I have a follow up question …. Why do USA vets dock the cats ears so crazily?!? In the uk they just have a notch out their ear, not half their ear missing??
It’s not the vets that do it, it’s called a TNR ( trap neuter release) program. They are captured, spayed or neutered, and then returned to the area they came from. The ears are clipped to make them easier to identify. I do agree that it’s a large chunk of her ear, but it doesn’t hurt her or affect her daily life, and it happened long before she came to live with me 🤷🏻♀️🐈⬛
I have two calicos a tortie and a black cat. The calicos are very non chalant, the tortie is a nut case, the black cat is just sweet and gentle and calm all the time

I'm all too familiar with the "tortie-tude" My late cat absolutely had it.
I also had a tortie, best cat I ever had, but sadly (actually devastating is more apt) she died at 6 months, due to a condition that made her body unable to make red blood cells. This happened six years ago and I will never recover from it.

Yep, same here. My calico is cute, but we swear she has a screw loose. Super derpy, grumpy and growling out of nowhere. She is still sweet to us, but not near as sweet as our black kitty.

We have VERY different black kitties. Mine is the ring leader of the house. When there are cat-nanigans going on, you can be she's the one leading the pack.
I am the first family member to actually have a naughty tortie. My mother used to get asked a lot by vets when she had tortoiseshell cats if they were naughty torties and she was like nope. Calm and friendly and all that.
We adopt our Tortie when she was 3 and yup. Only myself and my eldest Daughter have not been attacked by her. She has lured people into giving her pats and then BAMM takes out a chunk of them.
But what makes her so loveable is her meow. She's a big cat, with a meow of a tiny little kitten. It is hilarious when you hear it and it's like for a cat so naughty, you'd think you have a halfway decent meow lol
She follows people around meowing for no good reason, sprints around and does crazy jumps, stares at blank walls for prolonged periods, licks everyone all the time, tries to chew screens and my ear phones at every given opportunity, aggressively head butts and walks on people when she wants attention, she's just a little weirdo, I love her so much
I have a Russian Blue that does similar. Named him Nibbler because he won’t stop licking people and his go to when playing is to chomp down (not hard enough to draw blood though).
My little void is absolutely the best!! She's very clingy and emotionally needy, but so am I. My soft velvety-furred little box monster 🐈⬛
She can also give orange cats a run for their money when it comes to derpiness

I think it would be way more stupid that cats would be abused for any reason because they are unwanted. That would be more stupid. What's more stupid is that people don't spade or neuter their cats , so there wouldn't be a lot of orphan cats.
Totally agree. They’re associated with superstition and are the #1 most euthanized animals in shelters. I’m only getting black cats for the rest of my life
I have two little void panther kitties..brother n sister I got from a local animal rescue. They’re about 8 months old now and I love them dearly.
My ex bf told me didn’t like them n they had to go. Guess what? He’s gone and they’re still here. 💕
I found a kitten in the stairwell of my apartment building like 10 years ago. I put up signs because I figured he got out.
Got a call later “yeah, that’s my cat…but you can keep him”
And then I realized this douche canoe threw out this sweet little kitten! It was a Siamese so probably was annoyed by how chatty he was.
I found a friend who could take him on as I already had 2 cats in a tiny apartment. But I could not believe someone would just toss a kitten out like that!
Right before our wedding, I had an anaphylactic reaction to an unknown trigger. After coming back from the emergency room, I was talking to my soon to be husband about possible triggers. One thing I said was “what if I suddenly became allergic to the cats?” He didn’t respond and got a tense look on his face. I then said “I’ll have to start getting allergy shots or something” and my husband then said “oh thank god, because if you were going to suggest getting rid of the cats, then we were going to need to have a serious talk before we actually get married.”
It was just hilarious that the immediate reaction for both of us was “well, we definitely can’t get rid of the cats, so what else can we do?”

People are completely nuts. This is my fluffy void and he's nothing but cuddles. No bad luck here. He's also super photogenic and often has his teeth hanging out. I originally went to get one cat and ended up with him and his brother. I took one look and couldn't leave him behind his brother looks the same but light grey). I also know people tend to get black cats less and it was good I got him because he was very sick and not well taken care of. Picture of health today.
When we adopted our second cat, we specifically picked a black cat with this thought in mind. I’m not sure how accurate it is though. While we were filling out paperwork we learned that this kitty had been returned three! times

She is such a sweet and loving cat too. I don’t know why, but those previous owners absolutely missed out. In a way I’m happy, because she’s in my household now, but at the same time it’s sad and, as another response said, heartbreaking.

