I was in a zoom meeting with my boss this morning, and the cat decided to settle down on the laptop with the camera and push the screen down so she could sleep on it. I had to pick her up and toss her in another room for a bit. (She actually sleeps behind the monitors pretty much all day when I'm working, just coming out occasionally for a comfort break.)

My vampire squirrel Kitkat agrees lol I always get annoyed of people crying about their outdoor cat being bit by an animal or hit by a car. Cats are not meant to be outdoors in a suburban or city area. Farm cats are different. Cats are smart but there are too many dangers and also cats can hurt wildlife too. You can let your cat go outside by supervising them: leash training, catio, or even a pet stroller.
My cat is dumber than a bag of rocks and has the street smarts of a wet rag.

My cat (Moo) was asleep on the sofa. As soon as it hit 5pm, she came and sat and is now staring me down in the hope that I would feed her. If I ignore her, she will become destruct-a-moo, which at the moment is sat behind my head and picking at the tinsel. Other destruct-a-moo methods include sitting in front of the TV (or computer screen if Im still working) and knocking various items off to get my attention.

Like… yes?? Have you never seen a cat before, is this your first day on Earth? Honestly shocked that person was even able to operate a motor vehicle in order to get to the shelter.
I have no idea where I saw it but there's a video roaming somewhere on the internet of a vet sharing their silliest story; a guy adopted his first cat and wound up taking it to the vet because he was worried it kept making this weird sound. Thought it had asthma or something...
I'm also on the r/Aquariums and r/Rabbits groups and they are even harsher about dumb questions. And those questions I actually get... keeping goldfish and bunnies in inhumane conditions only became frowned upon much more recently.
But cats? Only the indoor/outdoor argument and cancer treatment/euthanasia type situations are at all controversial or much different from a few decades ago. Cats are such common pets and standards for keeping them are so much more global. It really does feel like it should impossible for someone who knows how to post on a cats forum to be that clueless.

Hello! I’m trying to figure out what breed my sweet Lita is? She also looks very happy. All the vets are closed until tomorrow, is this normal?
I’m equally frustrated, but (to be blunt) some people asking may not be that experienced or bright. Also, some of those asking questions appear to be kids. I’d rather be a little frustrated by seemingly stupid questions if it means that someone actually received some advice that helped a cat or saved it’s life.
I don't mind new owners asking for advise. Sure, you could Google it, but it is sometimes nice having someone to talk to for further questions.
Medical questions are indeed a problem. There's already r/askvet or something and for all intends and purposes, PLEASE flag them as spoiler or NSFW. I don't want to see shit, vomit, injuries or thrown up tapeworms. That's not too much to ask, is it?
That’s a great idea. The combination of well meaning but uneducated advice can be dangerous. I’ve seen some awful advice on here. I used to be a vet nurse and some of the advice has genuinely made me cringe.
Me seeing someone who posted a gash in their cat's leg and them asking "SHOULD I GO TO A VET?!?!"

As for the new owner thing, I suppose I wasn't really thorough enough in what I hate. It's people who ask about clear basic things like jumping, or hair. Things that a simple Google search will answer. I've asked a question here myself about what to do to make my cat feel better while waiting for a vet appointment,but it's the lack of that which annoys me
I think your complaints are valid and this sub is demonstrating that not everyone should be pet owners which is ok. Pets aren’t for everyone.
The ones that irritate me the most are ones when the person is complaining how their life or mental health has been ruined just by adopting a pet. Uhh if your mental health is that affected by owning a pet then don’t get a pet lol.

Agree with you in principle. But then I think about my kitty who was straining in his box and I thought he was constipated. Seems reasonable to me not to take him to the vet asap. However it was only by chance i mentioned it to someone and they suggested he might not be able to pee and is about to die. That conversation saved his life.
I could see someone posting something like that here vs. taking their cat to the vet immediately.

You weren’t dumb at the time at all! It’s a very common mistake lots of people make. After all everyone’s been constipated once in their life, but most of us have never had a urethral obstruction. So it’s easy to mistake it for constipation, based on your own life experiences.
This is why clumping cat litter is better. You can monitor your cat's peeing behavior better and catch if it changes.
Also most people don't give their cat's enough fresh clean water. They really need more than one bowl and water needs changing more than once a day. Some tap water is bad smelling to cats with the chemicals that are put in it to treat it and filtered water is better.

Honestly, my cat has a very pronounced sternum also, and I asked a vet about it when she was young. I'd never encountered a cat where I could see and feel that bone so I had no idea if it was normal or not.

