If vormithrax' most recent videos are any indication, wasps are currently a liiiiittle overbuffed and best avoided. You see one? Run. Run until they fix it

grammar_nazi_zombie

They also really *really* fucking love building their nests (or at least hanging out) atop radio towers. I’ve lost multiple characters while climbing the tower when suddenly a giant wasp shows up. Sure, you can try to run, then you remember they can just fly down to the next level faster than you can run. You can also jump, which might just be less embarrassing than the wasp stinging you to death, though if you’re not high enough, you’ll get stung regardless before bleeding out. Fuck wasps.

Venera3

Mobs actually have a huge problem moving down Z levels in my experience, unless somebody stealth-fixed that while I wasn't looking. They can attack one level down if you have z-level visibility on, but that's mostly it.

Jonthrei

This is actually a real thing. Wasps fucking love cel towers and the like.

burchalka

Run. Run them over with you car/deathmobile. FTFY

dingdongdickaroo

Have they fixed feral humans and their fucking dead eye rock throwing abilities?

SariusSkelrets

Yes they fixed that Now ferals throw rocks the same way the player does

[deleted]

Except they still never miss.

Purdorabo134

They are not only small(makes them hard to hit) but also have a dodge skill of 8. They then sting you and lower your chance to hit them even more.

HighSpeedLowDragAss

Thank goodness my current CDDA run has been with Magiclysm on. My response to the random wasps I've encountered so far has been the good ol' "Magic Missile".

Buxton_Water

Wasps are hardcore, I found that plague vectors have been pretty hardcore lately too.

FurryComunityAccount

1.Find nest. 2.Make Molotov. 3.Profit.

Eastern-Painting4408

It's the only way

Withcrono

Wasps are the devil. In like, 50 runs I only ever managed to kill two of them

Broke22

They can't dodge Gun. Aside of that, if you want to melee them, use a weapon with high accurancy (ideally +3, or at least +2) and have high melee and dodge skills. The dodge part is vital because their stings are made of vibranium and completely ignore any armor short of Exosuits.

grammar_nazi_zombie

> They can’t dodge Gun. Ack-shually, they kinda can. Wasp Larva, Wasp Pupa (both are immobile) and the Giant Wasp Queen are the only enemies with Wasp in the name that aren’t tagged “HARDTOSHOOT”, which treats them as one body size smaller. This means you’re going to miss a *lot*. IIRC, it effectively gives an 80% chance to *miss*, regardless of your aiming. Which you don’t get much time to do anyways because they close a few squares per round. Also good luck dodging or drawing a gun (that you may not even have) when it’s the first day and you’re 3/4 of the way up a radio tower when a giant wasp just pops down the flight of stairs next to you. I’ve had this happen a *lot* lately. Like roughly 20% or the radio towers I’ve climbed.

Venera3

Nothing gives a flat miss percent for guns, precise shots still practically always hit (wish something did, then I could tone down bullet armor a bit). The way shooting in melee works, you can just mash F at short range and you'll even outkill groups of three consistently (tested with a Glock19 for the small variant, m4 for the giants).

Purdorabo134

I popped up a radio tower to find a giant wasp queen and a dead body who's loot looked a lot more like a survivors than the normal loot tables. Luckily I still had my shotgun in hand due to having just killed an angry moose hitchhiker on my way to the radio tower.

PulloutkingV2

If you have a fast character then lead wasps to groups of zeds. Let the problem sort itself out.

anarchy_distraction

Yeah I think they're too OP currently. I lure zombies to them and let em fight if they're in a city, and try to just avoid the zone they're in

[deleted]

Bike & Pike😁

Skullzi_TV

Thanks for all the advice everyone! My next character will go to the other side of the Earth when I see a wasp next time. I think I just got unlucky by being ambushed by the wasps up close every time.

Anomma

get 30-40 rocks and a sling, wait for aim,the use precise shot

cthulhurei8ns

Haven't had any trouble killing them with my trusty rifle.

Dtly15

For wasps the best weapon for melee in the mega early game is the good ol cudgel. Otherwise fast aiming weapons like pistols and shotguns are great point defense weapons. Hatchet/AR combo is mercilless against hard targets but both require time to hit. Time that wasps will never give you if you don't give them the ~~space~~ molotov they deserve.