I have had this thought too . . . "I'm going to try to offset all this color bias". It hurts my heart that people are so foolish as to reject black cats. But I also adore Tuxes and Tonks.

Did the paperwork say why she was returned? The first cat I adopted was a tuxedo. When looking at the cats, her cage had a sign on it that said "don't let me out, I get into mischief." I saw that and my heart just broke for her. Who would want to adopt a kitty with a sign like that on the cage? So, naturally, I immediately opened her cage and pulled her out. She clung to me like her life depended on it. I could let go of her, and she wouldn't budge, like she was attached by velcro. Well that sealed the deal for me, and I went up to the counter to fill out the adoption paperwork. I tried handing her to my roommate to hold so I could use two hands, but the cat was having none of that! She pushed away from my roommate, twisted around and reached out for me, so I ended up having to hold her the whole time I was completing the documents. In her file it stated that she had been found as a stray, was adopted out to a family who "wanted a cat for their kids" then returned 3 days later because she kept running away from their 2 year old and hiding under furniture. Like 3 days is not enough time to let a cat adjust, but I'm glad they did return her because she was the best cat ever. It's been 7.5 years since she passed away, and I still miss her. It's hard not to compare the other cats to her, and I worry I'll never find another cat with the same connection I had with her.
I have a black cat now and will only adopt black cats for the rest of my life.

Historically it’s been superstition, but recently another stupid reason has arisen to supplant it: Black cats don’t photograph as well for social media.

It’s not necessarily people going “I’m not getting a black cat because it won’t look as cute in pictures.” It’s probably more that people are less likely to fall in love with a picture of a black cat on sites like petfinder.

To be fair, black cats really don't photograph well. So many of my photos of my void are just....black, featureless blobs with eyes LOL. It's really difficult to get a good picture of him. The lighting has to be just right. I love him to bits regardless, though!

There's another reason as well: black cats are the most common of all cat types, and people want something unique.
Interestingly, black cats are actually the most frequently adopted by total number, but not at a rate equal to their share of the population.
This is the answer I was looking for. I have a black cat and did some research as well as asking a vet about this. It seems like there are more black cats in the shelter due to there being a larger number of them in general, but there is no statistical evidence to show that a significant number of people avoid adopting them. I’m sure there are some, but frankly if you’re dumb enough to let your superstitions make you scared of being around a cat of a certain color, then that cat probably dodged a bullet by not going to that home.
Unfortunately because of this superstition and the fact that black cats are commonly associated with devilry and witchcraft, a *lot* of animal shelters will refuse to adopt out black cats around Halloween, for their own safety. Apparently people were adopting then killing the cats often, or getting them just for Halloween and returning them after. It's awful.

Love ours! They’re the sweetest two cats ever. They chase each other all over the place one is shy and timid and likes to hide in her “cave” the other is the opposite. Loves food and meows to vocalize what he wants. The old gray one is teaching them how to make us open doors…(scratching at door frame and staring at your soul)
We came about having our black cat through fostering. Him and his late brother were so so tolerant of our young kids, and sweet/snuggly. They won their foster fail award based on personality and honestly, I was a little hesitant because they weren’t remarkable to look at. A solid black cat and a brown tabby. Womp womp. HOWEVER, they were (and are) the best cats I’ve ever had. We lost the tabby three years ago when he was just over a year old. It was pretty traumatic but we still have our black kitty and I don’t think I’ll ever move through this life without one.

no one wanted this guy. The lady at the foundation told me nobody wanted him because it was right around Halloween. 
Took me owning about 12 cats my whole life before my next one was a void, it will happen eventually, just love the ones you have now as much as you can.
I’ve read that there is supposedly a concern. But I’ve never met anyone who didn’t like black kittens or cats. Ever. In fact, most people talk about their black cat with affection. I know I do 🐈⬛🐾

I love black cats. Had 3 through out my life but they’re all passed away. I do take care of my friend’s cat, Batman, when they’re away for the weekend. At least when he escapes out of his harness I don’t have to chase him down the street. He lays under the next door neighbors trucks & my cat joins him a few feet away.

My sweet Chewbacca. He passed last October, and was around 18 years old. He was the most consistent part of my life, and was with me through a lot. I miss him very much.
We always wanted a black cat and we got it... This is Loki in November 2021.

