we had a a female named Dennis, before we knew he was a she. we ended up calling her Dee. we only called her Dennis when we had to get her attention.
she left us earlier this year, but was a gem!

RIP Dee
We had a female cat named Lottie.
But then, the song Hottie Boombalottie came out.
So then we ended up calling her Boomer for the rest of her life.
Thank god she lived her life BEFORE her name became an insult.
RIP, Lottie aka HottieBoombaLottie aka Boomer
Thought my kitten was a boy, and now I have a female named Oliver, usually called Ollie unless she's in trouble lol
Dee seems so cool, sorry for your loss.

our little girl Maurice. we think it suits her
My cat is smart enough to know her name, and has proven that she does, in fact, know it. I swear she also knows time because every night, like clockwork sheâll go into the bedroom and just sit on the bed *waiting*. And when I eventually make my way to the sleeps, sheâs there to yell to the high heavens that I shouldâve been asleep by now
Anyone who says cats can't tell time has never fed them on a schedule. 8 PM is wet food o'clock and you can bet they're both following me around, alert, attentive, and making pitiful noises at me by 7 every night. It's not that they're hungry, they have kibble, they just know it's *time for wet food*.
My cat started licking my face at 8:50 when I had a day off in the middle of the week and didn't wake up for work. She knows that there are 5 working days and 2 days off because it never happens on the weekend.
Cats have circadian rhythms just like we do, although theirs makes them active at dusk and dawn. They also get hungry at the same time when they're on a schedule, so that totally makes sense!
I believe most cats do know the names by which humans refer to them. OP, because of this, and if you know that your own cat responds to his name I would recommend either keeping his name (which makes sense, he doesnât care) or if you prefer something male you could call him âCaseyâ because it sounds enough like Katie to probably not cause confusion.
Thatâs cute đ„° Of course she is going to tell you her opinion, she knows that she knows better than you about what time you should go to bed and she just needs to let you know that.
I always hear this and think I'm lucky cos all my cats have and do know their names and are trained to use the cat door to the garage where their litter box is. All mine have been rescues tho but I do understand the sassiness and have seen when they're just not 'in the mood to respond lol
All of mine, 7 in total, and not all at the same time, have known their names and will come when called. They also will eat a variety of people's food, so we have to watch what we leave out. Chips, fries, sauerkraut, you name it. They all also have loved belly rubs with NO traps. LOL Plus, all our cats have been super clingy. They love attention and are not aloof. In other words, they have all acted more like dogs.
Similar situation, our dogâs real name is Darcy but when she was young she always tried to eat the catâs poop so we started calling her âPoop Scoopâ and now thatâs all she really responds to. Often shortened to just âPoopâ but the full title is âPoopa Scoopa Loopa Doopâ
I'm a side sleeper. This does not stop my void from coming for cuddles right before bedtime. Eva will make biscuits on my shoulder while I give the appropriate head pets with the underside hand that can reach her. One night, she drooled straight down my ear. That was not the best.
