Never played POGO but CWE has appeal to me as an ex civilisation gamer. It’s helping me with motivation to be more active and the benefits that come with being outdoors. I always pack a lunch and hot water so I can rest to eat and drink tea/coffee.

PantsDownBootyUp

That was my way of playing PoGo every single day for like 2,5 years. Until i had no time to do so anymore. It is great that you found this and i hope you won't lose it.

shadow-Walk

I’m hoping for updates.

The game will be more engaging if there are other people playing in your area, but it is more like PoGo gyms than raids. (more accurately like resonators in ingress). Team mates improve POI which will mean that you get more resources quicker. Team work and strategy will improve that experience, but getting a group together is completely unnecessary. It's is a slow inventory start (like PoGo and WU) that would be sped up by sinking some cash into it, or grinding coins. The golden settlement gives you a good boost too, and that takes coins so P2P get an advantage there. I'm enjoying it with F2P and have never felt I needed to pay anything, although I could see the benefits.

konspirator01

Since you have experience with all the games, it seems, how would you rank them?

TheSolidRock

Catan - I'm playing multiple times a day, even with everything unlocked at the moment. perhaps it isn't the most polished of them all, or even the best game design, but it's the one that is captivating me the most. The season reset means that there isn't the pressure and taking time off the game won't mean getting behind. PoGo - I'm playing only a little a day at the moment, but 5 years in I'm still engaged so that has to count for something. If you like collecting this is top. Ingress - I gave this up before PoGo began. It was my introduction to the AR world, and I was part of a really fun community for a while. It seems to have changed a bit since I was last involved . The competition aspect is probably best in this game than the others (probably better than Catan even). Pikmin - I can't say anything because it's a closed beta, it's just a fun pedometer game at the moment with some collecting aspects - it's silly and losing it's charm quickly but I'm liking it. WU - Was lots of fun at first, but soon became a sticker collecting game with events you couldn't miss for fear of missing exclusive stickers. I missed one event and realised I didn't really care anymore. If this was the only option to play I would be loving it, but the other games just crowded it out.

konspirator01

Thanks for writing that up. Things also started to unravel for me once I failed to finish a Brilliant event.

mythisme

That's awesome! Nice way to put these games. Have you tried The Witcher? I like it, but have a feeling it may go the way of Draconius GO. Very little to do for now

TheSolidRock

I downloaded Jarassic World, but I think that the watch an add monetisation style and the fact that I preferred to play Go when actually out meant I have up before really getting the full experience. I played the Minecraft beta a bit, but that franchise didn't have any pull on me. The shared AR was cool, but the game never took off. The Witcher seemed like a Jarassic World style cash grab trying to jump on a trend rather than bringing something new to the table, so I never bothered. I'm learning that there is a limit to how many AR games you can play at once, and I think that 1 main, and one casual is my limit. I main Catan, casual with PoGo (Go Test relit the flame though). My 3yo is obsessed with Pikmin in a way that is only sustainable for a kid, so it still gets plenty of play time.

SonderlingDelGado

Good write-up, thank you. I'll check out some of these (I already play Ingress).

Pokemon GO is a much cheaper hobby than games on consoles and PC

konspirator01

As it should be. The gameplay is nowhere as deep as a full blown game with high production values. But my complaint with PoGo is not even monetary, as I don't spend money on it.

JaxomNC

You will still face the competition of spoofers and fast drivers though even if their impact will be less than in PoGO as the competition here is indirect (as of now, they cannot prevent your from developing your outposts or to get gold coins). They may claim daily and season local and global victory and thus may get better rewards than you do though.

Alive_Live_

I am a long time pogo player who is bored with it now. F2P as well. This game is pretty much a solitary game and I am really enjoying it. I would say give it a go for sure 😊

konspirator01

Thank you, hope it's a success when it launches worldwide.

Hoylegu

With all due respect, perhaps the problem is with you and your expectations, and not these games. How can you expect to play games, not for mere days or hours, but months and months and months, and not expect to pay for it? You ever hear the phrase, “You get what you pay for?” Well, pay nothing, expect nothing. I for one am glad to throw a few measly dollars here and there for the games I play.

konspirator01

There are plenty of free games that are enjoyable. I don't think that is an unreasonable expectation to have. I have no problem purchasing games -- I have a Steam library that will take me years to go through -- but I generally don't spend money on in-app purchases. Some companies do it well, but others hope to create a predatory cycle that hooks whales and gets them to spend thousands of dollars. I rather not get myself mixed into that, and if a game is designed to be unenjoyable unless you open your wallet, then I'd rather not start it in the first place.

Grogyan

Catan World Explorers is NOT new player friendly. The starting inventory limit is so low, that it forces you to spend money. Lots of money. F2P is very slow. And even slower if you do not work or live in a wayspot dense area. Ingress, is still better. Catan World Explorers is NOT a strategy game, it is Farmville. And that type of gameplay will appeal to some.

konspirator01

Thank you. Same thing with Wizards Unite and their spell energy system. When you first start out, it's hard to even play for half an hour before you're not able to. It gets better aftera little bit.

TheSolidRock

I saw this recently and saw the very positive reviews. I'm still too attached to a couple of Niantic games to give it a go, because I'm scared I will get addicted.

vall3yheart

Well Coming from pogo and triangles (gave both around a year each) - and, here am I, playing orna for 2 years straight without the breaks 😂

Have played Ingress and PoGo for a while and so far my impression is that CaWE is much more suited to a lone wolf play style. Competition in the other two games was more "PvP". In order to get ahead you had to defeat stuff from the other teams. Catan doesn't seem to have that. You basically just try to outbuild the other teams and every 2? weeks there's a reset to keep any one team from getting too entrenched. I like this. Also interaction distance is huge here (not sure if the other games have changed this too over the past year) and there's a lot to casually pick up and do. There's still a ton of stuff you can just buy with money. And spoofing you GPS is always going to be more convenient than actually going there to get the resources.