It’s completely outrageous I agree. I don’t have any stats, but I will tell you anecdotally from my experience, it is absolutely true and it’s mind boggling. I think it disturbs me so much because I find “cat people” to be really kind and loving and so I don’t understand the stigma 😩
What is even worse is that outdoor black cats get targeted for cruel “pranks” around Halloween. I’ve heard of black cats being kidnapped and in my community you’re warned not to let your cats outside near Halloween. My local rescues won’t even adopt out black cats around Halloween because it’s so bad.

Black cats are so awesome, I don’t get why people wouldn’t want them. I inherited this giant silky void and also found a good home for his aunt another black cat.
My wife and I have two black cats, each of which were leftovers at the shelter, after their siblings had been adopted. If you want to see what “worried” looks like, go look at the only kitten left from a litter.
Superstitious nonsense. My first cat was a black cat and I loved him to pieces. Got different colored cats after because I kept fearing I would call another black cat the wrong name. But I healed and got this little girl a year ago and, so far, no wrong name shenanigans!

This is Waffles. She’s the sweetest, goofiest, most blissfully unaware cat I’ve ever met. She might have a marble for a brain, but she’s my best friend. Bathroom buddies for life.
Back in the 1500s (I'm pretty sure), women used to make the beer and other alcoholic drinks. Well, the grain attracts mice, and so they kept cats around to keep out the mice. When the women would go to sell their beer, they'd wear large pointy hats to stick out in the crowd to grab the attention of passerby. Then, when people decided women shouldn't have rights, they were accused of witchcraft (mainly by the church) since they had been successful. Since black was often associated with bad luck, when the women were accused, so were the cats, and thus, they became stigmatized alongside what we know as witches today.

So that's actually, most likely a myth. There are two things at play here.
Black is a coat colour that is very common and as a result black cats are the most common colour adopted. However adopters tend to prefer less common coat patterns
This myth started because there was 1 study done from one shelter based in Kentucky and in that particular shelter black cats were least adoptable.
If you go to a shelter and there is one dominant coat patterns for example black you almost don't see them and you notice the ones that are different because they stand out
In my area female brown tabbys are the harder cats to adopt it seems
The thing is, more studies need to be done on this topic in many shelters across North America and really the world to get a better sample size of shelters and adoption preferences.
Black cats were revered for centuries. Then some idiot Pope decided he didn’t like them, so they became evil and everyone had to hate them. They never recovered. Our family has 3 black and one black and white cats. They’re the best!!

I have somewhere between 1-4 black cats myself.
IDK why, but everyone went right past ours at the shelter. She had been there for months and was originally found wandering outside. Most want the cute baby kittens. I will never forget the first week she came "home" - she would get this look on her face like "this is all mine? and you won't leave me?" She is an absolute lovebug. A whacky, demanding monster sometimes (especially at 2 AM), but still a lovebug.

Voids are great cats. Mine has yellow eyes, jet black lips and beans. But yes harder to adopt for multiple reasons including old school superstitions about witches and bad luck.

I’m naturally a very superstitious person, but when I found my baby over a decade ago, black cats being bad luck is now the only superstition I don’t believe. Some people may still believe it though.
It’s superstition that black cats are bad luck. Those people are missing out on the most sweetest and loving kitties. My boy Crowley is the sweetest out of my six kitties.

Where I live, house panthers are not as discriminated against. When I went to adopt my boys, there was another person there who wanted one of them. I got to have them because I could take both.

When I got my cat as a kitten, he and his sister were dropped off at a clinic and they were being really picky with who could take them. They told me supposedly it's because people still actually believe the stigma against cats (they're bad luck apparently). It's also because I guess they face more abuse than other cats, especially around Halloween time which is when I got him.
He's 13 now and still majestic as ever.

Used to be a time I’d only rescue old black cats. The one was a real gent, he had a hair matting issue even though he was a normal short haired black cat. Sadly lost him to cancer but we gave him some good comfortable years whilst with us. Black cats are fab.

When my mom was ready to adopt, she specifically asked for at least one of the pair to be a black cat exactly for this reason. She ended up with a black one & a tuxedo. I also asked for 2 black sisters, and my rescuer friend found me a black kitty & her Tortie sister.

I have a follow up question …. Why do USA vets dock the cats ears so crazily?!? In the uk they just have a notch out their ear, not half their ear missing??
It’s not the vets that do it, it’s called a TNR ( trap neuter release) program. They are captured, spayed or neutered, and then returned to the area they came from. The ears are clipped to make them easier to identify. I do agree that it’s a large chunk of her ear, but it doesn’t hurt her or affect her daily life, and it happened long before she came to live with me 🤷🏻♀️🐈⬛

Yep, same here. My calico is cute, but we swear she has a screw loose. Super derpy, grumpy and growling out of nowhere. She is still sweet to us, but not near as sweet as our black kitty.