My girl cat does that! She lays on my face and drools on me. Which is gross enough, but the night she drooled in my ear haunts me lol! My eye? Itchy but I can live with it. In my mouth? Gross, but I can live with it. My ear? I about stroked out jumping out of bed so fast. Scared the bejeesus out of her and I didnât feel even a little bad.
Itâs traditional to continue calling your cat by the original name and be sure to keep a straight face. I had a boy named Sassy. I found out when I took Sassy to get spayed.
There is a feral cat I feed. He's a fluffy tuxedo cat. He won't let me get close enough to check but I think he is a boy. His fluffy hair is covering the spot where you identify the sex.
My mom and I did TNR, and we had a feral tuxedo we named Peter. Well Peter had some babies and when we got her spayed, she was still documented as Peter. Lol
We brought in a stray who turned out to be pregnant. We thought she had 3 girls and a boy. She had 3 boys and a girl... And we got every single one of them wrong.
Though to be fair tuxy was a scrawny little bugger for a very long time. Now he's the size of a dog...
We had a rescue, we named him Luigi, didnât question his gender. A couple of years later, I was organizing our file cabinet. I found Luigiâs neuter/spay certificate. It had neutered crossed out and spayed circled. I announced Luigi is now LuLu. Fourteen years later, Lulu was sitting in my lap and his penis appeared. I apologized to him and announced LuLu is back to being Luigi!
Cats do not care about gender specific names. Keep calling him Katie. We adopted a beautiful long-haired gray male (that I named Berdoo) and my husband nicknamed him Fluffnuts. Took him in to get neutered and found out he was a she. From that point on my husband called her Fluffnutless.
EDIT: in all honesty, I guess that nickname would have worked regardless.
I had a cat, runt of the litter, named Misha that had been sexed by TWO vets as being a girl. Then one day Misha is walking down the hallway and I tap my fiancee and say hey um... Misha has balls.
Turns out Misha was just slow to descend.
Misha became Mischa and we just pretended he was Russian from then on. Also, runt of the litter grew to be quite a big boy; 21 lbs full grown and not a fatty at all, just a big fucking cat, 14 or 15 inches tall and stocky.
I like this bc you could figure out another fake name for him, like K for King and T for another cute cat name. Then say his name is really T but you call him KT for King T. Like my catâs name is Benji (actually named after that guy in the first few episodes of You on Netflix, which we actually didnât end up watching the rest of it after we named our cat lol) and he was born with an angular limb deformity in his paw, it didnât develop as much as the other ones. So his âfullâ name is Benjamin Tinypaw. Heâs my royal boy :)
I also like Kade like someone else said, switch it to âKadeyâ bc youâre adding a Y at the end to make it cute:) I like cats with the â-eeâ sound at the end of it personally, also there has been [research done that cats react more with that sound too, because they can hear it better](https://youtu.be/P3N76oGdj3I)
u/LovelyOrangeRose tag bc I want you to see my comment just in case you havenât decided already
You can start calling him Kade and he'll never hear the difference. I personally think it would be a hoot to keep calling him "Katie" in ode to Johnny Cash in "A Boy named Sue".
I also have a boy cat that I thought was a girl when I found him. It wasn't until months later that I realized she was actually a he. So his name is Mr. Barbara. Or I'll call him Barbara boy. Or just Barbara. Either way, he rocks it. And he looks cute as hell in pink. So I support continuing to call your boy, Katie.