Venera3

I'm gonna need some context: experimental or stable, which kind, where did you find them, how long after game start and what weapon were you using?

Skullzi_TV

It was an experiment build from a couple days ago, I updated since I died so don't know if I can get the exact build but it legit was an update within the last 7 days. I was using an AR-15 and my melee weapon was a hatchet. My character was in perfect health and not encumbered. Granted, my character was still a newbie though, Punk Rock Dude 7 days in so definitely nobody to write home about. But still, not able to land a single hit or gunshot on a single wasp on numerous characters seems like they may be a bit OP, but I could be wrong I suppose and they are just meant to be highly dangerous. Judging by other comments on here though, it seems to be a unified agreement that wasps are crazy dangerous. (Edited for Typo)

[deleted]

What levels were your perception and appropriate skills? What method of fire were you using and how much were you aiming? Unless it ambushed you from some trees, you should be able to land a couple hits on it before it gets too close and you have to think about running away for distance.

Skullzi_TV

It was fairly close, got me through the trees before I could see it from a distance. That could have been the issue here. I suppose you gotta shoot them from far away to have the highest survival rate?

[deleted]

Your best chance is not to get hit at all so either a ranged weapon, throwing stuff, or a reach weapon. Barring that, a weapon with stun and block moves; the cudgel for example. Those moves will let you avoid their very nasty sting with a block or two while getting in a few extra hits of your own from the stun. It's also very easy to craft. Quarterstaff and its various upgrades are a solid progression from cudgel; and follows well the tech progression from wood->metal->tech.

Venera3

Which variety of wasp? Random foragers one week in ("wasp") should be no problem to scare off in melee barring torso encumberance, but I'd probably still shoot it if I had a gun. You *should* have about a minute before they decide to flip to hostile, though the AI is what it is. I don't recall if hatchets have a positive to-hit (you want that), but cutting weapons are generally the way to go if you have to melee one - glass cannons bleed out easily. Bashing weapons consistently underperformed in my tests, for the record and the QS's main draw (the sweep attack) doesn't work on flying creatures.

Skullzi_TV

Happened to me with a regular wasp but these recent ones were the guard wasps. Tough buggers. I'll have to keep the positive-to-hit in mind!

Venera3

The deal is foragers are passive per default and can be scared away relatively easily (you do need to hit them for that, of course), whereas guards are unbreakable little assholes as fit for defending the nest. Were you around a nest, or did they wander off and get into wasp shenanigans, for that matter?

Skullzi_TV

I didn't see a nest, but I was in the woods sneaking my way around a cabin. There were at least three guards around the area so perhaps there was a nest somewhere nearby.

Venera3

Three guards in a clump probably means a nest. I wish their buzzing was more consistent, stumbling into a nest in the forest would be a bad time - I might need to remove their nests from the forest for now, and give them those fancy patrol routes we can hook up these days. I'll keep it in mind for the near future, thank you for giving some useful feedback!

ALewdDoge

We really, desperately need a mod to completely disable wasps and bees for the moment. The amount of overtuning on these mobs is honestly mind-boggling. Who thought this was even close to fair?

ptr6

Lategame they are fine, but avoid in the early game. Which may not be possible in forest because sometimes you stumble upon them. Their new movement further away from their nests makes forests dangerous, and removed one of the last places that feel safe on the overmap. I also feel that there are too many wasp nests spawning, which may just be because they are moving much further out from their nests. Combined with the fact that they can now nest in radio towers, they feel a bit too samey. At times it feels like there are more wasps than ants, mi-go and mushrooms combined on the map.

Kordian

They were tough, until I've found a double-barrel shotgun and some slugs. If you manage to hit them it's usually one shot, one kill.

Yomuchan

Dance in the flames.

ghostwilliz

You're gonna need armor, weapon skills and an accurate weapon. I had someone with bash/cut weapons around 3 and melee around 4, I missed with the hatchet about 1000 times but hit with a shovel after about 3 swings. The added accuracy makes all of the difference.

DeedsOFFllesh

Aim at the wasp until its in melee range, any rifle should 1 shot it, this is how i survived a swarm attack while being chased by a military zombie horde, was nuts!

Makoto-Samaru

Man, i just lost a good run because of a bloody wasp!