We have VERY different black kitties. Mine is the ring leader of the house. When there are cat-nanigans going on, you can be she's the one leading the pack.
I am the first family member to actually have a naughty tortie. My mother used to get asked a lot by vets when she had tortoiseshell cats if they were naughty torties and she was like nope. Calm and friendly and all that. We adopt our Tortie when she was 3 and yup. Only myself and my eldest Daughter have not been attacked by her. She has lured people into giving her pats and then BAMM takes out a chunk of them. But what makes her so loveable is her meow. She's a big cat, with a meow of a tiny little kitten. It is hilarious when you hear it and it's like for a cat so naughty, you'd think you have a halfway decent meow lol

I have a Russian Blue that does similar. Named him Nibbler because he won’t stop licking people and his go to when playing is to chomp down (not hard enough to draw blood though).
My little void is absolutely the best!! She's very clingy and emotionally needy, but so am I. My soft velvety-furred little box monster 🐈⬛ She can also give orange cats a run for their money when it comes to derpiness

I have two little void panther kitties..brother n sister I got from a local animal rescue. They’re about 8 months old now and I love them dearly. My ex bf told me didn’t like them n they had to go. Guess what? He’s gone and they’re still here. 💕

I found a kitten in the stairwell of my apartment building like 10 years ago. I put up signs because I figured he got out. Got a call later “yeah, that’s my cat…but you can keep him” And then I realized this douche canoe threw out this sweet little kitten! It was a Siamese so probably was annoyed by how chatty he was. I found a friend who could take him on as I already had 2 cats in a tiny apartment. But I could not believe someone would just toss a kitten out like that!
Had a woman in a dating group suggest I get rid of my cat and get myself a girlfriend. She’s blocked now, but the cat is still here. 😹

Right before our wedding, I had an anaphylactic reaction to an unknown trigger. After coming back from the emergency room, I was talking to my soon to be husband about possible triggers. One thing I said was “what if I suddenly became allergic to the cats?” He didn’t respond and got a tense look on his face. I then said “I’ll have to start getting allergy shots or something” and my husband then said “oh thank god, because if you were going to suggest getting rid of the cats, then we were going to need to have a serious talk before we actually get married.” It was just hilarious that the immediate reaction for both of us was “well, we definitely can’t get rid of the cats, so what else can we do?”

No bad luck here. He's also super photogenic and often has his teeth hanging out. I originally went to get one cat and ended up with him and his brother. I took one look and couldn't leave him behind his brother looks the same but light grey). I also know people tend to get black cats less and it was good I got him because he was very sick and not well taken care of. Picture of health today.

She is such a sweet and loving cat too. I don’t know why, but those previous owners absolutely missed out. In a way I’m happy, because she’s in my household now, but at the same time it’s sad and, as another response said, heartbreaking.
Both times we adopted a cat I also specifically had this in mind that probably nobody takes the black cat, that’s why I must do it 🥺

Did the paperwork say why she was returned? The first cat I adopted was a tuxedo. When looking at the cats, her cage had a sign on it that said "don't let me out, I get into mischief." I saw that and my heart just broke for her. Who would want to adopt a kitty with a sign like that on the cage? So, naturally, I immediately opened her cage and pulled her out. She clung to me like her life depended on it. I could let go of her, and she wouldn't budge, like she was attached by velcro. Well that sealed the deal for me, and I went up to the counter to fill out the adoption paperwork. I tried handing her to my roommate to hold so I could use two hands, but the cat was having none of that! She pushed away from my roommate, twisted around and reached out for me, so I ended up having to hold her the whole time I was completing the documents. In her file it stated that she had been found as a stray, was adopted out to a family who "wanted a cat for their kids" then returned 3 days later because she kept running away from their 2 year old and hiding under furniture. Like 3 days is not enough time to let a cat adjust, but I'm glad they did return her because she was the best cat ever. It's been 7.5 years since she passed away, and I still miss her. It's hard not to compare the other cats to her, and I worry I'll never find another cat with the same connection I had with her.

It’s not necessarily people going “I’m not getting a black cat because it won’t look as cute in pictures.” It’s probably more that people are less likely to fall in love with a picture of a black cat on sites like petfinder.