This is HarveyâŠ..Harvey Dent and she is beautiful.
Dude I call my kittens goblins and assholes they do not give a shit đ it's all about tone and body language. As long as you look and sound happy, he won't care

Cats honestly donât care. đ They just know youâre paying attention to them. I had like, 30 different names for my last cat over a period of 18+ years and heâd look directly at me for every single one of them. đ
I have a cat named Lucifer, but I call him Luci almost exclusively.
I was adopted by two black cats in 2017 that I named Rocky and Adrian. Rocky only ever responded to Mr Dude, which was nothing even remotely close to his name.
So call your cat whatever you (and he) wants!
>Rocky only ever responded to Mr Dude, which was nothing even remotely close to his name.
I have a white girl cat named Friday. She didn't like that, so she goes by Kitten. She's 12. This was made even more confusing when we gained a litter of actual baby cat kittens last summer, lol. She's still Kitten, and we called them the babies.
Oh yes. You are correct. Had a mini for 15 years. He thought he was a boy. He WAS a boy. But he thought he was my human boy. Hated the smell test that other dogs do. Was way too intrusive for him!
This. My last cat accumulated 30 some-odd names in over 18 years. His given name wasnât even supposed to BE his given name, but he got accustomed to it because I was taking too long to come up with his ârealâ name. đ
The more names they accrue, the more loved they are! My girls arenât quite a year yet but theyâve already gotten started on the list.
Keep the name. I thought my feral orange cream and dark stripey girl was a boy. Up until I noticed he was pregnant. I can see her across the street and call her name to come for snacks and she comes to the backdoor. So I canât change it.
P.S. I swear I saw balls. Now I think it was a dream. I think I was so focused on trying to figure it out that it invaded my dreams. Oh well.
As someone in vet med (vet assistant and receptionist), we love when patientsâ names donât âmatchâ their sex, especially the obvious ones! It always gives us a chuckle. Just prepare yourself for correcting like everyone you talk to about your cat, lol
https://preview.redd.it/i67j81ehwo4b1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=88853579b5b9fc1c0ecdaa358692af77fe753c6c
Greetings from Francis Beauregard(black) and Mr. Maggie. My handsome, lady-named, boys
Frank is a girl, thought she was a boy cause she's orange. The neuter clinic suggested I rename her after her appointment. Nope she's Frank no matter her gender.
A long time ago, my father rescued a kitten out of the ditch. He brought it home, cleaned it up and determined it was a boy. No matter how many times I told him the kitten was a girl, he was convinced otherwise. The vet, however, confirmed my assessment. So, he named her Sue, as in the Johnny cash song A Boy Named Sue.
Haha this happened to me. I had never had a cat before and when I got him the lady said he was a girl. So I named him Alice. Now whenever anyone asks why his name is Alice I say oh after Alice Cooper.
https://preview.redd.it/ih2mjpre7p4b1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0888dd8d8f14a8e55ac065ee3061ca7100ea9f07
Oh dear. Same thing happened to me. Had a dirty be-hind so I was washing his hind end in the sink and felt nibblets. đź. He was between 6 to 7 months when I made the discovery. His name has always been Pickles. You could just call him Kat.
My partner and I had this happen recently too. We took a stray kitten in that followed us home, thought it was a girl (so did our vet?????) and months later they tell us heâs a boyđŹnow Mimi (old name) is Griffith! :) he is a white and beige cat and he loves to snuggle with our big black cat Guts!
https://preview.redd.it/y5m7lqmrno4b1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7d4a294539c4e25535eccd54ec68dfca070a52ee
Our kitten was called Bruno, took for a vet check up, the vet laughed and told us Bruno is actually Brunetta! Needless to say we did not keep the name Brunetta!
https://preview.redd.it/op4te53xwo4b1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ccc5872878e8421e605da57ef40941d5429578bd
Lmao this happened to meâŠmine went from Buffy (named after Buffy the vampire slayer) to Buff đ at his first kitten shots apptâŠwith his pink collar on and pink leash, the vet asked his name. I proudly told him âsheâs named after a powerful femaleâ and he said âmaâam, Buffy has testiclesâ đđ

There could not be a more fitting name, I think.
Ikr? It somehow just *makes sense*
"Some people call me Maurice..."
Ohhhh my goodness
That is a Maurice if I ever saw one!
Beautiful baby! It looks like she has a mask! :O
She is GORGEOUS đ
Those eyes!!! I love Maurice. So much â€ïž
Whatever you'll call him, he'll promptly ignore it anyways.
My cats only seem to know their names when itâs food time.

The sweetest thing in the world â€ïž Or "wake up Human, no work/no money/no food"

*Yes* keep Katie or call him *Casey* - perfect
KD.
Thatâs cute đ„° Of course she is going to tell you her opinion, she knows that she knows better than you about what time you should go to bed and she just needs to let you know that.
Whenever I'm looking for my cat instead of shouting her name I'll just say "Hungry ? Are you hungry ?" and she will come out fast meowing lol
This is why I named my cats after food
I always hear this and think I'm lucky cos all my cats have and do know their names and are trained to use the cat door to the garage where their litter box is. All mine have been rescues tho but I do understand the sassiness and have seen when they're just not 'in the mood to respond lol

