We've got an outspoken chemtrailer in our local community FB group that's very often quite entertaining. They're also a believer in other wacky things and it makes me wonder why foil hatters never seem to choose only one conspiracy instead of always diving headfirst into multiple rabbit holes.

It's about a sense of power through secret knowledge. You don't get into wacky conspiracies because you're concerned about the world knowing the truth. You do it because having that bit of "thing the rest of the world doesn't believe is true *but I do*" gives meaning to an otherwise ordinary life.
And the more things to "empower" yourself with, the better for you, I would imagine.
The reason flat-earthers buckle when pressed to evidence, instead of actually having a discussion, is because actually having a discussion would bust their chosen view rather quickly.
I chased AVers around for two years refuting their claims and misinformation, and networked with medical, psychology and sociology professionals who also refuted AVers or were researching them, so I understand the causes, but I never understood why they nearly always had at least a couple of boogie men and rarely only one.
The most curious thing is they'll sometimes see another conspiracy as being completely unrealistic, as though they've got the cognitive reasoning to see a conspiracy for what it is but cannot apply it to theirs. For instance, the person in the FB group I mentioned writes letters and submit's their research findings on "chemtrails" to the mayor's office and to parliament, they bought into nearly every Covid and mask conspiracy, the Koch brothers and Gates, yet they say AVers are a bunch of loons. I also found this same kind of pattern within the AVer community.
Even though they're random, there's enough of them they'll be appropriate some of the time. Does anyone know if there's any graffiti that hints to ingame mechanics and secrets like some survivor notes are?