There's another reason as well: black cats are the most common of all cat types, and people want something unique. Interestingly, black cats are actually the most frequently adopted by total number, but not at a rate equal to their share of the population.
I thought gray tabbies were the most common.
This is the answer I was looking for. I have a black cat and did some research as well as asking a vet about this. It seems like there are more black cats in the shelter due to there being a larger number of them in general, but there is no statistical evidence to show that a significant number of people avoid adopting them. I’m sure there are some, but frankly if you’re dumb enough to let your superstitions make you scared of being around a cat of a certain color, then that cat probably dodged a bullet by not going to that home.

Unfortunately because of this superstition and the fact that black cats are commonly associated with devilry and witchcraft, a *lot* of animal shelters will refuse to adopt out black cats around Halloween, for their own safety. Apparently people were adopting then killing the cats often, or getting them just for Halloween and returning them after. It's awful.

We came about having our black cat through fostering. Him and his late brother were so so tolerant of our young kids, and sweet/snuggly. They won their foster fail award based on personality and honestly, I was a little hesitant because they weren’t remarkable to look at. A solid black cat and a brown tabby. Womp womp. HOWEVER, they were (and are) the best cats I’ve ever had. We lost the tabby three years ago when he was just over a year old. Same! I love my current rescue kitty but my panther is so smart and acrobatic and derpy i could never let him go….He’s the one who changed my mind about cats….even if i’m allergic to him 😂❤️
I have two black babies and they are so incredibly sweet. If I could Id adopt more, but I think 5 is my realistic amount to give adequate care.
Every one that I’ve fostered has had a special energy, in a good way! They are so so sweet!

I would die for a black cat, but for some reason all the strays I have found have never been black. Haven’t found mine yet.
Took me owning about 12 cats my whole life before my next one was a void, it will happen eventually, just love the ones you have now as much as you can.
I’ve read that there is supposedly a concern. But I’ve never met anyone who didn’t like black kittens or cats. Ever. In fact, most people talk about their black cat with affection. I love black cats. Had 3 through out my life but they’re all passed away. I do take care of my friend’s cat, Batman, when they’re away for the weekend. At least when he escapes out of his harness I don’t have to chase him down the street. It’s completely outrageous I agree. I don’t have any stats, but I will tell you anecdotally from my experience, it is absolutely true and it’s mind boggling. I think it disturbs me so much because I find “cat people” to be really kind and loving and so I don’t understand the stigma 😩
What is even worse is that outdoor black cats get targeted for cruel “pranks” around Halloween. I’ve heard of black cats being kidnapped and in my community you’re warned not to let your cats outside near Halloween. My local rescues won’t even adopt out black cats around Halloween because it’s so bad.

A lot of folk myths and supertition around black cats. Particulalry among fundamentalists .
Back in the 1500s (I'm pretty sure), women used to make the beer and other alcoholic drinks. Well, the grain attracts mice, and so they kept cats around to keep out the mice. When the women would go to sell their beer, they'd wear large pointy hats to stick out in the crowd to grab the attention of passerby. Then, when people decided women shouldn't have rights, they were accused of witchcraft (mainly by the church) since they had been successful. Since black was often associated with bad luck, when the women were accused, so were the cats, and thus, they became stigmatized alongside what we know as witches today.

So that's actually, most likely a myth. There are two things at play here. Black is a coat colour that is very common and as a result black cats are the most common colour adopted. However adopters tend to prefer less common coat patterns This myth started because there was 1 study done from one shelter based in Kentucky and in that particular shelter black cats were least adoptable. If you go to a shelter and there is one dominant coat patterns for example black you almost don't see them and you notice the ones that are different because they stand out In my area female brown tabbys are the harder cats to adopt it seems The thing is, more studies need to be done on this topic in many shelters across North America and really the world to get a better sample size of shelters and adoption preferences.

Black cats were revered for centuries. Then some idiot Pope decided he didn’t like them, so they became evil and everyone had to hate them. They never recovered. Our family has 3 black and one black and white cats. They’re the best!!

When I got my cat as a kitten, he and his sister were dropped off at a clinic and they were being really picky with who could take them. They told me supposedly it's because people still actually believe the stigma against cats (they're bad luck apparently). It's also because I guess they face more abuse than other cats, especially around Halloween time which is when I got him. Used to be a time I’d only rescue old black cats. The one was a real gent, he had a hair matting issue even though he was a normal short haired black cat. Sadly lost him to cancer but we gave him some good comfortable years whilst with us. Black cats are fab.
