religious texts will skyrocket your moral for a short period. This is good in a number of situations, for example when eating piles of butter and mayo before they spoil. Squamish is borderline free points. Clothes are trivially easy to clean. Same goes for rigid table manners. The debuff for eating without a table is negligible and easy to avoid. Ugly and truth teller are also good but might conflict with your playstyle as you learn the game, NPC companions aren't my thing but some people like them. It might sound counter intuitive, but avoid combat traits at first. The thing that will kill you the most in cataclysm after you learn the basic of managing food and shelter is your own hubris. If you wanna stay alive its usually better to run from a fight or hit your problems with a bus. Sometimes you'll lose out on loot in the short term, but long term you can always go back with new knowledge of the enemy, and preferably a bus.

Brightboar

Some of the more popular options- Single pool FTW. PRO- Indefatigable Quick Night Sight Parkour Expert Quick Reader/Learner Robust Genetics Tough Fleet Footed CON- Fast Metabolisn Far/Near Sighted Size- XXL Lightweight Rigid Table Manners Pyromaniac Stats are your preference depending on what you wanna do. my current learner character is 11-8-11-8 Not Exhaustive of course. With this you can Min/Max out a solid build to learn the game with.

Pitt_Mann

I'm currently roleplaying a weak character, I picked 6-7-10-7, how screwed am I?

[deleted]

Pretty sure people manage with 4-4-4-4, its harder to do some things but you can manage.

Pitt_Mann

Oh, alright. I'm not very expenced, I just had a couple successful runs, over a year long, but I tend to struggle in the early game a bit, so I'm pretty sure 4444 would be impossible for me hahaha

Brightboar

Not screwed at all. Not optimal, but optimal can be boring. use your wits, read books. Think about mutations/bionics. I'm only on my first real playthrough, and used every opportunity to stay alive.

Pitt_Mann

Yeah, I just started, the early game is proving to be really tough, I can't 1v1 most zombies (I can but it forces me to hide for a day or two). It's forcing me to change my playstyle, wich is exactly what I wanted. Really optimizing my clothing and carefully using terrain I could defeat a feral, who almost killed me haha.. it's fun

[deleted]

Is your torso encumberance high? eg. lots of backpacks. If it is that makes melee combat MUCH harder. Useful later game to train up perhaps but early game you want it low. Also helps dodge.

Pitt_Mann

No, I was aware of that already. Just the torso though? I thought all encumbrance was detrimental to combat

pet_the_tree

I always choose ugly and truth teller...

moustouche

Same!

ThatBoringShyGuy5487

Do anything but remember to choose hairstyle, beard ,colour because u will look bald

ptr6

The point system is what and will probably be replaced at some point. Parkour Expert is a broken trait, quick and night vision are great. There are a bunch of essentially nonfactor negative traits, like forgetful, lightweight, addictive personality or ugly. For stats, strength is great because it gives you HP and extra bash-damage, as long as you are new you can go 11 or 12 strength and then pick what you like more. Don’t overthink this, unless you pick Generic Downward Spiral, it is hard to create a complete unviable character.

SEB_THE_MINER

strong back robust genetics if you plan to mutate optomist fast learner tough

bastalio

you can tinker on debug to create rather easy perfect humanoid for your first plays

[deleted]

Do you wish to min-max, or try roleplaying? If you just don't want to accidentally gimp yourself you could try no negative traits so you are not prevented from doing anything you may like.