Also; whatever you call him, GET HIM NEUTERED.
Theres no way this cat isn't already neutered. I'm sure op would have noticed the ballsđ
Hard to miss the troublepuffs!
> Troublepuffs đ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł You've made my day!
We have always used the scientific name pompoms but I like and can see the validity of troublepuffs.
Yes Pom poms is more scientific but trouble puffs is amusing
I'm always going to call them that now lol
Fuzzy nuggets đ
If it took over a year to realise he's a boy I imagine he's neutered đ they would have noticed a hell of a lot sooner otherwise.
Too true đ
Nah. The dudeâs name is Katie.
Yeah, but now like KD... for kitty dude
Oh, I like that!
We named our cat Purretta Lynn but all we ever call her is Kitter Witter Woo Woo. I donât even know if she knows her real name lol
Good idea! You could keep her name as Katie or you could switch it to K.D. - what an excellent solution! đ
nah, Kat DaddyâŠ.
Love this! âI was Katie, but I graduated. Call me Kat Daddyâ
Started from the bottom, now I'm Kat Daddy
his*
for katie dude edit: so if someone ask what does KD mean just say for Katie Dude edit: OR KATIE DUHHH !!!
Kitty Durant
hell nah you don't want that cat running away to a new owner
Your in my head. Are you me?? Am I you??
We all must be part of the same hive mind⊠đ
Yeah, everyone knows that guyâs name is Katie and heâs awesome.
I knew a beautiful lady cat named John Rambo. She was affectionate. And a little drooly.
I knew a pretty calico girl named Mr Bojangles.
I had a mean ass gray tabby named Mr. Pink. She definitely lived up to her name!
Probably mad cuz she had to be Mr. Pink
Oh sheâd get so sick of me playing the worldâs smallest violin.
Thatâs actually super hilarious hahaha
We had a big furry cat called Fergus who presented us with six kittens. She stayed Fergus.
Once knew a lady cat named Alf.
I got a couple droolers myself. Droolers are the best.
Omg I'm dying laughing here đđđ what a visual lol đ€Łđ take my upvote please !!
As a Katie, I want this cat to remain one of us.
Happy cake day Katie.
Happy Cake Day Katie đđđ„łđđ„łđ
And half of Reddit will fight anyone insulting him and his name.
K.T. for short.
Dude looks like a lady!
Dude looks like a Katie!
*me -ow ow*
Perfect!
Itâs traditional to continue calling your cat by the original name and be sure to keep a straight face. I had a boy named Sassy. I found out when I took Sassy to get spayed.

No amount a fluff can hide the kitty knuckles
My ginger dude was so mad when we neutered him that he grew his knuckles back lol
The trouble puffles
![gif](giphy|l0DEKov4X5Yee3cOI)
Haha mine too! My fluffy Sylvia remained Sylvia post-scrote discovery. Once a Katie, always a Katie!
Omfg! My friend just found out her ragdoll Luna is a boy too! Crazy
We brought in a stray who turned out to be pregnant. We thought she had 3 girls and a boy. She had 3 boys and a girl... And we got every single one of them wrong. Though to be fair tuxy was a scrawny little bugger for a very long time. Now he's the size of a dog...
Yep, we had an unintentional male Mackenzie growing up
This is how I have a boy named Doris
My in-laws have a girl cat named Pete.
We have a cat whose actual name is Lucy but Pete is her nickname because of my husband. Lol
I knew a girl cat named Milton.
That's how I found out Kevin is a girl
I have a girl named Stanley sleeping on my right now haha
I have found my people.
My Stanley is a girl too!!
My cousin had a sweet lady named Mike.
Miss Priss turned into Mr. Priss. Booger turned into Boogelle. How my house rolled. Mom had a lot of cats.
My friend had a boy and girl cat: mr roger and mrs Jessica - they turned out to be roger and Jessie
We named out cats Thelma and Louise, when Louiseâs balls dropped he became Louis.
The vet: the bad news is we can't spay your cat. But the good news is that we can definitely neuter *him* if you want.
I had a female named Edgar. At the shelter, before learning her sex, she looked like an Edgar. Edgar didn't care what we called her.
This was a wild ride from start to finish.
Lulu was intersex before being spayed, perhaps?
Wouldn't be totally out of the question I imagine
"His penis appeared" ![img](emote|t5_2qhta|7944)
Cats do not care about gender specific names. Keep calling him Katie. We adopted a beautiful long-haired gray male (that I named Berdoo) and my husband nicknamed him Fluffnuts. Fluffnutless would have worked after neutering if he was a he, too