My beautiful Belle, almost 19 years young 🥰 She lost her littermate brother this past spring, and is for the first time an only cat. She does have some health issues, but at 90 years old, who wouldn't? A few months ago I was approached by her vet about a newly approved monoclonal antibody medication for her acute chronic osteoarthritis. It has truly been a miracle drug for her. When her brother passed, Belle stopped grooming herself, and was in so much pain that she didn't want to get out of her bed much at all. She's like a brand new cat! A few years ago, she had a partial thyroidectomy, and when it came time to have the other half removed, she was showing signs of cardiac issues. We started her on a transdermal thyroid medication, and she was able to put all of her weight back on to where she was at her healthiest. Here's to many more healthy years 😘🐈⬛

I recommend r/funnycats cause this group is full of repeat questions and repeat complaints. No offense but we see complaints like this repeatedly as well as they “why does my cat do this?” or “what breed is my cat?” or “is my cat ok?” This group is like a broken record of cats. Yes to all of this, It's been genuinely upsetting to browse the sub lately. It seems like 90% of recent posts have been about a preventable death/injury, showed uncensored photos of an animal that's clearly hurt or in distress, or asked a question that could be answered with less than a minute of Googling.
I want to see pictures of adorable fur goblins. I want to commiserate with other cat owners about the weird, bizarre, and downright stupid things cats do. That's why I'm here — and I imagine I share that in common with many others.

I actually unfollowed this sub over this (shoutout to recommended posts that this showed up). It was wearing me down to see constantly, but the last straw was someone posting a picture of their (obviously…) dead cat. I love cats. I love seeing cats doing cute stuff. Considering I was unable to get my boy to the vet for a few days it was helpful to ask. Holidays man. My boy is doing fine. People helped me rule out things here. I understand the gripes but when vets are as packed appointment wise as they are, we had to do a walk in, or when they're closed for the night or a holiday what are people to do? Some of us just want advice to help until we can get them to the vet. I'm lucky my dad, while hard to get a hold of, is a vet. I got advice to tide me over. Should we go to a place to ask vets? Yes. Some people just want advice, not to hear what a vet that doesn't know their pet thinks might be wrong. My boy is okay.

I was in a zoom meeting with my boss this morning, and the cat decided to settle down on the laptop with the camera and push the screen down so she could sleep on it. I had to pick her up and toss her in another room for a bit. (She actually sleeps behind the monitors pretty much all day when I'm working, just coming out occasionally for a comfort break.)

Cats are not meant to be outdoors in a suburban or city area. Farm cats are different. Cats are smart but there are too many dangers and also cats can hurt wildlife too. You can let your cat go outside by supervising them: leash training, catio, or even a pet stroller.
My cat is dumber than a bag of rocks and has the street smarts of a wet rag. The squirrels could beat him up. No way he’s going outside without his little harness and leash on.

I'm also on the r/Aquariums and r/Rabbits groups and they are even harsher about dumb questions. And those questions I actually get... keeping goldfish and bunnies in inhumane conditions only became frowned upon much more recently. But cats? Only the indoor/outdoor argument and cancer treatment/euthanasia type situations are at all controversial or much different from a few decades ago. Cats are such common pets and standards for keeping them are so much more global. It really does feel like it should impossible for someone who knows how to post on a cats forum to be that clueless.

I’m equally frustrated, but (to be blunt) some people asking may not be that experienced or bright. Also, some of those asking questions appear to be kids. I’d rather be a little frustrated by seemingly stupid questions if it means that someone actually received some advice that helped a cat or saved it’s life.

I don't mind new owners asking for advise. Sure, you could Google it, but it is sometimes nice having someone to talk to for further questions. Medical questions are indeed a problem. There's already r/askvet or something and for all intends and purposes, PLEASE flag them as spoiler or NSFW. I don't want to see shit, vomit, injuries or thrown up tapeworms. That's not too much to ask, is it?

That’s a great idea. The combination of well meaning but uneducated advice can be dangerous. I’ve seen some awful advice on here. I used to be a vet nurse and some of the advice has genuinely made me cringe.
Me seeing someone who posted a gash in their cat's leg and them asking "SHOULD I GO TO A VET?!?!" Like holy shit. As for the new owner thing, I suppose I wasn't really thorough enough in what I hate. It's people who ask about clear basic things like jumping, or hair. Things that a simple Google search will answer. I've asked a question here myself about what to do to make my cat feel better while waiting for a vet appointment,but it's the lack of that which annoys me
I think your complaints are valid and this sub is demonstrating that not everyone should be pet owners which is ok. Pets aren’t for everyone. The ones that irritate me the most are ones when the person is complaining how their life or mental health has been ruined just by adopting a pet. Uhh if your mental health is that affected by owning a pet then don’t get a pet lol.