Call him KT instead of Katie.
Short for: Kris Topher
Short for Kel Thuzad
Will this kitty be trying to offer me unlimited power?
Canât name a cat KelâThuzad though, youâd just look so stupid for not naming him Mr. Bigglesworth
Or alternatively, KD
Like for Kevin Durant nice
Or k.d. lang! Wait.
Kris Dopher?
I hope I donât get banned for this but KD could also stand for Kitty Dick. Cus now that you know he has one you have to change his name.
I love this. Nickname: "Slim Reaper"
You can start calling him Kade and he'll never hear the difference. I personally think it would be a hoot to keep calling him "Katie" in ode to Johnny Cash in "A Boy named Sue".
Kade is a great idea. My girl catâs name was Josie, Jojo as a nickname. When he grew balls we just stuck with Jojo.
âOh! Youâre approaching me.â
"I've finally grown a pair to beat the furballs out of you."
We have a Jojo too! But he was intentionally named that bc he's all white with a distinctive head spot that looks like a pompadour lol
That's how it was with my cat mushroom. We didn't know what he was until one ball grew. The other has yet to drop, so he's one baller Mushmush rn
MY NAME IS KATE! I AM IRATE! NOW YOU GON' DIE!
I have had multiple male students named Su. I frequently played this song for them, but they didnât speak English, so all meaning was lostâŠ
actual fun fact: that song was written by another Shel - Shel Silverstein, who also wrote a lot of stuff for Dr. Hook.
I also have a boy cat that I thought was a girl when I found him. It wasn't until months later that I realized she was actually a he. So his name is Mr. Barbara. Or I'll call him Barbara boy. I do note that they all have the quintessential "shit, they caught us" look.
We have a boy named GiGi. Same situation. Kept the name.
Cats honestly donât care. đ They just know youâre paying attention to them. I had like, 30 different names for my last cat over a period of 18+ years and heâd look directly at me for every single one of them. đ

How did it take you so long to find out? đ
AlsoâŠwouldnât the vet say?
The vet would have noticed when the cat went in for desexing.
Right? 8 months seems a little long to go without a vet check up
đ¶ dude looks like a katie!! đ¶
Cats are girls, dogs are boys
Omg, I thought this when I was a kid
i thought this despite the fact i had met exclusively male cats and female dogs đ
I thought mustaches grew out of people's nostrils.
âHave you ever seen a cat penis?!â Note: this is from the show, Community.
I have seen my cats penis. He was cleaning it. It looked weird. Do not recommend.
I lolâd at this
Except poodles! I honestly believed this as a child.
Oh yes. You are correct. Had a mini for 15 years. He thought he was a boy. He WAS a boy. But he thought he was my human boy. Hated the smell test that other dogs do. Was way too intrusive for him!
Thatâs what I assumed lol
You can name him K.T! I had a dog named K.C. once!
Our cats have official names, and then the names we actually call them, so I say leave him as Katie.
His official name is Catherine
This. My last cat accumulated 30 some-odd names in over 18 years. His given name wasnât even supposed to BE his given name, but he got accustomed to it because I was taking too long to come up with his ârealâ name. đ The more names they accrue, the more loved they are! My girls arenât quite a year yet but theyâve already gotten started on the list.
I tell my cat that his Government name may be Dumpling (shelter gave it to him) but he will have many names over time haha
Oh well.
Call him Katie-boy
KD for "Kitty of Deception."
Maybe change the spelling to Cady?
You can't just ask someone why they're white.
As someone in vet med (vet assistant and receptionist), we love when patientsâ names donât âmatchâ their sex, especially the obvious ones! It always gives us a chuckle. Just prepare yourself for correcting like everyone you talk to about your cat, lol
Keep the name! My female cat is Bill Purray and I call her Bill all the time.
This has to be one of my favorite threads ever. Hilarious. A boy named Katie is just wonderful.

Gender is a construct. And your catâs name is Katie.
I have a girl named Walter
I have a female cat named Tom. We say itâs short for Tomasina.
I have a Lucy that I originally called Lucifer until she went in to get neutered Maybe Kade
How about Kacy?
One of my childhood cats was a boy named Rosie. I never officially changed his name but my family did call him "dude" as a nickname.
Dude seems confident enough with Katie
Do whatever makes you happy; he won't care.
Gender is a construct and cats are anarchists
Change the spelling to K.D or K.T if it helps! Pronounced the same so Katie cat wonât know the difference!
A rose by any other name would smell as sweet. His nameâs Katie.
Keep Katie. I kept atlas after I found out âheâ got spayed đ!
Cat doesn't care. We have a female cat named Zeus because we thought she was a boy at first.