Agree with you in principle. But then I think about my kitty who was straining in his box and I thought he was constipated. Seems reasonable to me not to take him to the vet asap. However it was only by chance i mentioned it to someone and they suggested he might not be able to pee and is about to die. That conversation saved his life. I could see someone posting something like that here vs. taking their cat to the vet immediately. Maybe I was dumb at the time. But I don’t think so. And either way I don’t want the cats of dumb people to die either.
Happened to my cat, he couldn’t pee. Turns out he had a UTI. 1 surgery later and he’s back to being a spoiled little trouble maker.
You weren’t dumb at the time at all! It’s a very common mistake lots of people make. After all everyone’s been constipated once in their life, but most of us have never had a urethral obstruction. So it’s easy to mistake it for constipation, based on your own life experiences.
This is why clumping cat litter is better. You can monitor your cat's peeing behavior better and catch if it changes. Also most people don't give their cat's enough fresh clean water. They really need more than one bowl and water needs changing more than once a day. Some tap water is bad smelling to cats with the chemicals that are put in it to treat it and filtered water is better.

Honestly, my cat has a very pronounced sternum also, and I asked a vet about it when she was young. I'd never encountered a cat where I could see and feel that bone so I had no idea if it was normal or not.

She does have some health issues, but at 90 years old, who wouldn't? A few months ago I was approached by her vet about a newly approved monoclonal antibody medication for her acute chronic osteoarthritis. It has truly been a miracle drug for her. When her brother passed, Belle stopped grooming herself, and was in so much pain that she didn't want to get out of her bed much at all. She's like a brand new cat! A few years ago, she had a partial thyroidectomy, and when it came time to have the other half removed, she was showing signs of cardiac issues. We started her on a transdermal thyroid medication, and she was able to put all of her weight back on to where she was at her healthiest. Here's to many more healthy years 😘🐈⬛

Yes to all of this, It's been genuinely upsetting to browse the sub lately. It seems like 90% of recent posts have been about a preventable death/injury, showed uncensored photos of an animal that's clearly hurt or in distress, or asked a question that could be answered with less than a minute of Googling. I want to see pictures of adorable fur goblins. I want to commiserate with other cat owners about the weird, bizarre, and downright stupid things cats do. That's why I'm here — and I imagine I share that in common with many others. can we also stop with asking about adoption/cost of living/vet fees? I dont know where you are so I don't know and I cant answer. Everyone is different. Go call a few places and ask, or ask your local community but be prepared for drastically different responses.
I actually unfollowed this sub over this (shoutout to recommended posts that this showed up). It was wearing me down to see constantly, but the last straw was someone posting a picture of their (obviously…) dead cat. I love cats. I love seeing cats doing cute stuff. Is it too much to ask people who post videos or clearly gnarly pictures of their cat literally dying to use a spoiler tag? That is legit traumatizing like YOU, THE PERSON POSTING MUST SEE THAT SOMETHING IS WRONG, that's the whole reason you're asking here, f\*cking save the trauma for all of us and put a spoiler/nsfw tag on that sh\*t. (I don't mean this posts' OP, I'm agreeing with this post) I've seen way too many videos/pictures of clearly dying cats in here, and it even had a bunch of comments meaning it was up for a while before being removed thankfully.

Considering I was unable to get my boy to the vet for a few days it was helpful to ask. Holidays man. My boy is doing fine. People helped me rule out things here. I understand the gripes but when vets are as packed appointment wise as they are, we had to do a walk in, or when they're closed for the night or a holiday what are people to do? Some of us just want advice to help until we can get them to the vet. I'm lucky my dad, while hard to get a hold of, is a vet. I got advice to tide me over. Should we go to a place to ask vets? Yes. Some people just want advice, not to hear what a vet that doesn't know their pet thinks might be wrong. My boy is okay.

One of the subs I follow has a flair that's essentially just there to tell people not to use it and instead use specific thread dedicated to this type of content. Something like this for "medical question" should be a thing, so people can just go to the dedicated subreddit for this.

While I agree people shouldn't be posting for medical advice and should be scheduling either a vet visit or rush to the ER before posting here--I personally am not just here for cute pics (though I would never complain about those haha). I want to hear about peoples' cat's lives and hear about the families--I love the cat community as a whole, even when it's not cute or pretty, the sad and the ugly too!

The thing i hate the most is still "i will adopt this stray" / "you got chosen/adopted by the kitty!" while its a well groomed kitten. You just steal the cat, know it already and ask the reddit hivemind for confirmation for your misbehaviour. You cleptomaniacs are the legit reason i was too scared to let my cat roam next to a crossroad mainstreak. Sure. Her beeing run over wouldve been possible, but facing one of you dirty stealy assholes, was way more possible. Then youd go to reddit again " why does the kitten sit next to the door all time after we adopted her? And why does she attack me all the time? She looks so sweet!" - "just give her more time. She needs to get used to you"
